As much as it hurts the owner to have to bring it in with these issues, it's pretty awesome to have your shop film everything and see the high quality of work being done.

On 10k worth of work
I think that's pretty standard practice in the industry. You gotta commit to paying for the diagnosis but if you agree to the teardown and repair then they waive the diagnostic fee. It doesn't make good business sense to charge $5,000-$10,000 or more for an engine rebuild and then still hit them with the diagnostic fee too.
I met a regional sales guy for Cummins, and his company truck was a Titan XD with the Cummins 5 liter. I asked him what he thought of it, and the immediate look on his face told me everything I needed to know. His eyes held this fascinating mixture of disgust, bemusement, and more than a little shame. His gaze shifted downward. "It's a company truck." he said as a slow smile crept over his face.
I have a standard V8 Titan bought new and love the performance but that being said… throttle body went out at 20k resulting in having to have my new truck towed. The towing was covered by Nissan and everything was taken care of with the warranty. 39k had to have engine mounts replaced which was under warranty. The dealership had mounts in stock because it’s a known issue. I baby the truck with no off-roading. Glad I bought it from a volume dealer with a lifetime power train warranty. Love the truck but will see what else comes up. Puting it out there for other owners to be aware.
Nissan has a management team Hell bent on destroying the company. There's no other explanation. They car transmissions are crap, the cheap on everything. So the conversation with Cummins probably went something like this, build a 5.0 at half the price point you offered. I suspect a conspiracy is afoot in order to send all car manufacturing to Kissinger's Chinese factories.
21st century, and we can't make vehicles that at least would last 100,000 miles without mayor issues.
This is sad. My old 2001 250k mile, tuned,12 psi supercharged, has never been opened up or leaked a drop of oil. It's been a play toy for a very long time. When Tokyo drift came out i would watch it. Then go hit the dirt roads around the farm.Once you get sideways push in the clutch throw it in 4high and give it hell. The long arm suspension was being fully used. It was fun.
This is my only nissan ever. I stacked the main bearings in my yota doing the say thing as my beater. I do maintain and change the oil regularly.
I assumed they were all like my boosted beater. Sad to see they are not.

Even Toyota can't build a good deisel anymore for the Hilux sold overseas. Euro emissions has crippled every diesel that American emissions standards hasn't.

If I ever need an engine rebuild I can’t do myself, I’d tow my vehicle 1000 miles to get it worked on at this shop. Dave, I heard the pride in your voice when you told the customer that your son would be doing the engine tear down. I’d be proud, too, if I’d had a son join me in my decades-built business. The 5.0 has been a complete debacle. I was so excited for this motor to.
I was excited for a diesel in a 1/2 ton. But was disappointed it wasn’t a large 4 cylinder or a small inline 6 cylinder. It’s sad that if your over a certain HP your emissions exempt. But not when it’s a small engine. If they would have put the 3.9 or the updated 4.5 in them and turned up the pump. And no emissions you would have had something.
There's a reason why Cummins stopped making v8s eons ago. Nissan should have asked whoever makes dirtymax or power joke to make their engine.
Definetly not competing with the 6.7 Powerstrokes and 6.7 Cummins for sure

I was a diesel mechanic in the 80’s and 90’s, I didn’t wear gloves either until the chemicals made me sick.
Gloves were mandatory at school, 20 years later I still wear them. I don't care if people make fun of me, at least I won't get sick due to chemicals.
Yup I pulled wrenches for 40 years no gloves, got cancer Doctor told me gloves or no gloves you can't go back too many bad chemicals

Had a good friend get cancer after years and years of engine building. Doctors all believe it is from oils and chemicals from not wearing gloves. I’ve been wrenching for over 20 years and always wear gloves.
Forty years ago I used to enjoy working on vehicles without gloves. Now I never do. Also, as much as possible I avoid breathing the fumes from any used automotive fluid.
Half the job is skill/ability, the other half is being able to communicate effectively with the customer what you found and what your plan is. Very few mechanics are the full package and can do both at a high level.

