This isn't the Beatles but have you heard the song "Ferry Cross the Mersey" by Gerry and the Pacemakers from 1964?? And, have you ever take a ferry across the Mersey river 🙂 I wonder if people often sing that song when they take the ferry across. (the ferry in question is the one that goes from Liverpool across the Mersey to Brikenhead, in England. I'm always so impressed by Ringo's drumming on this piece. With all that irregular tempo during the "Sun-Sun-Sun" breakdown, he's right there, keeping the band steady on the beat. Such an incredible talent.
It amazes me how The Beatles used an early synthesiser on Abbey Road in such a judicious, subtle and modern way. They just blended it in, didn't go mad with it, and used it to lift the songs and make them sound super fresh.
@@kevanbodsworth9868 There is a lot of over-use of synths in the 80s but to my ear it's a lot less cringey than the 70s. It's actually starting to sound like an instrument and not like a cross-wired door alarm.
George Harrison was so underrated as a guitarist and song writer. He was awesome! All the songs he wrote that the Beatles actually did were some of the best songs. George was underrated as a Beatle, but now he's finally getting the recognition. Like all great artists, he was never really appreciated until after his death! What a shame! I personally loved all his songs. I loved "I need you!" From the movie/album Help! "While my guitar gently weeps", "Something", "Don't bother me", "Bluejay way", "I'm in mine"! Then "All things must pass" the album! Truly a genius in his own right! He was always my favorite Beatle. He proved he was the best actor of the bunch in, Hard days night, and Help! RIP, George, you are missed!
I respectfully disagree. I think that George was absolutely appreciated upon release of “All Things Must Pass,” long before his death. But I do agree that he was awesome!
I love watching younger people discover the Beatles. Especially when they end up really liking them. I'm pretty young in terms of being a Beatles fan, only 36, but I love seeing even younger people getting turn onto them. They're the best ever.
It makes a lot of sense when you said you think you've heard the song in an advertisement. I frequently hear reviewers start by saying they've never heard any Beatle music. I sometimes comment to them that oh yes they have and that they'd be surprised just how much. Their music is everywhere. Nice review!
I don’t think that’s what the song is on about at all, but I love your interpretation! It’s more about how good times will follow dark times in life. It’s not literally about the sun. Whilst mood often reflects the daily weather and quarterly seasons, just remember that no matter how hard things are, the metaphorical sun will eventually shine.
@@mikewoods7167 I don't doubt you're right about that Mike, but that's how I felt when I finally felt the sun's warmth on my face just days ago. No problem accepting George wasn't writing literally about the sun.
I graduated high school in 1970. In my senior year we went on the "Walk For Mankind", a 40 mile walk around the Twin Cities and we got sponsors to pay us by the mile we walked. We started in a football stadium and it was raining. Just before the start of the walk, the sun came out and everyone started singing "Here Comes The Sun". It was AWESOME!!!!! One of the most poignant moments in my life. And, yes, I did the entire 40 mile walk.
This song is the first Beatles song to get well over a billion hits on Spotify leaving all other songs well behind. George was a fenominal song writer in his own right, God Bless him 🙏
I'd love for you to react to The Band's iconic song "The Weight" on their first album "Music From Big Pink." On another show, you might want to react to the same song that they do with The Staple Singers in the movie "The Last Waltz."
I think the way you are approaching this -- no prior background research -- is the right way to go. That keeps your reactions much fresher and more genuine. 👍😉
😂😂😂😂 yes, I didn’t discover them so I was about 12 and they had already been broken up a few years but then got obsessed with them and played the records over and over and over. Didn’t watch the news or know anything personal about them at that point just like the music and I thought, most of them were really cute ha ha. But I remember my parents and grandparents did.not.like.them.at.all!! Set all this rock stuff is going to lead to destruction of the youth and drugs and violence, and I’ll kinds of stuff. There was no talking them out that are them, hating rock ‘n’ roll, even Elvis. I although being 62 now, the world sure has turned out like grandparents and parents told me it would mostly hateful and violent and disregarding of other people, but I doubt this song or this group did that lol hope you enjoyed your song and I like the reaction.
In fact, they were very controversial for their look, their music, their lyrics, and their politics throughout most of their brief career. They only seem wholesome by today's standards.
Yes, you have heard this song in an ad- I forget what they were advertising, but somebody definitely used it in an ad campaign in the last year. If you keep exploring their catalog, there are probably a dozen or so songs you'll recognize from ads. Hello Goodbye, Come Together, and Revolution are three others I can specifically remember. I could probably come up with a few more if I sat down and thought about it.
