That is actually legit crazy how far he made it without learning how to check low kicks. Just shows how dangerous his stand up can be
I was shocked when he told me that. A rematch would have been very interesting to me.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial rematch against bazooka joe woulda went the same way, there’s learning to defend low kicks, then there’s defending bazooka joe low kicks
Good foot work, never being where the kick it's going to be till fighters start just kicking till it landed, killing good foot work for Raymond, like wise MVP in there losses.
@@fpsneb7408 joe did not "just kick till it landed" nor has anyone else ever because that would just make you lose the fight bruh
How do you think those thick gloves affect the dynamics of everything you said? Wouldn't mma gloves make it a more fair fight for the kicking expert? He can get through your guard much more easily.
Cool to hear this from a high level fighter who himself started out with one of these styles.
I come from a TKD & Shotokan Karate background
When I transitioned to Muay Thai my trainer could tell I trained in something else from how I threw a roundhouse; I thought he was gonna correct me, but he said no that it would be harder for MT guys to read my technique.
Made me feel good, and showed me a different mentality than old school martial arts: I was encouraged to use what works for me as a fighter, rather than being forced into a box where moves are only correct if performed "just so"
Sounds like a good trainer 👍
Speaking of Steven "Wonderboy", Thomson, you should hit him up for a crossover episode, seeing how he has his own channel and works with other martial arts RUclipsrs like Icy Mike and Sensei Seth.

Same here
Remember when I started Thaiboxing coming from a Taekwondo background. The hands were difficult to adjust (trained at a boxing gym also to learn), but the kicks were easy to adjust to Muay Thai. Taekwondo kicks aren't totally worthless - you learn speed, variation and timing.
Right but u must have that timing that sped and that IQ taekwondo don't work for fighters Thant stick to ground and go for po we and timing rather than speed. And for those people also that brag about learning taekwondo but when they fight they look like fukin stuck in the mud
and then came the low kick :)
@@koan7144 no, the low kick was dealt with a long time ago, then WTF became olympic and everyone stopped teaching people what jumping switch kicks were for and how to use them to check kicks and return fire.
Started with TKD here. The kicks and even the low kicks came very naturally but the hands took me a while to adjust to. I still have a few bad defensive habits but its always getting better.

I laughed too, but then I got sad because while I think it's decent to most, it's pretty bad to the Thai guys hahaha
My experience (as coming from taekwondo) is that we have a hard time fighting against a solid stationary defence, and lots of low kicks. Most people run out of gas just because Taekwondo is a more cardio intensive style and we don't have low kicks. So just relax don't make mistakes and wait for them to tire out ;) hand game and defence in Taekwondo is really evolving because people have started to join kickboxing tournaments, which is super awesome, so thanks for that!
I've been preparing to beat the crap out of my friend and your high quality content is always appreciated. Good Man.
I've got a fight against a tkd fighter this Saturday, and have been doing research as I've never fought one. We're fighting in a kickboxing fight, I am a mma fighter who mainly utilizes kickboxing and Muay Thai. Everything in this video was the exact gameplan I had made prior to watching, my confidence is skyrocketing right now, so ready, great video thanks for the information!
I think this video is twice as helpful for Taekwondo and karate fighters than for Muay fighters. You detail the exact skills "we" would need to defeat (leg kicks, kick catching, and clinching) in order to stay up with your style of kickboxing. Also you detail weaknesses most TKD and karate fighters show: not using hand combinations, not checking leg kicks, standing inside the kick range after side kicks.
That's such a great opportunity to improve our approach to the game. Thanks!
This man never misses with the timing of his videos
Yeah Tbh it’s kinda spooky. Every time I have a new question he uploads that exact video.
Awesome. I wish I could get out more videos for you. Maybe when I crack 100,000 subs and I retire from competing I can make it a full time job. 1-2 videos everyday.

Awesome vid Gabriel, ive mainly been learning just your style i recently changed my stance to side ways for better kicks but i utilize a more squared stance too with a high guard never liked having my hands down now i know what to look out for while in that sideways stance. Cheers
Nice videos. Keep it coming. :)
Awesome video, champ!! Helps my perspective a lot because I have a taekwondo/karate background but I'm training muay thai now and trying to have a more versatile and balanced fighting style.
Just started kickboxing, I also started in karate as a kid and tried to start boxing when I was a teenager but didn't have a good club to go to so I often go back into karate muscle memory, this helped a lot. Thanks
It's always fun to watch those flashy styles, but seeing a great MT fighter deal with it reminds you how poised the style is
This is very usefull. Got some of those in my gim
Thank you so much! My fight is today!!

