My ex-military Dad always taught us that if we were forced to engage, you’d better mean it. He always taught us girls to go for the throat if escape is not an option. Eyes, groin, throat, whatever we have to do. And NEVER let someone get you in a car, no matter what. Better to take your chances and fight

I work in an engineering firm where we all carry pens. I'll have to drop it in the suggestion box that they spring for one of these for all hands. A short story: When I was a machinist in Philadelphia back around 1980, the subway station I had to wait at to get home was a dark, dirty, and creepy place. Whenever I worked late and had to wait at that station below street level, it would be somewhat deserted. So I began carrying my hardhat and my huge adjustable wrench in a shoulder bag home with me. If anyone ever attacked me, I was prepared to clobber them with my wrench. One well placed blow with that wrench would have done some serious damage. In Philadelphia, there are no laws against carrying a huge wrench.

I don't see enough self defense training videos where the instructor tells you to strike people in the throat. Whether you use your fists, hand chop or a weapon, it is the best area of the body to deescalate an attack quickly. Thanks for being one of those instructors who does teach it.

Excellent point. I've seen a 19th century self-defense manual recommend, apart from going for the eyes, the alternative tactic of grabbing a finger of the assailant in your fist and completely bending it back, breaking it. (They recommended this finger thing especially for women, saying something like that even the weakest woman is still strong enough to break a man's finger.) What are your thoughts on this tactic?

Good, I’ve had one for years. I would only add that one must not rely completely on a weapon because losing control of it could cause you to panic. Otherwise stated: if you can’t fight without a weapon, then chances are you can’t fight with one. A weapon is an adjunct or enhancement to fighting skills, not a replacement for them.

I've been places where even a tactical pen was prohibited as an "offensive weapon" and I had to improvise. I find that practicing with tools such as the tactical pen aids me when I have to improvise.
I was on the mess deck of a US warship on a WESTPAC cruise forty years (and some change) in the past when a sailor began escalation to attack. I was on mess duty and filling pepper shakers when he slid his feet across the deck and came up in a boxing pose, throwing a left jab--I slapped the bottom of the pepper shaker as I feinted to my left, ejecting the cap and about half the black pepper in the shaker. He gasped as the cap hit him in the forehead, inhaling pepper in nose and mouth. I had already slipped to the right and circled to his rear, out of reach, pepper shaker shifted so that I could drive it into the base of his skull--the fight was over. A quick scan showed me that my brother Marine had my six and nobody was going to help out the combative sailor.
I pointed at two sailors, "You and you, take him to the head and wash his face out. Don't let him rub the pepper in. "
I learned later that the sailor was the boxing champion and I had been severely out-classed. Field expedient pepper weapon with a back-up of the pepper shaker as an impact weapon (an unnecessary back-up, fortunately) along with a buddy and decisively brutal but controlled action saved me from a savage beating. That sailor would have cleaned my clock without breathing hard--except that he inhaled too much pepper to breathe at all.

Thats the perfect example of ALWAYS being prepared. Generally speaking people are unpredictable and if a guy happens to snap for any given reason and you're not prepared, it could cost you your life or the life of a loved one. Being adaptable is a key to staying prepared. Expect the unexpected.

** Once in a restaurant an older world war 2 veteran was enjoying his coffee and donut when a young man asked for change and decided he was going to take it the older man threw pepper in his face and flew from the chair with a mighty nice right hand jab and later speaking to him he grinned and said he had learned that trick.

I have one Original and now I just placed a new order for the Titanium Tactical Pen as well. I got two of those with the original thrown in as a bonus. I’m very satisfied with my Original Tactical Pen and I will be putting it to good use as a Merchant Mariner as we do travel a lot. I also love my SEAL Torch Flashlight and my Stiletto Knife as well. All recommended products to anyone that wants quality tools. I will be doing more business with you in the near future Jason! I’ll be gifting Tactical Pens to my mom, sister, and girlfriend soon. I travelled (mostly alone), worked and lived in various countries since the mid 90s and was never armed. Not even with a pen. US, Europe, Russia, Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Balkans, India, Iran, Maghreb, Egypt etc.
What's important is a trouble detector, awareness of your surroundings, being prepared to pull yourself out of a situation and the right use of your words and body language. In the few tricky moments, neither a tactical pen, a knife or a gun would have helped.
But I understand that carrying it with you may make you feel safer. I felt safe without.

