I'm not a professional fighter but I do some martial arts ( taekwondo blackbelt, and freestyle wrestling ). I had a friend who was a Muay Thai fighter and I used to train with him. The first thing I found against him was that I need stronger thigh, the first time we fought he just throw his knee into my thigh and I wasn't able to walk properly for a couple days. Then I found If I just want to use taekwondo I will just damage myself because whenever I throw a kick into him he would respond with a damaging low kick into my thigh. The first time I managed to win the fight ( after 5 times ) I did another strategy, I just throw a no power dollyo to distract him to respond me with a counter-attack then I switched to the wrestling guard and I found if I could manage to catch him without getting hit by his elbow or knee wrestling gonna be the king because he had very low stability, and I could use it to throw him out of guard make setup for my spin kicks. By the way, your control over kicks is god tier. I don't how that's possible, I start taekwondo at 7 and I am blackbelt since 12 and I can not even think of having that much control.
Haha. Thanks. I've been training since I was about 6 or 7 so I've had lots of time to practice. Thigh conditioning is so important. Checkout my video on how I condition my legs. If you don't do it you won't last 3-4 low kicks. ruclips.net/video/Zt0Jg2dEzVE/видео.html
You are excellent! Why do the trainers not teach these kinds of things??? It would make my life less miserable in those first fights... ;) I lost a fight because I let the opponent clinch me the whole time. I was slow to stop her from coming to me, and she was taller, so I lost, and she dominated in the clinch.
I was just wondering do you switch kick often as I see a lot kick boxers don’t use the switch kick they just kick there lead leg in the front without switching
You need to have also a pretty strong leg to defend against their very strong lowkick. If you're a boxing dominant like Gab, you lead leg is always on heavy weight making them very susceptible to lowkicks. You gotta have the grit enough to counter their lowkicks not with checks but with bracing and doing lots of combos after and overwhelm them. Still gotta drill them a lot tho thanks a lot man
The only problem eith not clinchjng and not throwing middle (body) kicks is that you wont score too many points. So is this more of a way to knock them out?
Im asking cuz, I practice boxing, and I use both stances. Then I tried dutch kick boxing. The real problem was the kick checking. They were always hitting my front knee, cuz they couldnt outbox me. Then I learnt to use the side movement, so they couldnt hit me all the time, cuz checking was painful. Switching sides and kicking was pretty effective. Then I used once the oblique strike, and it was pretty hard hitting. I changed to southpaw and hit his front knee with my front right leg. He didnt kick for the rest of the match ,and was losing his balance easily. I know its dangerous but it's effective. Is it illegal?
I mean it’s a pretty broad area since there are different styles for different Muay Thai fighters but yea. Personally I value my higher level kicks, and actually I value a lot of my boxing defense. Since I train in the west more. so personally some tips would be better against my style and that’s if I don’t make changes and change, and don’t adapt. But all in all great vid.
Thanks dude. You're right. It's a broad topic and I could easily make this video an hour long to cover all the details and changes required for different muay thai fighters. These are just my quick suggestions for the normal muay thai stylist.
@Purger Of Heretics Thanks. It was really sticking to the strategy and not being intimidated by him. He is a defensive master but you can only slip so many shots. Combos are great against guys like Lerdsila.
I'll make a video on it. It wasn't as impossible as it seems when you implement the general strategy we create to fight opponents. Looking forward to sharing my thoughts on this.
Without a doubt, Gabriel Varga is among the best and most knowledgeable kickboxers in the world and could probably win over many muay Thai fighters but generally muay thai is superior to kickboxing if clinch elbows and knee are allowed. Common kickboxers cannot win in a fight against the common muaythai fighter. SKILLED kickboxer beats commonly MEDIOCRE muay thai fighters. In other words, train hard ,become a better kickboxer and follow Varga's advice
Haha. Yes. That's an option. I didn't go that route because I'm already a kickboxer and wasn't interested in switching my style. So I guess this video is for people who are similar to me and want to stick to their fight style. But simply being better is always a good solution.
Instead of this video I kinda prefer to see the professional breaking down the difference between Muay Thai and kick boxing moves (cut out the elbows and all the uncommon stuff but compare all the things both styles have in common).
#1 way to beat a Muay Thai figher: Fight them under kickboxing rules so they can’t elbow or use a real clinch. Then make vids about beating Thai Boxers 😂😂😂
Muay thai fighters are great at muay thai. They'd wreck anyone in the clinch but as you said don't have any training on the ground. But every time you change the rules to a sport it's a whole new world.
Oooo. I do love watching Japanese kickboxers. Hands are on point (especially the counters). Awesome kicks. A bit weaker in the clinch but a solid kickboxing country no doubt.
Nobody in 90 kg can throow 170 punches in combos like with 65 kg in a fight. It is impossible. You are in a weight very fast but heavyweights should be more efficents, deffensives and take the control of the fight with other methods. I think
Still Muay Thai is most effective art in the world... usually thai fighter's don't prefer high kick or middle kicks usually we prefer strong low kicks and the distance with the footwork after landing a shots and counter attack, doing sweeps with the fake kick or clinch. The master of the art like saenchai, lerdisila and buakaw will eat you...agree Muay Thai have less techniques but each technique works effectively, fighting under the rules of Muay Thai is harder to fighter of the this because of clinch mind games poking elbows, sometimes the headbutts everything I mean come on man complete stand up striking art with grappling as well as locks.
@@stanclark3992 brother there are things which make this art superior to any martial arts,... practicing and conditioning let's keep this apart,...it's an art of eight limbs,Muay Thai stance is proven as the best stance in the world of fighting, our guard while striking, our footwork, balancing speed with techniques both with the power,.. striking ability during the footwork, and moreover what makes us unique compare to others is that every Thai fighter the can study his opponents during the fight.... moreover there's a clinch, grappling and sweeps which are 100% effective, and in advance level of Muay Thai we come across with the Harmony of traditional techniques, like mema Muay Thai, the art with the ability of matrix, best example: lerdisila, samrat, legendary saenchai....and the best thing about this art is it makes you fearless by doing sparring session, fact Muay Thai fighter's can survive more hits than any fighter's,...if you're talking about a techniques we don't need to apply our advance techniques in a fight,we can win with the basic techniques.... doesn't mean our advance technique won't work, every technique is 100% effective.
Does Lerdsila count? Rajadamnern Stadium champion with over 200 fights. Beat him when I had about 20 fights. Used some of the suggestions in the video to get the win. Plus fought lots of other muay thai champs within North America. Again using the tips from the video. I make suggestions and give advice after it's already worked for me.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial yeah but thats traditional mui tai fighters but many in the art adapt to apponents fighting style and learns there weaknesses and dont make same mistakes just sticking with there style alone.
@@E.a.Z.S.e.n.T Absolutely. That's just a good game plan. I like seeing thai fighters who can beat most people using their traditional style. But I'm even more impressed by thai fighters who can adapt. Buakaw showed he pretty good hands and nice head movement. That was cool to see.
These are similar tactics that dutch fighters use against him. The issue is he's so much better than most of them. Or anyone in the world. But the tactics work when you get high level dutch fighters like Andy Souwer or Albert Kraus who fought and beat him (although they also lost to him). If I was fighting Buakaw (without the weight class difference) this is exactly what I would use.
Solid performance against one of the best ever. I remember watching that fight being super impressed someone was able to push Buakaw like that. What a great win.
If you will be better than Muay Thai You must be brave to use any weapon, punch your feet, knees, elbows or even your head like Burmese boxing You win muay thai just because he misses, yes you win, but if there is a 2, 3, 4 or 5 times, you will lose muay thai because muay thai is the most dangerous. It's not a martial art, it's a real martial art.
This argument always seems hollow to me. Kickboxers tell boxers it's only hands and not real. Muay thai tells kickboxing it's only 6 attacks but missing elbows...not real. MMA can tell muay thai you're not doing ground work so it's not even close to a real fight. 😆 NONE of them are real fights. They are all games with rules. I know more ground work than muay thai fighters because of my MMA fights. I don't tell muay thai fighters what they are doing isn't real. They are all legit but are still just a sport.
@@intermaths1128 You can always prevent that with knees or elbow. Lethwei and Muay Thai keeps distance by push kicks or if their too close, knees, elbows, headbutts or kicks.
You can't defeat Thai fighters dude. Your best chance is to cut them so the referee steps in and ends the bout. Note that doesn't mean you have defeated them. It only means you got lucky with the rules! Here is my take on your tips. 1- Thais will break your boxing as the bout proceeds and you continue to counter middle-round kicks (roundhouses!) as you do in the video. 2- A Thai will keep you at the edge with teeps from the second round onwards. Feel free to shadow-boxing combinations and hit the sky! 3- Crazy techniques you say? I do that sometimes with them. But unlike you (playing smart), I know that I can't carry on with crazy techniques throughout the bout. I know that they will get my tricks sooner or later. A spinning kick will connect only once. Thais will dash and sweep you from the second spinning onwards. Thais don't sweep, not because they're traditional, but because spinning kicks are high-risk high-reward. You also call a super-man punch an unorthodox technique that Thais aren't accustomed to!! Well, the super-man punch originated in Muay Thai. It's called the cobra punch. It was adapted to the super-man punch by westerns. This made it less effective! 4- Why not throwing roundhouses?! There is something they call escaping the catch and counter. With that, you can do a lot of things. Throwing roundhouses also gets your Thai opponent to think about where to place his. 5- Nullifying the clinch as you demonstrate it in the video is roughly impossible without getting kneed. Altogether, it seems to me that you're selling some Oyama snake-oil (you know what I mean!) in this video. But remember that the last karateka to defeat a Thai was a cheat (spinning kick)!!
G P don’t be dumb any style can be beaten Muay Thai is highly effective but as is Dutch kickboxing and actually it’s rare you see thais win in lethwei so by your logic that’s the one you can’t defeat
@@awesomezombie4565 Еxactly! Following the logic of these pricks, for example, a BJJ practitioner can't be smoked by a thai fighter just because the BJJ can grab legs and easily take down the opponent who threw the kick/knee,then on the ground from mount or any position, the bjj would seek opportunities for submissions and what if the muay-thai fighter has no clue how to counter submissions? He is going to be like stunned.