As a former TKD fanatic and fighter I agree with all the errors you exploited in this vid. Every martial art has its weaknesses and it is on us to correct ourselves and find our own effective way to win our battles; not just in the ring but also in life.

Great video......... I do Taekwon-do ITF and I really enjoined this video
U explain very clearly
I study Tang Soo Do (similar to TKD but far less sport aspect) and I'm tall, so I learned boxing fundamentals specifically for this reason. Simple things like keeping your chin down, hands ups, replacing your hand punching hand with that shoulder, not telegraphing a punch, and head movement. Now, I'm beginning to study Muay Thai to add more elements to my bag of tricks.
I was one of the guys asking this question. This video is a veritable gold mine of information. Thank you!
Always a pleasure to make videos at your request Mark.

This is quickly becoming one, if not the most, of my favorites channels on all RUclips. Thank you sir.
Wow, thanks!
Could you do a kickboxing shadow boxing routine? Focusing on defence? It would so useful thank-you👍🙏
Michael Venom Page does that sometimes. Bounces around out of reach studing your holes and then BAM!
Fast in and out with great power and very precise.
I hate the pokemon thing... but I love his style.
Is great how you cornered your opponent so he stop bouncing!
I guess that that kind of fighter is not used to be clinched against the ropes, and must hate it.
Great as always!
You great man.👍All of your videos are hight quality
Thank you so much 😀
Nice video😍🤩🙏
A really great video... pretty much sums up everything you need to know about how to increase your chances of beating a typical karate/taekwondo fighter. These tips are exactly the things I've found to work when I fight other karate fighters (if your karate style skills & theirs are about equal, just box or clinch). Not being able to train at the dojo last year forced me to learn what I could online. Videos like the ones on this channel have really helped me improve my kickboxing skill (just because you practice karate doesn't mean you have to bad at kickboxing & in some ways your kickboxing can help you in karate/taekwondo as well).
Nicely put. I like to think the same way.
Just because I'm a kickboxer doesn't mean I should disregard techniques from karate, taekwondo or muay thai. There's plenty of things I could incorporate from all styles.
As a TKD guy transitioning to Kickboxing this is super interesting. I’ll keep these in mind 👀
I’m a TKD fighter who’s training for the 2022 AAU TKD season. I’m looking to mix things up and adopt a more Muay Thai approach to fighting, much like you laid out here. The hang up is many techniques in Muay Thai are not allowed at these tournaments (leg kicks, punches to the face, knee & elbows) as well as an abundance of protective gear (shin and forearm guards, chest guards, etc.).
I’m determined to still make it work as it’ll be a lot of fun to go against the grain and challenge myself in such a way. This video gave me some great insights as to how I should adapt my training. If you have any additional tips or suggestions for my situation, I’d greatly appreciate them.
I genuinely enjoy your videos, I cannot have my meals or breaks without watching a video from you. Such a knowledge guy, I’m sad I barely found out about you!
if he keeps up the level of content he's producing now, this channel is gonna blow up, I'd bet a lot of money on it
Thanks guys. I'll keep the content coming. Fights will come first but a close second will be the youtube channel.
On point. As always. Excellent. You will reach 100k subs in 2021 🙏

As a traditional shotokan practitioner you're mostly correct. Most karate schools don't teach you to strike fast enough with your hands

Would be great to have you break down Raymond Daniels' lost in Karate Combat, especially since he had height advantage
What's annoying is my friend who's kicks with tawewdo and Muay tai kicks then he has a Philly shell to complaint it he's 14 and very good at all of this but bad takedowns so thanks this video will help with his spinning kicks
It would be fun to hear the advantages and disadvantages of each martial arts.
Check out some Bruce Lee books. Tao of JKD is one
hi gabriel can you make a video whether you should jump back and forth in kickboxing or rather walk… i often see the pressure fighters walk more and outside fighters jump a lot…
I have a 3rd degree black belt in tkd , I have good fast kicks but I don’t bounce around more of a Thai style stance but can launch crazy kicks
One thing I would say to watch out for if someone's practicing old Taekwondo is the lookout for the sidekick to spinning back kick combo. You don't see it very often in competition because of the electronic hogu it used to be a very powerful setup like the foot equivalent of jab and right cross.
One reason why you don't see a lot of checks in Taekwondo as well is because it's against the rules to low kick And it's against the rules to raise the knee without attacking. This obviously develops very bad habits for other combat sports
What you doing is new I love that😑❤
Historically Kickboxing is derived from Karate with more boxing/punching combos and defence added. To say face punch Karate is kickboxing is a misnomer because they move more in a linear way in a bladed stance with hit and move one or two punches then a kick. Whereas Full Contact/ American kickboxing is like Karate with boxing hands and strategic evasive footwork.
Man...your left hooks to the body are savage.
My favourite 😀

I was a karate fighter once upon a time so you and me both. Constantly changing up your style is smart.
Thanks for the love 🙏
Now, about a year later, you're getting the W in Karate Combat!!
Excellent! I would only add to create angles. TKD and Karate fighters are very linier with their offense and defense.
Good addition!

