You guy's take so much comments from people that don't know their own ass from a hole in the ground. I think you have done a wonderful job on your homestead, you have a beautiful family and a nice cabin and a beautiful young daughter. You have your heart and soul in your homestead, and you be proud for what you have accomplished guy's, job well done. Be safe and God Bless
Man you took the words right out of my mouth, I subscribed after watching My first episode, Ashley and Jeremy have done an amazing job, I get tickled and impressed at how well they work togetger
thank you for what you did for Tony and Joanie! great folks! I subscribe to over a hundred vlogs but when a call for help comes in I am all over it! Love you guys!
Jumping over to Creekside Maples to share the love. Love what you guys are doing on your farm and excited to see what your relatives have up their sleeves. All the best to you from down here in Yankee Land.
You guys rock!!! B proud of what you've done ... Those that are critcizing have no clue what it truly takes n the sacrifices y'all have made to get where you are. I think after living there for 3 years and seeing where you started to where you are now you know exactly what's best for you and your family. Y'all have a very Merry Christmas and God bless you!! Now I'm gonna go check out the other channel 😊😊😊
I don’t know if some people think you’re supposed to live in a cave to make them happy. I’m 58 and learned that there are people who love misery and always want to share it. We happy people know you guys ROCK !!
I’m actually quite shocked that some people actually spend their time and effort to put down your channel or any channel. If they don’t wanna watch anymore they can just unsubscribe and that’s it. It’s like they’re trying to convince other people to do the same. Good on you guys for keeping ur cool. I wonder if I can keep my cool if I get some mcnasties commenting on my channel. A while back, a guy left a comment saying he liked my video but once he saw I was Canadian he was out... I told him to get off his pedestal and take a hike hoser. I like what u guys are doing. I keep chickens and ducks cause I want too not cause it’s cheaper. I can’t wait to grow my farm stay even more so I can offer experiences too.
Cool now you have all the bases covered. Smart to get hooked to the grid now while you can afford to do so. This will give you choices down the road depending on circumstances and your needs. It will also give you security to have back up heat and boy are you going to enjoy the more centralized ac in the summer. Hey my original MBF shirt is going to be a collector item. 😉👍🏼
@@MBFModernHomesteading love mine it is very comfy. No need to explain, you have the funds to get the power now,you would be foolish not to. First of all it is your place, second I think people are forgetting that you did what you could afford at the time. That you were a newly retired veteran and that you were medically retired (almost died) You were most likely very overwhelmed with all of that and not wanting to get into debt. I think it is great that you will have the power to do what you need. The power to maybe make things a bit easier for you and for Ashley. On top of that you will have your solar as back up. If you so choose you can over time modify it. Or if you ever get your little hunt cabins you can move the solar to the back 40. You have way more options now. This is just really such a dumb think for people to get angry or nasty about. Anyway that is my 10 cents (inflation)worth. 🤷♀️
Just checked out Creekside Maples and subscribed. They seem to be very down to earth nice people. Empty nesters like my wife and I. Just yesterday I caught myself missing having my 4 kids in the house with us 24/7. Took me about 30 seconds to start thinking about something else.
Thanks for explaining what it costs to run your homestead. I like your set-up and can't wait to see the final completion of your homestead. Thank and God Bless
Good for you guys! You made the right decision for what you need. There’s no need to feel bad about it. Just keep the videos coming. I really enjoy them. Refreshing to see a young couple having fun and enjoying life. You have something special there! God Bless.
As a Brother Veteran, first Thanks for your service, I was also medical release after 13 years, many many years ago. I live in Tx on grid our electricity runs around 200 dollars a month US ,but our main heat is a wood stove. Love y'alls channel. Do y'all and what makes y'all happy.
I used to have a dusk to dawn light for years and I loved it. We are in town now so we have a lot of light around. Love your channel. I’ve been a subscriber for quite a while back to when Jeremy was still peeing in the yard. ☮️❤️☕️-Kirsten
As one who has a large solar set up....i can tell you that your logic is 100% accurate. The larger solar systems are tricky. Fairly reliable but.... For example, My 100 amp Charge Controller just crapped the bed so....there's that. Y'all will enjoy the power!! Good for you guys!!
