I purchased it 4 years ago with 15,000 miles.
Today it has 46,700 miles 😁

Yes true
My husband also honest mechanic

Scotty was an orchestra conductor in a past life.
😂
It does appear to be so. If perchance I was in the orchestra brass section and Scotty was the conductor, my exhaust playing music would probably sound like variable lean/rich notes in need of a muffler.
I love the magic wave over the engine
@@FSolo-Saenz Bravo! 😆
🤣
I had a code of running Rich, or lean I don’t quite remember. Fixed it. Change the air filter, the MAF sensor, and PCV valve and issue solved. I love my Lexus IS250 2008 model. Very dependable.
Moral of the story. Keep modern cars stock. Intakes/air filters and exhaust by themselves will decrease performance unless the tuning on the computer is changed. By then the car probably fails emissions and gets crap fuel mileage.
Or do it right and some people don’t care it’s part of being a car guy also we don’t daily are gas guzzlers n if we do it’s bc we can afford it
Very true. Most people do not keep their cars maintained where they should be. I have a 2013 Subaru Impreza with 180k and its performance shocks people without a single performance mod. Just did all 20+ things that need to be done to a car with that mileage, plus kept all the fluid changes up to date, which includes ignoring the lifetime fluid garbage in the manual. Few dealers will even do all everything that needs to be done. How often have you heard of a dealer cleaning the mass air flow sensor? It is a 10-minute job, but it's not on their to-do list.
@@restoresciencehealthsupple2890 very valid points I’ve never thaught about it that way dealerships / shops really could do those small things probably even for free but they won’t 🤣
Or just modify it with proper procedure
If this were a BMW or BENZ or Porches Scooty would be complaining about how hard they are to get at the part. But since it's a boring LexASS, all is fine. What a phony.
I have a 07 IS250 and I had a Greddy muffler installed and I noticed the car running richer and worse MPG so I put the original mufflers back on. The car was tuned for the original mufflers, they'll often run best with original mufflers.
Why not get it tuned for performance

Hey Scotty, as an is250 owner myself, i can tell from the video at 9:34 that the car need more oil, maybe it’s cause the car is not on a flat surface but normally the level is supposed to be anywhere between the two little dot on the dipstick, the lower one being the minimum level of oil and the higher one being the maximum level of oil, i hope you can reach out to the owner of the car to informe him and hopefully he can continue to enjoy his lexus has much as i enjoy mine!
I see what you mean, something funky happened with the camera/ lighting to make it look like that color and that it was extremely low. I'm the owner and the oil is a slight tint of yellow/ clearness to it and is full. I've run an engine flush and the oil stays pretty clean.