I am overwhelmed with the level of professionalism of your shop Dave. The call to the customer to keep him in the loop shows you care about him as a person. The $400 credit you are giving for the tear down speaks to your character as a business. Top notch as far as I can see. You are one of the good ones.
Has anyone done a ( Natural resources and pollution) study to see if the small reduction of crankcase emissions is worth all the cost of engine life expectancy? Need for a replacement vehicle or engine has to have a negative effect vs the engine/ vehicle lasting longer and not needing replacement. I bought a 2000 yr Motorhome with Cummins diesel that has no real emissions device, no def, no dpf ,no EGR 130,000 miles on it and zero issues, no fault light , absolutely nothing but regular service. I picked the older unit because I'm a Cummins certified mechanic and I knew these petty emissions rules would kill the life expectancy of the Engine, the largest most costly part of the Motorhome. Having a dependable 450 hp engine gives me piece of mind climbing Donnar Pass and other long large hills in the West. If I or anyone needs rebuild service, your top of the list. Like your professionalism and honesty.
The crankcase fumes are the lowest hanging fruit for emissions. If you look at real old photos of highways from the '50s you'll note the black slick down the middle of each lane, that's oil from the road draft tubes on everybody's engines. Obviously most of it just dripped on the ground (bad for the groundwater, but not getting in your lungs) but there was always going to be some mist too. Fitting everything with a crankcase ventilation system cleaned the air up a lot, and only costs a few bucks per engine. So much so, that even el-cheapo mowers have a crankcase ventilation system.
The real source of all this grief with clogged up manifolds is the EGR, or more specifically the manufacturers' choices on how to build the EGR system. The usual practice to operate an EGR system on a diesel is to set the engine up so that the turbo creates more backpressure than the engine runs boost. The excessive exhaust pressure thus forces exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold through the cooler and into the intake manifold. There are obvious issues with this approach, not only are we sending sooty exhaust into the intake but we are also subjecting the engine to more heat and stress from a restrictive exhaust. Now that everything has a DPF, there is also the option of collecting exhaust downstream of it at which point it is soot-free and won't clog the intake. Which sounds great, but there's no backpressure to force the EGR in. This problem can easily be addressed by putting a throttle valve upstream of the turbo and using it to constantly pull a mild vacuum in the intake, then the EGR gas will be sucked in along with the air, compressed by the turbo and fed to the manifold. No soot, no problems. So why don't they do it? I suspect they want to save a few bucks on the throttle valve and extra plumbing required by that system, and don't give a rat's about the effect on longevity because the engines already outlast the warranty period most of the time.
Alternatively, you can take Scandia's approach and ditch EGR entirely. They've basically decided that it's better to accept using DEF faster and not run any EGR at all. And I'm inclined to agree. Without EGR the engine will be more efficient, have less DPF issues (the NOx produced by EGR-free combustion actually burns the soot out of the DPF!) and last longer. Which probably adds up to a net saving even though you have to fill up the DEF tank more often.
Holy cow. Poor guy is probably still making payments on the truck and now needs a motor 😭

@@davidhickenbottom6574 not necessarily. I change my oil once a year in a 2018 jeep grand Cherokee and a 65 ford f100 truck. Neither is driven more than 5k a year on a busy year. Neither burns oil and the jeep has 190k on it.

I used to work for Cummins in engineering and testing . This engine was designed back in 2006 for the Ram 1500, then economy crash etc. It was shelved for many years and eventually Nissan came in as a buyer, Toyota was looking but ended up not doing anything. I had several of these engines in test bays and had them in extreme conditions. Some made it some did not. There was an issue with the crank bearings for the earlier year models of the Nissans, lots of engines were replaced under warranty. The issue was eventually corrected but the damage was done. Also being an older design power ratings were pretty low for modern diesel standards. Basically it is putting out as much power as ithe design is capable of and efficiency isn't that great. It is no longer made and existing stocks are likely dwindling with all of the blocks that were failed. It was a good idea at the time but economics preventing from coming to market when it was originally designed and was never updated, also the bearing issue wasn't really discovered until it went into vehicles. So it is Cummins engine that really didn't live up to the name,, unfortunate but that is why it wasn't around long on the market
never heard of this engine but Cummins stop at a truck stop every other truck has a Cummins in it Toyota 5.6 l is a bad ass engine in the heavy suvs