I have told that joke to my children so many times they finish it for me now. You guys are doing great. Thanks for showing real life and what hard work can do.
I have a sister that lives just south of you folks, Casco, Maine. Wasn't really fond of the area, too many trees hahaha, being a crop farmer used to big wide open space but they like it. Keep up the good work!! Enjoy watching your adventures!
Very glad you will be having power to live comfortably in 2021. Happy Holiday’s to you guy’s, be safe, stay healthy, God Bless everyone, Love your channel.
I have a modern homestead and didn’t even know it! Total solar, wood heat, venison in the freezer. It cost us less than 10 dollars a month to use the grid for a backup and we get a check every year foe the extra electricity we make.
i did a little math, Champion 5Kw generator uses 5.7 gallons per 9 hours. Gasoline prices in Canada are ~$5/gallon. So 5.7 gallons per 9 hours times 12 hours times 365 days equals 2774 gallons times $5/gallon equals $13870. This is $0.63/kwh. Average electricity cost in NB is $.127/kwh. Assuming 5kw*12*365 = 21900 kwh the hydro bill is only $2781/year. The power poles and breaker panel cost ~$9000 means they can pay for themselves in the FIRST year, Gasoline/Petrol = $13870 vs Poles $9000 + Power $2780 = $11780. Of course new fridge, new lights, heat pump, etc will ad to consumption with electric power but still a net savings.
7000 Canadian is roughly 5500 American, that is a great deal! I was quoted approximately 40,000 American to run lines to my place, for what I use it just did not pan out to spend that much. I can get a 4.5 kw system, batteries and all for 6500 so that is the route I am going. I am 100% sure that if I still had kids in the house I would look at that again. This was a great video guys! Lots of info!
I have had a grid tie solar for about 8 years now. I have all electric including heat and have a 0 bill about 9 months a year. The solar you have for backup is great, and you might look into net metering and a hybrid inverter in the future. Grid tie is great as I can use as much power as I need, send the extra back into the grid system when I make more than I use in the summer, and the system has paid for itself about now and should last many more years. Grid tie does go down when the grid goes down so I still have a generator for backup so that is a drawback of pure grid tie.
Moving to New Brunswick from Ontario never heated with wood before but love it. One thing I would add would be a transfer switch but you probably already have it. 🎄☃️🥰

If you're on the grid, hook up a few panels with grid tie inverters. No batteries no solar controllers. Panels produce power and it send power to grid to offset your bill.
In WA state my mini-split was $2500 US..perfect for use with a woodstove..I would need two of them or a really large one to use as a sole source of heat...1700 square ft Double wide. I'm know your home is much better insulated also. Plus they are super efficient compared to any other style of heat or ac source I've ever used.
You made the right decision Hen you start setting up your shop in the new garage you will be happy to have all the power you may need Hope thy can get your line run to have it by Christmas it would be a great present You and your family have a very Merry Christmas and may God bless you Bruce from Mason Michigan
Good information! Sounds like this is the best for you guys. If it was me , I’d do the same thing. Some modern conveniences are worth the cost. Thanks for sharing!
Ashley you and Josh have a merry Christmas. I had a question were is the daughter hiding. Haven't seen her in the episodes anymore. Glad you both have a plan for the necessity of life without going broke. Be careful and stay safe.
Back when I did the same math you guys just went through, it worked out that running a gas generator ended up being somewhere in the neighbourhood of 70 cents per kWH. I have zero regrets having gone on grid.
Good move with the 200A service! May not need it all but good to do up front!! Also going overhead with your lines in will be easier to fix if the wires were to get damaged compared to underground! Smart homeowners!
200A is 200 amps, right? And that’s typical house service size, right? We re living in 30A here 😱 but use propane with the electric radiant heater for now. Getting wood stove but want to use solar. On border of Ala and TN so lots of sun. Thx
Hi from Auckland sometimes people brain dead they don't think before they open their mouth why be so nasty! At 62 I have learned that life short we don't what is round the corner! There are people who cause misery and try hurt other's there is a old saying "what comes back in spades" they lose out in the end!! If we all thought being kinder to each other, a smile makes the world go round ! Better one kind word could help make someones day! You are wonderful parents Sam is like a bright " Little star' Have watching been for a while, you just dream of a big bird doing what they do well on their heads! And you make night's when I can't sleep because pain ! Love to watch your happy laughing at life you done so much to your place!😊😊😊 Ralph I agree with you!