I told him no, and he suddenly accused me of smoking an illegal cigar and came at me. I drew my tactical pen and warned him to stay back and although he continued to rattle off crazy nonsense, he saw the pen and broke off the assault. As he walked away, I called the police and gave them his description and told them what had happened. They NEVER showed up to talk to me!

He is correct about suggesting two quick jabs. You have to make immediate decision if you wish to just disable your attacker or more.
It would only take two more jabs through the sides of the neck to kill him. And you could do it in less than two seconds more.
This is a lethal weapon, depending on how you use it.

This is most likely one of the best things I picked up from one of your books. In the 2 years I was back in the US for COVID I had one everyday at work, as it was a gun free area that hired anyone that blew in the door like tumble weed. I also, due to my short time I'd be back in the US rode a bike the 2.5k to and from work. St Charles, Missouri isn't as bad in crime as St Louis, but there were undeveloped areas and homeless I would have to ride through in the evening. Getting back to Vietnam a few months ago I brought it with me and have it clipped to my bag, when I teach, or in my pocket when out supplementing my keys attached to a small D ring I can swing at people in defense. No one even bats an eye at it, and I got through airport security in the US and Qatar with border security for Vietnam and Cambodia without issues.

The best undercover agents look ordinary, appear to be an integral part of the scenery. Unfortunately, this sometimes makes predators mistake them for prey. It's a mistake in the victim selection process. CIA officers can neither confirm nor deny that they're far more likely to be attacked by ordinary criminals than by hostile government agents, but FBI agents report being attacked by street criminals who identified the agent as a businessman and tried to rob the agent--or worse. In weapon-prohibited environments, guns and knives and even "defensive tools" such as the TASER or OC spray may be prohibited.
Your story about getting out of that Subway shop without being challenged is a great example of having confidence to acknowledge predators in the area and then go about your business without challenging them, without threatening them, without insulting them. Just a little doubt is all it takes--"why isn't that victim acting like a victim?"
My favorite "spy fiction" was Donald Hamilton's Matt Helm series. Helm used weapons if practical, improvised weapons if possible, and didn't rely on bare hands unless forced to. In the novels Helm had some tense moments when he was sized up (and on more than one occasion attacked) by ordinary street criminals. In the fictional stories, leaving dead bodies behind would have compromised the mission. The tactical pen can be used as lethal force or, with training, can temporarily disable.
I used a Mini Maglite to reinforce a pressure point hold on a teen who was bigger than me as he was egging on his cohort to jump me. I was working as a security guard in a big city shopping center and was alone in the parking lot. I was able to escort him from the place while his friends jeered at him and I thanked him for being my job security, but then requested that he stay away for a few weeks and never try getting his friends to beat me up again. Nobody noticed the little light--I had a larger MagLite on my belt because I was working at night. Some people mistake being polite for being helpless. A tactical pen would have been useful in that situation for the same purpose using the same technique--gaining compliance without putting someone in the hospital. Bare hands might have worked--using an instrument to reinforce a pressure point hold (one-handed, I needed to be able to react if the pressure point failed) did work and nobody was injured.

