  • The M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pros are starting to get to your hands and you might be wondering what is the best and fastest external SSD. In this review and tutorial I go through some synthetic benchmarks as well as large file transfers, exporting a 4K video timeline and running apps and software off of the external SSD.
    Is the fastest always better and is a Thunderbolt 3 or USB4 enclosure the way to go with these NVMe SSDs, or will you be fine with a USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 enclosure?

    Hello Kevin! I am here today to express my frustration! The Orico M2PV-C3 10Gbps NVMe M.2 SSD Enclosure "might be" a POS? But I am working with Amazon and Orico to exchange the one I bought in July... That being said? I have test results from the ACASIS TBU405 40Gbps NVMe M.2 SSD Enclosure!
    MacBook Pro 14 Inch [10c/14c/16GB/512GB] & Mac mini M1 Base Model w/512GB
    1st NVMe M.2 SSD: WD Blue SN570 2TB ($170 Amazon)
    Black Magic Speed Test 3GB Write 2700MB/s Read 2775MB/s
    AmorphousDiskMark 5 times 4GiB: 1 Read 3230MB/s Write 2806MB/s 2 Read 2619MB/s Write 2433MB/s 3 Read 1122MB/s Write 181MB/s 4 Read 47MB/s Write 27MB/s
    2nd: NVMe M.2 SSD: T-Force TM8FP9002T 2TB ($150 Amazon)
    Black Magic Speed Test 3GB Read 1770MB/s Write 1470MB/s
    AmorphousDiskMark 5 times 4GiB: 1 Read 2953MB/s Write 1351MB/s 2 Read 2475MB/s Write 1202MB/s 3 Read 954MB/s Write 216MB/s 4 Read 46MB/s Write 32MB/s
    If Orico is willing to refund my money, when I test the exchanged enclosure? I will buy the ACASIS 10-in-1 Hub and put the T-Force TM8FP9002T 2TB in there and hang it off the Mini!
    ACASIS TBU405 40Gbps NVMe M.2 SSD Enclosure is a sure bet, People!!! WD Blue SN570 2TB is generation 3 but it does perform! 20GB file transfer in/out takes about 5 seconds! The enclosure is warm and I did purchase extra thermal pads just to make sure there's contact with the door. It will be a few weeks before I can give results from a 4K timeline using footage from iPhone 13 Pro (filmic Pro app).
    My next big purchase? A TERRAMASTER F2-210 2-Bay NAS for archiving purposes. I can buy another 4-bay at a later date! Plus, I will be able to clear out the 8TB Seagate External Desktop Drive and make that a backup for the NAS!

Running 16" M1 Max, but I also still use my 2010 17" with internal NVMe and 16 GB for certain things-I do have a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 Apple adapter just to do transfers of old and archived material(not concerned about speed there)
    Acasis direct from their store(not sure where it's shipping from-
    Fledging Shell Thunder-company based in the US(Alabama, and I like supporting US based companies. Shell Thunder supports up to 4TB which seems to be an advantage)

What I would love is something that you can swap up M.2 drives like the Orico Dual drive. This would allow me to work on multiple projects and just swap out the drives. Would love to see you test a dual bay drive. Thanks for doing this. When my MBP arrives, I'll be doing some testing on my own.

    Hey Kevin, thanks for making the SSD series. I really appreciate all the thorough info.
    One quick question, have you noticed any timeline performance issues when working with the SanDisk Extreme / T7 or T5 in comparison to internal SSD? (dropped frames, stabilization, denoise, plugins, scrubbing through the timeline, etc). I don't really care about the export times if the difference is not that high. I am more concerned about the editing experience. I currently edit my videos with a 2018 mac pro and a T5, I have to encode the footage to prores 422 and when I start adding effects is a pain in the ass. So I decided to buy a mac book pro m1 max, I am waiting for it. Do you think I can keep using my T5 to edit 500GB projects of multiple codecs, XF-AVC, Long GOP, and h.264. I was thinking of buying a T7 and having both. Let me know your thoughts, thanks in advance man.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад

      So the T5 seems to have a slower Read/Write on these M1s…sometimes landing at around 300-350MB/s, which working through the timeline with effects can occasionally be an issue. I’ve only noticed it on a very rare occasion, however with a drive that’s 1000+ MB/s I do not notice it when adding effects and scrubbing through or adding multiple clips.
      So even though Final Cut (as an example) may not be reading/writing at that higher speed consistently, there are times where if you’re stabilizing or denoising you’ll get a bump in those R/W speeds for a few seconds, which if the bottleneck is the drive, then that’s where you’ll see that beachball.
      But even having enough space to work with my projects on the internal, I still use external SSDs and haven’t had an issue, however I am using the T5 less and less, and have moved those speeds up to a point where the bottleneck would be the CPU or GPU…which I also haven’t hit yet either 😉

      I think the T7 will be a great choice. I typically like the DIY enclosures because of the upgradeable features, but honestly, the T7 should serve you for a while. I think it also comes down to price. Whether you can get the T7 or a SanDisk for the same price or less. They’re both great.