@Ota Ku This isn't about Varga in particular. It's about Karate in general. It does NOT work! Looking for proofs? Well watch Rua vs Machida, watch Holzken vs Daniels, watch Sagat vs Pete Sugarfoot (bias, this one was ruled a draw), watch Changpuek vs Thompson (f*cking Thompson-Oyama cheat). In my other comment, I tell you why it won't work even with Varga's hacks added. Most karate dojos are dangerous f*cking sects. The mother f*cker went on to crack my pinky!! Learn something, your ignorance is getting me a headache!
A joke compared to muay thai? I'm assuming that's what you mean as it's a very reoccurring attitude among muay thai fighters. Here's my thoughts. All fight sports are hard. Why call one a joke? Muay thai fighters will win at muay thai but won't beat boxers at boxing, kickboxers at kickboxing or mixed martial artists at MMA. And those 3 disciplines won't defeat a muay thai fighter at their own sport. Assuming athletes are elite and have similar skill levels. Muay thai fighters tell kickboxers it's not real fighting because there's no clinch or elbows. But remember mixed martial artists could say muay thai isn't real because it's only stand up. And still MMA is just a sport. We aren't fighting for our life so who's to say there isn't someone much scarier when it comes to no rules. In the end I say each is hard and if muay thai fighters want to come into kickboxing and then lose don't complain about the rule set. The lack of clinch and elbows was in the contract. I respect all disciplines whether they lack legs, elbows or whatever.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial You are correct to assume that that is what I meant. Reguarding grappling, throws such as those in Sanda (I've been training Kung Fu intensively for about 4 months) can be effective, but ground fighting rarely is. In a real fight to defend your life, bringing the fight to the ground can bring all sorts of unpredictable outcomes, and is almost never a smart move, even for a grappler...

