This is what I consider a professional review. Giving the viewer enough solid information so that they can make a purchase that best suits their workflow. Thank you, for the significant amount of time you spent on preparing/editing this video to provide quality content. BTW...audio is on point! Subbed!
Well I appreciate that. These videos do typically take quite a bit of research, filming and editing, but happy to make them as I know they often answer those buying questions. Glad to have you around here.🤙
I love that you actually showed the render R/W values. All the RUclips “experts” always skip over this and only compare benchmarks and large volume x-fer. Yeah its nice when you have 500GB to move that it goes twice as fast. But in practical use in your editing timeline performance and render speeds the drive speed is a negligible difference, and often isnt worth the price tag.
Yep. In this case it’s just a matter of paying extra for that upgradability, but otherwise the performance is pretty much aligned with pre-built solutions. In many use cases that is. Glad it was helpful.
Kevin... Nate here. Man I can't express how you've addressed my storage decision. You've presented options in multiple areas with real-time workflow and data. I never knew there was such a thing as an enclosure for an ssd... I do like the scan disk option but this dyi for me is major. Appreciate your time, effort, and thought in what you've done in this one. I'm a new subscriber. I'll view your channel to see if you have links to other media outlets.. Continue..
Well Nate, I appreciate you stopping over. I’m really glad I was able to help. It’s why I create the content, and do all of this testing. So I can help others make that buying decision. Not to mention that I’m curious myself, so I’m learning right there with you. 😉🤙
I just ordered the 16gb with 1tb, and I'm adding that fledging enclosure with the newest sabrent gen4 ssd's for a working drive and a physical raid for backups and long term/ slow storage some guy posted a fairly comprehensive set of test stats in the review section of the fledging product webpage where he compares variosmus drives and compares the speed to his m1 mac ssd. He claims this setup fully saturates the 20Gb/s T3 write channels. I really appreciate these videos for getting me started on my choice.
Congrats! And I’ll have to check out those tests. Appreciate you letting me know about it. Feel free to hop back over to let us know how it’s all going. 👊👍
Thanks for the video and going through all that data. It is really hard work. I think you may find that it will be easier to summarize your results if you just use tables to compare like things so that you and your viewers don’t have to remember anything. We don’t really need to see the benchmark tools running (once or twice in a video is fine just to establish what software you are using). This is important stuff to me so I will keep coming back for more. Merry Christmas!
Thanks! Glad it helped. I was going to put graphs in there, but after a solid two days of working on testing and filming...I admit I was exhausted and just needed to get this posted ASAP because I had so many people reaching out about it on another video I did about SSDs. Anyway, thanks so much for hanging. 👊
Thanks! I actually have some infographic plugins, and these look great as well. Appreciate you sending them over. I think I just needed to get the info out and really just get these videos posted. It was a grind with all this testing....Before the holidays, and just the other full time gig on top of this one. But I do like to add them in as I know it does help a few folks. 😉 I’ll give this platform a deeper look. 👍
So refreshing to come access someone who understands the issues being faced by creative professionals in the real world. This channel is truly priceless.
Just stumbled upon your channel. Nice information. You have a great voice, and your delivery is so much smother and relaxing than most other RUclipsrs. Good stuff. I’m subscribing.
Working in the Post business and now with working from home, your channel is rockin’. This topic is exactly what I need right now. So glad I came across it. Subscribed. 🇨🇦👍🏼
Great video...all of your "leg work" on this video...and why I subscribed. Others have also reported this same Thunderbolt performance issue on the M1s. Do you know if Apple has acknowledged the problem and indicated if they are working on a fix?
Thanks so much! As far as Apple acknowledging this, I believe they are aware. They have to be. I just spent a solid two days on just this video alone (and many more before I got this TB3 enclosure). I’m hoping we’ll get one of those Big Sur updates that’ll fix this, but it’ll also probably be buried in the info section as a “TB3 improvement” like it’s magic 😀 But seriously I’m really just hoping this has something to do with how Big Sur has to also function on these intel machines and it’s a kernel issue that can be patched. I’m sure there are a few folks out there testing harder than I am trying to figure this out. There’s definitely an Apple team that goes through these videos, the online forums and support communities looking for common issues. This would definitely be one of them 😉 If I get wind of a fix, I’ll definitely be posting it. Happy to have you around here. 👊
@@KevinRossRN Thanks...I just hope that the fix is a software fix and doesn't require a HW change. I just bought a new Macbook M1 system and I'm looking to do 4K60 video editing directly from the external drive (SanDisk Extreme 1TB)...From your video it looks like even with the existing performance limitations of M1's TB3 there should be enough throughput to accomplish my objective. Right?
Yes. You’re going to have plenty of bus throughput. Not sure which codec you’re working with, but this A7siii footage and the R5 footage I worked with is tough, and it had no problems. But agree, I hope it’s a software fix.
That Blackmagic speed test doesn't look that fast. When I run the Blackmagic test on my DIY 16TB external SSD, I'm getting 3913 Write and 4369 Read on my Intel Mac Mini. I just ordered the 13" M1 MBP and I'll definitely check it out and see if it's optimized or not. Also, I am using NVMe 3.0 Intel SSDs. Very interesting. I'm glad I stumbled upon your video!
Yeah, it has been interesting on these M1s as far as this throughput on these TB3 enclosures. The efficiency with many tasks is so good that I don’t really notice the real world performance difference with the read/write, but it will be interesting to see if there is a fix. I need to update to Big Sur 11.2, but I doubt there’s anything there that’ll improve this 🤷♂️
Ha! Well I almost think that this is what Apple intended... for us to test these machines in ways that didn’t exist in a lab. It’s certainly kept me busy while we’re all inside these days. I’ll have to figure out how to film outside when we can get back out again 😁 Appreciate you brother. Still inspired by the mood on that last video of yours 🔥
I use a WD Black P50 SSD on my M1 Air and use it to stream very large East West Composer Cloud orchestra samples into Logic Pro. Very good performance so far. Might be worth a mention as well.