@@DavesAutoCenterCenterville Yes you should hear one running at 5600 rpm for 100 hours overspeed test, it screams almost like an old 2stroke Detroit. Yes that one actually made it through that test. Please post on your fix if you come up with one, I don't remember the exact thing that was changed on that one to fix the issue, but Im thinking it was a change to the rear main, that would tend to spin
You're right. I actually bought my XD because I had high hopes because the DoE helped design the 5.0l, or they consulted IDK.
The NHTSA has an open investigation on Nissan. This information may prove invaluable to them if you go to their website, you can read all about it by searching the make and model.

When you cut open the filter cut off a section of the paper part and wrap it in a paper tower then squeeze it in a vice. You’ll be able to open it up after and see the metal debris much better. Love the videos

Exactly. I have found that some company's would rather pay for good advertising than bad advertising. In other words, yes, they should offer this guy a substantial refund, especially because his waring indicators did not note any problems. I have been successful with this approach in the past.

@@jeffreysnyder4994Cummins went to the CP4 in 2020 but they went right back to CP3 in 2021 for obvious reasons. The Duramax dropped the CP4 too and went to a Denso pump.
Bad news is Bosch makes all the modern injection system so if you buy ford, chevy,vw or Cummins they all are running a Bosch fuel system.

Hopefully do all of service at dealerships! Someways, dealerships make goodwill warranty( customer and dealership share to cost of repair) and I don’t think this car cover up!

Most likely the warranty is gone … for example new gmc trucks come with 30k miles factory warranty anyone that gets a truck their not buying it to have it sit on their driveway they are putting it to work so a 30k mile warranty will be gone within a year depending on the amount of work the truck is being put

New subscriber. My dad was a mechanic i choose the air force and the union trucking. The money and benefits were tremendous. I bought my own truck and ran for 6 years. Im retired now and spend my time on a 1974 corvette that once upon a time ago was a show car im bringing it back to its once glory
As good as Cummins is at making straight 6 diesel engines, it surprises me that this V8 turned out so bad. When they were new, I considered one. Glad I passed.
Cummins makes heavy automotive engines, engines for heavy trucks, farm equipment, mining and geoengineering equipment, scrap yard and recycling equipment and even fixed and portable generators.
The V8 Cummins Diesel is repurposed from industrial engines with an automotive emissions system grafted to it. That motor wasn't designed to operate with such restrictions to exhaust flow and a much wider power band, it was built for generator use at a fixed, narrow power band.

Emissions has killed every engine ever. Look at the gm 5.3 pre 07 it was excellent. Once the afm was introduced it became trash
I believe Nissan initially had another target customer in mind: those who wanted the bells and whistles of heavy duty diesel engines (torque, decent towing capacity) in a smaller, economical, and more manageable package. I don’t think the 5.0 was designed for extremely rough commercial usage; it’s for people who want a diesel non work show truck but didn’t want a gas V8.
That's crazy I got 260,000 miles on my 2016 Nissan Titan XD 5.0 Cummins and I still do the 10,000 mile oil change that's recommended but from day one I've always did all my maintenance. As far as the black oil in people say it was lack of maintenance then apparently you don't know diesel engines. With the emissions and EGR dumps a lot of soot back into the intake which causes that crappy looking oil.

Yes diesels have really black oil no matter the mileage. Unless you have sludge which means you didnt do your oil changes.
Also diesel soot makes its way into the crankcase more easily than gasoline soot, higher compression and finer and more numerous soot particles. I’d be more scared if diesel oil was not black!
My 6.7 Cummins is black a week after I change it.
Yeah diesel engine oil is almost always blacker than black. I do oil changes on semis and some will have 20k miles on the oil, it's nothing like oil out of a gas engine. But for some reason the oil in my own 12 valve Cummins will still be carmel colored after several thousand miles. And even at the oil change interval of 150-200 hours it's still not completely black.

