Just beautiful ! You two always do the right job , it takes so long but before you know it ,it will be done ! And it’s going to be Champagne and caviar dreams with beautiful sunsets together! 👍🏻👍🏻
I've heard a lot of butterfly hatches leak, but now seeing how they're built I'm surprised there are some that don't! Love the vids, and the whole project.
Very nice sky light. A few points though: I’m surprised that there is no “gutter “ under the top edges. The trim pieces at the bottoms will benefit from some kind of limber hole or notch to shed any standing water. Lastly, I worked on a sky light where someone had drilled holes in the ends of the bars and then screwed up into them. When in place the screws were invisible. When you took the bars off it was one grating. Seemed easier. You have made that celery top look stunning!
Thanks, yeah we made another skylight at work and we put small grooves in the trim which helped the water leave the glass and not sit. There is a gutter also at the top of each lid, we can do some close ups maybe in another episode as we’ve had these points raised a couple of times Cheers
Whenever I do any caulking my face contorts into a weird grimace and my tongue sticks out a bit. 😂 You seem to have a fairly photogenic caulk face. Good job as always!
as a tip when ever i have stuck glass into place, to prevent all the adhesive squishing out, i cut a little bit of electrical cable, with its insulation, ie use use black adhesive, use black wire as a spacer, that way as the weight of the glass presses down, it can only go so far, plus its evenly displaced, and doesn't create that gap you have to try and back fill later - if at a later date you get shrinkage or some adhesive falls out, the wire maintains the gap and you can simply tape and refill - i used to do a lot of vehicle and caravan bespoke work, finding seals wasn't as easy as it is today, so everything had to be handmade love what you kids are doing, great work and progress
Really beautiful collection of lamps and the skylight looks great. If I ever have to justify a costly item at home, I divide the price by the number of years I expect to enjoy it for and get an annual cost. You will look at and use it for years and it will always be worth the expense.
I'd have second thoughts about the trim pieces. Looks like a water trap to me, that’s where the rot starts. Otherwise: looks lovely! Greetings to Tasmania from a fellow tall ship sailor.
Yep you are correct! What we have done before is put little channels at each end of the trim so water can move off the glass. We will show in another video sometime Cheers
Really nice lights guys. Just a thought on the light over the saloon table; if it’s on a chain, when the boat is heeling on a nice reach, the lamp might be out over the sole and in the way of moving about. Awesome work guys!
The Deks Olje oil is intended to saturate the timber and consequently will need many coats, applied until the timber will not take any more. One coat just will not be enough.
I was just thinking time to glue the glass in your skylight. Just hope you remember the bars. That turned out beautiful. Years of enjoyment coming. Nice light fixture also
Beautiful skylights guys but looking at the end pieces that the bars terminate into, I hope you are going to plug the screw holes to give that smooth finished look.
I'd think about screwing those lights into the beams if possible. My boat was a 28' Colin Archer style cutter, and man, it got bouncy on my way to Europe, and even in the Med a couple of times.
Hi Guys, enjoying your progress and dedication. Too late now but we found Sikaflex the worst silicon to use on our teak deck. It may be fine in Tassie but it did not cope in the tropics at all. For what it's worth that was our experience. Keep up the great work.
Oh interesting! For our deck caulking we were planning on Sikaflex. It’s tried and tested, fixtec has fast become popular down here though as you know.
Beautiful butterfly skylight. Any glass treatment - tinted for privacy and shade, shatterproof or special thickness for high falling dense objects, double or single glazed for heating or cooling. As per previous comments, water drainage and ease of cleaning.
Mmmm putting that Beautiful light on a chain would look cool but if your Sailing in rough Seas it might swing too hard and bang against roof I would make up a solid brass fitting just long enough to where your hanging it from
Beautiful work! ❤ Question though (maybe it was not shown in the video)? Are you using bedding compound under the wooden bar ‘rails’? Would be such a shame if water wicks under there and cause damage over time.
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River butyl tape is really awesome too for that job. Used it when I replaced two portlights on my boat. Non-setting, easy to use, happy days! 😁
Did not know that silicone and varnish are not friendly to one another.. you used safety glass but why not use something like Optic Armour?? You can buy it in a sheet and you can cut it and i believe heat it up to fit almost anything. Drag racers here in America use it.. its tuff stuff and you can get it tinted or in colors.. would really love to see some stained glass panels put below the hatch. Perhaps a lighthouse or a octopus or something to do with sailing and the water
Yeah we learnt that the hard way on a job once, it became impossible to coat it. It would just bubble and ruin the coats, we went for glass mainly because we were worried any plastic sheet would fade and become less clear from the UV
Not sure if the skylight or the new light is the more beautiful as both are stunning. Great work and attention to detail as always. Will the lights be 12v led or are they not aesthetic enough for such lovely lights.
Hey Tim, they will definitely be 12v Led, we just need to work out the best fitting to use and what path of light bulb style we follow… maybe a automotive bayonet style that we can easily find?
No way is this a moan or smartarse jab. It's a question. Won't the trim at the bottom edge of the glass catch and hold water? Love your work and the style of the videos. Thank you. gary in Japan.
Haha not a problem Gary! What we did it mention is that we rasp two small channels in the trim so water can fall off. We did it once before at work on another skylight and worked quite well
That accent of yours sounds so cute! - but too, sounds exhausting. You can't be expected to talk that way all the time, like when the camera is off. ( skylight looks so boatie!)
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Good afternoon! I hope everything is well! Please send me a link on how I can make a Butterfly hatch from the beginning (from the scratch) using a dry wood boards in carpentry workshop. Thank you in advance.
@user-wf9cw1fy3o oooooh tricky, we never made a full video on how we built it and never really followed any plans. There is an article from wooden boat magazine that you can view online, punch in butterfly hatch in google and something should pop up! Good luck! Haha
Gorgeous skylite. Such elegant work you two do. And stylish video editing skills as well, Iefke!
Oh thanks!! We are trying and learning each video!