Another of George Harrison's musical gems was his lesser known , "Old Brown Shoe" song. His post-Beatles hits include "When We Was Fab", and "All Those Years Ago". Both were a nostalgic look back at his time in The Beatles.
An underestimated Beatles-song. For another Harrison I STRONGLY advice "My sweet lord" (single version!), "While my guitar gently weeps" and the swinging "I got my mind set on you"

No John didn't say that, what he said was The Beatles were more popular than Jesus with the kids in England at that time, which was very true because I was a kid then. The Beatles were mega popular.....Jesus not so much. Maybe the Grannies generation would have had a different opinion
Speaking of Adverts, I recall another song called, "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves. Their pop song was used in an Orange Juice advert. And The Beatles song, "Because" was used in a Trailer for the 2017 sci-fi film , "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets". Recently the pianist, Gamazda played an instrumental cover of "Here Comes the Sun". Its very good.
The Beatles is a deep deep dive.. Check out the controversy about paul mcCarthy passing away in a car wreck and replaced by a look alike. So many complexities in that story including of the backwards trackings in there songs. Lile "I barried paul'
The video was made decades later...one of the more tasteful videos...we didn't need videos to sell music back then...just hearing ANYTHING by the Beatles without visuals. Ringo's inventive drumming in this with odd time changes is excellent...may other drummers at the time would not have attempted this except guys like Keith Moon of the Who.
I’m not gonna say “how have you never heard of them”, even though they’re the most popular pop band ever, except “maybe” next to Taylor Swift. When I was in school, I was just a couple of generations removed from the Beatles. I graduated in 1986. I had heard “some” of the music my parents had listened to in the 1950s and early 1960s, but only because I listened to an oldies channel on the radio. There was no internet, back then. Just radio, records, cassette tapes, and cds. Cds weren’t available until the 1980s. I didn’t know anything about music my grandparents or great grandparents listened to. Times change. Life moves on. But I’m glad younger generations are being re-introduced to this music. Without newer technology this music may have died all together.
It would be highly unlikely to have ever heard an original Beatles song, recorded by the Beatles, in any advertising. First, it’s prohibitively expensive and, secondly, John Lennon’s consistent wishes were that they were never to be commercialized. Nike got into a mess with its use of “Revolution” in a tv ad and using the actual Beatles recording ($500k in late ‘80s for one year use). The remaining Beatles (Lennon was murdered in 1980) sued Nike. Michael Jackson owned the rights then and Yoko approved it. However, the three Beatles settled out of court/sealed and the song was pulled by Nike. Sooo, if you do hear a Beatles song in any advert, moving forward, it’s undoubtedly a cover group.
The video for the song is nice, but be aware that IT was created 50 years after the Beatles released the song, and was not something they put out to promote the song originally, unlike films they made for We Can Work It Out, Paperback Writer, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, A Day in the Life, The Fool on the Hill, I Am the Walrus, Hey Jude, Something, etc.
A late comment here. Nothing is more annoying than people who assume that their experience with and exposure to music is universal and the same as everyone else's, and then proceed to take reactors to task for not knowing much about the Beatles/Stones/Byrds/Who/Kinks/etc. etc. There are zillions of media outlets for music nowadays, and no one can ever take them all in - as opposed to when I grew up in the 70s and had a couple of radio stations and a couple of TV channels at my disposal. Even then, I wasn't always up on all the bands of that time, and am still learning at age 61 (and I'm not even counting current bands and performers). So you are doing just fine, and your approach of not doing research beforehand is a good one - it's just like how I heard music back in the day.
London girl? Have you got a journey in front of you or what? Best to react to whole albums, then chop it up into single tracks, and The Beatles have such a catalogue that it’s mind blowing. Happy hunting.
That’s not quite accurate. The remaining Beatles went to court and only covers were/are allowed. Paul McCartney is about one year away from earning enough by having concerts to get his (and John’s) own music back from Sony. ‘Love him for that.
Beautiful reaction to a beautiful song. Most annoying are these people who want to tell us what the song is 'about" and hence deny the listener the freedom to make up his or her own mind. The lyrics conjure up different feelings from various people, let it be.
I agree that's very annoying when they do that. Clearly this song is "about" the Spanish-American civil war and there's no other possible interpretation. Its really the only topic that The Beatles ever sang about.