Jason, how about a video on what I have named W.O.O.’s or weapons of opportunity? There are literally thousands of weapons out there (when needed) that people never realize are there. Rolling up a newspaper or magazine until it’s like a stick. Or just walking through the store and glancing around for what could become a weapon should the need arise. These potential weapons are EVERYWHERE and people should take notice of them. My Krav Maga training has been a real eye opener for me. I’ve learned to look at people, places and things much differently.
Perhaps this might make a good video for people who don’t carry any type of weapon.
    Thanks for the great videos.👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍

    Hi jason.
Greetings from the UK! I always carry self defense criminal pepper spray identifier and a defence torch which emits 10,000 lumens of blinding light up to a distance of 1000 meters. This came in handy a few months back in my small seaside town. Walking home from work one night a car drove past me blasting it's horn, i turned in case it was someone i knew.
The car then turned round and stopped next to me with 3 male individuals looking for trouble. I turned the torch on them and they couldn't barely move, like blinded rabbits!! Haha!! As i walked away i kept the torch beaming through the cars windshield until i was out of sight. Game over. I didn't need the pepper spray.
I'm cetain this prevented me from confrontation. My torch also has the 'jagged' edge to smash windows or do serious damage to a criminals face.
I enjoy your video's and are very educating in all aspects of self defense. It's a shame though that we need to go out tooled up. Stay safe and all the best.

Thank you for the tips for using these pens. One thing I noticed though, is the pen you are showing on an airplane and at the beach (starting around the 6:23 point in the video) is not the same pen you have in your hand throughout the video. The other pen is much more rounded off, and you would not have to hide a sharp end because it doesn't have one.

I’ve worked overseas a couple of times for long durations. I’ve flown through international airports in France, Germany, Turkey, Egypt, Nigeria, and have never had my tactical pen confiscated. I like the fact that it contained a hidden handcuff key. I’ve never needed it, but at least I had it. Security has never even paid attention to it. I also had the ball point exposed as I went through various security but same as you, it went through security in my laptop bag and then into my pocket once I board the plane.

TSA will confiscate it if you take it through screening and they find it. It is on their banned list. What I always have in my carry on: fat Sharpie pen, zip ties and duct tape. The Sharpie isn't as hard as the tac pen, but it does the job almost a well.

Today, as I was going through security at a small airport in Oregon, a TSA official confiscated my tactical pen. The officer recognized it as a tactical pen and said they are used as weapons in the martial arts. Yes, I took the cap off, turned it around, and placed the pen in my carry-on bag, as you suggested.

I got my tactical pen in the mail from spy briefing and have been enjoying it all week.
    I even slept with it.
I can vouch this pen is awesome!
Somehow it’s both subtle and yet it makes a presents at the same time.
I tested it gently on myself and it still hurts.
I take it with me daily with my wallet, keys, and cell phone.
    It’s an awesome pen!

Couldn’t help but notice that there was a few Atomic Bear pens. I have the defender and I love it. It’s one of my EDC pens. Thinking of getting the stealth pen pro that just came out and possibly yours in the future too. Downside to the defender I have it the cap can’t cover the glass breaker so it wouldn’t be allowed on carry on bags in an airport.

I like your videos. Being from the UK,carrying a gun or a knife is out of the question and there are very good reasons for that, but that's a discussion for another day.
I will look into this tactical pen as I have always found a good, metallic Parker pen to to be capable of doing much of the same. Also, being an ex smoker, my vapouriser is essentially a heavy rod of steel. One good thud from either end and you are not getting back up for a long time.
By the way, loved the nut on a cord. Simple and very effective.

What I like about the tactical pen is that it easily concealed until you are ready to use it at they are really cheap to discard if you really mess somebody up. Not me, I don't know how he hurt himself. That's too bad.

the first I heard of a self-defense pen, was using a Cross pen, as many police officers carry a Cross pen, this was in the early 1980s.

A steel Parker is just as good and no one, including jobsworth police departments, can accuse you of carrying an offensive weapon as would be the case in many countries if you got frisked.

Great training. Thanks for taking time to teach.
Seems long, long ago, a "trainer " of your ilk taught my cadre: A pen is a pen & tactical is just a word that neophytes use. Your brain, once enlightened, makes a pen, ,
....or the change in your pocket ....or your shoelace.....hell even gravity.....Y'know what i say.
    Teach 'em Jason!
In other words - Keep up the good work!