Your tips makes sense as usual very good tips as a former instructor i agree with everything you said basically, but I wouldn't take the hurricane kick to the guard (double sided guard)if I could avoid that kick all together, if it's a hurricane crecent kick it's ok but if it's a hurricane round kick it's so much harder than a Thai high kick or a mawashi Geri type round kick and if they do it like me, connect with the shin you will still get rocked or kicked down..i have one video of it on my channel.and my last trainer in a club i was substitute helping instructor for the slow Learners i wasnt allowed to do that in sparring not Even in the dedicated sparring day's after I did it on The owner because he got really rocked and had to go and take five minutes on the bench and complained when he came back to the sparring (Lars Erik)and said we are supposed to go 70 percent but he can't really do it correctly.its not possible to because it's not the muscle strength The mechanics alone even when being kinda relaxed but doing it correctly can knock you out easily Even you have both gloves outside each other etc.its basically like blocking a Thai high kick with a MMA glove.,, you should instead shuffle forward so he's thigh connect instead of the instep or shin.. it's atleast triple the power of a Thai high kick..in featherweight it's maybe ok but not extra hw like me or WORSE.
Thank you a lot champion, it's really helpful, I'm a taekwondo guy with boxing training, I'm gonna fight a karate guy taller than me and he's not ready after this video haha
👍 😀 Awesome.
Have a great training camp and fight.
For the most part my background is in Taekwondo but I’ve been in a fair amount of street fights (self defense from bullies). Since I had eat a lot of punches to the face which it’s not fun so I was forced to learn to keep my hands up. Thus my stance and blocks have always been closer to kickboxing. But I never had boxing or kickboxing trying. I do want to train and compete either in Muay Thai or kickboxing, not to attempt to be professional (I’m too old for that) but to better my chances at self defense.
When are you going to hook up with Stephen Wonderboy Thompson, Ramsey Dewey, Sensei Seth, and Icy Mike?
Hopefully once this pandemic is over I can travel down and do some filming with them. In person is so much better than remote collaborations.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial
Patiently waiting.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial That would be super awesome!!!! :)
I trained karate for about 8 years and switched to muay thai/kickboxing for some of these reasons and more. To me the most thrown attack on the “street” is some kind of hook, and karate did not teach me how to defend against that. That was the biggest reason I wanted to switch
one of the way to counter the spinning back kick is the side step to an overhand, sometimes it is just like the sheer power of the backkick is so intimidating that many inexperienced people like myself choose to step away from it, instead of jamming right into it and land a counter. A great example is an ONE championship match where Martin Nguyen KOed Eduard Folayang with a side step overhand while Folayang, a Sanda specialist, was in a middle of his spinning back kick.
Cool I learned another block today xDDD. I like karate and Muay Thai but your style seems like best of both worlds. Would like to learn more effective blocks
You should watch one of his earlier vids called Thailand vs Holland where he compares different aspects of MT and KB in order to mix them up
@@champ1159 yeah that was good one. That was the first video I saw and subscribed coz was out different martial arts at home. This style I find very Swift and mobile combining both is awesome
This video hits different after the Lyoto Machida/ Ryan Bader fight.

I think you would be very interested in jhoon rhee taekwondo. its definitely more modern and the hands are a lot better than more traditional styles
Could you also do a positives on Tkd and karate style in modern combat sports? Or maybe how to fight like this in combat sports?
Mostly it is about learning boxing and proper defense, like blocking as he showed in the video. Some things in karate and taekwondo can be useful, but I think you should be able to learn or relearn bad habits as bad guard and not tucking down your chin. And be more grounded in your stance to take impact.