    Hey Kevin,
    Precise and comprehensive info on the SSDs, thanks for this, SUBSCRIBED!
    I had few questions regarding MBP 16" M1 Pro's port(s) with the respect to USB C 3.2 gen 2 data transfers,
    Recently I purchased Samsung T7,
    When I tested it on intel based macs the speeds were close to ~900 - 950 Mb/s but on 2021 M1 Pro's it was ~700 - 750 Mb/s, with sustained writes of ~512Mb/s!! I was totally shocked to see these results! Even with the previous gen M1 macs, the speeds were better (on M1 with older gen ports)
    The 2021 M1 Pro's have Thunderbolt4, USB4, so I thought I should get better speeds but apparently USB4 is not backward compatible with USB 3.2 gen 2? but in the system info of M1 Pro on Monterey 12.2 it shows USB 3.1 bus? AppleT6000USBXHCI
    So I'm really confused right now, is the issue related to Samsung's internal bus on T7 or something wrong with the M1 Pro's port(s)?
    Or is it that Monterey needs some sort of firmware patch for the ports to be compatible for/with USB 3.2 gen 2?
    I would really appreciate your help on this,
    Thanks

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! So yes, there’s been a lot of testing on these (and previous M1) Thunderbolt ports.
      So the T7 would have an advertised read/write of about 1,000MBs, which you’ll see this closer to that on those Intel based machines, but the underpowered chip along with the communication protocol isn’t really giving us the throughput on these M1s.
      The Pro and Max should be better than the M1 as those chips are at a higher watt, however we’re also relying on a retimer in these machines, which I’ve mentioned in other videos, but this basically “equalizes” and cleans up that signal.
      Now as far as real world, unless I’m dealing with massive file transfers, I haven’t really had issues in real world use because the programs I’m using aren’t even writing that quickly.
      But, to answer the question, we are dealing with some communication protocol issues here, and this has something we’ve been following for a while on these M1s.
      Seems that the DIY built enclosures are performing better than the pre-built as long as it’s a compatible combo of enclosure and SSD.
      The unfortunate thing here is that most wouldn’t even know there’s an issue…I say most.
      However for those of us that are investigating further, we’re obviously finding these discrepancies.
      TB4/USB4 being a communication protocol somehow doesn’t seem to be translating the same across all hardware. I’ve also been testing this in a PC counterpart to find the results being different than that of the Mac.

    • @_shv
      @_shv 2 года назад

      @@KevinRossRN Thanks for the prompt reply and thankyou so much for clearing up most of my doubts!
      I was about to return my Samsung T7 but as you mentioned earlier regarding the discrepancies in terms of different hardware compatibility, seems like this will take some time to get resolved or at least for most of us to get a clearer picture of what's actually going on. So for now, I'll keep them(T7) and continue it as my daily drive.
      On the bright side though, I'm glad that at least TB3 and TB4 are working well with the M1s and M1 Pros, hopefully we'll see big companies releasing external SSDs with TB4 compatibility as standard, by the end of 2022 (fingers crossed)
      P.S. I found/discovered your channel just few hours ago and I'm so glad that I did, will continue to watch your content and support your channel from now on.

    Hi Kevin, love how much effort and thought that goes into these deep dives. Apologies if you have answered this question before. I’m trying to get a MPA with 16gb ram and save a bit of money on the storage at 256gb and get one of these options. I do plan on doing heavy video editing on Premiere and will consistently have large file transfers. Wondering which option you would recommend for that situation, and if overheating should be a concern. Or if I should just get more internal storage? Thanks so much in advance!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад +1

      I always suggest to get as much storage as you can afford, but understand that it might not be in the budget.
      I will say that the internal storage is extremely efficient, and a “bargain” when compared to anything else.
      However, for video editing, and I did do a video on this not that long ago, you’ll likely not notice a difference because these programs will only read and write to the drive at the speed that your CPU/GPU can handle the work.
      I’d definitely recommend 16GBs for sure, and Premiere still has some improvements to work on, but Adobe is definitely trying to remedy these. It’s just taking longer than many had hoped.
      Anyway, as far as the the thermal, you may raise the internal temp by a degree or two because of the heat from the Thunderbolt port, but nothing to the point you’d notice.
      Most of the heat will likely be on the chip, specifically the GPU.
      But even though I always get at least 1TB of internal storage, I still find myself using these externals all the time for editing.

