It's not actually running rich. That's what the fuel trim is for. It's trimming the fuel down so that the mixture is correct. The default fuel calculation is incorrect, but the O2 sensor is instructing the computer to correct it. There's no risk of oil dilution as long as there are no codes and the computer is in closed loop.
Thanks for sharing Scotty. I own a 2008 Lexus IS350 running rich on both banks with codes P0172 and P0175. No muffler modifications done. Have changed both A/F sensors, MAF sensor, PCV valve, gas cap, intake manifold gasket, used a smoke machine to look for leaks and detected none, but still these codes show up and on idle the cabin can smell like exhaust. My long term fuel trims go as high as 39% for both banks. Only pending to change is the EVAP purge valve. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated!
I could see that you have changed mostly but the spark plugs. If your plugs don’t fire efficiently because they are worned out, then your fuel mixture would still run rich. Just my $.02.
@@jeejay98 thanks for your 2 cents. I did change the 6 spark plugs a couple of months ago for OEM Denso ones. Before and after the issue has persisted I am afraid. Since I am getting the codes for both banks I am inclined to think that is something in common between both, so this makes me think that a spark plug or injector or coil might not be responsible. What do you think?
I would suggest replacing some vacuum lines. I had the same two codes on my 07 IS250 and I found some pretty cracked hoses on the PCV system but didn't detect anything when I used a smoke machine because the vacuum leak would come and go as I drive the car. It's only $3 a foot for some vacuum line at a store so it's worth to try. Also, check your air filter incase that is clogged.

If you smell exhaust gas in the cabin then you should prolly check your exhaust pipe from the header to the muffler tip coz its leaking somewhere and as scotty said, back pressure might be reduced due to that leakage.Inspect that exhaust pipe thoroughly, use even a soap form while on idle to detect it
got is220D went to some garages for few faults like p0093 and few more... well... the guys changed load of stuff , 1000 bucks only for parts... at the end nothing was fixed.. So i started watching videos at youtube and guess what... Fuel tank gasket wasnt closing good enough.. so i changed it and just closing it with some pressure.. The CHECK SVC and all else just turned off by themselfs and i continued to drive wow!
I'm not there in person so I'm not going to make a big thing out of it but, there's a few more things I would check with LTFT's showing. Carbon deposits on valves for one along with MAF GPS reading. Most common I see lately on GDI engines is carbon on the backs of valves and often a good induction service and a "drive it like you stole it" with adaptives reset with the scan tool does the trick. But I'm not there and maybe Scotty is correct about the muffler missing on that particular vehicle.
I want a silent car myself. Not electric either. My Mk3's had duel mufflers and resonators. You couldn't hear it running (never hear me coming). Stealthy.
Just bought a rear wheeled drive 07 is250 with less than 100k kilometres on the clock only 1 owner er in Ireland. Its like new🤣✌️ it runs like a clock as Scotty would say🤩
This generation IS250 also suffers from excessive carbon build up on the back of the valves, being that it's direct injection only, not the D4S dual injection system. Had this same issue with my car. Carbon build up = less air flow + same amount of fuel = rich conditions.
@@AustinsCoins I tired running some cleaner through the intake manifold, but when you have heavy enough carbon build up to affect the performance of the vehicle you're never going to be able to clean the valves proper with just chemical. I had to take the intake manifold off, take the turbulence generators off and clean them, and then clean the back of the valves by hand with small wire brush.
@@ignitionredBRZ what chemical did you use? I know this RUclipsr used Toyotas induction service and he took it apart, it did nothing to help. It didn't even smoke if I remember correctly. I used CRC intake valve cleaner
@@AustinsCoins I soaked the valves in seafoam about two ounces for each valve and let it sit for an hour. And then began to scrub each valve by hand with a small wire brush. Just be careful because one valve will remain open while the other 11 are closed. After cleaning I blew each runner out with compressed air. Also change the oil after you do the service just in case your introduced any contaminates. My car went from getting 21mpg average to 27mpg average, and runs much smoother and quieter now. Also pulls stronger.
Maybe Im crazy, but a Lexus is designed to be smooth and quiet - why the heck would you have a Lexus if you want that muscle car sound and need to modify the muffler to make it "not" a Lexus - not to mention causing issues, minor or not, with its precision tuned system. I just don't comprehend all this nonsense.
