    Hey Mike, some insight for you in case you're interested: rails (or roads) going from residental zones can go 15 units in which a valid destination (essentially the residents' workplace) is searched for. anything longer than that will not register and the residental zone as result won't develop. Valid destinations are C- and I-Zones, PD, FD and an open Stadium (not the closed one for whatever reason).

    SimCity was the first game I bought for Super Nintendo. I received my SNES - with Super Mario World as the pack-in game - for Christmas 1992, and a few days later I went into town with my dad and bought SimCity. For a month, those were the only two games I had, so many of the long winter evenings throughout January '93 were spent trying to build the best city I could. I never made it to megalopolis, that's for certain, but I came up with some places I was very happy with. I played it with the aim of constructing something that was beautiful to my eye, rather than intending purely to get the largest population I could. The game has its flaws and its peculiarities, that's for sure, but it still occupies a special place in my memories.
    This epic playthrough kept me company all day while I worked, and the only shame is that now Mike has achieved his 500K population goal, I suppose it's unlikely we'll see him tackle SimCity again, at least not this version. I could honestly be happy watching more cities rise from nothing to greatness, accompanied by Mike's musings and anecdotes! 😊

    This awakens early memories of unpacking my S-NES and settling in on this game for the whole night. Megalopolis is quite the challenge, even if most of the levels just happen on their own. Good luck. And I already see rails over roads. Hear that is a good tactic. (Also once read that Los Angeles was started as a rails community where everyone walked, maybe biked and used trains. No cars. But... Big Oil caught wind, moved in, bullied for control and bulldozed almost the entire influence of rail travel into the ground. Survivors of that early idea can still be found to this day. Public rails in the middle of a few miles of freeways.) And isn't it amazing to think that this game was made exclusively for the S-NES. That's why it runs so well with few slow down issues, despite the many calculations going on in the background. After all, they tried for a more traditional port of Sim City 2000 to the PlayStation. What a train wreck that was.
    Favorite memory: (Using the money code... as *I* can't achieve it any other way.) Using that near infinite amount of cash to build up the city, keeping crime to 0, taxes to 0, fire, bla-bla-bla to perfection... and STILL getting community feedback. Like one old giezer was unhappy that he couldn't pay taxes! Kind of felt like hitting a practically unreachable event when I saw that. (No way to challenge Mike to uncover that one.)

    Even though i love the SNES, knowing and playing SimCity on the PC since decades, the SNES version is significantly inferior. It is amazing that they managed to port that game in the first place, and that they were able to make it into what it is, but after several tries, i never enjoyed playing it.
    It has its charm, but if i would want to play the old SimCity, i would never think about playing it on the SNES.

    a Cities Skylines 1 stream would be hilarious I can already tell 😂😂

  • @JoshuaDemersProductions
    @JoshuaDemersProductions 5 месяцев назад +1

    I've been playing since the PC game came out. I'm a couple hours in and I'm not sure if it's been figured out by anyone else by the end of this stream, so I'll say it. The less rails, the less density. If you notice when the rails connected, the buildings would build up way bigger and even connect some together. You could see the parking lots and such too. With just the single rail touching each zone, they don't get very big and never connect together into the largest buildings. Basically, the better the traffic routing, the bigger the capacity. I can't remember if 4X4 zones connect together like the 2X1's anymore. Finally, a few residential's got put together to see if they'll connect. Oh wait, there's not enough rail to find out, or to ever make the megalopolis this way.

    • @JoshuaDemersProductions
      @JoshuaDemersProductions 5 месяцев назад +1

      Oh yeah, and I think what's going on with the "random" power outages is this: With the limited rails, the capacities of each zone is limited and not as desirable either. When these residential zones begin flashing, it is when they are partially filled with small houses. It may be sort of a limbo between vacant and almost vacant, before they all disappear and it just becomes a blank. There is a way to check the power plant's output. You can select the magnifying lens, then one of the power plants on the map and it will show what's up so you can plan properly when to build new ones. They only last 50 years if I remember correctly.

