It's not all about the knife. It's also about how well the knife company treats you. I left my Busse Combat Knife on top of my car. It fell off on the highway and got run over by a big truck. Cut up the sheath and slightly damaged the blade. Busse paid for delivery back and forth through the mail, no charge to me, fixed it all, and coated the Infi steel, all no charge. Now that is customer service! I'm a customer for life. They are made in Ohio.

Steel Will Roamer looks absolutely amazing. The bright orange TPE handle look great and comfy. Over the time i begun to appreciate striking colors on the "survival" knives. To not loose the knife or be able to find him quickly is great. The steel is adequated to the intended use and the construction looks very solid. The blade looks just big enough to be useful for smaller and bigger tasks.

The Finnish Terävä knives, like the various Jääkkäripuukkos or the Skrama have made a huge impression in the European knife community recently. All well below 100$/€. I had a Jääkkäripuukko 140 with me on an 8 day hike through the Scottish Highlands this summer. It's awesome. Absolutely indestructible.

I was a crew chief on Huey and first generation Black Hawks. We were issued what they called "aircraft crewman survival knives". They were mounted on our survival vests. Kind of like the little brother of the Marine K-BAR. You could also wear it on your belt. They had teeth on the spine of the knife, which you might think was for sawing wood in a survival situation. Actually the teeth, which faced toward the handle was there for punching through the skin of a helicopter, which was easy enough to do, and pulling back with pressure, cut an escape hole to squeeze out of. Seems kind of far fetched and thank God I never had to use it for that. Sawing wood with it is an exercise in futility.?
But I got so attached to this knife with its stacked leather handle, flat pommel to use for banging on things and sharpening stone in the sheath, that I carried it into civilian life as a pipeline maintenance worker and EDC. Rarely did a day go by and I didn't use it for something. It was an excellent camp knife and I always had one to use in the woods. Camillus made the blades, but if you carry one of these every day, as I did, make sure your sheath has the metal end on it or the point will eventually work its way through the leather and could pose a problem. I still have my original issue for sentimental value, as well as a newer one. With a six inch long, thick blade, it has about one inch of flat untoothed spine that can be used to spark a fire starting rod. I'm surprised I have not seen one of these affordable, durable knives reviewed.

Teeth or a scalloped edge are also helpful for cutting rope, webbing, twine, cord, etc. Particularly those newer tough but slippery Polypropylene ones. Ever tried to cut braided fishing line with a blunt pair of scissors.

DCA, you're a Godsend. Just days ago a freind asked me about knives that qualify as a medium survival knife. Had no Clue that the Esee 6 with the new sculpted handles would be so expensive by the time they hit my country. As the "Knife guy" in my circle, I can just hand him this video. Already own #4 on this list. Thanks for talking about carbon vs. stainless, steel types and why you want a protected choil or how hands can slip onto the blade under the extremes . Cheers brother, you saved me hours of chats and reco's.

The more that I follow your reviews the more I appreciate your use of technical industry standard terms in this genre relating to construction, materials, fit & & finish, ergonomics & intended usage & your factual, fluent, flowing diction. I consider your job here as requiring much research & preparation, which I admire. The one thing I think about when perusing your site, is how does the management maintain composure when storing that much inventory, & how saleable will all of those different style & usage designs be!!! Keep up the good work & let your superiors know how much we appreciate your testimony!!!

I do love the having the pocket on the sheath for the Sharpener and Ferrocerium Rod with my Schrade F37 (same as sheath on your F52M)! When I bought mine on Amazon, I didn't notice on the lower part of the page that it did say it comes with the sharpener and ferro rod and was so happy it did when it arrived, as the F52M was no longer available when I had the money for it. So thank you for that addition, Schrade!!

When I use the longer blade knives Like 6" and up, I do love having both ends of the handle with that drop to help prevent the knife sliding into or out of my hand and that extra finger slot on the blade itself at the handle. With something like the Morakniv Companion (4" blade) I don't want that extra finger slot on the blade, but still like to have those drop points on both ends of the handle.

Many, many years ago, I went through a military E&E school where they taught us how to make a spear with shroud line (paracord). The trick they used to keep from losing the knife was to use a tether, turning the spear into a harpoon. Yeah, it was a stretch, but it was the sixties.

