  • Some problems you just need to solve yourself. Such is the case with my Robot Vacuum. Nobody seems to have way to automate a closet door to open when the vacuum runs so we made one ourselves. And you can too! Here's everything you need to build one for yourself:

DIY Smart Home Guy creates how-to videos for smart home automation centered around Z-Wave and Zigbee devices. Review videos are generally centered around Hubitat Elevation, SmartThings and Vera. I personally run Hubitat as my primary smart hub, however I do test products on the hubs mentioned. I understand that a home automation hub is not a path for everyone. I chose this path because I am a firm believer is advanced automation and local control.

Ketchup trail is not something I would have come up with. Bravo.

As soon as robot vacuums can climb stairs, I'll start paying attention. Until then, I'm on the sideline. I have just as many square feet on the main level as the lower level, and I'm darn sure not buying two robot vacuums. Vacuuming is also a good way to exercise and I certainly need more of that. Considering your belly comment, maybe you do, too. Keep up the good work though, Pete.

      MIGO Ascender can climb stairs.

Ha! thanks. The stairs thing is annoying, but honestly just having something regularly sweeping and mopping the kitchen makes it worth while. Any other room is a bonus.

This is something I've been thinking about for a while. I love your solution, but before buying a valve motor (genius idea, btw!) and have to rent or borrow a grinder, I think I'm going to try using the Aqara blinds opener (that pulls on a chain) and hook that to my door. In theory, it should work, right? Of course, "working in theory" is why test pilots are so highly paid. 🤣 Also, I thought the ketchup idea was ingenious. I'm going to remember that!

Thanks! You don’t actually need a grinder; a hack saw works just fine, but the grinder is definitely more fun. The problem with the blind opener is that you need some force to bump the bifold door out first. Maybe if it was mounted at an angle? I’d love to hear how it works if you give it a try.

what font are you using that make the text overlay Ts look like crosses?!

Or, you could’ve just removed 3 inches from the bottom of the bifold door. Sure it looks a little bit odd which might not satisfy the wife.