      Based on my testing with 8K Helium footage the read speeds are anywhere from 75-125MB/s depending on the timeline and a lot of that is really happening through the internal even though the footage is on the external.

      I’d at least get the version that’s 3.1 Gen2 (about 1,000MBs) to give you some headroom, but you’ll be good. I’ve rarely worked off the internal drive for editing, even with complex timelines.
      I have a video on here somewhere where I talked about editing on a spinning HDD. Not ideal for loading, but once that thing is spinning up, it’s moving.
      I tested that with a7siii footage.
      RAM swap is going to happen on the internal and it’s likely you’re not even moving fast enough with that footage that the cache is going to be fine as well.

      I’ve used several Gen 4 SSDs in the Acasis enclosures. The Samsung 980 Pro seems to work the best as far as read and write speeds, but honestly those speeds are only utilized in a very niche case.
      I’d say to avoid the WD 770, but the Gen 4 WD 750 is what I’d invest in as long as it’s the same price or cheaper. There aren’t really any enclosures that are able to take advantage of the full read and write of Gen 4, but the 750 SE is only rated at 3600MB/s, so you should be able to get fairly close to that, but as mentioned in my other videos, the write speeds are lower on the M1.

    I'm trying to decide if I should go for a Sandisk/Corsair/Samsung T7 SSD Gen2 disks or buy a new enclosure (Gen2 or TB3/4) + a new 2TB nvme. At this moment the option for USB-C Gen2 enclosure + nvme (3000/3600Mbs) can be 30$ more expensive than the others (need to wait for another promo). But maybe in a few months, I wonder If I would really need the TB3/TB4 speeds for my video and photography editing or if the USB-C Gen2 800MB writes would be enough... Do you think Is better to grab the nvme + enclosure? TB vs USB-C? Or just stick with a Sandisk or Samsung t7 ...?
    To give more context:
    I just bought the new Macbook 14" M1 Pro and I was expecting to use my actual External SSD enclosure gen2 that I used for 2 years in a Windows laptop. Sadly I was and I'm still having problems with it. At first I couldn't even connect to the laptop, he would turn on but I could only see it under the System Report with a speed of 10Gbs. But after updating to Monterey 12.0.1, finally the computer recognize the disk, but only at 5Gbs speed. But at least I can use it. :P

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! So again, it’ll come down to the program as far as read and write, so I would say that the USB-C Gen2 enclosure can really save money in the long run because it allows you to upgrade the SSD or the enclosure when you’re ready.
      However I still stand behind the SanDisk Extreme and I use it with the heaviest tasks and no issues.
      The deals are definitely hot right now on SSDs and even if they’re up right now, just wait five minutes and they’ll be back down.
      So you already have an enclosure but you’re only getting about 5Gbps right now?

      Yes, I really like the idea in the long run to just update the Nvme or a thunderbolt enclosure. But I guess you're reaching the maximum/normal speeds of Gen2 with Sandisk Extreme Pro and the Sabrent enclosure, right?
      Yes, I've been using for the last 2 years an enclosure under a Windows laptop. The benchmarks were always around 800'sMB read/write. But from what I've been reading, the JMS583 chipset isn't working very well with Macbook M1's. Like I said before, only after I updated to Monterey 12.0.1, I've been able to actually use it.
      I was doing some more tests, and sometimes he recognizes as a 10Gpbs connection and other times as 5Gpbs. And the write/read speeds are never more than 500's MB's as 10Gpbs or 300/400MBs as 5Gpbs. Really weird...
      If I can get the normal 800MBs of Gen2, I believe I will be fine. Under that and considering the way my current external SSD is working vs the internal disk, I see a real difference when I'm scrubbing or doing fast forward the clips under DaVinci Resolve.

      So with the M1’s I’ve noticed that the Gen2 enclosures (usually) perform slightly better than the pre-builds where I was getting closer to 800MB/s with the enclosure and the prebuilt was around mid 600 up to 700MB/s give or take.
      There was an individual here that ended up getting the Acasis enclosure and the Samsung 980Pro: amzn.to/3lyrhKz (this one)
      And he was saying he got somewhere around 2700 both read and write…although that was of course in that Thunderbolt enclosure.
      I really like the Sabrent USB-C Gen 2 as it seems to work well on both M1 and the M1 Max.
      I’d at least try to stay in the 1000MB/s read/write on the drive because as you know it’ll be slower on that M1. If you get a decent NVMe you can always use that elsewhere down the road. I’m always finding uses for these things.

