    Let's talk a bit about politics in music (specifically metal), and how it's funny to say politics don't belong in music with a bit of history and a bit of the psychology behind it. What're your opinions of this?! Be sure to let me know down below!!!!!!! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Then way to me i dont HAVE to agree with someone’s views on things to just enjoy their art. I am a progressive leftist and i will continue to listen to Classic Burzum, Nokturnal Mortum, Death in June, Peste Noire, I HATE their views on the world but I also think that they are musically good. I dont think that just because you listen to a controversial or terrible means you endorse their actions or support their ideology. I just think thats a narrow minded way to view art and people.

    It's always right-wing or above-it-all cowardly centrist types who get mad about politics in music. What they mean is, "Stop reminding me that I'm privileged enough to not have to care about politics. I don't want to have to feel guilt or consider my place in the world." Very interesting topic indeed. People think politics and they instantly assume modern culture war or contemporary politics, when in reality politics encompasses A LOT more than that. Even the more mundane things could be seen as political. Hence why people ignore politics of 80s thrash for example, they are just focusing on the present.
    I'm going to go on a limb, but I see a lot of people get absolutely furious when someone claims that every art is political and I never understood why such a statement is seen as controversial. Like you said, art is a form of expression and politics can shape some factors like your environment. Hell even not choosing to add politics to your art, is already a political statement on itself, as silly as it is.
    Even with that in mind, it is a case to case basis for the individual like you said. I don't care about politics in metal, but to deny their importance in the genre is just false and ridiculous to me.
    Great video like always.

    Ok fuck it, you get another comment for engagement. I love talking about this and trying to get my point across.
    Let’s extrapolate on Judas Priest. Modern Priest is amazing, absolutely fiery and incredible for a band that is half a fucking century old. I love modern Priest, but it just doesn’t hit the same way classic Priest does.
    When Rob Halford wasn’t writing songs like Sinner, or Painkiller, songs about larger-than-life entities, a LOT of his lyrics put out there how young, lonely and *horny* Halford was back then. It was very on-it’s-sleeve.
    But he was obviously writing around his orientation because the PMRC alone would have tried to eviscerate the band even harder than they already were if Rob was OPENLY gay. So open secret it was, until 1997.
    So instead, he created these love songs, a large amount of fucking love songs, that everyone can connect with regardless of gender and orientation! would they be as effective at doing specifically that without the obnoxious anti-gay stigma that stank up the 1980s? We will never know.
    But it is very much why classic Priest in particular is incredibly near and dear to my heart.

    • @TheMetalTempestYT
      @TheMetalTempestYT  9 дней назад +1

      Absolutely love this comment, thank you so much! And that's so fucking true--even the silliest of things could seem like they have not much meaning, and yet mean SO much in retrospect. Priest is great to dive into for that reason and Rob as a figure in general!

    Y’all. Art is inherently political. It does not matter WHAT the medium is. If it is made by human hands, colored by human experience, for better and for worse, it is ALWAYS political. You cannot have politics without humanity.
    When you consume art, you are also consuming the artist’s political bias, whether implicitly or explicitly.
    Separating art from its creator CAN go somewhere, because art inherently distorts from creator to consumer due to, y’know, unique life experience, but it is ultimately limited. It is up to the consumer to either favor preferable political biases (the safe choice) OR consume what you want and think critically about what it’s trying to tell you (risky! consumes time and effort!). Because what it’s trying to tell you might also tell you a lot about yourself, for better and worse.
    I have marinated with this thought process a LONG time this year 🖤

    • @TheMetalTempestYT
      @TheMetalTempestYT  9 дней назад +4

      Exactly! Political is subjective and truly all music and art is at its core, even if not outright!

    • @flyingbodysymphony
      @flyingbodysymphony 9 дней назад +3

      I will happily give kind of a wacky example of how art’s meaning can distort from the creator intent to the audience.
      One of my favorite Acid Bath songs is Scream of the Butterfly. It is not very metal at all, compared to the rest of the album, a sort of breather track. Except the lyrics very much depict two Bonnie-and-Clyde style heroin addicts on the run.
      But I was OBSESSED with this song for a long time because something about the sheer melancholy and apathetic detachedness of the song resonated with my life experiences as a transgender individual. I spun this song constantly for several days and nights as a direct result because it scratched that highly specific itch in open spite of the fact that 20% of the lyrics did not gel with my interpretation whatsoever
      that is genuinely the beauty of life and art, imo

    There was a viral Instagram clip of Bryan Garris of Knocked Loose introducing Oblivion’s Peak (A song about his friend suffering through anti-LGBT hate crime) by saying “This song is for the LGBTQIA!”
    I couldn’t believe the top comments under the video, calling them “wOkE” and saying things like “I am no longer a fan of this band” and more to that extent and in massive numbers. Sure there were some defending but it wasn’t nearly as prominent. It’s so frustrating the amount of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric that is still so prevalent, and in a scene of music that is SUPPOSED to be a home for the marginalized.
    After this, a song like Motionless in White’s Slaughterhouse and Stray From the Path’s work are SO cathartic for me. We need more bands to just speak out like that against the bigotry in the scene and just straight up tell people that we don’t want them if they’re gonna be hateful or ignorant of differences.

      i got you. still, people have their minds and views. people who are against LGBT or wokism or whatever seem to be marginalised by woke and LGBT community as well. music is freedom and just because you dont agree with something doesnt mean youre a bad, hateful person.
      there are many songs with different meanings, it doesnt shock me that many KL fans felt this way when he said what he said - it was pretty straightforward and could be said in many different ways, ways everyone would agree with.
      i cant help to get this feeling a lot of artist are not genuine with that and say it in fear of being cancelled (im not saying KL did that though)
      LGBT community appears to many as a very toxic community and i cant blame them.
      personally im against hate, you can be whatever you are but you need to accept that some people might not like it, and they have a right to say it loud as much as the others

