Another great episode with all the skills on show, the castings are excellent, and boring that hole over that distance is no mean feat, the boat will be a sight to behold when completed, watched from the start, never tire of seeing your progress, good luck from the UK
I was terrified watching Matt bore that enormous hole in the rudder at the beginning of this video! I kept thinking, what's he going to do if he goes off line with that monster of a hole bit? I was esp. concerned about taking so much wood away from the rudder at such a crucial load bearing point ! I do admit to a little concern remaining; do you think that there's enough wood left for the required strength left in the wood at that point or will the copper tube take most of the load? I am thinking of another casting to encase that part of the rudder? Just my thoughts on it. You two are fantastic artisans at what you do! Well done ! Cheers !
Yeah this may have not been explain well enough but the copper tube takes no load, the rudder stock (stainless shaft) goes through the copper but is not connected to it. It’s basically there to hide the stainless shaft.
Watching your videos is always so energetic! You are doing and beautiful work with your boat, I loving to watch that little moments with your dogs and other animals in the farm, thank you!
Found you by accident. I love what you are doing as young people. I also built a yacht 52F ketch. I am heretic though, my boat is concrete. In water since 2005 and still works
Oh we love an accidental find, glad your enjoying! Nothing wrong with concrete boats, we have seen some very nice ones and holding up well after the years go by
You make somethings so complicated and carefully planned seem so easy to do. Amazing work! You are very inventive and execute your ideas with great skill!
Hi Tim! Thank you so much. Isn't that gold just mesmerising, we are so happy with the castings and are excited for all the other patterns we still have to make. Next time I can come and watch them pour the bronze. I'll make sure to film it so you all can enjoy it too!
Hi Marcus! We are interested also, not sure yet how we will go about machining the bronze. We will talk to some people experienced in the trade and document the process. I don't have any footage of the bronze pour as I didn't know these guys were so welcoming. We will have lots more patterns to be cast in the near future and they promised me I could come and watch them and I can film the process to show you which is so cool! So stay tuned!
Man you guys are killing it👍 It’s such a pity everything’s underwater with all that bling happening😍 Sorry about your fella but the girls would have kept him busy and happy. Greetings🙋
Oh thanks so much! I felt the same when cleaning up the bronze. Had to stop myself from going too hard on it, as you say it will be underwater after all. Thank you for mentioning Jason, he was definitely a good boy and he had a very happy life. He'll be missed
having watched a few different people going through the same journey as yourselves building a nice wooden boat, i always find the rudder and interesting piece, both fairly complex to build etc, your boat in itself might have presented another possibility, might make a rudder easier to build, don't know when you look at ships rudders, big heavy metal things, you begin to realise how they are made, rather like an aircraft wing, using sheet steel etc to fabricate the outside surface over a frame work inside, the voids are often filled with timber to prevent of slow the process of rusting away, filling with water and rusting from both sides - since your boat is laminated, (very clever) i wonder if the same could be done to the rudder, you build in all the hard wear and sandwich it between layers, sculpt the centre to have leading and thinner trailing edge, and laminate the hole thing, might it be easier to manufacture, possibly stronger, and last longer, or be it much less painful to replace if and when ever
Yes internal strapping is quite common! We have seen it done very well on a few boats, but we want to stare at the shiny bronze a little longer before it sadly gets painted.. haha
Bloody hell mate what a great job your doing no kidding I am holding out till you finish to see if you want to sell that piece off art just love it and what makes it even better the cook also loves it we retire in 12 months so he f you ever ever think off selling we our interested
Very nice work on the rudder! Love the bronze work on it too! Are you going to keep that fixed propeller or opting for a variable pitch/feathering one like a Max prop? I know they are $$$$ Keep on trucking!!🤘
Oh well that fixed prop is an inch to large in diameter and the wrong rotation. I highly suspect we will go with a fixed one until we run into some money and can afford a pitch/feathering..
Dog's are hilarious, my dog " Charlie" get trapped in his blanket now and then and then gives me the look like get me out of this contraption will ya, as if its our fault. LOL but they sure do make us laugh don't they! Sorry to hear of Jason had to move on to Glory.. I'm sure he'll be missed.
I think that dog is a bit mad really, especially the look he gave you from under the blanket. Maybe he's sick of sharing his humans with all those chooks. Lovely rudder work and castings.
Ah yes the copper tube takes no load, it is just hiding the stainless rudder stock so you don’t see it and the rudder shape is retained. With a wrap or two of fibreglass it should be strong enough
A very small and rather low key foundry in Tasmania, they are lovely people and make some great stuff but as far as we know it’s the only bronze casting in Tasmania. They are opposite spectrum engineering in Hobart if your familiar with the place
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River thanks, I am a local. Used to use Retlas bronze until they disappeared. Since then I have done my own small stuff, mainly rowlocks. Am a 4th generation boatbuilder originally from Southport/Dover. Didn't know there was a local foundry doing smaller jobs. Cheers and keep up the great work. Ps. You can put 2 holes saws on one arbour in most cases, a smaller one will fit inside a larger one.
Oh yes in comparison to tally Ho it does. But this is the designers specs and he has designed and built plenty of boats before so we will have to trust him.
Haha no, no nuggets out if Jason. He was very old and had a very full life. By the end his body was supposed to rest, we buried him beneath the gum trees.
Frankly a bit disappointed with the rudder design. High aspect ratio. You built a Spitfire rudder in the age of the F35. Look up tip loss. Look up Leo. The rudder ain't right.
Hmmm well you better bring that up with Paul Gartside the designer. Some things are better left alone for the designers specs. Leo’s designer has past so he cannot consult with him. And just because Leo made his rudder bigger doesn’t mean everyone should. In Paul we trust, and if it doesn’t work then we will be plenty experienced enough to modify it.
The rudder looks like it will be easily removable, therefore easily modified if necessary. It probably won't be necessary. I wouldn't worry about it, keep on guys!
Rarely has boring been less boring. It's always a pleasure to find a boat by the river to watch.
Haha that's awesome, not so boring boring! I'm happy to hear and very pleased to be making videos that you enjoy watching. Cheers
The bronze work looks great and I look forward to seeing it mounted on on the rudder and the rudder mounted to the boat.
Oh yes we were just playing with the rudder again today! Having the gudgeon and pintles being machined right now!
I'll bet the shop smells good with all those fresh planer shavings
It definitely does Greg! It's so beautifully dark red as well. We are using it on the garden beds now!
Beautiful job guys, love the rudder and fittings. Andy UK
Cheers!
Nice bit of boat bling, looking really smart, guys. Thanks for sharing. From UK.
Thanks for watching John! Boat bling is the best bling
perfect video, perfect craftsmanship, perfect team, thank you :-)
Oh that's so kind of you to say. I'm so happy you are enjoying the progress!

