  • With a new Hellboy movie approaching, Troy and Dave discuss the character's curtain-call in the 10-issue send off: Hellboy in Hell.
How does the fiery finale match up to it's preceding stories? Does Mike Mignola stick the landing for his nearly 30-year old character?
What can readers dive into now that Hellboy is finished?
Let's find out together, shall we?
*FUN NOTE: Dave had the pleasure of meeting Mike Mignola at a Q&A during a gallery showing at the Society of Illustrators in NYC. During the show, he asked him about his decision to end the series the way he did, to which Mike gave a really insightful answer. I love the ending because I think a lot of readers always expect the finale of something to be the climax but it very rarely is if it's truly ending.

Such a beautiful ending to an amazing epic. The only thing that could have made this whole series (all of Hellboy) better would have been Mike drawing it in its entirety.
I may be fan-boying a bit but I don't care. Love it. Love it. Love it.

Yep. While I love Fegredo's art after Strange Places, it's a shame Mike couldn't have done the entire run himself. It was terrific to see him come back to fully-complete the character's swan song however. (although I'd have loved to see him illustrate that penultimate Dragon-fight at the end of the Fury.)
As a Hellboy fan, I'm sure you're aware of what's happening in BPRD right now, correct?

Although I only knew hellboy through the live action movies, I kinda knew the general idea of hellboy. And even though I only seen a few comics, I believe that this was the best way for his story to end.(or to be on hold) Because for most of his life he's been fighting all things supernatural and he has met things that almost costs his life. When I read it the overall atmosphere and tone of the remains of hell just gave of a feeling of emptyness and lost. As if you can hear hellboy's footsteps.
The ending was kinda saying that in order to be at rest when you die, you have to let go of your past. And I won't lie and I did get a bit emotional since hellboy is one of my most favorite characters ever.
The ending where he's at the cottage with the quote from his past that he is a "demon sent from hell and he is gonna destroy us all" is was sad but yet so poetic.
This was probably the best way to end the story for such an amazing character. Its not exactly a cliche happy ending where everything is all good in the end. Hellboy has died and is in hell but he changed his destiny, and can finally rest after a lifetime of conflict. Which is something he had wanted, to change his destiny.

Imperius Rex thank you. And is hellboy actually seen in other comics which are still on going. If so which ones

    • @ImperiusRex
      @ImperiusRex  6 лет назад +1

Zero Sketch you bet. He pops in and out of flashbacks. The BPRD comics mainly take place after Hellboy quits the group, so they reference him often and his absence is felt by the organization. They also have a new ongoing series chronicling Hellboy’s early years called Hellboy and the BPRD which are a lot of fun and full in the gaps in his history. And Spoilers....... there are big Hellboy related things happening in the new series of BPRD: The Devil You Know, which picks up after Hellboy in Hell. It’s going to be pretty great.

Just finished reading it like right now. I agree with the ending because of the extra feeling attached to the meaning of those shapes. It's just good that Red can now rest for a while (or maybe not? ). Again, awesome channel guys. Cheers from a peruvian fan.
    Keep the videos comming.

Diego Rodríguez Vera thanks Diego! Glad to hear feedback from another Hellboy fan. We both dug the ending and the chance for Hellboy to grab some much needed rest, just hopefully not for too long. Dave is doing a massive read of some of the other Mignola titles at the moment- and if you dig Hellboy, he strongly suggests BPRD. Picks up a ton of threads that Hellboy kicked off, especially on the Plague of Frogs

Thank you gentlemen! I read and enjoyed Hellboy In Hell, but the Shapes didn't really make sense to me until I watched this video. Mr Mignola had been mining the world's mythology and folklore for years to get Hellboy material, so it made sense to wrap it up with a folk tale from within his own family. The Shapes make just as much sense as Baba Yaga or Kelpies or Daryl The Wendigo!

Awesome vid and talk. Keep up the good work. And I agree with Mignola's art. I dig it but it's been really really simple lately. Nut to me, HIH it was an incredible, wrap up story. I mean you can only read Hellboy and bam! it just ends. And its gratifying. But yknow there's BPRD and now "The Devil You Know" chapter is firing all cilinders. You gotta talk about BPRD next time and why it's awesome, specially Plague Of Frogs. Greetings from Colombia.

Can I read Hellboy in Hell library edition without any prior readings of the preceding 6 library editions.? Does this book stand alone.? From where I'm from, there is no other Hellboy library editions available.

Sure, it's a fun 10-issue run of essentially Hellboy bumming around Hell. It's not my FAVORITE Hellboy story, but it's absolutely a great read. And i think it can stand alone, as long as you have a little bit of pre-history of the character.

I recently reread the Hellboy series and currently I have jumped into the B.P.R.D. series. Although I am not a huge comic reader, from those I have read, Hellboy is by far my favorite. I cant really say which issue is my favorite because all of them are great. As for the Hellboy in Hell issues I have to say that regarding the artwork and the atmosphere they are my favorites, although indeed they felt kind of rushed towards the end. As for the end on its self, after I read it, at first I was confused, but after I read the story of the magician and the snake I was moved and it felt right. I deeply respect Mignolia for not turning Hellboy into a cash machine franchise. Every story needs to have an end. My only complain is that since in order for the reader to understand the ending he is required to read the above mentioned short story, then that story should had been included into the series like the other short stories.
    Nice video. Cheers from Greece.

Great to hear from another Mignola fan!
I actually had the pleasure of meeting Mike earlier this year, and during a Q&A, I asked him about his decision to end the book that way. He gave a really insightful answer (long story short: it's always been a personal series to him, and he felt the ending should have a personal meaning, rather than a huge, epic, crowd-pleaser).
Here's a clip of me asking the question, with his answer: ruclips.net/video/2YCXTwkjYdM/видео.html (1:14:42 mark), straight from the venue hosting the event, The Society of Illustrators in NYC.