That's a lot of valve noise. Older cars can be loud like that and still run OK for years but most modern engines today when you hear it like that you are probably going to be rebuilding the entire valvetrain in the near future. It could be just carbon build up but even then if I hear an engine clacking that loud I probably walk away from the deal. Some may say it's nothing but I will err on the side of caution when it comes to buying a used car.
It’s direct injection you’re hearing these cars sound like this at 50k or 200k miles
That 2.5 V6 has carbon build up on the intake valves.
Every gdi engine does
The 250 has direct injectors the injectors are forsure dirty after about 30k miles.
Why remove the muffler.🤔
their are 380 sad days, out of 365 for various car owners in the US... These many sad days are driving people into depression of un parallel proportions...
228,000 miles on my 06 Lexus RX400h and running like new!
So... just put the mufflers back on. It was stupid to take them off. Then the software won't be confused at low RPMs. All he did by taking the mufflers off was make the car more annoying and confuse the software at idle RPMs.
I do what I want
@@AustinsCoins Yes, off you go with your bad decision making. Even Scotty was implying throughout the video that removing the muffler was a bad decision.
@user-ty1ho8jq2m Yea, because you would know because you were there right? Off with your poor listening skills, because in the video and in person he said he liked the way it sounded.
@@AustinsCoins Read between the lines, dude! He just didn't want to offend you. He explained clearly why removing the muffler was a bad idea, explained the consequences of the action, and noted that the car continues to run properly in certain conditions (at speed) due to the grace of the software engineers.
It was a bad decision. There are muffler replacements that you can use if, for some reason, you want to "do what you want" and make you Lexus loud, but you didn't do that. What you did was remove an important component of the exhaust system with no consideration to how the vehicle would be affected. That's why you had to talk to Scotty in the first place! Because you didn't know what you were doing!
Scotty is a very polite and understanding man, fortunately for you.
@user-ty1ho8jq2m Again, you're making assumptions through a screen. You were not there! And do you really think Scotty would care if he were to offend me? He would not, he bashes people's cars or companies all the time. It was also running rich, at least according to the live data, that it was running rich before I removed the mufflers. All I cared about is that it was running fine, which it is.
The direct injection system sounds like lifter noise a common mistake people make
Very common indeed, I've seen so many comments about this so far. They are saying the engine is way too loud and that they would worry/ stay away. Even brand new they were noisy, that's the high-pressure GDI system like you said.
I just got a 2014 one of these cars and I love it.
I swear my 2012 accord 3.5litre idles quieter than every other vehicle... 193,000 miles and smooth as butter 🧈
The reason the is250 is much louder is not mileage its because of direct injection, those injectors are loud as heck! Mine has way less mileage and is just as noisy!
It's not actually running rich. That's what the fuel trim is for. It's trimming the fuel down so that the mixture is correct. The default fuel calculation is incorrect, but the O2 sensor is instructing the computer to correct it. There's no risk of oil dilution as long as there are no codes and the computer is in closed loop.
I would say the "lifter noise" you are referring, is the direct injection sounding loud. Which your wife´s older car probaby does not have. I have a friend with a lower mileage IS250, which tics just as loud from the injectors.
my 350(160k miles) was running rich. Was the mass air flow sensor. 11$ can of MAF cleaner fix it right up

Taking the mufflers off a Lexus? Sounds like my kind of guy!
Why would you remove the mufflers on a Lexus? Kinda defeats the whole point.
It's an IS, not a ES family sedan. They're small sporty vehicles
Some tools out there like to turn their Lexus' into riced out Jap crap with fart can mufflers.
You can do many things for your car with a simple scanner when it has a manual transmission. No need for an advanced one to check the automatic junk.
The noise in the IS 250 is the direct injection. Your wife's ES 330 has port injection.
Correct, it's a common mistake
Hope you had a great Christmas scotty 👍
Who cares!!!!
I want a silent car myself. Not electric either. My Mk3's had duel mufflers and resonators. You couldn't hear it running (never hear me coming). Stealthy.