Love the content my friend! Thank you for doing this. A DIY project is definitely in my future. I wanted to ask about your DAC on your desk that you have your headphones plugged into. Im looking at adding one to my set up and wanted to know which one you are using and your thoughts, unless that is in an upcoming video :) cheers!
Nice! I love the DIY as well, but I guess you know that. And yes, I do have that linked under the “what I use to film/edit” section. It’s a MOTU M2. A very rare find these days. Mine came with fairy dust in the box 😄 But seriously, it’s plug and play and works with the M1. The sound loops and software isn’t updated to M1 yet, but they’ve posted that they’re working on it. But as far as the hardware itself, it works great.
@@KevinRossRN I noticed your M2 and got so happy! I bought one as my first interface and I love it’s basically perfect (I’m a composer) also getting a Mac Mini M1 on late January, was really waiting for this video since I want to get into editing too
That’s awesome! I do love the M2. I’ve been eyeing it for awhile and was finally able to pick it up. I’ve been using the Zoom H6 for years for podcasting and my video work, and I was hesitant to pick up an interface, but I do really love having now and sorry I waited so long. I’m also happy that it was fairly easy to setup...well, I actually didn’t have to do anything but plug it in and it was recognized immediately without any drivers. Glad you popped over here to hang out for a bit 😀
@@KevinRossRN So relatable! My first “interface” actually was a Zoom H4 which I share with a friend (we split the bill lol), so having a personal dedicated interface now (soon with drivers for M1 and Big Sur) is just great! Now, this video just made me realize I’m still not sure what to buy, I also saw a review of a Sabrent SSD on enclosure, and now this options. Maybe will just have to wait until Apple says something about the performance issues. Well I was going to wait anyway since my order will take time and I’m out of cash for now, so this was just curiosity for future investments
No harm in doing a little research. I did look at the Sabrent enclosure first, but after heavy deliberation, I figured this one would serve the type of SSD I got and how I am using it, and having the small fan in it is nice. Funny thing that the fan kicks in on the enclosure more often than the mini. I’ve actually never heard the fan on the mini 😀 No shame in waiting as we’ll see more updates coming in the next couple of months. I was just glad to see MOTU was taking it upon themselves to keep updating their blog with news.
The Tech Doctor! Great video Brother. 👍 Apple needs to fix this external drive speed issue. It seems very sketchy, as if they software limit the speeds so they can get you to upgrade and use their highly priced SSD options.
Thanks brother. And yes, a very unusual finding indeed. I have yet to see anywhere as to Apple acknowledging this issue, but as I was telling someone else, watch a Big Sur update come along that just mentions something in the details section like, “Thunderbolt 3 speed improvements” or something vague like that. 🤷♂️
As usual, a great video. I have heard and personally found that there is no actual need to render prior to export if you can playback the timeline and effects pretty smoothly. If that is happening, when you export without doing a render first, the export time is essentially the same as if you would have rendered already. Give it a try on the M1.
Yep, I agree. I wanted to be able to address several workflows as I know everyone has their own process. I’ve worked with background render on and off. It’s a nice feature that can also get annoying if one little change is made and it wants to re-render the timeline 🙄 But yes, I do tend to go back to double check stabilization or any kind of optical flow just to make sure. On the M1, it just makes it so much easier to do these things. I’ve never had a machine this capable and I’ve had some fairly powerful PCs in the day. The future with this architecture (for both PC and Mac) is bright 😎 Appreciate you hanging out friend. Always thankful for the community here 👊
Awesome information. I've been curious about the benefits of getting an NVMe to set up as an external Thunderbolt drive. You've answered my questions quite thoroughly. Thanks!!
Thanks! Yeah, I know it’s a mixed feeling about the tape. I’ve already registered the serial number and have a photo saved. Honestly, with this enclosure it’s likely not a necessary since there’s a fan 🤷♂️
I am not even a techy guy, but this video was so beautifully shot and you speak to clearly (very relaxing voice) i ended up watching to the end and now subscribed! Also the video was on 4k like when i hit like :)
Hello, Kevin! My M1 Mac Mini finally arrived a couple of days and I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for all of your valuable content! :) Now I am going through these videos to choose the best external SSD within my budget. Cheers!
Dude, your channel ROCKS! Your videos are really, really helpful. Since I struggle severely with internal SSD space (and until 2h ago also with my external WD HDD 2TB - your other vid set me back into the safe zone of 200GB free space) and editing on a next-to-full-HDD via a USB 3.0 isn't fun I guess, I would follow your suggestion and get a SSD + shell and change it as soon as it dates out. Guess this is the most sustainable solution (ecologically and economically). Using a screwdriver shouldn't be too hard. Agree?
Ha! Maybe I could work up a tutorial on using a screwdriver 😉 And yes, these setups really aren’t that hard to put together and it really does give you more longevity for sure. I’m appreciating this setup more and more for sure. Glad it’s been helpful. Appreciate you dropping over here to hang.