This was cool!
I’m training inThailand right now and plan on fighting as Well. Great tips, gonna use them for sure!
Amazing
your fight with lerdsila is just like fight i read in kengan omega kaolan wogswat vs carlos medal , waaoo i love your spining punch to ledsila..
I like the spinning backfist as well. After landing it I threw it too many times after hoping it would land again 😂
@@GabrielVargaOfficial yeah most powerful attack is a surprise attack, i believe Lerdsila also learned from it.
@@TheTHUSWORD 100%. I don't think he's ever get caught with a hard spinning backfist again. He's just too good to make that error twice.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial do you also practiced with saenchai?? or planned to fight him?
Boss please show a link where you fight
You are excellent! Why do the trainers not teach these kinds of things??? It would make my life less miserable in those first fights... ;) I lost a fight because I let the opponent clinch me the whole time. I was slow to stop her from coming to me, and she was taller, so I lost, and she dominated in the clinch.
I was just wondering do you switch kick often as I see a lot kick boxers don’t use the switch kick they just kick there lead leg in the front without switching
Brilliant!!!
Thanks.
Still gotta drill them a lot tho thanks a lot man
Thank you i have a fight coming up here in 4 weeks, hes a muay thai guy
The only problem eith not clinchjng and not throwing middle (body) kicks is that you wont score too many points. So is this more of a way to knock them out?
Is oblique kick (a strike to opponent's knee) illegal? Cuz im pretty sure, with some good boxing and this strike, you can win.
You are not suppose to target joints but I see lots of knee attacks so you could probably get away with it.
Good boxing and low kicks goes a long way.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial thank you.
Gabriel Varga yea ofc ur the Man U beat a defensive and evasive G.O.A.T like lerdsila.
@Purger Of Heretics Thanks. It was really sticking to the strategy and not being intimidated by him.
He is a defensive master but you can only slip so many shots. Combos are great against guys like Lerdsila.
How Did you manage to get a W against Lerdsila? He Seems a guy who is hard to prepare too
I'll make a video on it.
It wasn't as impossible as it seems when you implement the general strategy we create to fight opponents.
Looking forward to sharing my thoughts on this.
Gabriel Varga that’d be awesome!
Nice post
My 8 years son figh next 2 week i need some video with conditioning program
I am a Taekwondo guy. How can I defeat a Muay Thai guy? Shall I go for side and spinning back kicks???
A little update for u we Thais realized our defense is terrible so many Muay Thai fighters apply other styles to sharpen their defense now.
Toshio Fujiwara did most of this, that's why he mostly wins againts thais
So basically master the long range and really close range, stay out of the mid range
Thanks, Now i know how to beat my muay thai learner friend
Haha. Helping friends punch friends.
There's a simple answer how to beat a Muay Thai fighter. Learn Muay Thai and be better than the other fighter.
Haha. Yes. That's an option.
I didn't go that route because I'm already a kickboxer and wasn't interested in switching my style. So I guess this video is for people who are similar to me and want to stick to their fight style.
But simply being better is always a good solution.

