I love and often travel the world alone. I dont have to worry about someone getting out of bed, "what do you want to do?", blah blah blah. Being alone, doesn't mean lonely. I can talk to anyone and enjoy meeting people, never bothers me. But, I am some what of a lone wolf anyway. lol

I am 60 years old and have been traveling since I was 20. While I used to enjoy solo journeys, I now find that I'm more comfortable traveling alone during the day. However, after sunset, I often feel a frequency shift-a need for companionship that has become stronger as I’ve aged. In fact, I’ve noticed that if I’m on my own, I’m less inclined to go out at night.
This isn’t about dependency or emotional needs; it’s simply a reflection of my current preferences. I have a deep respect for those who thrive on solo travel-I see many people doing it and admire their independence. But for me, it's important to be honest with myself about what I want at this stage of my life. By acknowledging my preferences, I avoid the uncertainty that comes from ignoring them, which helps me live a more content and fulfilling life-whether I’m traveling solo or with a companion.
I understand there’s a belief that "you" are your own companion, but that’s not the point I'm making here. My perspective is simply about personal preferences, not existential views.

Solo is BEST way to travel. No drama, compromise, frustration with another. Do what I want when I want. No plan or make a plan as desired. Also can usually slip into front of a big queue without people going bonkers. Amazing at airports. Nothing more important in world to me than me. Only live once so be one of the happiest people on the planet!

I am a permanent location independent solo slow traveler. I am emotionally available to myself and others. I am responsible for my happiness and my intimacy. I love my lifestyle more than anytime in my life. I just visited Vietnam, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Indonesia and the Philippines. I have dozens of local friends from those countries. I stay away from foreigners because I am a cultural explorer and want to learn from locals. My friendships are true and deep. I was invited to 5 weddings. I would never have met as many locals as I have with a companion. One day I will strike into a country and have a long term companion. I wouldn’t have my life any other way. I am never lonely. I have a very rich relationship with myself. I do have the super powers you talk about. I am sincere, open hearted, friendly, respectful and very interested in the goodness of others.

Sighs**. Awesome high value content. Those dishes for 2 dollars . Those are enormous holy grail dishes. Back in the states we ordered a large coffee and a grilled cheese to go, Dunkin donut, we waited at the speaker and had to call out hello, anyone there, $8.84 grilled cheese bread was oval and inadequate it was so small it fit into my palms, very unappealing. We drove away and we were discussing Thailand food. Grateful for food but wow. Returning for the entire month of December using Bangkok as a operation center ,Langsuan Rd. Chidlom- After landing we will use transit to navigate through the labyrinths. We truly felt free in Thailand, refreshing and such a great value. Your the best Chris thank you ! 😊

Thank you for articulating a somewhat personal subject. I agree with what you said. Litmus test for me is, 'am I happy traveling alone or when I'm with someone?' The answer for me is that I'm much more happy, positive and outreaching when I'm traveling alone. I do question myself, am I being selfish? I then fall back to my litmus test. Traveling with someone has it's conveniences but for me the baggage outweighs the convenience.

    Enjoying these vids.
I been in Central America for 3 years. I have found the ugly lonliness, how it feels, has much to do with how your caretakers treated you when you were a child.
If you were valued, you likely naturally learned to value yourself and are mostly comfortable on your own.
If you had a unsavory childhood, like me, where you weren't valued, weren't welcomed, or even abused, time alone often transports our psyche back to childhood when we were in a full house of people but were ignored and neglected.
What has helped? A good therapist who understands childhood trauma, narcissistic parents, cptsd. Inner child work. And super important, having or creating relationships with people who value and appreciate you.
    All the best folks!
I still get lonely, but its not the dull, inner pain as much as it used to be.

I typically travel for 2.5 weeks at a time, twice per year; not retired yet. I don't get lonely. In fact, I find travel is my social time of the year. In my home and at work I used to get lonely, but I've become used to it. Though, I do miss something else and when I travel I find many opportunities. My mistake has been trying to make certain kinds of girls into long-term material and each time it fails!