Hey Kevin, awesome video and you've really helped me out.I've just restarted my RUclips channel and I'm currently editing on a 13' 2012 MacBook Pro. I've ordered the new 13' M1 which is arriving in 3 weeks (I CAN'T WAIT). I'm researching an external drive to edit from and this video has MASSIVELY helped. I'm going to go for the cheeper USB C SanDisk to cut my initial costs. And correct me if I'm wrong, I believe this will be sufficient to edit my RUclips videos from. Thanks again Kevin :)
Congrats on starting back up! And the M1. Hopefully your shipping date gets bumped up a bit like some others experienced. Yes, the Sandisk is going to be fine. It’s still very capable and affordable 😉
Thank you so much for sharing this info. I'm goning to get the gen3 and put this together. Could I ask, which monitoring app are you using for your M1 on the menu bar? I'm trying to look for one that works with M1 well. Many thanks, and great video. Subbed!
Hi Kevin, thank you for your very informative video(s). You've made me decided to buy this kind of external SSD. I have some issues understanding which enclosure I should buy. I want a 2TB SSD but for the enclosure from the amazon link, I have multiple choice, should I take the 0GB or the 2TB version ? If I choose the 2TB, is there actually storage capacity inside or it is just the shell ? Thanks in advance !
@@KevinRossRN Thanks for your help ! Well the 0GB costs 200€ (+ shipping) in France, and the 2TB SP SSD 350€, which would make a total of 550€ (+ shipping)... That's a lot ! Do you have maybe a cheaper alternative for a Thunderbolt3 enclosure that doesn't have over heating issues or compatibility with the SSD you recommand ?
It is quite an investment. These TB3 enclosures are definitely more expensive than the usb-c Gen 2 enclosure. Have you found any cheaper SSD (NVMe) chips other than the Silicon power? What about the Western Digital SN750? I have two of those. Also, would you be opposed to an all in one like the Samsung T5 or SanDisk extreme?
@@KevinRossRN The Western Digital SN750 is almost the same price here unfortunately. I already have a Samsung T7 (500GB) but it's already full, I even can't open the Library on Final Cut anymore. I decided to go with a Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q (Tunderbolt3) not fast as a chip but faster than a Samsung T7. A good compromise between the two alternatives for cheaper. (350€ - 2TB). Thanks again for your guidance, keep up the good work Kevin.
Appreciate you circling back around with what you landed on and I do think this should be capable. Feel free to pop back over to let us know how it’s working and if you’re getting any random disconnects or have issues, although I believe the latest updates to Big Sur should eliminated those issues.
Great production and lovely audio! Liked and subbed. Have you compared this to the Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q SSDs? Apparently the Sabrent is fastest with higher SLC cache? Thanks again and keep them videos coming!
I haven’t tested this one, but I’m interested because I’ve heard it’s been randomly disconnecting on people, which I’d love to check this myself. However, I am literally (right now) in the middle of testing another NVMe SSD in this same enclosure, and I also have a USB4 enclosure coming in by tomorrow that I’m going to be putting it up against, because on paper, it should be faster than anything out there right now...but this is on paper. I’m going to work it over good and I’ll be posting this video soon.
I just want to let you know that your video is super helpful and knowledgeable. I’m watching it on my tv and gotta grab a remote to navigate to a like button. Really appreciate your video, please keep making it. Stay well, sir.
Fledgling sells the enclosure with SSD's inside. The 2tb one adds $240 to the price, compared to the one you put in from Silicon Power, which is $320. I'm not super familiar with the tech specs and capabilities. Can you tell me if the one you can buy directly from them is as good as the SP one you installed?
So the Silicon Power is a Gen 4 chip, which is way more than the enclosure can handle. I’ll have to double check the SSD in the enclosure...hang tight on that, but I do think you’ll be just fine on what they offer.
@@KevinRossRN Thank you! I won't be doing video, but I'm finally getting around to running my audio off an external drive. And since I'm going to be using it for a lot of live performing, this drive could help minimize latency. Thanks for the great overview and content!
@@KevinRossRN I'm on a 2016 15" Macbook Pro, 2.9 GHz Quad core i7, 1tb internal SSD. Sounds like this external SSD might be faster than what's inside my MBP.
There are reviewers who have great information to share, but their personalities/presentation can be grating/annoying/unwatchable. You have a great personality for presenting...please don't change!
Loving this channel right now, testing what I don't have the money to test, so I can decide on a better set up. Weird my SSDs max speeds on ANY port is 380~ so theres so sort of bottle neck happening.
Yeah, with the testing that I’ve been doing I was a bit miffed a out these benchmarks, especially on the mid tier read and write. We’re still limited by what the program is writing at, but obviously a faster drive with higher throughput will help some, but the just hope we can get some kind of update that will open up that throughput on these TB3 controllers. There’s a slim chance that Apple is going to come right out and admit that this is an issue, so I think a low key “update” in the code may get buried in one of these Big Sur updates...I hope. The efficiency of the M1 though is still such a massive gain in productivity for many of us though.
@@KevinRossRN oh man I hope so, but again I’ve been flying through 6k braw footage with LUTs and not missing a frame even with bottlenecked SSD speeds, if they fix it, the power I’ll be able to yield...just might be too much for me haha
SUBBED AS WELL ! Im quite peaky on RUclips channels but your Mac perspective really took my attention , literally deserve much more subs ! good luck Kevin..
Awesome video man 👍 , noone literally noone tech review channels perform any such kind of test , you are gonna make it to 1 million very soon , mark my words but by that time you might not be reading and replying our comments 🤠
Well, I’m going to keep replying to as many as I can, for as long as I can. It’s not easy, but I know it means a lot to both me and the community here😉 Appreciate your time. 👊
Hey Kevin, extremely useful video thank you ! Could you please do a follow up on the new M1 Max to see if its worth upgrading the internals this time or if TB3 is fixed with the new chip ?
Yeah on my initial M1 Max video I did mention this and it seems the synthetic benchmarks are hinting to improved performance, but I am testing this next in that series of tests on this new machine.