My second Muay Thai fight was against a fighter who started out with Taekwondo.... from the off I could see him bouncing about and trying that downwards chopping kick which I did very well to avoid,, he did however almost knock me out with a fancy head kick but auld killer here grabbed him in the clinch when he noticed me floundering and tried bouncing in for a boxing combination.. I returned the favour with strong knees and he was saved by the bell... I just never gave him time or space to bounce about and almost knocked him out myself in the final round with heavy boxing... but I lost on points. I was 36 & he was 18😎😎😂😂😂
Low kicks can be avoided, bypassed, blocked from side stance. Depends on how fast you can move your leading leg. You can kick away the low kick. You can make kick combinations. You can punch the leg/knee of the oponent. Huge advantage of side stance is that oponent can't reach effectively your liver. Punch the leg of the oponent in mid air. Block the kick with elbow.
It's time to teach that karate bully some lesson. Thank You Sensei..👍👍👍
You talking about Johnny Lawrence? Don't worry, he got humbled at the all valley.
You still need to practice timing. Watching a video won't make you good at it. Like it said, you need to train to instantly return kicks for kicks. And you can't think your way through it.
That is so good to know for a taekwondist :D :P But about the tornado kick, Mr. Varga, I've seen numerous examples in which the opponent just stands there like hypnotized until it hits him. It baffles me, because this kick isn't one of the fastest possible. Do you, with your experience, have noticed that too, and what do you think about it, why is it so?
Ey bro Ive been boxing For awhile now I wanna mix my boxing with karate but there is no Kyokushin in my country only JKA I just wonder if they have axe Kicks? Cause like I've been doing this kick and sparring with my friends they don't really expect it
At our TKD school, across the world from you, we do boxing instead of all the open hand techniques. Also it’s pre 2004 Olympic WTF TKD where power, speed and technique are equal as opposed to just speed for hit sensors. One of our instructors was our country’s under 18 Olympic Sparring champion and state Kickboxing champion.
Nice. That sounds much harder to deal with.
Smart evolution!
@@GabrielVargaOfficial Thank you Sensei!
at least that guy you messed up kept his guard up a little lol
Another helpful tip for cornering the elusive tkd/karate fighter, you will notice as soon as they get close to the corner they will circle to whichever side has more room, be ready for this, when you are getting them close to the corner be prepared to feint your next punch, and as soon as you see which direction they start to circle towards cut them off with a fast hard leg kick/body kick. They will either circle into it or stop in their tracks, follow with more hands and pressure towards the corner
Learnt this sparring a guy who had a tkd/karate background as a child then moved to professional boxing as a teen and transitioned into Muay Thai, was a pain in the ass to spar because once you made it past his ranged kicks he actually had good hands and would piece me up, so I learned to pressure but stay relaxed and counter, then cut him off when he tries to circle and continue the pressure
Hey Varga how's it going? In a past video about "how many fights should I have before going pro" you said that you'd recommend around 40 amateur fights at least before going pro. My question is, how are we supposed to do that without developing CTE even before going pro? A few days ago an amateur fighter died in the ring because of a head kick even though they were wearing shin protection AND helmets, so this got me thinking about what you said. Thanks for the content man!
Hmmm. Maybe I'll have to change that number. I only had 15.
I think 15-20 is enough if you a skilled.
Get good at defence. I've taken very little brain damage. Never had a vision trouble, head pain the next day, trouble recalling information. Defence is a major priority in training for me.
I am a middle red black In WTF TKD and am going to study Goju ryu after I get the black belt. ITF TKD is hard to find plus it’s traditional taekwondo. I am 34 and plane to do mma any tips and advice.
What's up big varg! Oss! I'm a up and coming fighter and I'm asking you to please make a video of dos and donts of your cornermen.... Please because my brother is gonna make me fight him instead of the opponent 😂
Haha. I'll see if I can get my brother to film a cornerman episode with me over the holidays.
Lol - Thanks for giving tips on how NOT to be KOed ;) - Great video!
So much can be said but look at *THE SPEED* .
Hi Gabriel, I am new to the sport of kickboxing and for some reason i started raising my knee up to check front kicks and side kicks, and it works for me. Is it bc I spar with other inexperienced amateurs like myself or is it a valid defense against front and side kicks to the body?
Very valid defence. Definitely keep using that.
With your recent (Dec 2022) 2nd karate combat fight, you've just had your 2nd such fighter.
How about the other way aroud? How to succeed in muay thai or kickboxing with a karate or TKD backround.
That's me 👍🙂
I can certainly make a video about my evolution from a point fighter to kickboxer.
The jumping in and out style is more common to tae kwan do. Karate syles like kyokushin dont jump in and out neither do they use so much side kick.
Well as a sport karate and Muay Thai fighter I know weaknesses and strengths of both martial arts, karate side stance footwork in and out counter fighting blitz sidekicks spinning kicks hook kicks and axe is there techniques, but being sweeped is the biggest weaknesses and if not trained in kickboxing leg kicks, and most them are shit with there hands so boxing massive, but works both ways Muay Thai/kickboxers have shit footwork take lot unnecessary damage slow and find that side stance in and out footwork big problems to solve at first