    • @Aster_Risk
      @Aster_Risk 9 дней назад

    • @bretbuckley704

      Regarding the last sentence of your middle paragraph, there's a simple answer for this; LGBT activists became insufferable and treated support like it's an obligation. They started advocating for ridiculous things like getting kids involved in their lifestyle and in transgenderism, making up genders and pronouns that don't exist and none of which they can even coherently explain. But we're supposed to celebrate and accept this because...reasons? Progressive activists specifically seem to have this problem where they are simply incapable of admitting that they're ever wrong, or going too far. They suffer from this mentality where they think everyone and everything MUST unconditionally accept and agree to all LGBT terms and conditions top to bottom without question. When you get into metal you recognize that it's a lifestyle, a music scene, and a culture that is simply not for everyone. It is, and and always has been about embracing your individuality and not begging society, corporations, and government agencies to accept you. LGBT activists are the complete opposite. They do not get how niches work, or even aware that they even are a niche. So ask yourself why has society been losing interest in supporting them? Their activism became toxic and a lot of their community became a cesspool of unlikeable, entitled activists who think the world revolves around them. The left has done an awful job at representing them in a way that inspires people to support them, and it's on the LGBT community for doing this to themselves, and that's a harsh reality a lot of them are going to struggle coming to terms with. Understand this is less about my personal opinion, and more about the observations I've been making.

    Metal has always contained political lyrics, ever since Black Sabbath wrote War Pigs. Thrash metal and grindcore has a huge political backbone to rebel against the system and the government. Usually people who say that are hypocrites who are just saying that because they disagree with said views. At the end of the day, metal will always contain political lyrics and it’s up to the listener to choose what they want to listen to.

Political beliefs are a common part of the human experience, artists of all stripes and backgrounds will inevitably create around what makes them passionate and politics is a topic that evokes that sort of energy for a lot of people. Thrash metal, with influences of punk music, is definitely political. And they keep that anger in the music. They say "fuck war and the political figures"
    Grindcore has also been known for political lyrics. And I love it. Because there's humor while still letting the listener know "hey i don't like politics or x political beliefs"

    Then there is KMFDM. I don't like their criticism of Capitalism and the US specifically. Like any other song is about criticising modern society , especially American. But at least they are not preachy like SOAD, ironic and funny.

    😏As a music fan. I usually don't mind if artists/bands wanna have political content in their songs. As long their music is still good, and fun.
    But to say that politics don't belong in music, films, and video games is very silly, because those types of mediums are considered to be art. So, therefore, people have every right to incorporate whatever they want into their product.
    Now, if you don't like the song or the film being political. Just simply don't buy their product, because they didn't make their product exclusively for people like yourself. They made these products exclusively for themselves.
    And, also the people who wanna complain about politics being injected into music, films, and etc are just the fringe types, because not everybody who isn't into politics usually don't care about politics being injected into certain fields of entertainment.

    I understand and agree with many of your points, but I think the video fails to discuss one very important aspect, namely that of financial support. In my opinion it is important to ask ourselves who or what ideas my money goes to finance. For example, I would hate to know that my money is going to support someone who will then use it to oppress ethnic minorities.
    I also listen to musicians with different ideas from mine, but in extreme cases such as that of declared fascists, I don't buy their merch and I try not to recommend the band to anyone who might pay for their music.

    "...if u buy some sort of merch from an artist with questionable views..."
    Uhm, yeah I think that's where u actually financially support an artist if u ask me. If I see someone wearing NSBM merch I don't automatically think "ugh, neonazi!" but by wearing that merch u at least tolerate it or don't think the lyrical content is not such a big deal.

      I definitely get where you're coming from. I think it depends on if you're purchasing via label or artist. I'd agree direct support can't be underestimated but I've known people who buy merchandise from bands they very much dislike the message of !

      @@TheMetalTempestYT I gotta say it's a personal bias here though, I mean NSBM seems to me like a genre of music that wants me dead... me being Jewish and all. But yeah for me it;s very difficult to wrap my head around the fact that u even wish to have a band logo like that on display. It's just something I may have to adjust to.

      my thoughts exactly, listening to music is one thing (i'll still side eye people but whatever) but when you start giving literal nazis money thats when the line has absolutely been crossed

      Exactly. By wearing that shirt, you acknowledge the existence of those bands and are basically saying “yup, I’m alright with them.” Even if you don’t agree with what they say.
      Not exactly buddy-buddy, but I know which side of the fence you’re on.

    Politics has become more and more iniquitous as time as gone on. You can't escape it and people parroting the message when people want to just relax and hear good music is why people say this.

    Politics shouldn't be in Metal unless it's about extreme shit that has happened in history/intent to happen in the modern era/dystopian future. If it's about a utopian paradise then keep it in Punk or Psychedelic hippies music.

    Napalm Death be like8:15 THAAAANK YOU. more people need to hear this. i've lost good friends because this. one thing. just one thing inconveniences them and they go completely opposed. One of my friends who helped me get information for my transistion who was also trans went full alt-right neo nazi. they would attack other trans people verbally and were constantly telling me that neo nazis would save us all. All because they got kicked out of their house for being trans. wore being considered an honorary aryan as a badge of pride and honor. thats the worst case scenario. it makes no sense to me that people have so little patience that they deem it necessary to be out right adversaries just because they couldn't see someone within the same spectrum as what they consider normal.