Nice! That’s so rad that you popped over here to see that footage. I find it fun to see footage of Colorado that others have filmed. Pretty cool. Thanks so much for dropping over 🤙
Kevin, Great video! I just subscribed. I’ve heard that getting an OTC Thunderbolt Hub (mysteriously) improves the M1 Mac Mini’s read/write times for external SSDs. I would love to see/hear your perspective.
Ah, great to have you here friend. Sounds like you haven’t gone down the rabbit hole on the channel yet 😁 You might find my thoughts here: ruclips.net/video/Cl-W029t4LQ/видео.html 😉 There’s definitely a lot more to unpack on this issue.
Thank you! It seems that all I’ve been doing today is watch your videos. You do great work, and I have a lot of catching up to do. #1. I will check out your thoughts. #2. I had a typo (i.e. “OWC Thunderbolt”). Oops, and thank you!
Kevin: Your external SSD video for MI storage and the ViewSonic review are the reason I just subscribed. I posted some questions on the Monitor review vid and also sent you a personal message on your website. Can you offer a link for what kind of thermal tape to look for? TY
Hey friend...Appreciate you reaching out...I'm definitely on here a lot more than email, so I apologize on the delay in an email response...They get a little piled up. 😀 As far as the thermal tape, I just used what came with the enclosure. Many of them will have the tape, but there's really no "fantastic" brand per se. Something like this: amzn.to/3hU6MVw Would suffice. I'll head over to that other comment now...see you there.
Hi Kevin my Fledgling enclosure arrived, set it up with a WD SN750 SSD, black magic states write 1700-1900 and read around 2500-2700, much faster than the Sabrent at 1600, thanks for this great video
Well alright. Good to hear you got some improvement there. This is always great to get these numbers because I wish I could test every enclosure, but just don’t have the resources to do so. I’m glad it’s better and I hope you continue to get better throughput.
That’s a great question friend. I know the Sabrent is often times more readily available. I don’t have it, but I did consider it. I may just have to pick one up for testing.
@@KevinRossRN Cool, just ordered this one to try it out through your link. I agree that the enclosures are a good option if they end up making thunderbolt 4 enclosures, we can swap out our SSDs for the increase.
Exactly! And that’s awesome. You’ll have to tell me what you think. I’ve been testing out more 3.2 USB SSDs to gather data, but I keep coming back to this enclosure.
Kevin, great video! Randomly stumbled upon this video. If I’m looking for an external ssd to purely edit on, assuming the nvme is the route to go long term wise just based on potential update to thunderbolt 4? I’m not very tech savvy so I wasn’t quite sure what internal speeds were for what setup in the video. My Mac mini m1 only has 256gb. Figured it would be cheaper to buy an external.
Definitely cheaper to go external SSD. As far as USB 4, I did do a test of a USB4 enclosure...it’s an updated video on the channel. The USB4 enclosure is also compatible with other USB-C devices, while the Thunderbolt 3 would only work with TB3 devices. Do you feel like you want to build your own, or just get something like the Samsung T7 or SanDisk extreme?
@@KevinRossRN thank you for the response! I don’t mind building my own. I just switched from windows to mac and want to create a better work flow. My windows kept crashing from updates. I’m just starting to learn video & primarily shoot portraits (Sony Alpha 1).
Nice! Yeah, my son and I built a PC yesterday and I forgot about all those lovely blue screens. It’s a beast of a build, but the operating system is pretty hit or miss this far. So have you narrowed down an external SSD? I mean this enclosure is nice. I still use it all the time. I also use others in my rotation.
@@KevinRossRN the joy of windows lol. I was going to go with either the sandisk pro or the nvme in the external casing you recommended. Would running either of them work great as main hard drives to edit on and run apps with?
Either one will work great. I did do a video on running apps on an external drive. The short of it is that you can have the app on the internal drive and then have all of the libraries, media, etc on the external. The SanDisk I tested was the 1050MB/a read and write...just in case you needed that info. You could always go faster, but these M1s have been a bit limited on that speed, but as I’ve talked about in my videos, the real world use case is what I focus on.
Hey Kevin great video. Just to confirm...for these 3 different tests (TB3 enclosure, SanDisk, and internal SSD) you were running the FCP library directly from each device, correct?
Ha! I need to tell Adrian I’m leveraging her clothing company for clickbait thumbnails 😆 Much appreciate you Javier. Glad to be of service. Many thanks 🙏
This is a good idea since I’m switching from a Mid-12 MacBook that has an upgraded (installed it a year ago) Samsung SSD. Should be able to save some money taking this route. Thanks!
Say what!? Saving money and getting speed? Now that’s what I love to hear. Just double check your compatibility on that SSD, but if it’s M.2 then you’re good to go.
Great content, Kevin. Just had a quick question. Are you using the TB3 cord that comes with this particular TB3 enclosure? Some of the Amazon reviews were worrying me with faulty cords. Wondering if you had had any problems?
Thanks for the in-depth review, a little patience seems to be the wiser of the two options. Anyone who has time to fiddle around and experiment inside of drive enclosures, instead of rolling with the tried and true option (Sandisk) in this case, has other potentially disastrous variables to consider. Get to work!
Are you using the Extreme Pro v1 or v2 in this video? It seems you link to the V1 on Amazon (while you write upgraded model in the text), so I must guess that's the V1 (the one capped at 1050MB/s) that you are using? Too bad that M1 (with supposedly USB4) doesn't have USB 3.2 Gen2x2 support to support the 2000MB/s USB SSD drives out there..
It’s the G25 version, so 1050MB/s, but there’s also two versions of this and the 2000MB/a version as well, so it’s pretty confusing. And yeah, unfortunate about the throughput on these TB3 controllers.
