Stone Temple Pilots, one of the most talented, successful yet underappreciated bands of the 1990s. They deserve to be in the Rock HOF- though the Hall is a joke.
Agree but at the same time, fuck that rock hall. So many great bands are ignored. It’s a badge of honor to not be in. Why have that bogus institution make money off of great bands?
@@stevehope6283 Steve, I used have a mental list of bands that deserved to be in the rock hall, but in recent years most have been elected (likely due to running out of artists; more and more artists are from the Country and Rap/Hip-Hop genres). But I think STP is near the top of that neglected- and definitely underappreciated list.
Interstate Love Song is possibly my favorite song from the 90’s. You can’t deny a song that gives you the same feeling after all of these years as the day you first heard it
What is great about this interview is that we got to explore the depth of Robert Deleo… something that has been missed or overshadowed by STP as a whole and Weiland as the frontman. I loved how Robert gave the others their due… who knew (not me) that Eric was a part of writing music more than just drums.
Yes, and we can all see Eric taking a Leadership Role--Naturally, as Drummer--with his Excellent and Very Confident sense of Time as he counts-off the start to the songs...
@@dxfifa You Have Every Right To Say That! 😂 😆 😂 Me being "Old And Broken", however, Well...I prefer simply to say: "Out of ALL of those 'Supposed And Alleged' 'Grudge Bands'--**I LOVE STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, BEST!!!" 😊 😁
I'm not a big fan, but of all the so called "grunge" music, they are 2nd to none. A lot of sound, especially with no keyboards. Very sorry about the lead singer, greatest voice ever.
Bravo. One of Ricks BEST interviews. Robert was so forthcoming and open about everything i learned a TON about his writing and influence on the band. This was brilliant to watch and I cant wait for more...
Honestly-always liked STP a lot; however, this interview in its entirety was the first full video I’ve ever watched of Rick’s and when it was over, I wanted more. I have a completely different way of looking at STP, their process, and the unique journey they took in creating some of the most memorable rock music of the time period. I had a friend in high school that was absolutely googly giddy over STP-I was like yeah, they’re good. Now I get it. Respect to this dude.
Have you checked out Rick's channel? There are TONS of interesting videos. He has a series of vids called "what makes this song great" where he breaks down songs and talks about production details--Interstate Love Song is one of them and its great. Alot of interviews and other content as well.
I remember when they hit the scene people were stating they were ripping off Pearl Jam or a Pearl Jam clone band. Just because the vocals from the song Plush reminded people of Eddie Vedder. STP is so much more than than that one song. They are on top with all the greats of that era.
Absolutely one of my all-time favorite bands of all time. As a Dominican, this is who got me into progressive Rock music. I still can't come across another band as well rounded as them.
The depth of musical knowledge, talent, and commitment isn't obvious in the glare of fame, but Rick knows it when he hears it, and shares it with us. Great stuff.
In every style of music, there are hundreds of musicians that just make up grooves, but then there are always a small handful of truly trained and educated craftsmen that actually compose. These artists build on structure, music theory, and have a deep understanding of their craft. The Eagles, members of Toto, sessions musicians, and these stealth masters. Go listen closely to Alice in Chains "Dirt" album. Those 1st 3-5 songs are all done in alternative time signatures, layered harmonies. Some grunge bands were just garage punk in drop tunings. Others were really thought-provoking musicians.
I love the he style of interviews Rick does. It gets to the matters I’m interested in the most which is the music and the inspiration behind it. Ricky plays the song and the interviewer is instantly taken back to the time the song was made and how it was made. This was one of my favorites. Always look forward to these
The DeLeo brothers are criminally underrated. The band as a collective is iconic, but individually they should’ve received more recognition. I doubt anyone would know Robert wrote this piece without your interview
Saw them in 2000... metal heads ,hippies, rastas, nu metalers, punks... all singing along together to Interstate Love Song.... good times man. RIP Scott, you are missed!
The song vasoline came from the blinker on Roberts old car ... The repetitive tiktik tiktik tiktik inspired him with the songs riff. Just pure genius !!
This interview made me reevaluate my whole relationship with stp. I liked them before, but have a whole new appreciation. Mr. Deleo is a class act in every sense of the word!
After almost thirty years hearing this song and seeing it live multiple times, it still hits me in a way that is special. One of the greatest rock songs ever written.
I came across the live versions of Core and Purple the band uploaded in 2020 and it’s great how they are still carrying on. The new singer does a wonderful job.
I always thought Robert Deleo was criminally underrated. I was surprised when I read the liner notes to see just how much he had written for STP. Incredibly talented musician.
Channeling your Jobim! There is such a bittersweet feeling when discussing STP and how their music continue to make us feel. Fantastic interview with a brilliant musician. Wish you had asked him about his bass posture with the long strap length and neck angled a la Bill Wyman.
Likely because its comfortable for him to position the bass in a kind of vertical orientation. He plays it like an upright bass (doublebass/standup bass).
“Pearl Jam Clone”…perfect example of critics trying to define your experience for you and denigrate your musical experience. I was drawn to STP because of their thick guitar tracks…complex chords played with very high gain that didn’t turn to mush. Perfect trio sound.. EVH went there too. Loved PJ too, but in an entirely different way.
Excellent interview, Rick! Robert was insightful and a very smart dude. His musical library is quite good, and it shows up in one of the best alt-rock bands of the 90’s. If I could take a Time Machine back to my Hs days to sit and jam out STP with my buddies, price would be no object.
lovely. I really can’t understand the harsh criticism STP went through back in the day. to me they have never sound like a poor copy of Pearl Jam or anything like that to be honest
I agree. If Pearl Jam was Uber, STP would be Lyft. Maybe their greatest sin is to be first at really nailing the “grunge” sound as result of listening to soundgarden, Pearl Jam and the rest of the of the Seattle lineup. Still great freaking songs with their own unique flavor.
Agree, and iirc the critics focused on “Plush”, when that comment was made, yet when one listened to CORE, the depth and variety of STP was evident. Still one of the best debut albums imo
As a mild (not major) STP fan I can say, without prejudice, ILS was one of the top ten rock songs of the 90s- and that’s saying a lot. It’s really a beautiful and remarkably unique track and it’s aged as well as anything that came out of that time period
I want to hear him talk about every little detail of their entire song catalogue. STP is one of the most underrated bands there ever was. They're so damn diverse and unique.
One of the best bands of Rock. They had it all in their lineup. Weiland was arguably in the top ten of greatest singers in Rock and Dean Deleo always played to the song instead of "LOOK AT ME!!!", like Slash.
This guy is one of the most brilliant guitarists of that era.
Agreed - and he's the STP bassist; his brother, Dean is the talented guitar player in the band!