My take on it, I don't care for hollow grinds much any more as a whole. It's like a way to make a less than good blade profile and making it a good slicer but that is about it. Unless it's a shallow hollow grind, user functionality and performance is affected because there just isn't as much control. My preferred are flat grinds. I feel they offer better control and a more robust build.

When kicking around in the woods I probably overkill it. I carry a Gerber Prodigy if not hunting Buck 119 when hunting. D2 RAT 1 Or Benchmade 940 in back pocket, old carbon boker camp knife in one pocket lanyarded but clipped to belt loop and leatherman OHT on my belt. I'll typically also have a butt pack on if leaving camp and there is a buck 110 in there. That boker sees most of the use since it is just really handy and the sheep foot style blade is just super handy.

I own a Gerber Prodigy straight blade ( I hate serrations) and it is the best knife for all purposes in my collection. Incredibly tough (look up Gerber Strong Arm destruction tests for reference) and easy to sharpen and just solid. It also comes with a awesome sheath which is where most knife makers cut cost, Gerber didnt.

I have an older bear Grylls. A buddy forget his guy knife in his truck on a hunt last month, and gut his buck with it, he was amazed how sharp it was. I gave my grandson a Gerber gut folder for his birthday, and he loves it. Giving my son and son in law the same one for Christmas.

Thank you for the Very informative review. All excellent choices for sure. I would add one more, the Cudeman MT5 Survival Fixed Knife 4.25" BOHLER N695 Steel. I got this one for just under $100, and it's an excellent outdoor/survival blade.

I have the BK-2 knife and love it and also have two other knives from KA-BAR and think they are a great company. I don't have the Buck knife you showed, but do have the 119 and 120, along with a 110 folding knife from their company and love all of them.

@@bernhard7658 yes, I agree. I have the MT-5 myself. The only reason I like Joker better is because they have several options with 14c28n Sandvik steel. This just happens to be my preferred steel because it easily takes an incredibly keen edge.

    Love that Condor craftsmanship!
Always carried Bucks and/or Ka-Bars in my 56 years, but decided to pick up a Batonata from Condor when I saw Joe Flowers swingin' one around.
Would love one of those Python machetes that Joe designed, that thing has a bit o' charisma in my opinion, my meat hooks must have!!

Cool I learned that the finger notch is called a 'choil' and "pommel". I own lots of knives, mostly pocket knives with a few straight blades. Recently I purchased three survival knives: APO-1S ($160), APO-1T ($250), & the Gerber Gear Ultimate Knife at a steal of a price for $26. Most of my knives are $50 or less and I love micarta handles and stone wash. I really like that rotating clip on the sheath for the Ruike Jager, I have smaller hands so that might be an excellent stainless steel. I doubt I would split wood with it. The Roamer looks really good, I love the orange color. Those holes are useful for a safety tie to your hand or to your body if you're reaching down to cut something and if there's a possibility of dropping it down a hole, off a cliff scenario, drop into deep or fast moving water or mud.

Excellent video on "camping knives". I say this because "survival" cannot the planned, if your planning it it's not survival it's camping, and unless you are going to carry one of these as your edc, you won't have it when the need for survival presents itself. The knife that you are going to use for survival is the knife you have when you need a knife for survival.

One thing to remember "you can use a big knife to do most things a small knife can do, but you can't use a small knife to do what a big knife will do". Food for thought

So you could clean a fish or squirrel with a big knife? I've been collecting knives since the 80's, I'm 59, and I'd rather have a small/medium sized knife. Mostly because I do not chop or batton with a knife. I use a tomahawk. Plus in a survival situation, do as little work as possible, so you are not burning carbs you cannot replace.

Old hickory cutlery are damn good too. price wise, better than most of the knives on this list. wouldnt use them for heavier jobs though, due to thin blade.nice review, agree with it. absolutely agree with "sharpened prybar" in case of bk2. own one for few years now, i can guarantee you that it'll survive apocalypse even if you dont :P . its quite heavy too. love it despite its flaws. would add bk7 or 9 on list (not under 100 though) .
