I have carried a Kershaw Oso Sweet for at least 3 years and let me tell you, it’s Oh So Sweet! I’ve done just about everything you can to a knife and it hasn’t broken yet. That assisted opening action is silky smooth which came in handy one day jogging when a large dog attacked me. When the cops and owner showed up it was me, my torn clothes, and my bloody knife. I ended up in the hospital with 18 puncture wounds, a couple of gashes to my forearm, and multiple shots in the stomach for rabies. Without my Oso Sweet I would hate to think where I’d be. This knife has earned its place in my edc rotation. It may be 8Cr steel but it holds a good edge and it easy to resharpen.

Been using sub $30-$40 knifes all my life, mostly CRKT and Kershaw, and haven’t been let down yet! Never paid attention to steel type or handle material really. Most recently picked up the Byrd cara cara 2. I was intrigued by how light and thin it was for the size. Works great!

Thank you for going over some of the more entry level price points. I think too often we get so hyper focused on the signature knives, it's easy to forget about the blades we carry for economy.

I've been carrying the Rat-1 daily for about three years now. And I love it. Love it so much I have bought two more. I never go anywhere with out it. While all my other folders are collecting dust in a drawer. Its also very easy to sharpen, and maintain. If it gets dirty, its easy to breakdown and clean. Have to say, the best folder I have ever owned, and I have had many over the years.

You could have added the KaBar Dozier. It's one of the toughest knives you can get at any price really, but especially so in a sub $30 knife. They take a serious beating and just keep going strong no matter what you throw at it. It's an AUS8 blade steel too, which in my opinion, is better than the 8CR steels. They are damn hard to beat for the price.

Well said!! Absolutely agree I have a orange d2 version I've had since the d2 came out. I may still be carrying a chris reeves umnumzaan, microtech stitch or LUDT but I always have my rat1 too. I climb trees for a living and I'm constantly cutting rope, small limbs, small trees/underbrush. Like I'm hard on it and don't even take care of it like I should but it only has 1 tiny rust spot where on the bottom of the blade. I've literally used the spine to hit stuff, pryed knots that I should not have done but it still locks up as solid as ever and is super smooth. I occasionally use a cold steel sr1 lite but I can damn near do every I can with that with the lighter rat 1.

need to veiw the test of the rats in d2. they are not even close to the aus8 steel ones. the lack performance severely compared to the aus8. i buy mostly d2 steel knives. but afterlooking up the rat in d2 i went aus8 and couldnt be happier. came for the factory so sharp i could shave dry with it. split hairs with me holding just the end of the hair. check it out.

    • @Deadtileyedie
      @Deadtileyedie 3 года назад

@@bigsean2473 I don't know what video your talking about but the d2 actually had almost 2x the edge retention on the rope cutting test. I've personally skinned deer with both my rats a d2 and older aus 8 I had just sharpend both and after skinning a whitetail with both you could still cut paper with the d2 rat the aus8 definitely still had a working edge and it does have the benefit of being stainless steel and ease of sharping but as far as edge retention goes the d2 rats are definitely superior.

Hands down Ka-bar Dozier. Lightweight, thick enough blade stock, simple construction, big pivot screw (see those T5s on Buck Vantage?), natural ergonomics, strong lock-back, right under $20, AUS-8 steel (for the price, not bad). Despite the single sided thumb stud, you just don't find a design flaw in it.

I like the older style pocket knives best and they probably last much longer also. I have some of the older style knives and love them, including the one which was issued to me while in the Air Force yand that knife is very functional even though I don't have the use of the parachute blade any longer. Some of the ones you showed does look nice and would interest me, but I have too many knives already, but they would please some people.

I'm really curious as to what spyderco does regarding the heat treat of their 8Cr steel. Got my dad a meadowlark 2 about 8 months ago as an edc work knife. The edge is holding up far better than I would have expected from 8Cr or Aus 8 (based on experience with other makers using the same materials). A weekly session on the strop and every 2 months or so a couple passes on a sharpmaker and it's back to shaving sharp. I'm really impressed by the performance of what is generally considered a rather pedestrian material.

Man this is a damn good one and probably would be one of the best actions on the list and ergos are damn sure up there for me atleast. Good call!!! Even the ruike p801 is a great one for the list. I did find ruikes14c28n to not hold a edge as good as some other 14c28n I've had. But definitely good and takes a crazy edge. Better than the same ol d2 though. Even though I actually really like d2 in this price range regardless of what people think.

Got an Ontario RAT 2 as recommended in the video. Well made, but the lackluster sharpness of the D2 blade was disappointing. The absence of a sharpening choil doesn’t help matters as it prevents a complete edge.

I know this video is a year old now, but if anyone is still scrolling the comments, I'd have put the Kershaw Tension on this list. It's only $15 bucks but performs like a knife that costs 4x as much. I own dozens of knives from Buck, Gerber, Spyderco, CRKT, Cold Steel, etc, but for the last 3 years my Tension has had more pocket/ actual work time than all the others combined. Admittedly, it doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, which would have driven the price up, but it's quite possibly the best "working man's" knife I've ever owned. G10 handle scales, bronze phosphorus washers, fully ambidextrous opening and carry, plus buttery smooth action once it's broken in. Only drawback is 8cr13 steel doesn't hold an edge forever, but Kershaw does good heat treatments so it lasts as well as can be expected. I spend less than a minute sharpening it once a month or so and it goes back to arm hair shaving sharp again with little effort.

hey @KnifeCenter would it be possible to do a similar lineup but for 2 hand open? in germany there are regulations in place that prevent you from handling 1hand opening AND locking knives. flippers are completely banned. thats why many slipjoint knives with 2hand opening are popular. any options you can reccommend? the buck bantam without a thumbstud would be an example. greetings from germany

They don't sell Land products, but yeah, I have one and it's a great knife. Mine is the black G10 version. 12C27 is an excellent budget steel, that out performs much of the M390 that companies are putting out with low rockwell numbers. The action is silky smooth, and I call it my poor mans Sebenza. Great knife for sure.

    • @antimatter4733

@@timbo4374 I'm pretty sure that m390 would have to not be hardened to be out performed by 12c27, not 1 or 2 Rockwell below recommended hardness

I looked at the Zancudo and the Rat 1 as possible beater knives, but I realized two things.
    1) I have too many knives to justify a beater knife
    2) I am too much of a klutz to carry a liner or frame lock.