In Australia, the Toyota Landcruiser is quite popular, with the twin turbo diesel V8. The labor, just change the starter motor is US $3000. The labor just to replace a rear main seal is US $6000. So, nobody fixes those vehicles out of warranty, they always get parked in tall dry grass, and burned for the insurance. These are vehicles that in every other way are fine.......low miles, zero rust.
With labor costs like that, I would definitely learn mechanical skills and do the work myself. Couldn't bring my self to burn and destroy a beautiful mechanical device.

The way that you form relatable analogies when speaking to customers (those of which I actually find quite genius) shows that you are a true analyst of your craft. The passion and understanding that goes into your work will continue on past your time. Shops and people like you are the reason AI will never take over the mechanic industry. I hope one day mechanics as a whole are seen as a much more essential part of our economy and considered to be absolutely essential workers.

As an engineer myself I hate workshops (especially oem dealers) not explaining to the customer- often because they don’t understand what they are doing. Often billing for unnecessary stuff.
In case of these engine disassemblies with many work hours, you have to explain to the customer so that they see that their property is in good hands.
I'm a relatively new mechanic, but I've never seen the entire body lifted off the chassis to remove the engine. Mind-blowing.
Diesel power trains are heavy, it's honestly easier to lift the whole cab than a cast iron probably 1000lb diesel engine
Even on gas vehicles it can be the best way to do it, but it requires you to know that vehicle and how to do it efficiently for it to make sense. For some you also drop the whole front out of it, few bolts and wiring harnesses to disconnect and away she goes
When they build front wheel drive passenger cars, that's USUALLY how they do it but in reverse. Bring the engine and transaxle up from underneath with the driveshafts hanging down then put the wheels and suspension components on after guiding the axles and wheels together
That's the way they're engineered today, unfortunately. They want to make things impossible for guys like me who pulled engines in our backyards from a tree limb.
You have to pull the cab off the frame to work on the FORD POWERSTROKE Pickups as well!

Yeah that’s what happens when you keep increasing the power without making changes to the engine architecture. DodgeRam/Chrysler don’t understand this, and neither did Navistar in the early 2000’s.
Yeah and they have to comply with all these emissions standards the morons in Washington are making up now. They always have some bogus numbers about diesels and the damage they do to the ozone. It's gone too far now
Lol Cummins stopped making v8s a long time ago for a reason They basically said ok even though that V8 diesels suck go ahead and knock yourself out by putting them in a Nissan. Also you can thank iveco or whoever decided to reinvent the wheel on the 6.7s because it wasn't all Cummins. When Fiat bought Dodge they were bound determined that they were going to try and eliminate Cummins from all of their acquisitions. First they started on case IH but they realized that they couldn't do on dodge so they came out with the 6.7 with a mixture of iveco and Cummins parts.
ISB 6.7 cummins in our box trucks at Penske have constant oil consumption problems. We've lost hundreds of engines at this point across the country, and we're a fleet with very good maintenance. Can't imagine all the vehicles not in a good fleet maintenance program like Penske.
@@kodykj2112 ever since the EPA kept changing the rules and regulations the worst diesel engines became. A older 5.9 Cummins could go a million miles easy but nowadays I don't believe any diesel could with all the regulations that have been placed and even the fuel quality isn't what it used to be. Also a lot of oil manufacturers have removed sulfur from their oils, a critical ingredient for diesels.

We swapped out a 2020 L5p duramax the other day, it had 178,000 miles on it. It was around 24k installed and that was with parts and labor.