I believe that you two have made the right decision, as you can pay an awful lot of power bills before you even get close to the cost of the two separate solar systems, one for the house and one for the garage. Makes sense to me. Going over to Creekside now. The wanted 200 subs by end of December, pushing 700 already.
well it's been fun watching you both ,I have lived offgrid for over 10 years now . But I must leave now that you hooked up to the grid . I'm not mad and I'm sure you don't care. But this ant my thing . You guy's have fun and I hope all things go good for you both . be blessed and live good and as free as you can .
All the best to you, I don't know what you could have possibly got from our channel if you were here because we were off grid because all we ever did was pretty much build. Grid or no grid on our channel, to be honest, is almost irrelevant as we rarely talked about it. Either way, have a good one.
Glad you're being honest about so-called off grid living requirements. When one tries to come up with non-infrastructure living, the initial cost is ridiculous and the result is always a compromise or pretty much inconvenient. There are many companies out there with gimmicks consumers buy into that just doesn't pan out. Solar systems, for example, is a big compromise, and it's not practical for many geographic areas. Wind and a backyard water wheel are another big compromise. If you have infrastructure available, use it because it's way more convenient. I have a hybrid car, but that's about as practical as automobile choices are at this time. Tesla, for example is a compromise. Maybe in the future, battery power will be practical, but with the current technology, not at this time.
Just a thought with a strong suggestion, you might want to construct a birdhouse roof with lattice walls over/around your condenser to keep the snow from packing around it.
I can’t remember if I already commented on your channel about this topic but my mom grew up without running water and power and so when I was growing up she would say her power bill was her favourite bill to pay. Also only YOU get to tell your money where to go and do what you want with it.
Welcome to the 21st century. I am 68 and grew up with wood stoves, very undependable power and all the hard work of raising animals. I cringe at even thinking about going back to that. Today a storm hit dropped 22" on us. I spent 4 hours snowblowing and I enjoyed it. But that much fun would last me till next winter. I love my modern conveniences. To me they give you time to do what you enjoy the most.
I don't know if they have any solar lease programs in Canada, but I lease solar in CT. You have to have grid power, but my power bill is only $9.50 (USA) per month with an $84.00 lease fee. It's a 20 year lease and fully transferable, if you sell the house. No batteries to worry about, but a good mixture of both solar and grid. You sell back any power you generate, but don't use. That's how the bill is so low. Something to think about. Zero cost for the solar installation.
Hi, I would seriously consider tying your solar panels into the grid with something like a "grid tie" inverter. It will start reducing your monthly electric cost - free power, once you buy the inverter. You can use the entire power grid as your "battery bank" with all of the benefits of unlimited power, and if the power goes out, you still are setup automatically. Something to think about.
You have done a good job of monitoring and determining what power you need...which has now informed your careful planning for obtaining the best system that will provide the power to do what you want to accomplish! That was well thought through so it is unlikely that you will be disappointed and have to change your plans! 😎👍
Solar has come a long way so unless you are looking at new systems it is hard to talk about. They come with long term performance and installation guarantees as well. However if you are close to utilities like you are, then get them. What solar today is doing is opening up land that could not be used before. Where utilities are no where nearby. Now you can homestead and have some modern conveniences that were not possible just a few years ago. You could have easily used a propane refrigerator to give you more power for the well pump, but I get it. You could get a gasoline powered welder/generator system for your garage, but it is nice not to need that. For your needs and lifestyle it only makes sense to hook up to grid. And as you say all that you have invested so far will be great backup when power goes down which is will do for sure with overhead grid system. No need to worry, as you are doing the smart thing. If the bills get too high, you know how to live on less by now and can just trim them as needed. Good luck and happy holidays.
When you get your elec bill, be sure to put it in comparison to cost of gasoline, running out to buy gas, cut logs, chop firewood, all that stuff, versus having electric, and having nothing to do.....
