@@LesbianMuses I thought the same thing about that house in remote Wisconsin, 50 cents house and the Neverland Ranch. Seems their would be upscale interest in all of those homes. The Idea of being 200 miles away from a major city on a Great Lake should appeal to a lot of people.
Two problems. Property taxes & maintenance costs. The electric bill alone could be $10,000/month. Homeowners insurance would be another bill. Usually people earning a million a month perfer to get an architect and build there own dreams.
@@danielebrparish4271 I'm sure a good business team could get around these "problems". For example, I worked at the Mayo Clinic and it is this huge center in the middle of nowhere plus it gets really cold but rich people from all over the world come to for care year round. Its been the top hospital in the whole country for years. These mansions could be turned into high end rehab/hospital or something similar with all those rooms and the isolation.
@@doctorfritznoel Maybe but renovation/repurposing a building is 50% or more expensive than building new. The Mayo Clinic was built for the Mayo family by a religious organization, not a business group, called "The Sisters of St Francis" in 1899. Although they built a highly successful practice, their current size occurred over a period of a century. The remoteness of many of these properties is also a problem because hospitals require places for staff to live, shop and send their kids to school. They are also dependent on major population centers as a source of customers.
That’s actually a great idea but rich people would rather have no one live in them forever then allow poor people to enjoy what they don’t want. They forget that they were either born with a silver spoon in there mouth or where they came from. In the end they’ll regret it because first will be last and the last will be first
Maintenance would be so expensive that nonprofits would find it impossible to raise enough $$ to operate. If you have $100 to donate to a homeless shelter, would you give it to an organization that serves 200 homeless people housed in an uber mansion that costs millions a month to operate or to one that serves 50 homeless people but costs $10,000 a month to operate? Which gives you more bang for your buck? Even if you run a government agency - which option would be more acceptable to taxpayers?
Also, because housing for homeless or battered individuals should be just as adequate as housing for the rest of us, the cost of bringing these properties up to acceptable standards would also be a tough sell to nonprofits if there are alternatives that wouldn’t require such outlays of capital. Most of us would rather see our donations going directly to those who need help than to a bunch of contractors doing rehab on dilapidated houses. That’s why donors should always pay attention to a nonprofit’s operating and capital expenditures.
You all are too excited. The closest city is 200 miles away. What will you eat and drink? And for how long? In winter you'll be completely cut off. Power outage, heating problem. No neighbours for help in case of emergency.
I bought a 700 sq ft home built 1897 near downtown Salt Lake City in 2011 for $90k on a decent sized lot for the area. We lived in it for about 7-8 years and then dumped $70k into gutting it and renovating it with maple cabinets, stone countertops, modern electrical, alder barn doors and mosaic tile work. Sold it summer 2021 for $350k. Many told me it wasn’t worth renovating but after all of my expenses etc. I made 150k on the sale. It was worth it to me.
Yea but see the people who want it already have funny money bro. If they dont want it itll rot away bc nobody will want to lower the price were anybody can afford it. Itll rot.

I would have settled for a video of the actual houses they're talking about. This thing is literally just a stock footage salad randomly thrown together as they talk about other houses.
yeah, but it's still $2 million dollars. Then there's property tax, cost to maintenance and heat and cool. Taxpayers already absorb the cost of the homeless as well as give dollars and change to daily. Then you have the homeless family looking for the 53rd room. Not to mention the concerns of safety. You never hear about the violence, abuse and rape that occurs in the homeless community. Fantasy worlds always neglect reality.

A dear friend of mine bought a house for a dollar in the '70s and moved the whole thing peace piece by hand and rebuilt it out in the woods. It's still there today.
One thing you also forgot to mention with the houses in Detroit and I'm assuming many other places, the land tax goes by the home's appraisal value. And also the taxes still owed. Just because you pay $1 or even $5,000, if the home was last appraised for $50,000, that's what the taxes are. Even the empty lots aren't listed as a bare lot. So taxes are for the house that was on the lot before it burnt down or was demolished. This may only be about back taxes and maybe you can get things re-appraised and changed for a bare lot, that' I'm not sure of. But it's why I couldn't go downstate and buy one in the suburbs for say $3,500 like I was looking at. Also the past owner may not be happy with the new one, never know what can happen...
Yeah good idea actually. I was thinking condos. A lot of the larger homes here in Massachusetts are historic and converted into condos. Why let the property go to waste?