Dave's initial assessment, that there was blowby, which caused the oil leak(s), then the engine was ran low/out of oil, is likely the scenario.
As to what caused the blowby, that could have been a malfunctioning injector dumping fuel, causing a burned piston, broken compresssion rings, or other situation that started leaking compression into the crank case.
I am an engine core buyer, to that end, I part out a lot of Cummins (Ram), Power Stroke and Duramax engines and it's almost an adventure with each engine, as the damage can be widely varied.
Each revision of a given engine platform can have it's own unique issues, almost on a year-by-year basis.
Waited for this video, when mine does the 2 piece crankshaft conversion I'll be trailering it to you for full build.

Well Dave I watched your video when it came out because I own a titan and I've been seeing more and more of us with this same issue. I figured I was good with mine it's been a great truck, always on top of Maintenance but last Monday my truck shut off while going highway speeds, lost everything was scary as heck. No warning, no bang, no engine lights. I checked the fluids that morning, I'm a heavy duty tech by trade and have only owned diesels. 167,000km and I now own beautiful lawn ornament. Still owe alot on it, and parts are insane to fined and pricy as he'll. Can't wait to see what you do. Im unsure as he'll on what to do. If I put a used motor from anything but a 19 (revised crank, cummins knows there's a issue) my truck is a ticking grenade again and id be so deep into it with a new engine I couldn't get rid of it. First "new" low milage truck ive owned in my young life. Didn't expect nissan and cummins to leave us guys behind. 28k canadian for a long block. 15k for a used motor from a wrecker, 20k for a used 19 motor. 14k at nissan for a short block and crank.

That’s a Fleetguard oil filter they pulled off which is first fit for all Cummins engines. I got $100 bucks says the dude never changed the oil in 40k miles.
Absolutely nothing to suggest that happened...most guys use fleetguard- no reason not to as it's oem and it's just as affordable as aftermarket. There's gotta be hundreds of cases of this happening on trucks that are maintained perfectly fine. At the end of the day Cummins dropped the ball plain and simple- and the worst part is they shrug their shoulders and leave the customer out to dry. Tons of these engines blow up right around 100k-105k which is the mileage that the warranty is over. Cummins and Nissan blames a lot of them on deleting but I think most of the damage is done while stock and then the extra hp of deleting is the last straw.

Hey Dave I would bet if you called Cummins an spoke with them and explain what the customer explained to you and then what you found when tearing it down I would like to think that with them knowing that it only has 40,000 plus miles they might send you a replacement motor ! Talk is cheap and it's possible that Cummins would do the right thing ! Just a thought !

Don't blame only Cummins. This was on Nissan. I figure every failure is due to them specing an engine to cut costs. Not for the consumer but their bottom line. My advice don't buy a modern diesel. Also don't buy a modern gasoline vehicle.

Dave; I am very impressed with the work that you do and how you truly care about the customers. One thing I would get away from is all the doctor and patient talk. When the customer is called with a problem they already don’t understand I feel it only confuses them more trying to make comparisons to things they’ve never even heard of.
Dave, I love the way you and your son actually get your hands DIRTY lol rather than using gloves. The sign of a true Mechanic rather than a 'technician' lol. I'm looking forward to this rebuild. And surely Cummins offer a bottom end a lot cheaper than the Nissan price?
This is not the first Nissan cummins engine I've seen this happen to, in fact I've heard its pretty common, bad name for Cummins.
Yeah, time to go hunting for a good rebuildable core. I'd still like to know: what caused the severe blow-by at only 40K miles?
With it wiping out all the bearings, it was starved of oil. If it got ran low or the oil pump went bad only time will tell. A bad filter can cause it, the filter media collapses and a cheap filter with a poorly designed bypass and you get instant oil starvation. If it was ran low it will show up in the computer logs, the filter he already took apart and it didn’t look to have had a collapse issue, so my bet at this point is the oil pump stopped pumping oil for some reason. But that’s from the limited footage available so we shall see what the future holds.
I worked as a Diesel Fitter @ coal mines in Australia. In 2011 we received the first C series V 20 Caterpillar 797 F ultra class trucks. Caterpillar put soft main bearings in the engines. Arrived @ work 1 morning, there was a 20 hour old engine sitting on the work shop floor in a cradle. There was a hole in the side of the block, about size of a mans head. Con rod made a bolt 4 freedom. Caterpillar had 2 remove engines from the whole fleet.