Ah what lovely words! Thankyou. Or was certainly a bit of work to bore through but we got it done!

Glad you enjoy it! We are so lucky to have all those sweet distractions around us. The dog, chickens and duck keep us entertained for sure!
The traditional Brass fittings make look amazing keep up the great work both of you David Australia 🦘
Oh thanks David! We are happy with the shine!

Thank you very much Fredrick, that's so kind of you to say. I'm really glad you enjoyed watching this episode!
Very finicky designs and fit.. Well executed by both of you..Keep up the good work.
Thank you Frans! Happy you enjoyed the work done.
Looking good. Lovely rudder and castings joining perfectly.

Well done on using Vesconite...great product. I used it for the cutless bearing on my prop shaft. Great video...thanks...
Great to hear you have used it and are happy with it! We feel very confident with the choice.
Love that rudder!
Thankyou!!
Well done. Another amazing episode.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it
Post some of the casting videos if you have any. Looking great. Be interested to see how you bore the bronze.

Absolutely Perfect Job Guys 👍 HAPPY OCTOBER ⛵️
Thanks Roger, finally spring has arrived! Happy oktober indeed
Sorry for your loss of a feathered friend. Our dog Jasper was born July 2009 we all get a turn at the wheel still going strong!
Thank you! We were sad to say goodbye to him but his life was amazing. Our Obie dog says hi to Jasper, he reckons Jasper deserves a treat!
Girl I have tried snd triad to find out how to pronunce your namebut never the less you are brilliant.
Keep uptime dood work
Well done. Lpve the bronze
So shiny isn't it. The gold and the Jarrah are so beautiful together
Looks like work!!!
Definitely work but good to keep us off the streets!
Fabulous work!
Glad you like it!

@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_Rivermaybe Felepe was referring to selling the cook..
good show. thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looks great...cheers rr Normandy, France
Thanks Rick! Thank you for tuning in from Normandy!
Happy New Year!!
Same to you!

Great work. You and Leo from tally ho should join forces
Wouldn't that be amazing. He's got awe-inspiring work done on Tally Ho. Such a fantastic project
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River only thing I would say about tally how is his systems are too complex. In 5-10 years his going to have problems. KISS.
Yes we love to KISS!
I think that dog is a bit mad really, especially the look he gave you from under the blanket. Maybe he's sick of sharing his humans with all those chooks. Lovely rudder work and castings.
Yes Obie has a natural skill to make you feel guilty, he can stare at you until you give in an walk him. If only we had skills such as those!
Cutting the cord happened to me!!
It must happen to the best of us!
Immediately Ope' marches off with his ears twisted tight to duplicate ear protection..poor ol'canine !
Haha yeah, we do look after him though!
Worryingly thin wooden wall thickness where the copper tube goes through.
Ah yes the copper tube takes no load, it is just hiding the stainless rudder stock so you don’t see it and the rudder shape is retained.