    I just jumped into external NVMe SSDs and enclosures, and (helped along by videos like yours and by Black Friday prices) settled on a 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus and an Acasis USB4/Thunderbolt enclosure (TBU405). I'm running a Mac Mini M1 (2020) 16GB system, on Monterray. I fully expected to see excellent read speeds and slower write speeds. To my surprise, my write speeds actually slightly exceeded my read speeds. (2822 write, 2728 read, per BM Speed Test). Is this a matter of improvements in the SSD or the enclosure, do you think? According to their website, the enclosure uses a Titan Ridge TB-3 chipset. I am a power user for video editing but not a gamer or system builder. Any idea why I am getting vastly improved write speeds vs. what reviewers have been reporting on similar hardware?

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  Год назад

      Well it’s possible there’s been a firmware update on the SSD, however, have you tried a synthetic bench test with another app?
      We have seen slight improvements with these speeds with certain updates, however this also comes down to the communication protocol on these M1s.

      Unless you’re running them in a RAID configuration, which few people are, then this is what we have. Not to mention that some of that 40Gbps throughput is going to be reserved for other peripherals that could be allocated to that Bus.

      Honestly as far as storage, I’d consider a NAS or at least something that has a spinning HDD since it’s much cheaper, although these NVMe SSDs can be a storage solution, it’s just that per TB they start getting pricey.
      As far as working off of them though it’ll still be heavily impacted by the program’s ability to read and write.
      I edited a video yesterday on the internal drive for the first time in quite awhile and there wasn’t really any performance difference between that and the external NVMe SSDs I use.
      However, I will say that these internal SSDs are actually a “bargain” when it comes to the upgrade.
      Not to go against an external SSD because I have quite a few, but for the price of the upgrade on internal storage, you’re paying close to that with an external drive.
      But again, for your needs, I would say the majority of us (or at least quite a few) edit on an external SSD without issues.

      It's a great SSD for the price.
      However the DIY enclosures in this video are also some of my favorites because it allows you to at least have some choice over the specific SSD that you use in these enclosures, however they can often be more expensive as an upfront investment.
      But one of the things I like is that let's say something happens to the enclosure, for whatever reason, well, this is where you're able to salvage the SSD inside of it, which is definitely the most important part.

From what I've seen from online reports, 1TB is fine for write speeds. At least with the Intel Macs (and I don't know about with OS12 on the Intel Macs).

      Gen 4 PCIe SSDs are usually backward compatible to Gen 3 protocol and speeds, but they’re not all as efficient with that communication protocol. The controller on the chip can also influence this.
      In these situations the Gen 3 is often times (mostly) going to perform as well or better than the Gen 4, it’s just that you can often get Gen 4 SSDs for the same price or cheaper, and it may be a better long term investment, especially if you decide to use that SSD in something that can take advantage of that Gen 4 protocol.

    Thanks for the review! I have an M1Max on order. In the meantime, based on your review, I bought a Fledging Shell Thunder, and put a 2TB SN750 in it. I also bought their active TB cable. On my PC laptop with TB3 I’m only getting around 700 writes and 1700 reads. Any thoughts as to why? Could it be the 2TB NVMe vs the 1TB you used?

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад

      First, congrats on the M1 Max coming in.
      As far as the 2TB you’ll see about 100MB/s difference, which is advertised. As far as on the PC you should be able to get that full throughput, but can’t confirm without knowing as to whether it’s a dedicated bus or shared among the other I/O.
      I also haven’t tested their active cable, and I do have some from Cable Matters, but at such a short distance I haven’t felt the need. On your PC can you confirm you’re running the latest firmware on that SN750?

    • @madrivermediaeddooley5084
      @madrivermediaeddooley5084 2 года назад

      Thanks. Yes, I have the Western Digital app on the laptop that confirmed it’s the latest firmware. Not sure about the shared IO comment, I’ll look into that. As I wrote, the write speed especially is way too slow. I’ve emailed Fledging to see if they have anything to say. Thanks again.

      An update: My new Macbook Pro Max arrived, I plugged in the Shell Thunder and with the 2TB WD SN750 I got approx. 1,100 writes and 2,500 reads, higher than the 700 writes than I got on my PC laptop, but not great. I took a 1TB WD SN750 out of my Mac Pro and put it in the Shell Thunder enclosure, and got 2,500+ writes and reads. That’s good news, and points to either the firmware or something else with the 2TB version of the SN750. I’ve just ordered the Acasis enclosure for the 2TB blade, hopefully I’ll get good writes in that.

