i love the run from like a ritual through make you cry and that's one of my all time favorite collection of songs but i rarely listen to this album all the way through, unlike i do with shed. it's just not as consistently brilliant
Thought you were a little harsh on the album. As a musician in a pop-punk/post-hardcore myself, trying not to sound derivative is a near impossible task in this day and age. I think TF blends their influences quite masterfully, especially on Floral Green. 8/10 album for me.
Lefty is still my favorite song. He jus don’t like it because he hasn’t screamed “BAD LUCKKK NEVVERRRR LEAVVEESSS” in his car full volume. He’d give it a ten otherwise.
I like this guys style of review. Pretty fair and inoffensive. But it seems like alot of his opinions r based on his huge familiarity with sooo much other music. Most ppl probly havent evn listened to all those other bands in THAT much depth. That being said this album is awesome. Imo
yah i have to agree with you, alot of anthony's opinions,do reflect on the other artists that he listens to. If he just listened to rock music, like I do, and stuff like Title Fight, then i think he would give a higher score than just a 7/10, but since he listens to so much other music, i think it kinda changes it for him. To me this is my fav band, and my fav album by them, and personally i just stopped watching the video when he started to try to point out the negative things. but its all just opinion, especially with music, people have different tastes in it, and since anthony listen to so many different genres, you know, it changes the way he sees stuff like title fight
No.... Just no. Floral green is pure Title Fight. It is melodic, heartfelt and meaningful. I don't know why you kept on comparing them to other bands. They're not trying to be any other band, just them.
Tim Castle yeah but those bands did it first. I get what you mean, imo title fight does sound better, but fantano has this thing where if a band or artist does something first, he likes them much more than if they hadn't . I guess he's appreciating that the band is taking risks, trying something new even if it isn't as polished as a band in the same genre who didn't do it first. Like for example, his main complaint with a lot of metalcore bands like bring me the horizon is that they use these overused metalcore riffs and breakdowns, implying that if they had done it first, he wouldn't be criticizing them for that. I feel like I'm rambling but I hope you get my point. Title fight is more polished and better at the genre than those bands but they didn't do it first, didn't put a new spin on it
coming back to this, at the time i wasn’t crazy about this album and much preferred Shed but as i’ve given this album so many more listen and have actually learned some of the songs, i can confidently say it’s one of the greatest ever put to record. every single song has something distinct and unique about it yet it all ties together so perfectly. title fight will be so sorely missed.
or maybe not cuz the main dude is like if Cam from Sorority Noise came back, and no one cared about the sexual assault part. also the music is kinda wack.
Opinions are totally subjective, but I disagree with the suggestion that there is little original identity on this record. It’s certainly not a groundbreaking album by any means, it makes loads of overt nods to plenty of 80s and 90s artists like you mentioned. However, the real strength of this record is the how it showcases Title Fights ability to slide around under the umbrella of alternative or post hardcore while still churning out consistently strong songs. In addition, I think that the fact that most songs on FG follow in the footsteps of Shed, in that they’ll follow a melodic/dynamic idea for a bit, maybe even most of a song, and then take a hard turn into something else is a pretty underrated quality not only of this album, but title fight in general. They’re definitely a band that gets a bit ruined by their fans tho imo, along the same lines as Mac DeMarco. Edit: also totally worth noting that the production on this album is pretty much the gold standard for the whole 2010-2015 rfc 90s throwback scene, and you could see bands trying to imitate it almost immediately.
Ok I would like to get something straight about title fight... THEY ARE NOT POP PUNK!! sure they may sound a bit pop punk, but those are most likely the emo influences your hearing in their songs! and u cannot compare Title fight's albums to blink 182's albums they are two very different bands
I agree they sound more emo I think it’s just the emotional vocals and melodies which can be traced to other bands like Hawthorne heights and taking back Sunday just not as emo
" It's like a tradition", the lead singer said this on one of the live shows I watched via internet, and Once he said that I instantly understood what they were truly about. They truly are a throwback band. And i Believe they don't play to satisfy the current time, they play what truly feels right to them and it just happens to be the music they grew up to.
SOOOO glad you mentioned Hum. The first song I heard by Title Fight was Head In The Ceiling Fan and I immediately thought of Hum which is another one of my favorite bands. Not many people seem to mention them alongside Title Fight though. Mostly they just say Jawbreaker, Knapsack or Seaweed but I have always thought they sounded like Hum which is wonderful.
