Thank you for having the patience to walk us through that repair, Phillip! I rarely get tired of learning! Irene has a curve that matches the trunk. When I built my jig, I made it tall enough that I could work inside the body either standing, or sitting on a rolling stool. I'm old, and like to get comfortable when I weld! Enjoy! Be safe!
Bro Harry
I cant remember if I already asked you, but how tall was your stand exactly?
28 inches from the floor to the mounting surface.@@phillipshotrodgarage
Thank you!
The coupe is looking good! Glad RUclips algo decided to drop your video in my playlist
I appreciate it! Thanks you for watching and checking out my channel. Feel free to comment and ask questions any time!
Looking great, repairing the old and saving $$$ on boxed parts 👍
Thanks 👍
Another great job Phil. I think the repair you did on that trunk was the best option.
Thanks 👍 Appreciate it!
It turned out great, and yes, that valance panel needs more curve.
Thanks! I thought so.
Hey Phil, I'm also a Phil and have a 28-29 special coupe, so thanks for the videos they are helping me with my project.
Awesome Phil! Glad to have you watching.
Looks very good all your hard work is paying off. Thanks for the videos.
Thank you for watching! Appreciate it!
Rumble seat
It was originally a rumble seat car. I have a real descent set of seats and all the hinges, but I decided to go with a trunk instead. Thanks for watching!
Been a while since I sold my 'A', Phillip, but I'm 99% sure the lower back panel was curved to match the curve of the trunk lid.
Thanks Bob!
Looks fantastic, Phillip...
I don’t believe that you could have gotten a better fit,, even if you’d had bought a new lid...
And I believe that you are correct on that lower panel,, a slight curve in it to match the lid...
Looking forward to seeing you build the body jig next...
Thank you sir. I will be starting the body jig tomorrow. I’m looking forward to getting into that.
Nice progress again. I think you are at the point where you need some kind of foundatation where to mount the body on. I am sure that body jig will be a handy.
I think so too. So that’s the plan. I’m gonna start making it all come together soon!
Woohooooo! Bet that feels good
Oh yea it does, that trunk was a lot of work, but it saved me a lot of money LOL.
Awesome !
Thanks, finally getting somewhere!
Turned out really nice! Hey, did you get that belly clamp at Harbor Freight or Mama's table? Lol....I do it too.
Took me many years to get that belly clamp working right.
My 28 has a curve about 1/4" from center to outer edge measuring from the inside the trunk
Thank you!
Hope it helps
Pepsi, yes please! Won't you have a difference bolting up the 32 rear subrails to the stock A frame?
Yes, there will be a different on bolting the body down to a stock frame because of the 32 subrails. Good observations. All the mounting points from the cowl back to where the subrails begin to kick up will be in the stock locations. I will be able to use those, and make the necessary adjustments necessary at the rear of the car. I think I’ll be able to make it work out.
Yes the trunk and lower panel are curved.
Thanks, I thought so. Now I've got to figure out how to curve my lower panel.
@@phillipshotrodgarage English wheel to start the shrinker/stretcher should do it.
Hey Philip what is that goop ya use on metal again hopefully can by it down here so can stop mine from rusting so badly thks again from Canada 🇨🇦 SK later 😊
the name brand I am using here is called OSPHO. It is also sold under other brands such as Klean Strip, which works similar. It's a phosphoric coating. It should be available at your local building supply.
Phil we’re did you get the part that has the two holes for the rubber mounts
Are you talking about the panel at the bottom just inside the trunk opening?
My truck lid has about the same curve as yours does and my aftermarket lower panel don't fit worth a shit . I'm working on trying to get it to fit .it's way too flat
Well, I don't feel alone now. I haven't even begun to figure out a fix for it yet.
I believe there are 2 different lower panels... i could be wrong but i am pretty sure one is curved and one is not
Larry at Boxcar's Garage told me the same thing, but I'm still confused about that. If that was true, then there would have to be a flat trunk lid, and a curved trunk lid also. From all the research I've done, the trunk lids from 28-31 all interchange with the only difference being a difference in the 28-29 vs 30-31 in the ruble lid latch area. So I don't know. I'm going to look at a few cars tomorrow.
@@phillipshotrodgarage ive heard it multiple places and saw a video showing the difference. It didnt apply to me at the time. Wish i had paid closer attn now
Well, I have research to do LOL.
I’m watching RAC Garage and his latest video shows a model a coupe and it seems like the lower panel is straight on his? Could just be cause it’s on video but I wonder if some are and some aren’t due to the fact they were all hand built to begin with?
I don’t know, but a friend told me that he thought that some were straight and some were curved. I don’t know about that though, because from every bit of research I’ve done, I’ve always read that the trunk lid will interchange from 28-31 and nobody has ever mentioned there being a curved one, and a straight one. So, I don’t know. I guess the easiest thing for me to do is add a curve into the lower panel, so I guess mine will be curved. I’m going to look at a friends car tomorrow. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
@@phillipshotrodgarage no problem. I wonder if there’s any sort of classification as to what years are flat and what years are curved. Especially for the people that do concourse quality restoration work. Im sure someone has the answer. Looking forward to the next video.
@@phillipshotrodgarage I did a bit of research on the Ford barn website and it seems that it’s either flat or curved depending on if it was originally manufactured as a rumble seat or a trunk to begin with. Yet I can’t find anything that clearly specifies which one is which. Hopefully you can figure it out.
I'm still not sold on the fact that there is a straight one and a curved one. I know this, there is a distinct difference between a 28-29, and a 30-31 trunk/rumble lid in the area where the ruble latch would mount. you can easily tell the two apart. The lid I just repaired is from a 30-31, no mistaking it. The lid that I cut the repair patch out of is a 28-29 with 100 percent certainty. Both of them were curved exactly the same. The patch from the 28-29 fit right into the lid from 30-31. I really think that they are all curved 28-31, and the replacement lower panel that I have is just made wrong. It will be interesting to find out if my assumptions are correct or not.
Well, based on what I have here, I don't see that. The lid I repaired was a 30-31 trunk lid, and the lid I cut the patch out of to repair it with was a 28-29 rumble lid. Both had the same curve and the patch fit in there perfect. But, the inner panel is different between a rumble seat car and a rumble lid car. I'm talking about the panel that goes inside the trunk that attaches to the lower panel below the deck lid. it's called a curved inner panel on a rumble car, and it's flat on a trunk car. Do you think that's the curved panel they are referring to?
Philip look on youtube ther has to be fellow people who have been in the same problem as you are that might give ya help or clubs that hav ideas close too you don't get crazy my friend ya made it this far it's a glitch thing ya got this l will ask around here will see what we can come up with ok ya got this no worries Philip always a answer to your problem ok later from Canada 🇨🇦 SK later 😊
Thanks man, I’m gonna get it!
Well known that the aftermarket lower panels don't fit well. If you could find an original one and compare, that would be best.
I'm going to look at some tomorrow. I'll make a template to use to fix mine.