      PS, getting over 6,000 writes and reads on the MBP internal NVMe! I wish I had had seen your review before purchasing, I would have gone for the 2 or 4TB internal NVMe instead of the 1TB. With the cost of the blade and enclosure it wouldn’t have been a big difference to upgrade the internal drive.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад +2

      Exactly. The pricing on these internals are in many cases a better deal than these external solutions.
      The more I look over and review comparisons with other machines, the more the “Apple Tax” doesn’t seem to hold the same weight that it used to.

    I made the mistake of buying a SanDisk Pro Extreme 4TB thinking I'd get the 2000 MB/S+ speeds and found out it's bottlenecked due to the interface in the enclosure and tops out at the numbers you show. If I took the drive out of the case and put it in a new enclosure like the one you used, would I get better speeds or is the the bottleneck in the drive itself?

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад

      So it’s basically the enclosure (the protocol), not the NVMe in there. However, I’m not certain about taking the SSD out of there. Sounds like a video idea might be brewing.
      That being said, as far as real world use, have you noticed any issues with those speeds when actually using it?

    • @VinceCollier
      @VinceCollier 2 года назад

      @@KevinRossRN It's obviously exponentially faster than the external Hard Drives I was using before but it's still getting less than half the advertised speed. I was thinking about just ordering a new NVME (4TB) and a fast enclosure and returning the SanDisk but I may not be able to do that. I don't want to pay a restocking fee and I think Amazon says they have a 15% restocking fee on these. I spent over $100 more on the latest iteration of the Extreme Pro that rates over 2000 MB/s according to the add, almost twice the speed of the previous version, but it practicality they get the same speed on M1 Macs due to the protocol of the enclosures. (3.1 2x2). I thought, if just putting the drive in a new enclosure would get it up to the advertised speeds, then I might just do that since the price of the NVME 4TB SSDs are about the same as what I paid for this drive anyway.

    • @KevinRossRN

    I just had a horrible and confusing experience using an ORICO M.2 Enclosure for NVMe SSD enclosure with a Sabrent Rocket Advanced 2TB NVMe SSD. It installed very easily. I was able to initialize it and tested the R/W speeds. I was getting 2000-2200 RW on a blackmagic speed test. I copied 4GB and it disconnected. I tried multiple cables and ports and it never came back. Replacements for each came and the same exact thing happened. I am stumped but I am thinking the Sabrent overheated and instead of throttling it just died. Still very confusing. Orico and Sabrent have horrible support and are only PC focused so there was no real solution. DIY NVMe is the Wild West right now.

      So do you already have the M1 Pro machine?
      Also, I love the SanDisk Extreme SSDs, and what I will say is that if you’re talking about spinning HDDs then these SSDs will perform better as far as working off of them.

      what I want Is best performance for buck. so if SN750 + enclosure > Sandisk ready ssd (which i'm a big fan of) then yes I will spend the extra $$. but if both are gonna perform around 1000mb/s then a sandisk would be less hassle! thoughts?

      Well the SanDisk is going to be an “easier” solution. You’ll get plenty of throughput on it. I will say that the DIY enclosures will give you a bit more on those speeds because you are working with a NVMe SSD that has a few more bells and whistles, but when it comes to real world I honestly don’t think you’ll notice in your case.
      For someone like myself where I’m constantly removing drives and updating, it saves money in the long run, and before I reviewed tech I’d just always choose my Samsung T5 for everything and never had an issue with it.

    0:54 There are several factual errors in those statements: USB Type-C ist a physical connector, not a protocol. Thunderbolt3 _can_ use Type-C connectors, while Thunderbolt4 is only specified for them, i.e. _must_ use Type-C. Also, there are still no SSD enclosures anywhere on the market supporting USB4. Some Chinese manufacturers (Acasis, Orico, Yottamaster*) claim to support "USB4.0", but they are essentially lying or, best best, misleading consumers (hint: there is no "USB4.0"/"USB 4.0" standard -- officially it's only USB4). All of those enclosures use the Intel JHL7440 Thunderbolt3-PCIe 3 and/or JMicron JMS583 USB3.2 gen 2-PCIe 3 bridges, and those do not support USB4 whatsoever, and neither Thunderbolt4. Hence, despite the manufacturers' claims of "40 Gbps speeds", these can only be achieved when connected to Thunderbolt3-capable ports, using the JHL7440 bridge chip. As such, a fully Thunderbolt3-capable cable with a USB Type-C connector on one end and a Mini DisplayPort connector on the other end should also work, running at a theoretical bandwidth of 40 Gbps.