@@KevinRossRN I ordered a blue 8 core GPU version with 16GB and 512 SSD. Big upgrade from my old 27" Imac from late 2013. With the 512 GB internal, I know I need to set up a 1-2TB external drive.
The blue is a nice color. And yeah, I’d say for anything intensive that 16GB of ram will help. And even with a 1TB internal, I have several of these enclosures I work from.
Thank you for the amazing video as always. If I want to edit on a Mac Mini M1, will it be faster to edit if the footage (both source and output) on this SSD enclosure? I'm no concerned on transferring these files but I want to know if export time is faster on this SSD
The difference between the external and the internal is going to be negligible with export times, but keeping the source files and output on the external is a very common practice, and something I still do. I recently did an update to this video where I got almost the same export times with internal vs. external.
What model monitor are you using. I noticed you are using an ultra wide monitor on your MacBook Pro and can you do a video about using an ultra wide monitor on a MacBook Pro.
I did do a video on it and will be updating it. The exact one I have should be linked below, however I have been testing it on the new MBP, and so far it’s been great.
Just found your channel. I bought my first MacBook Pro last week and I’m looking forward to getting back into video editing after a long break. Does running an external ssd though a hub slow down the read write speed? I’d like to connect a monitor, external drive and power supply, so a hub makes sense right?
Congrats! As far as the hub, I would not run the SSD you’re working off of through it, UNLESS it is a wall powered up that will give you TB3/TB4 speeds because the bus powered hubs won’t give you that necessary throughput. However, if you wanted to connect this Enclosure/SSD directly into the TB3 port, then use the bus powered hub to push an external display and a USB 3.0 external drive, then you could do that.
Excellent video Kevin! What I would like to know is how did you connect your TB3 devices; were they directly connected to the system bus on the M1 mac, or were you using a hub? I know that not all hubs are created equally, and that some divide the TB3 ports, which slows down transfers, while others seem to be powered from their own source. Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions?
It was connected directly, but I have done a video where I did use a hub and the one I used did improve the speeds, however what really helped push those speeds is being able to slam those ports with other tasks at the same time.
@@KevinRossRN TYVM Kevin, that was helpful! Now, are you going to do a test where you compare the differences between them? I'd be cool, especially if you use real time tools and apps like you did with the external storage media. Keep up the great work!
@@KevinRossRN That, and also how they interact with direct versus hub connections. Sorry about not being clear enough as I'm still on that long learning curve of a "noob" ;^)
No worries. I can find that video where I did that test with the hub…I’m on the mobile RUclips studio app, so for whatever reason I can’t grab the link from here.
your color grading is awesome man. btw, i bought that same monitor you are using, do you know of any monitor arms i can use so i dont have to use the huge stand it comes with?
Thanks! Funny, I was working on this yesterday. My current mount wouldn’t support the monitor....Too heavy. I’ve got a list I was working through, let me check it.
This one is on my short list, and it apparently holds more weight than advertised: amzn.to/2YJpcPX There's also another one I was looking at as well that does have a built in USB port at the base: amzn.to/3je7TQO I believe the weight of the Viewsonic is about 17lbs., however there are 34 and 38 inch monitors on this setup. I'm also looking through some wall mounted options, but still researching those. I'm definitely ready to get some space back and get rid of the included base/stand. 😀
Hey man your video was great, I learned a lot. I hope you can help me on my Imac 2017 27 inch. cuz its getting slow now when I do video editing and graphics what would you suggest for the external hard drive to be able to speed up at least? Do I need to use and work directly on the external hardrive with new mac OS? and use the old fusion drive as my back up files? Thank you!
It depends on the program, but for video editing you should be able to work on the external without issue. I would recommend at least 1,000MBs read and write because you’re not going to reach speeds beyond that (typically), because the limitation will be with the CPU and GPU reading and writing.
I’ll check out his video. What I will say is that I’ve followed up and tested this again, and used a hub to saturate the throughput as much as possible. Even tested it on the M1 iPad Pro. Unfortunately it seems the controller can adequately manage the communication protocol unless it’s close to or fully saturated, which takes several tasks running simultaneously to do 🤷♂️
Yeah depending on where you’re buying these DIY setups may be quite the investment. It’s great from an upgradability stand point, but I will say that the already built enclosures are still a great value. With these latest Mac machines however, it’s really the only thing you can upgrade since there’s no way to add more once you’ve purchased it.
@@KevinRossRN true. Though buying an external ssd is much cheaper than upgrading storage from them. I have been looking out for a good storage for edit out. E
Oh for sure. This is definitely an investment worth making, I think. Not to mention the obvious use with other machines if you decide to switch to something else.
It's nice to have super high speed external storage, but I doubt it's a critical requirement for the vast majority of people, even they are processing a fair amount of video. I do about an hour's worth of video editing a week. I only ever keep the files associated with the current project on the local disk because it's only when I'm actively working on that project does disk performance impact production. As soon as the project is finished, and I'm ready to move onto something else, I transfer the files to external storage, freeing up the local disk space for the next project. Unless you follow a practice like this there is no amount of internal storage that will ever be enough - it's only a question of WHEN you are going to run out, so it's an essential habit to get into. The matter to be determined then, is how to optimise the use of the different types of storage available to maximise performance where you need it, and minimise cost where you don't. The time taken to archive files is generally not critical to any work output, certainly doesn't impact video processing work, and can happen while you're engaged in other activities and so within limits it doesn't really matter how long it takes. All you need to calculate, therefore, is what constitutes your true 'working space', and size your high-performance/high-cost storage (whether built-in or external) accordingly. For all other storage, performance is secondary, and you are better to save money/increase capacity. Obviously, if you need to revisit a project that's been archived there will be an overhead in retrieving it, but that should only be an occasional event and so a minute extra here or there makes no difference. People often believe they need something that they don't, when what they actually need is to work more efficiently.
