The Torch of Liberty was a John Byrne character who had his own comic. Some of the titles from the DH Legends imprint were originally planned to share the same universe, hence the Hellboy and Abe appearances in The Next Men. It was scrapped shortly after and both Mike and John admitted it was a bad idea from the get go. I suppose The Lobster will replace the Torch in the remake.

Whaaaa??? That's mind blowing! Great insight Filip- we'll be sure to note this in future Hellboy coverage.

@@ImperiusRex Found Mike's quote from last year's interview, I think:
_"Had I created Lobster Johnson [then], I would’ve used Lobster Johnson in that opening sequence in Hellboy, but I hadn’t thought of him yet. I thought it was cool to have one superhero guy - kind of a throwback to my Marvel Comics stuff, little World War II Captain America hanging out with GI’s. I always wanted to have that. And since John had created this Captain America-ish character, I thought, “Well, this is just perfect.” But now, I never want to go back and take it out, and John never told me to take it out. We acknowledge it’s there, but we just don’t talk about it too much.
      "_
And I made a mistake. The Torch only had a one-shot special, and before that he had appeared in backups for Byrne's "Danger Unlimited".
Also, thanks for revisiting Hellboy and the Mignolaverse.

My first introduction to Hellboy was when I was in 3rd grade when the first movie came out. 3rd grade was my first year of public school after leaving Catholic school. I heard my friend ask, "Have you seen Hellboy?" And the title alone struck fear in my single-digit-aged, fresh-outta-Catholic-school spine. My morbid curiosity outweighed my Christian fears and I got super into it. Got me into both Del Toro and Mignola, both of which are still favorites of mine to this day.

Johnny Athey love it! I was in high school when it came out. I remember a Christian youth group that went to see it and told me they didn’t care for it. I told them they most likely went in with pretty biased opinions. He agreed.

Wolves of St. August is my favorite Hellboy story...
I read Wake the Devil before Seeds of Destruction and the stark difference hit me like a mack truck that I almost couldnt continue. But I remembered it was John Byrne and he had a wordy style and this was the first real Hellboy story where nothing was established yet.
You guys hit it in the head when you described how different it was to when Mignola took full control of HB.

The way Broom is done in the comics is similar to Comedian from Watchmen in the sense that they become more fleshed out after their deaths begin the story.

Hellboy and BPRD are my favorite books because you have a group of good guys deal with (read: kick the ass of) all of the weird and scary stuff we tell around a campfire.
I found you guys last summer while researching Hellboy for a drawing, I went "what's this...?!" Subscribed right away. Had nothing to do with drawing but man do y'all know how to make comics so much fun. A laid back atmosphere with friends and it's silly and funny and probably RUclips's best kept secret. You guys have a winning formula and as word continues to get out everyone else will know what I stumbled across accidentally. Good job!

So excited for this, guys. Nothing gets my rocks off like Mignola. I agree that the library editions are the best way to read Hellboy, but if you're looking for bang-for-buck value, these omnibus books are solid. And they're chronologically collected, so you'll get all the side stories and mini collections set at their appropriate times.

Always great to have a bit of helboy coverage, I think the Mignolaverse can be a little daunting to get into, seems so vast with helboy, Abe, Sledgehammer, BPRD, helboy and the bprd, helboy(insert date), Frankenstein, I could keep going a while longer but I figure you get my point. I was going to bring up the Torch point but I see someone has mentioned it below, surprised when you said you were unaware of it. I do enjoy it when things branch off into other things but still feel like they're a part of the whole, Fables does this a bit with the females and jack of the fables and other stuff, their expanding the Sandman universe at the minute and I look forward to looking into them.

Hellboy and the Mignolaverse is great but I was always put off reading it as it's pretty vast and I heard there a lot of cross over. If anyone else is a bit OCD like myself when it comes to continuity then the below link is a life saver and gives you an exact reading order as well as listing the TPB that fit in both library and omnibus editions.

jared baldon yep- that’s what I used on future read throughs. That being said- you can read each title individually and be satisfied. But seeing how the whole universe fits together is pretty rad.