You could easily make the argument that Title Fight is one of the best Rock/Alternative bands of the 2010s. In hindsight they don't get enough recognition.
all of title fights albums are an 8/10 or more . IMO they don't even have a bad song to their name which I can't say for any other band or artist I've ever listened too.
I honestly felt Shed was better in comparison to Floral Green. Shed had a very positive energy with some emotional tracks such as "Safe In Your Skin" and "Crescent Shaped Depression" and with also a lot of very melodic riffs with some fast tempos. Not to say Floral Green is a bad album. I understand that they really want to expand their musical capabilities.
how can you simultaneously request a killers review and then request that i review more "real punk music"? just breakin' balls. yeah, i'm not into the avetts. i've liked a few songs from them, but i find them a bit uninteresting. i haven't reviewed the new killers cuz there are albums i'd rather review. you know?
Great review, can't believe I'm getting into this band so late. I've been way too disconnected with my local music scene. And here I thought the only reason to go into wilkesbarre was to spend a Saturday loitering at a gas station. Never knew I was missing a great band was being born. That spring ep's got me all tingly.
I used to say last thing you forget was their best album when Shed was out. But then Shed grew on me as i kept listening to it and attached personal memories to songs. The same happened when floral green came out; I said shed was the best, but yet again I have listened to Floral Green many times and it has grown on me with new memories. This is what title fights "thing" is. They grow on you over time and help you look back at a time of your life. Album, by album.
Though it is a fair review, the most important aspect of any album should always be "Did I enjoy listening to this album?" If the answer is "yes" then it's a good album for you, and your opinion is the only one that matters when it comes to something subjective like music.
I finally have the time to actually watch multiple reviews of yours other than completely biased facebook shares and you seem to be the most educated and knowledgeable source as far as getting very valid and unbiased opinions (but not necessarily at the same time) on some of my favorite releases. I seriously find myself really respecting and often agreeing on certain aspects that I never really saw initially when I listen to certain releases. I haven't stumbled upon a personal bio of yourself though on here and I'm honestly curious to know your musical and educational background. Please consider sharing if you haven't done so. Also, you should share like a top 10 band or something along those lines, just to see what your influences or background comes from musically, you know. Thanks for reading if you see this! He played the bass guitar for a band in college. He said that since the bass is in a lot of songs less noticeable than the drums or lead guitar, he was forced to really listen to songs and hear every detail.
Anthony, you should listen to their first LP. People in the punk/hardcore scene already had a definition of who Title fight was. They played fast melodic hardcore (like Lifetime) with Jawbreaker-ish riffs. It was their sound and a lot of bands ripped them off; these bands eventually became known as "Title Fight bands." This new record changed directions for them, so they're kind of in a transition phase.
One thing that kind of bothers me is how he's made a video that dismisses the importance if originality, but he constantly gets on bands for not being completely unique
I think Title Fight's unique factor is what was your personal issue with the album. They pay tribute to the 90s as opposed to playing modern generic styles like many of their peers in their respective scene. I think it is their love for the past that really sets them apart from any other band in the same community as them.
Floral Green is a Strong 8. I'm a little late to the party and quite a bit disappointed by the review score. Now I have to check out the review for Hyperview. (10/10) if anyone was wondering.
Please make sure you review Basement - colourmeinkindness when it comes out! :) Great review by the way, I loved this record but agree with your points
I remember listening to this band once and liking it very much, but I lost sight of them after that. Now from what I've heard from this album and the influences you quote, this in absolute MUST for me. I'm really glad that 90's emo is finally making a comeback.
I give this album a 8.5-9. Though you did hit the nail on the head about being heavily influenced by 90s-early 2ks alternative, I feel like it was still a solid original record. I can distinctively hear Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr., but I think that that's the angsty drive that keeps this band pumping out awesome tunes. Sweet channel btw.
Honestly, I thought this was one of my favourite albums of 2012. Title Fight are a band that I hold close to my heart and honestly, I feel that their first full length, Shed, is a better album. I'm not sure if you've heard of them, but there is a band called Basement. Their album Colourmeinkindness is great. It'd be great to hear your thoughts on that LP.
As soon as you started trying to point out negative things about Title Fight I kinda lost interest. Title Fight is fucking top notch dude, I have nothing bad to say about them and I don't understand how anyone could. But hey, it's all opinion, right?

Thanks Anthony! Cool to hear your opinions on this :-D I'd personally give this closer to a strong 7. I think I have a lot of the same problems with it that you had, i've been listening to Title Fight for a while now and this album just seemed off to me for some reason.