Generally yes, and it would still be if the mufflers were not taken off. But not as smooth or quiet as an ES for example. The IS is a small sports car line
The car is too noisy without mufflers. Put the muffler back on. Where I live, some people don't like hearing loud cars at night. Also, northern Virignia requires emission inspection, so the muffler must be on

Find it surprising that any exhaust system change past the last O2 has any effect, unless it's unique to Lexus (which I doubt). That is a brand new air cleaner element, possibly the clogged old one caused the issue.
I believe it showed it running rich before I took the mufflers off, however, Scotty said driving it that the software is compensating well and that it's driving completely fine. I'll live with it until there is a issue.

If you smell exhaust gas in the cabin then you should prolly check your exhaust pipe from the header to the muffler tip coz its leaking somewhere and as scotty said, back pressure might be reduced due to that leakage.Inspect that exhaust pipe thoroughly, use even a soap form while on idle to detect it
I swear my 2012 accord 3.5litre idles quieter than every other vehicle... 193,000 miles and smooth as butter 🧈
Taking the mufflers off a Lexus? Sounds like my kind of guy!
Merry Christmas Scott
got is220D went to some garages for few faults like p0093 and few more... well... the guys changed load of stuff , 1000 bucks only for parts... at the end nothing was fixed.. So i started watching videos at youtube and guess what... Fuel tank gasket wasnt closing good enough.. so i changed it and just closing it with some pressure.. The CHECK SVC and all else just turned off by themselfs and i continued to drive wow!
these 250 are tanks but they will never run like they should normally all brakes are locked up espeicially the rears.
The rear brake calipers were replaced by the previous owner, lucky for me
Yeahp one of mine started locking up. Had to disassemble and lubricate
@@AustinsCoins I heard the pads will last longer than the caliper
Stealthy.
Dudes a wandering hero.
You can do many things for your car with a simple scanner when it has a manual transmission. No need for an advanced one to check the automatic junk.
The noise in the IS 250 is the direct injection. Your wife's ES 330 has port injection.
Correct, it's a common mistake
I just got a 2014 one of these cars and I love it.
Hope u and yours had a great Christmas Scotty
Who the F cares.
Just bought a rear wheeled drive 07 is250 with less than 100k kilometres on the clock only 1 owner er in Ireland. Its like new🤣✌️ it runs like a clock as Scotty would say🤩
watch for exhaust leaks on that car. I have a GS 350. Huge problem here is ulster county ny where they salt the hell out of the roads
I always enjoy your videos. Thanks
Wish you would do a video on the classic Lexus IS knock on cold start up.
Today my 4 runner started...drove to work...then,unbeleivably, brought me home...sad day its still chuggin
Thanks for watching send a direct message right away I will love to bless you today 🤝..
This generation IS250 also suffers from excessive carbon build up on the back of the valves, being that it's direct injection only, not the D4S dual injection system. Had this same issue with my car. Carbon build up = less air flow + same amount of fuel = rich conditions.
I've run two cans of intake manifold cleaner in the car and it smoked a lot each time.
Have you ever had an issue with sulfuric smells?
Scotty's missing tooth was funny 🤣
0:36 to 0:40 😂😂😂got to love this guy Scotty ..who would openly show a missing front tooth ..support this man channel give him plenty of like people.
The IS is a small sports car line
that ticking noise isn't the lifters its the fuel injectors
0:10 Wish I was *"RUNNING RICH"* . The ol` cash flow pipeline ain't flowing like it used to. 😲😲😲
The car is too noisy without mufflers. Put the muffler back on. Where I live, some people don't like hearing loud cars at night. Also, northern Virignia requires emission inspection, so the muffler must be on
You think that’s bad wait till you hear my Denali with no cats
@@robertcrook4073 Would hate to be your neighbor. What a dumb thing to do.
It's really not that noisy when in top gear cruising which I like. It's when you're on the throttle when it's noisy
@@AustinsCoins see that’s the thing that’s what car people love is when people get on the throttle like music to my ears 😂👌
@@AustinsCoins I mean some car people might not like noise but that’s rare
I am a Toyota owner and today is my happy day. Very happy day
for me it would time to trick the ecu that cat is still there with spacers or remap the tune or put cat back on
It's the laugh for me at 1:15 🤣🤣🤣, I'm screaming!!!
these have lateral and vertical sensors that control and read the cars angles and adjust it on hills
I got a 02 rx300 and I have to admit ive never had a 20 year old car run this tip top.