Your attention to detail is second to none - and the results are sublime!
Ah thankyou!!

Yes, without a limber hole or weep hole you will have standing water on the glass.

A very beautiful skylight indeed. And the bars really finish it off.

Really enjoy your video's, I'm sure as time goes on your channel will gain traction. Nice work.
Yes we hope so! It’s been a year now and a slow climb…

Yep true true! We were just throwing ideas around, and as we said it would probably make us sea sick ahahah
The Deks Olje oil is intended to saturate the timber and consequently will need many coats, applied until the timber will not take any more. One coat just will not be enough.
Oh yep, Ief did mention that in the video, we never only apply one coat.
Splendid! Need my weekly dose of A boat by the river.
Ah glad we are fulfilling your needs!
BEAUTIFUL....cheers richard in Normandy

That lamp is a beauty!

Beautiful work! ❤
Question though (maybe it was not shown in the video)? Are you using bedding compound under the wooden bar ‘rails’? Would be such a shame if water wicks under there and cause damage over time.
Yes good question! For now they are temporarily screwed down and then we will use a not setting bedding compound such as mastik
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River butyl tape is really awesome too for that job. Used it when I replaced two portlights on my boat. Non-setting, easy to use, happy days! 😁
Oh yes yes! Good idea
Looks great. I have a question. How do you avoid water penetrating the upper joints?
To be revealed in a future episode! We are going to start with a rubber seal and maybe if needed trench a wooden seal in the frame.

@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River for future reference Optic Armor which you can Google is fine in all conditions

How do you cut things without measuring?
Ah special boat builder trick haha 😜
Nice work guys. Do you build full time actually?
Hmmm we would like to but can’t earn enough money, so we have averaged probably 4 days a week over the past year working on the boat
That accent of yours sounds so cute! - but too, sounds exhausting. You can't be expected to talk that way all the time, like when the camera is off. ( skylight looks so boatie!)

Yeah beauty at a price hahaha
Good afternoon, whether you have no reference to production of the hatch of a butterfly, by own efforts with 0? I thank.
Sorry can you rephrase the question? Hopefully we can help

I know every one automatically goes to 12 volt lighting. Did you consider 24 volt? Most LED globes will accept it.
Yeah, we are meeting up with a marine electrician soon to discuss everything. We are still open to ideas for sure