Step one: become famous fantasy author with a huge fantasy series. Step two: buy the largest house with the most rooms. Step three: convert into hotel with themed rooms from your series. Step four: host huge events people from everywhere could come and join, and stay in one of your themed rooms. Like hear me out. Make it a gorgeous place and everyone dress up as mythical creatures. Sounds nerdy, but the whole place is just one huge DnD campaign based on your books
I’m originally from Michigan, and another reason that most people don’t want to buy homes in the actual city of Detroit and not the suburbs, are the taxes. Part of the city’s financial plan (at least I’ve heard) since they’ve lost so many residents, is to have higher property taxes to help pay for things in the city. That on top of the cost of fixing up some of the old homes, and the fact that living there it could take a very long time for your neighborhood to be in a better state, and it’s been seriously hard to bring residents in. However, some large businesses have moved in, because the city gives them financial tax BREAKS and incentives to move in. So it’s a mess. Detroit has a lot of potential geographically and otherwise, but it could seriously take 100 years for the entire actual city of Detroit to be beautiful again. Downtown is looking better and better, and I really admire people’s efforts there. But wow would I not have the patience to move there myself.
Wouldn’t work I only have a moderate amount of money & I never mention it No one with Cash wants publicity Privacy Practically free until you blow it and become celebrity Then? Privacy is expensive
Being from Vermont I have learned to heat only the areas of my home that have water pipes that can burst and cause severe property damage, and those areas that are kept at a lower temp are easily heated when they are ready for use or to be lived in.
One of the things not mentioned here are the property taxes on these big houses. Sure, the houses may sell for less than market value but then the property taxes would be astronomical. Property taxes are calculated by determining the true market value (as determined by your local government) In many of these cases the property taxes would cost more than the house.
Property taxes? In the UK that big house would cost you NO MORE than $3000 a year. If you lived in it on your own you'd get 25% off. That $3000 is the highest Council tax charge in England and would apply even if you bought Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. We don't have an annual property tax based on value as such, it's just an assessed charge worked out on value (or estimated value if built later) in 1992? (May be a year or two out).
Prop taxes are the most evil scam in centuries. They started growing like deadly mildew many decades ago and now have a stranglehold on America's economy. Even if someone gives you a home, it'll still be worthless after a few years of prop tax punishment. Making "owning" a home not even worth your bother. They need to ban all property taxes, period. Either you totally own something, or you don't.
Another option for some of the properties is deconstructing for re-use... like Habitat for Humanity and other housing groups. Possibly some houses can be repurposed into a tiny house for new residents. Habitat houses don't have to be built with new materials. People can choose what they want in their new house. Small homes are better than large homes. Solar and other alternative energy sources can be added to the new building.
Many of the houses in this vid couldn't be torn down cuz they were under historical protection...which also makes them more annoying to fix up due to all the regulations they come with.
@Tropic Lightning Why do that? It would be an interesting place to visit. If the State were to acquire it, the revenues from the tours would make a fortune.
@@sheilagravely5621 Well, no one knows for sure whether or not he was guilty, but he probably wasn't. I think those kids parents got them to say he was so that they could sue him because he had so much money.
Detroit needs to start either selling just the land and covering the cost of demolition and removal or start paying people the estimated cost of demolition and removal to take over the derelict properties...