The Most important thing is fighting them outside Asia, it really is!
bwahaha.,..

So basically the way to defeat a Muay Thai fighter is to also fight Muay Thai haha
My thai grandma didnt stand a chance💪🏾🗿
Instead of this video I kinda prefer to see the professional breaking down the difference between Muay Thai and kick boxing moves (cut out the elbows and all the uncommon stuff but compare all the things both styles have in common).

I love Muay Thai and this is helpful to avoid these techniques so not only am I learning the counters I’m learning to counter these moves
Muay thais might look intimidating but to be honest they are not good fighters. Any mma guy or a wrestler can beat them
Muay thai fighters are great at muay thai. They'd wreck anyone in the clinch but as you said don't have any training on the ground.
But every time you change the rules to a sport it's a whole new world.
Yea until u fight a mt fighter who also does mix martial arts
Muay thai is not the most efficient striking in the world. Japanese kickboxing is
Oooo. I do love watching Japanese kickboxers.
Hands are on point (especially the counters). Awesome kicks. A bit weaker in the clinch but a solid kickboxing country no doubt.
Thank you! My grandmother won’t have a chance now!
Nobody in 90 kg can throow 170 punches in combos like with 65 kg in a fight. It is impossible. You are in a weight very fast but heavyweights should be more efficents, deffensives and take the control of the fight with other methods. I think
Who else searched this to be like yoo Hobin
I just beat Sanchai thanks lol
yeah right fight a mui tai champ then talk.. not proven just theory
@@GabrielVargaOfficial right you know what im talking about.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial so you got any videos of you fighting in a ring professionaly?

Try this against buakaw.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial yea bro, it's actually the practitioner mainly both have flows and both have advantages.

Escrima...
@Windows xD I think that Thai guy would have won he wouldn't got carried away and let that dude get a hold of him
@@awesomezombie4565 Еxactly!

In my other comment, I tell you why it won't work even with Varga's hacks added.
Most karate dojos are dangerous f*cking sects. I sweeped & tossed to the ground the last 4th-degree Kyokushin I sparred with. I picked the mother f*cker up, showed respect, & started to take it easy on him. The mother f*cker went on to crack my pinky!!

Muay Thai is greatest of all....can not beat a real fighter...
kickboxing is a joke change my mind
Great video!