Is high milage a reason for a car to run rich constantly?...I changed air fliter, spark plugs, cleaned injectors, intake manifolds, driving belt
Lol u always make me laugh scotty. Merry Christmas to you and the family
If this were a BMW or BENZ or Porches Scooty would be complaining about how hard they are to get at the part. But since it's a boring LexASS, all is fine. What a phony.
That engine is hurt not just high mileage
Sounds like a dumb idea. Why buy a beautiful, quiet luxury car and drive without mufflers.
It's a IS, not a family sedan
I’m trying to buy an IS 350. Is this a solid car?
Yes
Yes just watch out for transmission issues in the 350s and 250s
Scotty is a Legend.
A legend? Only in your mind.
@@scottshannon6084 No he truly is. I'm a Legend in my own mind.😂
Well goodbye.
Correct.
Lesson is don’t modify your lexus
Good Afternoon Scotty !!!
Why would you mess with a car like this, makes no sense to me.
Scotty having problems getting to the air filter lol 😂
If this were a BMW or BENZ or Porches Scooty would be complaining about how hard they are to get at the part. But since it's a boring LexASS, all is fine. What a phony.
Thank god I have a honest and clever mechanic as well :D !
There is none of that fancy scmancy crap on my Celica!
Giving me some padawan vibes with the shotgun scanning.Good times.
Never used any snap on scanner or whatever thats required me to sift through the data.
He’s using a XTool scanner, which is better and has more functions than those few grand overpriced snap on scanners
Both of my Lexus don't require that much disassembly for the air filter, I like it quiet, not like my teens.
Why was the mufler removed?
Make it sound louder
Love Scottys new Christmas gloves.
I have a 06 is250 144k miles recently replaced the alternator, do they require main often ? I do oil changes every 5k miles ,
2:30
Scotty's wife Lexus has been at only 80000 miles for the past 2-3 years now.. Does she ever drive it ?
I would pick a Lexus over anything
Dude is lucky they don’t have to do emission inspections in that state like down here in metro Atlanta, Ga. 😂
Haha I fear leaving my county cuz it's one of the few that don't in west GA
I wish we could all take our mufflers off, have no inspections, and not have to endure emission inspections here in corrupt Pa!
Nice video!
0:40 That’s what she said, Scotty.
Scotty if only you was in living in my town I would have you fix all my cars you are so awesome I hope you had a wonderful Christmas thanks for all of your advice on everything especially the Lexus
So does Cadillac freaking covers over everything in the engine bay. Even the battery's got its own separate plastic enclosure
@@randrozguidroz6485 It's just useless crap.
There are thousands of mechanics who can fix cars. Scooty is just a big mouth old mechanic who is a You Tuber.
@@scottshannon6084 I really like Scotty. He has saved me thousands. I used to by crappy ford or gm products. I switched to Toyota matrix and I have 3 of them. Not one of them needed any major repairs. 2 of them have over 300k and one has 207k. I had to replace a brake line on one and it was 113$ at a honest mechanic. I could of did it myself but super cold outside. So his advice has truly saved me thousands in the past 4 years.
@@HunterJohnson77 Good but those are BORING cars!! Ive owned BMW and Tesla. BMW had over 132k miles a 2010. Tesla had over 80k miles a 2016. Ill take exciting over boring.
I have a 2011 IS250c and has p0420 code. Any recommendation how to fic the issue? Dont think it is cat converter. Inhave 89,000miles on the odo
Great video merry xmas
Ho Scot, I have a problem will my SVU system in my Toyota verso and im hoping you might be able to tell me what is a cheaper way to fix it without going to a Toyota dealership.
Another sad day for Toyota&Lexus owners 😂

I get tired of his catfishn
L after L after L
next video i was wrong
next video this car is better than toyota and Lexus
Both craps cars.
What's your opinion on a 2015 lexus is250awd?
my car has a bad catty. i wanna replace it but im in a state where its double the price. id rather go out of state get and import the piece back lol. but knowing it s bad i keep wondering how its effecting my gas mileage
Great share 👍
For some reason I love it when Scotty says Equilibrate