This is the time of the year where I wish I was connected to the grid. Solar panels dont get much sun in northern climates during winter but I have plenty of power Spring, Summer and Fall.
Jemery here in Townsville NQ Australia It's called reverse cycle A/C summer and so called winter, ideal 24c which I have running at the moment 35.5c out side.
A few years back there was a channel I was watching that was pretty close to your channel. A guy and his wife and I think a young daughter. Anyway, he was going over all of the costs and decisions and he ended up renting a ditch Witch and dug his own trench and buried his own conduit and wire. He didn't need it in conduit where he was, but said it made him feel better. So he buried the main power wire and then another with some 6 wire that branched off where he wanted to build a shop and phone and computer wire in another to the area of the shop. One last conduit that came up out of the ground every so many feet for light posts along the driveway. So in his set up he said he not only saved several thousand dollars off the power companies price, but got all the rest done for basically nothing at the same time. This was back before RUclips started getting real greedy. They pulled their channel after telling everyone what was going on. Was a really good channel...
I'm looking at a little 11.5 acre property myself and you better believe, I'm going on grid as soon as I can. Need to install a well and septic, but power is close.
I am really jealous. I had a quote earlier this year to bring mains electricity to my property, half a mile from the road, of £105000 UK. With your rates, I would definitely have gone down the on grid route. Happy Christmas to you all.

Back when I did the same math you guys just went through, it worked out that running a gas generator ended up being somewhere in the neighbourhood of 70 cents per kWH. I have zero regrets having gone on grid.
Y’all are doing amazing 😉
Sending lots of love to y’all’s channel 🥰
We love our heat pump! Merry Christmas
Happy to have you here and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
I believe that you two have made the right decision, as you can pay an awful lot of power bills before you even get close to the cost of the two separate solar systems, one for the house and one for the garage. Makes sense to me. Going over to Creekside now. The wanted 200 subs by end of December, pushing 700 already.
They are over 1000 now, thats awesome. Thanks :)
well it's been fun watching you both ,I have lived offgrid for over 10 years now .
On a side note, you are probably good to stick around until sometime next week as we are still off grid right now, haha ;)
Excellent explanation. In the end they are YOUR CHOICES.
Just a thought with a strong suggestion, you might want to construct a birdhouse roof with lattice walls over/around your condenser to keep the snow from packing around it.
Induction hot plate is good backup. When you can’t run to Costco for propane
I can’t remember if I already commented on your channel about this topic but my mom grew up without running water and power and so when I was growing up she would say her power bill was her favourite bill to pay. Also only YOU get to tell your money where to go and do what you want with it.
Same with Jeremy's mother :)
Ashley I love ur earrings, so cute, 💚🧡💙❤️💛💜💝. 🎄🌟🎄🌟🎄🌟🎄🌟🎄🌟🎄. Might want to put a little stove for the garage, so u can work in the winter
Thank you for the information guys
Happy Christmas from Big Sean Ireland
Merry Christmas :)
Thats helpful info guys. Thanks.
Imagine that "LIVING" costs money! 🤣 If it was FREE everyone would live FOREVER! 🤣
I think you guys made a good decision about your power. We did the same thing. Great video. Thanks 👍👍👍❤️
Jemery here in Townsville NQ Australia It's called reverse cycle A/C summer and so called winter, ideal 24c which I have running at the moment 35.5c out side.
Thanks for the answers 👍🏻
I just subscribed to Creekside Maples last night, they seem to be really nice people! Have a good night you guys, see ya on the next video:)
Creekside maples
Thanks so much... we try 😉
Subbed to your family love watching you all Canadians rock😎😎🇦🇺❤️🇦🇺🎄🎄👍
Thanks a million Maxine 😉 we certainly try 👍🏼
Merry Christmas you guys rock.
It is good if you build a snow cover over the heat pump
Cool, not that he is gone but the setup .
I'm looking at a little 11.5 acre property myself and you better believe, I'm going on grid as soon as I can.
Need to install a well and septic, but power is close.
You guys will loooove your heat pump in the summer!!
I am really jealous. I had a quote earlier this year to bring mains electricity to my property, half a mile from the road, of £105000 UK. With your rates, I would definitely have gone down the on grid route. Happy Christmas to you all.
Wow!