There are so many worse industrial offenders to emissions, let alone India and China, our approach yields so little result for all the other things it creates from more parts built, more solvents used to make repairs, and on and on, let alone an army of administration in government running programs with 100 million dollar budgets to enforce standards that are a teaspoon in a swimming pool.

Everytime I see these sorts of videos, I decide to keep my reliable 2008 Honda a while longer. I am too old to embark on these frustrations, I'll rent anything bigger the few times a year that I need one.

I was extremely close to buying one of these. The idea of a small diesel “heavy half ton” or “5/8 ton” pickup was a just right option for me. I did my due diligence and researched them thoroughly and learned they have main bearing lubrication issues. They kill the bearing and snap the crank. There are several very thorough posts online. In the end I went with a Ram. I don’t regret it but I still love the idea of what this truck should have been.
The Titan and Titan XD are still nice trucks if you just stick with the 5.6 gas motor, especially the 2020+ revision with the better transmission. Fuel tank is way too small however.
Now that's a real diagnostic fee, give him credit for the $400 he's already paid into getting diagnosed. And the great thing about it, it wasn't a plug in the computer and call/we couldn't find anything; they actually did work which I really appreciate, unlike the stealerships.
If you pull the wiring harness for the injectors off the engine and give it a good look you'll find the harness gets shorted out and it ends up holding an injector open usually cylinder two or cylinder 6 The injector gets held open flooding the cylinder pounding the bearings until there's no tolerances left Pistons have a hard time compressing liquid. Usually it does involve a broken crankshaft. Common issue but it's still less than 2% of all the Cummins 5.0s produced.

I wanted a diesel truck for 20 years, but told myself I couldn’t afford it. Then I found one in my price range and bought it. Discovered the next day, first full day of ownership it had been wrecked, and the air filter housing had been cracked, causing it to feed dirt to the engine for a while. Didn’t expect the used car salesman to do anything for me as it expressly came with no warranty, and I did not want to put myself in a position for my anger issues to get the best of me. Also I needed a way to get to work, and I’m at work for a month at a time. So I decided to baby it along, save up my money and rebuild it. Having just got married and had a kid money was tight. It made it for 12,000 miles. Spent the last 3 years paying for the world’s heaviest paperweight I couldn’t drive because I’m a man of my word. It was a complete nightmare. I came to the realization that for 20 years I was right. I can not afford a diesel truck. 9500$ worth of parts for me to fix it. That was in 2013. I’m still driving the 1984 dodge d250 I bought for 450$ so I would have a truck. To be honest I love the atrocious gas mileage, especially pulling a trailer. I love dropping all the gears and loosing all the speed, getting passed by everyone as I pull my tractor up the hills. Because that 450$ truck has never let me down. It has driven me halfway across the country to work and back. The other beauty of it is that one of these decades when something or to be honest everything in the driveline gives up the ghost, I can replace every single component for 1500-2000$ and still make out like a bandit for my money spent. I’m talking if the engine died, ate the transmission on its way out the door, tied the driveshaft in a knot and placed it in the rear axle for it to eat somehow, the cost to fix that would be about 4 months of notes on that diesel truck that needed 9500$ worth of parts, and that’s including the initial 450$ purchase price. I wouldn’t take a diesel truck if someone were to give me one. That is a rich man’s game, and I’m not a financially rich man. Seeing this makes me feel for the guy that owns that truck, and also cements my mindset as of lately.

I had an 07 titan gas engine do the same at 50k. Nissan eventually made right, and replaced engine. Was a big fight.
A while back, was considering a Nissan Cummins truck. Opted for a good 7.3 L PowerStroke instead. Looks like the Ford was the better decision.
Every time I say I can tackle something easy myself on a modern engine, something like the image at 6:40 comes and I go like "Nope!"
