  • Cummins is future-proofing its internal combustion engine options developing a “common base range” of power units that can be adapted to run on natural gas, hydrogen, or diesel by making a few simple alterations.
    According to the company’s construction market director Jeremy Harsin, Cummins has developed a fuel-agnostic approach in which “you scale the bottom end of the engine, change the air handling systems and the cylinder head,” and away you go.
    It’s all about bridge products for a zero-emission and long-term hydrogen fuel cell future.
    The fuel-agnostic architecture of the company’s 15 litre platform utilises a common base engine with cylinder heads and fuel systems specifically tailored for it to use carbon-free hydrogen or biogas with up to a 90% carbon reduction.
    Cummins’ 15 litre hydrogen has power ratings up to 530hp (395kW) and the natural gas unit goes up to 510hp (380kW). The advanced diesel version can use either sustainable HVO fuel or biodiesel with ratings up to 650 hp (485 kW) for the most demanding off-highway duty-cycles.
    A key design feature of the new platform is a Double-Overhead-Camshaft (DOHC) realising significant advances in combustion and thermal efficiency. Friction losses across the engine design have also been reduced and a sculpted block contributes to weight saving. The DOHC design also enables a more efficient integral engine brake to be accommodated.

      Today’s internal combustion engines with no check engine light on and a fully operational converter have nothing but H20, N, O2, H and CO2 coming out the tail pipe. Complete perfect burn. CO2 emissions are a cash grabbing scam. CO2 is essential for life on earth.
      You should set up a 5 gas analyzer on any of today’s gasoline engine.
      For every litre of gasoline burnt 1 litre of water comes out the tail pipe. Hell 10 cords of fire wood burnt emits more emissions then 10 cars do in their entire lifetime
      Sure there are exceptions… if you’re an irresponsible vehicle owner who doesn’t repair their shit and drives around with the check engine light on with incomplete monitors that’s when actual harmful emissions are created. Vehicles running lean with high combustion event temperatures create NOX, vehicles running to rich now have an excess amount of unburnt HC which is what produces CO. Can’t have CO unless you have unburnt HC. But a catalytic converter is pretty damn good at dealing with that regardless.

      CO2 emissions are a cash grab? Hmmm
      So if you go in your garage close the door start your car and stay in there, I guess you'll be just fine?
      If you got in your car and drove straight up into the air at 60 MPH in 5 minutes you would run out of oxygen and die. That is how small the bubble around us is.
      It would be nice for 1 minute if some brainwash ding dong, would realize what we have done, and continue to do every day since the beginning of the industrial revolution.
      It's a miracle we're still alive. Hydrogen emits zero emissions.
      There are alternative ways to get from here to there, without someone saying something stupid. {No offense}

      @@DDescalchuk57 Exactly! But liberal douchebags are not satisfied with a clean environment; they want to "purify" it, by getting rid of ALL sources of energy! Once ICE cars and trucks are off the road, then they'll be coming for our gas stoves and heaters, etc.

      I will also add. If you were looking at this from just a religious angle. You have missed the mechanical wonder that this technology brings. Instead of being ruled by the oil oligarchs. Hydrogen offers financial freedom through a very accessible resource (water) . If one thinks about it. Hydrogen powered autos could bring water to the desserts at no costs. 😏😉