next video this car is better than toyota and Lexus
Both craps cars.
Thanks for sharing Scotty. I own a 2008 Lexus IS350 running rich on both banks with codes P0172 and P0175. No muffler modifications done. Have changed both A/F sensors, MAF sensor, PCV valve, gas cap, intake manifold gasket, used a smoke machine to look for leaks and detected none, but still these codes show up and on idle the cabin can smell like exhaust. My long term fuel trims go as high as 39% for both banks. Only pending to change is the EVAP purge valve. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated!
I could see that you have changed mostly but the spark plugs. If your plugs don’t fire efficiently because they are worned out, then your fuel mixture would still run rich. Just my $.02.
@@jeejay98 thanks for your 2 cents. I did change the 6 spark plugs a couple of months ago for OEM Denso ones. Before and after the issue has persisted I am afraid. Since I am getting the codes for both banks I am inclined to think that is something in common between both, so this makes me think that a spark plug or injector or coil might not be responsible. What do you think?
I would suggest replacing some vacuum lines. I had the same two codes on my 07 IS250 and I found some pretty cracked hoses on the PCV system but didn't detect anything when I used a smoke machine because the vacuum leak would come and go as I drive the car. It's only $3 a foot for some vacuum line at a store so it's worth to try. Also, check your air filter incase that is clogged.
@@alannguyen5050 hey Alan, thanks for your input, I will definitely consider it. I will look up which are the vacuum lines on my IS350 intake area. I did not mention it, but I did change the intake air filter for an OEM one, and it is not clogged. Thanks again!
If you smell exhaust gas in the cabin then you should prolly check your exhaust pipe from the header to the muffler tip coz its leaking somewhere and as scotty said, back pressure might be reduced due to that leakage.Inspect that exhaust pipe thoroughly, use even a soap form while on idle to detect it
Merry Christmas Scott
Hope u and yours had a great Christmas Scotty
Who the F cares.
Dudes a wandering hero.
Why would you mess with a car like this, makes no sense to me.
I'm not there in person so I'm not going to make a big thing out of it but, there's a few more things I would check with LTFT's showing. Carbon deposits on valves for one along with MAF GPS reading. Most common I see lately on GDI engines is carbon on the backs of valves and often a good induction service and a "drive it like you stole it" with adaptives reset with the scan tool does the trick. But I'm not there and maybe Scotty is correct about the muffler missing on that particular vehicle.
Hope you had a good Christmas! Thanks for an informative and entertaining video Scotty!
I am a Toyota owner and today is my happy day. Very happy day
Today my 4 runner started...drove to work...then,unbeleivably, brought me home...sad day its still chuggin
Thanks for watching send a direct message right away I will love to bless you today 🤝..
Sounds like a dumb idea. Why buy a beautiful, quiet luxury car and drive without mufflers.
It's a IS, not a family sedan
This generation IS250 also suffers from excessive carbon build up on the back of the valves, being that it's direct injection only, not the D4S dual injection system. Had this same issue with my car. Carbon build up = less air flow + same amount of fuel = rich conditions.
I've run two cans of intake manifold cleaner in the car and it smoked a lot each time.
@@AustinsCoins I tired running some cleaner through the intake manifold, but when you have heavy enough carbon build up to affect the performance of the vehicle you're never going to be able to clean the valves proper with just chemical. I had to take the intake manifold off, take the turbulence generators off and clean them, and then clean the back of the valves by hand with small wire brush.
@@ignitionredBRZ what chemical did you use? I know this RUclipsr used Toyotas induction service and he took it apart, it did nothing to help. It didn't even smoke if I remember correctly. I used CRC intake valve cleaner
@@AustinsCoins I soaked the valves in seafoam about two ounces for each valve and let it sit for an hour. And then began to scrub each valve by hand with a small wire brush. Just be careful because one valve will remain open while the other 11 are closed. After cleaning I blew each runner out with compressed air. Also change the oil after you do the service just in case your introduced any contaminates. My car went from getting 21mpg average to 27mpg average, and runs much smoother and quieter now. Also pulls stronger.
Have you ever had an issue with sulfuric smells?
These engines are noisy normally, It's the direct injectiors that is noisy it makes that ticking sound totally normal all the is350/250 sounds like this, I bought my 08 is350 new and sound like that the day I bought it.
Exactly! People keep saying in the comments that the engine is in bad shape because of it. I keep correcting them in the comments.
Lesson is don’t modify your lexus
Is high milage a reason for a car to run rich constantly?...I changed air fliter, spark plugs, cleaned injectors, intake manifolds, driving belt
I would pick a Lexus over anything
I got a 02 rx300 and I have to admit ive never had a 20 year old car run this tip top.
these 250 are tanks but they will never run like they should normally all brakes are locked up espeicially the rears.

Good Afternoon Scotty !!!
I agree 100% beauty covers on engines are very stupid.
0:40 That’s what she said, Scotty.
Maybe Im crazy, but a Lexus is designed to be smooth and quiet - why the heck would you have a Lexus if you want that muscle car sound and need to modify the muffler to make it "not" a Lexus - not to mention causing issues, minor or not, with its precision tuned system. I just don't comprehend all this nonsense.
Generally yes, and it would still be if the mufflers were not taken off. But not as smooth or quiet as an ES for example. The IS is a small sports car line
But the car is actually running lean. The exhaust is not measured correctly and the ecm is adjusting on wrong readings. So it can melt the cat or valves in the long run?
There is none of that fancy scmancy crap on my Celica!
I wish we could all take our mufflers off, have no inspections, and not have to endure emission inspections here in corrupt Pa!
Find it surprising that any exhaust system change past the last O2 has any effect, unless it's unique to Lexus (which I doubt). That is a brand new air cleaner element, possibly the clogged old one caused the issue.
I believe it showed it running rich before I took the mufflers off, however, Scotty said driving it that the software is compensating well and that it's driving completely fine. I'll live with it until there is a issue.