The story about the MJ house isn't completely true ... part of the reason for the difficulty selling it is the property restrictions and the neighbors don't want traffic.
$25,000 for a home in rural mountainous, Italy? Sounds amazing! Yes, that's renovation costs but it sounds great. Maybe when I have investment money available.
That one in Connecticut’s seems fine. Just rent the extra bedrooms out to people you know and tell them to clean up their own mess, so maids don’t feel overwhelmed. Or just turn it into a fancy hotel
Those huge houses with hundreds of rooms and bathrooms can easily be turned into luxurious hotels for billionaires instead of trying to sell them as houses. Or if companies were feeling generous (which most arent) could turn them into shelters, orphanages for the overly crowded foster system etc.
First MJ's family doesn't own it. He lost it in a foreclose/forfeiter after his last law suit case. The company that owns it took out the zoo, the amusement park, and renamed it. And the kids couldn't afford it or the expensive maintenance and up keep.
I live like 2-3 hours away from the first one, to get to it I'd have to drive an hour up north, and take a boat (I'm assuming it's on a island) and I'd love to live there.
I was thinking something similar. The Lake Superior could be rented as a camping motel, taxidermy animals donated to a zoological museum, guns to collectors. Or just disposed. Michael Jackson's house could be a theme park mixed with a museum, just marking the areas, and info personal keeping the museum part 'free of play'. That 50c & posse place could be a shelter: just selling the stables (or was that Jackson's house). These mega mansions... money well spent!? Better just keep investing and donating. If you want to treat your friends, buy a hotel and hire a pro manager. Once your friends visit, treat them a suite for the weekend or month they stay. In a mansion the empty rooms are sure to starts to creep on you. Won't feel home. If you don't ask 50 of your best friends and relatives come to live with you, maybe with a rent adjusted to their incomes (and then with a discount) so they stay sane.
That log home in Michigan isn't remote enough for me, but it'll work! Supplies aren't that hard to get in today's world and I wouldn't change one thing. Removing the taxidermy would not change the fact the animals perished isn't going to bring them back, and they are beautiful animals, it is a shame that this happened to them, but I'd honor their beauty forever. Plenty of space for sure. I'd do it in a heartbeat. Out dated interior to one is just classic and perfect to someone else. I love the older style!
Just wanted to pop on to say that Bannerman's Castle does do tours of the island during the nicer months, and it's actually really nice and historical! There's also a nice elderly lady that occasionally does story telling of her time living at the island (She was a young girl at the time before moving off the island)!

True, we now have solar panels and biogas for lighting and heating
I feel like some of these homes could be reused for homeless shelters and battered women's/men's shelters.
That’s what I’d do with the 50cent/ Mike Tyson house.
Unfortunately I doubt it'd ever happen though
That first mansion would be a dream to live in during the Covid pandemic
agreed the 1st one
For sure 😁👍

That first house can EASILY be a resort....seclusion, lakeside views, just needs to be set up that way

yeah, but it's still $2 million dollars. Then there's property tax, cost to maintenance and heat and cool. Taxpayers already absorb the cost of the homeless as well as give dollars and change to daily. Then you have the homeless family looking for the 53rd room. Not to mention the concerns of safety.
I don’t see why some of these properties couldn’t be subdivided into really cool apartments, provided the walls are in good shape.

Being from Vermont I have learned to heat only the areas of my home that have water pipes that can burst and cause severe property damage, and those areas that are kept at a lower temp are easily heated when they are ready for use or to be lived in.
"Mansions no one wants for even 1 dollar that cost 20 million dollars."
Go on.
Exactly
One of the things not mentioned here are the property taxes on these big houses. Sure, the houses may sell for less than market value but then the property taxes would be astronomical. Property taxes are calculated by determining the true market value (as determined by your local government)
In many of these cases the property taxes would cost more than the house.
They need to knock all them houses down. Only a fool blinded by money would purchase one of these properties
Not if you squat in it
Prop taxes are the most evil scam in centuries.
50 cent mansion i'll also put my whole family there and friends
That's hilarious someone should make that movie
I hope someone picks up that first log cabin. It’s so perfect!
Solar and other alternative energy sources can be added to the new building.
yes excellent idea and you can end up with a pretty nice house when your done. I wonder if there are places like that in Canada?
Many of the houses in this vid couldn't be torn down cuz they were under historical protection...which also makes them more annoying to fix up due to all the regulations they come with.