    • @JoshuaDemersProductions
      @JoshuaDemersProductions 5 месяцев назад +1

      I don't mean to keep adding, but I believe the idea behind not having water to put a seaport is to add to the challenge of not having a large industrial ability in the long run, forcing you to rely on commercial which takes longer to get going at a much greater expense. I don't think it's broken. The traffic tiles reach three tiles in each direction in SC2K, so I imagine it's the same in this game. That's why you can get away with one road or rail per zone, properly spaced.
      I just bought SC3K for my PC a couple months ago, being my first time playing it after watching it here. Same with Dome Keeper, I had to get that one too! Despite enjoying the complexity and personality of SC2K and SC3K, this stream reminds me of the simpler times that were pretty amazing too. I never cared about the SNES version back then, but my PC game is long gone, however I've got SNES rom and an emulator. I'm going to load up and play this myself after I get done with the rest of this stream to see if I can beat this scenario myself. I hope these comments are useful instead of deleted.

    • @whickervision742
      @whickervision742 5 месяцев назад

      Sad to say little of what you said is how SimCity 1 works.
      Sea Port does not need to be built on water. Neither Sea Port nor Airport needs power, either. Unpowered, they don't launch their vehicles, which makes a safer, but more boring, city.

    • @whickervision742
      @whickervision742 5 месяцев назад +1

      Power plants last forever in SC1. Rails are the same as roads except they cost twice as much to buy and to maintain, but do not cause traffic. A sim leaving a R zone travels down a road or rail about 20 tiles looking for a zone that is not of its own type. I zones just need one road or rail piece touching because of a bug or balancing hack. C zones can travel to another C zone as well as any other zone.
      A complicated flood fill like algorithm determines if a zone tile is powered or not. It starts at where the first power plant is located. Subsequent power plants don't even need power lines connected. Yes when R zones remove houses they inexplicably get set to unpowered until the power line path finding hits it again, which can take months. There are bugs in the power line routine where zones can get missed or double counted, especially in large complicated cities. Power line tiles themselves each consume power like developed zone tiles, which is baffling.

    • @JoshuaDemersProductions
      @JoshuaDemersProductions 5 месяцев назад

      @@whickervision742 I know the seaport doesn't need water, but I figured it would just reduce it's boost to Industry, like setting a water well/pump away from water. I guess the game is older than I remember, or the PC game was more "realistic" from SNES than anyone notices.

    just finished my third playthrough ov Dragons Dogma 2. normally I don't buy a game till its been out a year. but I feel in love with the first one and bought the hype ov 'he got to fulfill his vision'. director has said in interviews that the first game was rushed and there was cut content and 2 was his 'full vision ov his game world'
    director ov the game is a goddamned liar. its the exact same game with better graffics. 3 tit sliders for character creation. cat people to increase sales with a certain part of the population...
    worst yet? its not finished. its very clearly not finished. i know you don't like cutsceans and plot and such but I am a roleplayer so I am deeply engrossed in lore, story, plot, and immersion. i found DD2 lacking in that regard. gameplay is 10/10. graffics are stunning and engaging. world exploring is fun. story 1/10. plot 1/10. quest 2/10. I'm torn. i want to like the game but.... there is no way I can say its finished. the story is wrote by a drunk toddler who is petting their cat.
    sad rule in modern gaming. 'dont buy anything until it goes on sale the second time after launch' that way you have time for the bugs to be worked out and I don't know maybe after a year or two ov release the game will be finished.
    thanks for keeping me company old man. your hatred keeps me warm in the winter.

    So many hours I put on this game as a kid. I remember doing the money cheat on accident 😆.

      There are a lot of inputs you have to put in specifically to do that. I doubt it was an accident

      @@mikematei It really was an accident I swear. It was before the internet. Or before I knew how to use it.