Comes from another video about saving money with external drives. Bought one samsung T7 just now. Just curious whats the software you are using to monitor the system activity. At 11:53 it seems can monitor different external drives read/write which is fancy.
I've been quite happy with my Samsung 4TB QVO drive in a USB 3 enclosure. Although I am using an older mackbook 2015 for my editing. I have used the Sandisk but the storage gets eaten up to fast.
@@KevinRossRN Yeah, but I need to figure out a better way to manage my files. They get so big, this is my 2nd external drive. 1TB sandisk made it like 1 month. Even after trying to clear optimized files and such.
I would highly recommend a NAS. I’ve been trying to put together something because I’m upgrading mine, but the external SSD is much better for working off of then storing, and specifically because of the cost per TB.
Yeah that chip should work. After doing a ton of research it seems to just come down to the M.2 configuration, which the Sabrent has and seems to often be one of the first choices (along with Samsung) in these enclosures.
Thanks good video. The reason why I’m not using these enclosure is because of the bad reviews on some of them so worried if I buy I won’t get the full benefit
Are you looking at one of the Gen 3 Samsung options? One of the reasons that helped tip me over to SP was that was able to pick it up at about the same price. I then went down the rabbit hole of SP data/reviews to find that although it’s not what most would call a household name (generally speaking), the brand seems to have quite a bit of a following in the community. But Samsung is probably one of the first SSD brands that people think of. It’s where I started my research.
Yes, the bundle and the original media are on the SSD. I’ve been working it that way for years. There’s really no real world difference of trying to keep the bundle on the internal because FCP still has to read/write anyway, so the performance improvement would be negligible if any different. But yes, all of it on the SSD.
Glad to have you around here.🤙
I honestly thought I was watching a million subscribers channel. You deserve not 1 but 2 million subscribers.
I treat it like a million sub channel. Just putting in the work my friend. Appreciate you hanging out.
Happy to help.
Wow, would've never guessed if it wasn't for your comment.
Great quality!
Many thanks! Hope it helped.
You're spot on with your comment! Totally agree.
He will definitely get there
I love that you actually showed the render R/W values.

Speechless. High quality video, real talk and honest. I'm a fan.
Thanks! Really appreciate it, and happy to have you stop by.

Hey really awesome to have you here and look forward to seeing you around the channel. Thanks Barry!
I’m hoping we’ll get one of those Big Sur updates that’ll fix this, but it’ll also probably be buried in the info section as a “TB3 improvement” like it’s magic 😀
But seriously I’m really just hoping this has something to do with how Big Sur has to also function on these intel machines and it’s a kernel issue that can be patched.
I’m sure there are a few folks out there testing harder than I am trying to figure this out. There’s definitely an Apple team that goes through these videos, the online forums and support communities looking for common issues. This would definitely be one of them 😉
If I get wind of a fix, I’ll definitely be posting it.
I need to update to Big Sur 11.2, but I doubt there’s anything there that’ll improve this 🤷♂️
Man, apple better get you on board soon, these tests are just so good
Ha! Well I almost think that this is what Apple intended... for us to test these machines in ways that didn’t exist in a lab.
It’s certainly kept me busy while we’re all inside these days. I’ll have to figure out how to film outside when we can get back out again 😁
Appreciate you brother. Still inspired by the mood on that last video of yours 🔥
I use a WD Black P50 SSD on my M1 Air and use it to stream very large East West Composer Cloud orchestra samples into Logic Pro. Very good performance so far. Might be worth a mention as well.
Well I will definitely take a look at that one. Much appreciate the suggestion friend.
this is so great on every level. so much more thorough than other bigger channels, congrats on making a great video :D
Well I appreciate that. Just trying to do my part. 😉🤙
Mine came with fairy dust in the box 😄
But seriously, it’s plug and play and works with the M1.
I’ve actually never heard the fan on the mini 😀
No shame in waiting as we’ll see more updates coming in the next couple of months.
@@KevinRossRN Ya. They probably won’t even mention it if they fix it.
You got it 🙄😉
@@KevinRossRN 😁 Merry Christmas to you and your family man. 🎄
Right back you brother. Merry Christmas to you and yours 🎄

It’s a nice feature that can also get annoying if one little change is made and it wants to re-render the timeline 🙄
But yes, I do tend to go back to double check stabilization or any kind of optical flow just to make sure. On the M1, it just makes it so much easier to do these things. I’ve never had a machine this capable and I’ve had some fairly powerful PCs in the day.
The future with this architecture (for both PC and Mac) is bright 😎
Appreciate you hanging out friend. Always thankful for the community here 👊
Awesome information. I've been curious about the benefits of getting an NVMe to set up as an external Thunderbolt drive. You've answered my questions quite thoroughly. Thanks!!
Well alright, I’m definitely happy this helped friend. 👊
The Sandisk Extreme Pro (i think the drive he uses in this comparison) is also NVMe, just fyi.
It is indeed 🤙

I dunno if I would put thermo tape over the sticker. Probably won’t hurt anything. Great video.
Thanks! Yeah, I know it’s a mixed feeling about the tape. I’ve already registered the serial number and have a photo saved. Honestly, with this enclosure it’s likely not a necessary since there’s a fan 🤷♂️
I’ve read that some of these stickers are metallic and transfer the heat. Is that true, and if so, which ones?

Dude, your channel ROCKS! Your videos are really, really helpful.