The fact that it is a "historic" home means you have numerous hoops to jump through and regulations to abide by. Hence it is open to buyers.
@@crayonparfait Granot Loma (vid preview pic) is a registered historical site and is owned by one of the world's most successful bonds traders that has always considered himself the caretaker and not the owner. That is why he hasn't sold it. It's not because no one wants it, he just won't sell it to anyone that will be the caretaker and not the owner. If you were legally allowed to remodel and decorate he would have a bid frenzy but you can't and that's the way it should be.
History behind Granot Loma...it was constructed and owned by one of the world's wealthiest bankers, Kaufman, and the first place the blueprints for the empire state building were viewed by a public figure was at Granot Loma on the main dining room table. His name is on the gold emblem in the entrance of the empire state building as a key investor.

This one strangely reminds me of Michael Corleone's home from Godfather II (I know it isn't the same building, just getting the vibes here)
Am wondering , some of the houses are good to turn them to hotels, or any entertainment projects
khalil Abu Kabeer exactly the 50 cent house and never land you could charge thousands to stay the night.
@@bugsy220791 maybe not 50 but definitely Neverland. Ppl would line up to spend the night there. The world loved MJ
Specially the Log Cabin on it's own Island. Hotel/Resort, B&B, turn each bedroom into a Studio Apartment... Meth Lab....
Or taking section 8 voucher. It pays more than $1.00.
The story about the MJ house isn't completely true ... part of the reason for the difficulty selling it is the property restrictions and the neighbors don't want traffic.
Yeah the guy was just spewing nonsense. His narrative on neverland was rubbish

$25,000 for a home in rural mountainous, Italy?
Sounds amazing!
Yes, that's renovation costs but it sounds great.
Maybe when I have investment money available.

50s Mansion can literally be a luxury hotel...
"It'll take millions to redo the rooms"
-rolls sleeves- Let me show you...the magic of the Balkan DIY
I'd move into that log cabin on lake Michigan in a heartbeat 💓
More like: million dollar homes that no one wants for their current asking price which is a helluva lot more than $1
That one in Connecticut’s seems fine.
Wow that's amazing.... So beautiful.... Loved it...
Couldn't people just turn the large houses into hotels or retreats? And also why wouldn't Jacksons kids want to keep it for sentimental reasons.
First MJ's family doesn't own it. He lost it in a foreclose/forfeiter after his last law suit case. The company that owns it took out the zoo, the amusement park, and renamed it. And the kids couldn't afford it or the expensive maintenance and up keep.
Your comment on this video shows how little you know about owning a house.
@@magikp6636 what are you saying that's crazy

@@wayupsoftly What do you mean??
Someone needs to buy some of these and turn them into destination resorts.
I live like 2-3 hours away from the first one, to get to it I'd have to drive an hour up north, and take a boat (I'm assuming it's on a island) and I'd love to live there.
they can turn some of these houses into a shelter for the homeless and hire professionals like life coaches and social workers
I think they are scared of the cost of maintenance of these huge houses
I’m trying to understand why it’s even on this list in the first place. One of these things is not like the other.
(And, I’ve been there, I love it!!)
The castle was unsafe even when it was Bannerman's home.
@@dianalindeman1644 Oh yeah, absolutely. The fool built it with almost no right angles and decided to store GUNPOWDER in it--after making the floors out of oiled wood from ships. Man, I'm amazed what still stands is even standing at all.
But it's infinitely less safe now.
Nobody becomes a millionaire or a billionaire by working for others and depending on them, good investment bring millions of dollars, and consistency brings billions, the market is all about BTC at the moment now....

I would live in that first house 100%. I live in Michigan, I love to fish, be in the wilderness, I’m an introvert, it looks cozy, and I love cold weather. If I’m ever that rich to buy that house I think heating and redecorating the rooms (I kinda like the look of the rooms) will be the least of my worries