I find myself 10x more social when I travel, meet 10x more people when compared to at home country. Because you do throw away the burden of being you, when you travel you are new person in a place nobody know you . Thai are prob the mostly friendly people to talk to in the whole world. If i want to meet or travel with fellow international travelers I just stay at $10 dorm hostels and meet fellow travelers that’s living with you. Who are eager to meet new people as well. I think that’s why dorm hostel are made for really. I don’t know how many new friend you met at your home country each year, but I certainly meet more when traveling

Unfortunately others said No. I believe that helps you with feeling good and meeting people on positive level. The people who said No was surprised by their answer because they never thought about if you don't like yourself how that impacts being with others. I always travel solo, it's the best. When I travelled to Tikal in Guatemala I spent nearly 7 hours at the ruins because it was overcast in the morning and I wasn't getting any good shots, so I retraced my steps as the sun came out and retook photos of all the temples. There's no way I could have done that without annoying someone had I not been alone.

It's an interesting thing, meeting people while traveling far from home. The sense of connection grows strong faster. I am less than a year from pulling the FI/RE plug, and I've already made so many connections just talking shit with vloggers in the places I plan on seeing. I've even got a couple of offers for a couch to crash on, which speaks to the generosity I see in a lot of minimalist, stoic, red pill, expat (whatever your driving philosophy!) types.
I did the same thing in Europe as a much younger man, but before the internet was really a thing. People on walkabout were still so generous and open to making meaningful friendships that don't require a lot of maintenance - "just drop a postcard here and there" type of friends, and I've kept a lot of them for decades.

@@RetireandGo I have lots of pics. Most of them fuzzy, because cameras were horrible in the 90s. But you're right - there are a lot of interesting things that the internet has completely killed. This ranges from traveling blindly based on personal recommendations to just basic everyday misbehavior in pubs and such because nobody had their iphone in your face 24/7.
I'm not saying it was always good, or wholesome, or even legal, but like any good Gen Xer, I would rather get punched in the nose for stepping out of line than get cancelled because some Nelly decided to tell on me.

Hello, In years past I traveled in Panama and Colombia solo preparing our new condo that was bought in Panama. My wife followed a year later once everything was set up. While I was away my wife had quality solo time in the States. Married people should not be joined at the hip unable to function without the other. 24/7 of anyone is too much! We have been married for over 30 years now. What we have learned is both of us can operate independently of the other with no issue. This causes less stress as we are both independent, but we choose to be together as that is also a wonderful thing. At some point one of us will check out permanently, but we know that the other will be able to handle life without issue. Remember, at some point, every person you know (including yourself) will be gone. Even if happily married to a wonderful person.... be independent.

When you are alone you are forced to find your own way. There is nobody to help you anymore. All people should go through this. The sooner in life the better. Yes it's hard at times but that is life. No bailouts or excuses anymore. I have been traveling for the last year solo after my Father died. Mother died 10 years ago. I sold everything that I owned in LA and left. I have a suitcase and backpack. That is my life. How long I can do this emotionally I don't know but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thanks for answering the question about loneliness, I think you also need to have strength of character to be able to deal with that and have a form of purpose to fill time with. You have clearly found that by way of your channel which certainly fills a niche for low cost, mostly solo travel. I think there is many "expats " that often fall in that loneliness and boredom trap that pushes them towards the bottle and " fleeting " contacts that eventually leaves them astray on the path towards bankruptcy and/or a shortened lifespan. I think for many people that contemplate retirement early in Asia or somewhere else cheaper than the West, you needto at least have a rough plan as to how to , usefully, apply your copious amounts of time, if not, sooner or later you will get lost in the wrong direction, hard to return from....

If you have time- maybe on a rainy day, I recommend the book The Age of Reason (L'âge de raison) by Jean-Paul Sartre.
Maybe you can find it in one your bookstores.
    From Wikipedia...
"The Age of Reason is concerned with Sartre's conception of freedom as the ultimate aim of human existence.
The work seeks to illustrate the existentialist notion of ultimate freedom through presenting a detailed account of the characters' psychologies as they are forced to make significant decisions in their lives.
As the novel progresses, character narratives espouse Sartre's view of what it means to be free and how one operates within the framework of society with this philosophy.
The novel is a fictional reprise of some of the main themes in his major philosophical study Being and Nothingness (1943). One of the notions is that ultimately a person's freedom is unassailable as it is fundamentally part of the nothingness that is the imagination and so cannot be taken away or destroyed."