Since I struggle severely with internal SSD space (and until 2h ago also with my external WD HDD 2TB - your other vid set me back into the safe zone of 200GB free space) and editing on a next-to-full-HDD via a USB 3.0 isn't fun I guess, I would follow your suggestion and get a SSD + shell and change it as soon as it dates out. Guess this is the most sustainable solution (ecologically and economically). Using a screwdriver shouldn't be too hard. Agree?
Ha! Maybe I could work up a tutorial on using a screwdriver 😉
And yes, these setups really aren’t that hard to put together and it really does give you more longevity for sure.

It’s still very capable and affordable 😉
thanks for your videos. really helping me here to decide which m1 setup i will get.
Sweet! I love helping where I can.
Thank you so much for sharing this info. I'm goning to get the gen3 and put this together. Could I ask, which monitoring app are you using for your M1 on the menu bar? I'm trying to look for one that works with M1 well. Many thanks, and great video. Subbed!
Gen 3 will definitely be a cheaper way to go. 🤙
Thanks! So yeah, the 2 TB version does have the SSD in it while the 0GB is just the enclosure.
Mine is still going strong. I love it.

Thank you friend. Glad this is helpful, and I will continue making similar content. Sending my best.
So double checking the SSD, it is a Gen 3 SSD, but plenty fast for your needs. Which system are you currently using?
@@KevinRossRN I'm on a 2016 15" Macbook Pro, 2.9 GHz Quad core i7, 1tb internal SSD. Sounds like this external SSD might be faster than what's inside my MBP.
Have you tested the read and write on the internal in that setup?
There are reviewers who have great information to share, but their personalities/presentation can be grating/annoying/unwatchable. You have a great personality for presenting...please don't change!
Well I appreciate that friend. Glad you’re here and I hope to continue to provide value. Many thanks. 🤙👊
Another great video. I really appreciate the work you put in and share with community.
Well these do take a lot of time, but I know it’s helpful. Appreciate you as well 👊
Loving this channel right now, testing what I don't have the money to test, so I can decide on a better set up. Weird my SSDs max speeds on ANY port is 380~ so theres so sort of bottle neck happening.
Thanks!
So are you using something like the T5 with 500-550 Read/Write?
@@KevinRossRN Yep thats the one!

Thanks for this informative video. I like how you approach this in an honest way from many angles. Appreciated!
Just doing my best. Happy to help and appreciate you hanging out here. 👊
@@KevinRossRN Will return most definitely for more, keep up the honest reviews and appealing tone of voice (and choice of words)!
Well it is a pleasure to have you here. Appreciate you as well 👍
Greta content as always! I wonder how this compares to the Sabrent Thunderbolt 3 tool-free enclosure? Does that fan make a difference?
That’s a great question friend. I know the Sabrent is often times more readily available. I don’t have it, but I did consider it. I may just have to pick one up for testing.
@@KevinRossRN Cool, just ordered this one to try it out through your link. I agree that the enclosures are a good option if they end up making thunderbolt 4 enclosures, we can swap out our SSDs for the increase.
Exactly! And that’s awesome. You’ll have to tell me what you think. I’ve been testing out more 3.2 USB SSDs to gather data, but I keep coming back to this enclosure.
You’re a good guy, Kevin.
Well I appreciate you taking the time to let me know, friend.
Great Review... I really like, how you reviewed the Temperature on the devices.
Thanks. Glad it helped you out.
That monitor looks crazy wide! What make/model is that!?
The exact model is in the description...it’s a Viewsonic 34” which isn’t as wide as they make them, but it’s as wide as I wanted to go 😀
Hey Kevin great video. Just to confirm...for these 3 different tests (TB3 enclosure, SanDisk, and internal SSD) you were running the FCP library directly from each device, correct?
That is correct. That’s how I always run them. On the external. 👍
Clicked because I saw the Still Company hat, wasn't disappointed, great video Kevin!
Ha! I need to tell Adrian I’m leveraging her clothing company for clickbait thumbnails 😆
Much appreciate you Javier.
@@KevinRossRN ok, thanks, Merry Christmas!
You bet. Merry Christmas to you as well 🎄
Keep it up Kevin. Excellent review, better than anyone else doing the same.
I appreciate that friend. 🤙
Thanks for sharing. Is this enclosure Thunderbolt 3 ?
It is indeed.
@@KevinRossRN thank you again !!
My pleasure.
Great content, Kevin. Just had a quick question. Are you using the TB3 cord that comes with this particular TB3 enclosure? Some of the Amazon reviews were worrying me with faulty cords. Wondering if you had had any problems?
I am, and I also have other TB3 certified cables. No difference in performance and I haven’t had any random disconnects or anything like that.
@@KevinRossRN Thanks so much for your time and info!
You got it. Best of luck 🤞
And thanks for your time here. Working now. 😉
Now I need to try these on my new m1 Imac I just ordered.
That’s awesome you preordered a new iMac. Which one did you go with?
@@KevinRossRN I ordered a blue 8 core GPU version with 16GB and 512 SSD. Big upgrade from my old 27" Imac from late 2013.
With the 512 GB internal, I know I need to set up a 1-2TB external drive.
The blue is a nice color. And yeah, I’d say for anything intensive that 16GB of ram will help. And even with a 1TB internal, I have several of these enclosures I work from.
@@KevinRossRN Like the other thread, I may go DIY enclosure, unsure about the OWC hubs, but if the speed is doubled ...maybe.
Gonna do this, looks like fun.
It definitely is fun my friend. If you try it, let me know how it goes.
@@KevinRossRN Thank you for the quick reply. You just got another subscriber
Happy to help friend. 🤙
Awesome to have you here.
You mean the differences between the enclosures and SSDs?
@@KevinRossRN That, and also how they interact with direct versus hub connections. Sorry about not being clear enough as I'm still on that long learning curve of a "noob" ;^)
No worries. I can find that video where I did that test with the hub…I’m on the mobile RUclips studio app, so for whatever reason I can’t grab the link from here.
What camera are you using to film this video, 🎥is it the a6400?🧐 Asking because it looks really good 😌
Thanks! Yep. I love it.
your color grading is awesome man. btw, i bought that same monitor you are using, do you know of any monitor arms i can use so i dont have to use the huge stand it comes with?
Thanks! Funny, I was working on this yesterday. My current mount wouldn’t support the monitor....Too heavy. I’ve got a list I was working through, let me check it.
@@KevinRossRN awesome, thank you!
This one is on my short list, and it apparently holds more weight than advertised: amzn.to/2YJpcPX
There's also another one I was looking at as well that does have a built in USB port at the base: amzn.to/3je7TQO
I believe the weight of the Viewsonic is about 17lbs., however there are 34 and 38 inch monitors on this setup. I'm also looking through some wall mounted options, but still researching those. I'm definitely ready to get some space back and get rid of the included base/stand. 😀
Ssds are great for video editing. You can also speed up your read writes by putting your os on an external nvme and booting usb 3 ss.
Yeah, I run an OS on an external for one of my machines. So far, it’s been great.
Thanks for the video. Good advice for a rookie like me.
Keep learning friend. Experiment and have fun with it.
I would recommend at least 1,000MBs read and write because you’re not going to reach speeds beyond that (typically), because the limitation will be with the CPU and GPU reading and writing.
is it reliable long term though?
I happened to be using it today.
Another great video! Thank you
Really appreciate it, and thankful for the time you spent here.
Great vid! I bought a different enclosure a while ago from Asus, will try it on my mac soon!
Nice! Most definitely let me know how it goes when you get it all set up. 👊
@@KevinRossRN For sure. Since it's on $54, could be a good cheap alternative!
Sweet! Well, you know where to find me. Always love hearing about saving a few bucks while still getting great performance.
Thank you for your work on this
You bet 👍
Thank you!
Great video tell me will all this apply to the newer M2 CHIP.
It’ll be even better. Fledging went out of business, but the Acasis I have linked up is great. Use it all the time.
Jerry Schultze just did an SSD test and high temp slowed SSDs waaaayyy down
I’ll check out his video.
What I will say is that I’ve followed up and tested this again, and used a hub to saturate the throughput as much as possible.
Even tested it on the M1 iPad Pro.
Unfortunately it seems the controller can adequately manage the communication protocol unless it’s close to or fully saturated, which takes several tasks running simultaneously to do 🤷♂️
Here in the Philippines, the ssd itself is affordable however the enclosure is almost the same price with the ssd.
Very well stated friend. I appreciate you dropping that detailed nugget of information here and your own experience.
Excellent content! Subbed!
And that’s a mighty fine comment 😉
Thanks! It’ll be great to have you around.
Duuude, just found your channel! Super good, got a sub from me. Looking forward to watching more!
Thanks! Definitely more testing once those next MBPs get in our hands. Awesome you’re here.
Comes from another video about saving money with external drives. Bought one samsung T7 just now. Just curious whats the software you are using to monitor the system activity. At 11:53 it seems can monitor different external drives read/write which is fancy.
That T7 is solid and the monitoring app I’m using is iStat Menus. I still use it.
@@KevinRossRN Great! thank you so much for your quick reply.
You bet.
Just awesome all around. Thank you kind sir for your hard work. Glad I found your channel.
And I’m glad to have you here. Thanks!
I've been quite happy with my Samsung 4TB QVO drive in a USB 3 enclosure. Although I am using an older mackbook 2015 for my editing. I have used the Sandisk but the storage gets eaten up to fast.
That 4TB is definitely nice to have. And a great reason to have these enclosures is being able to upgrade the SSD.
Great vid, thanks Kevin, I can't find that exact sad in the uk, I've found the case. Would this SSD work the same?
Sabrent 1TB Rocket 4 Plus NVMe 4.0 Gen4 Pole M.2 Internal SSD (SB-RKT4P-1TB)
Yeah that chip should work. After doing a ton of research it seems to just come down to the M.2 configuration, which the Sabrent has and seems to often be one of the first choices (along with Samsung) in these enclosures.
@@KevinRossRN thank you mate. Really appreciate you taking the time to reply.
Well, I do try my very best to keep up in the comments. 😉
Best of luck and certainly feel free to let me know how it goes.
Thanks good video. The reason why I’m not using these enclosure is because of the bad reviews on some of them so worried if I buy I won’t get the full benefit
Understood. I’ve been continuing to test it daily. So far, it’s been great, but I can also relate with those reviews as we’ve all gotten a lemon 🍋
@@KevinRossRN thanks. Do you recommend Samsung instead of SP?
Are you looking at one of the Gen 3 Samsung options? One of the reasons that helped tip me over to SP was that was able to pick it up at about the same price.
I then went down the rabbit hole of SP data/reviews to find that although it’s not what most would call a household name (generally speaking), the brand seems to have quite a bit of a following in the community.
But Samsung is probably one of the first SSD brands that people think of. It’s where I started my research.
Hey Kevin, Where do you keep your fcpx Library? Does it all put together with the raw footage inside the SSD?
Yes, the bundle and the original media are on the SSD. I’ve been working it that way for years.
There’s really no real world difference of trying to keep the bundle on the internal because FCP still has to read/write anyway, so the performance improvement would be negligible if any different.
But yes, all of it on the SSD.
@@KevinRossRN I see, thank you for enlightening me
Happy to help. 🤙
