watching this in it's entirety, the music, the sound effects, the levels... it really takes me back. This game felt like an incredible adventure of discovery when I was younger. I just love it.
This game was very immersive in it's time. I remember playing this game an entire summertime and still not being able to finish it. Obviously with no maps or internet back in the day this game was a hard task. Now, playing it online or on my emulator xbox I can finish this in less than an hour but it's still just as immersive with the dark background and music. What a great game.
The reason that 255 is the max for missles and rupees is because that's the max value that can be held in a single byte. You can trust me, I'm a professional computer nerd.
He did it. He actually did it! This is my alltime favorite game and I never thought you would do a playthrough. The way you talk about Zelda is how I think of this game, so it's very cool to see you go through it. Also: don't worry, I've been playing it since the 80s and have never beaten it in less than five hours.
When I was 4 years old, I was actually afraid to play this game, especially without any map or any other references. I had no idea what I was doing, and it's one of my earliest experiences of feeling disturbed.
Since you were a bit confused about the names of there various regions in Metroid 1, here is a quick break down. The important thing to not is that when you change regions, the music changes too. So if the music didn't change, you are still in the same region, even if the tileset has changed. Brinstar ~ This is the starting area. Itr contains the blue stone area, the yellow stone area, as well as the green brick area Kraid's Lair ~ Also called hideout one. A grey brickwork area, interspersed with light blue brick rooms. This area is also known for having awesome and haunting theme music. Krair makes his home here (duh), but this is before he started drinking milk to grow up big and strong Norfair ~ This area has orange brick rooms, red stone rooms and violet bubble rooms, but this is only half the story. Even in the first game, Norfair was split into upper and lower regions, but in this game they count as being trhe same region. Lower Norfair has pink stone area, green bubble area, and red/purple combo rooms. Lower Norfair is also home to some of the best items in the game; the wave beam, and the screw attack Ridley's Lair ~ Also called hideout two. This region has elaborate magenta stonework, mixed with green brick rooms, and purple tile rooms. This is where Ridley makes his home (once again, duh). Although this region is labeled hideout two, I always found Ridley to be easier to beat, even without cheese strats Tourian ~ Grey futuristic pipework rooms define this region. This is the end game region where the Metroids live. The penultimate room contains Mother Brain and her Zebetite life support system, and Rinka projectors + gun turret defense systems. Kill Mother Brain to gasin access to the final room. The escape shaft you must race up to finish the game. I can't even imagine how much of my brain space is permanently reserved for holdinhg this data. Now your brain can do the same. Peace Mike, keep up the excellent content.
Too bad Mike has the memory of a goldfish. It amazes me sometimes watching him not remember something that happened 5min ago in the game lol. Never played the original Metroid, playing Super Metroid now. I guess its planet Zebes in both games
One of my favorite memories as a kid, was one summer day going to my friend's down the street and we played Metroid and drank 7-Up til we 'conquered' the game!
Mike, I have a question for you. You play on crt TVs correct? And if so, how do you split the A/V signal to stream on a PC and play on TV at the same time? I'd like to start streaming my game room collection for fun, but I only play my classic console games on crt. Zero input lag...
Just saying the good old days are back when people play the classic games I'm sick and tired of always installing games on my Xbox One X in my PS4 Pro mic keep up the good work man still love you peace out
Crazy how as a kid this game looked so cool and it still does, don't get me wrong but I can't get out of my mind nowadays how the background is just a black abyss and it's hard not to think about, knowing how much cooler this game actually looks with a background! 🙈
It amazes me how people can remember where everything is and where to go in this game after all these years. Ive been lost as fuck replaying it on the nes mini
You have to beat it in under an hour to get the best ending, which is Samus in a bikini. What you got was the second best ending which allows you to wear the Justin Bailey Suit....
Time to take a break from the Zelda and Zelda II streams.... Metroid was my first ever NES game, i bought the system in either late '86 or early '87 (well my parents did). My NES (which i still have, and it works), didn't come with Super Mario but the NES Player's Guide, so they let me choose a free game (i don't think i was supposed to), so i chose Metroid. Still have the box, innards, everything. Looking forward to watching this one !
Since were saying queef so much here, queef is the single funniest word in the english language. Also how do you pluralize queef? Is it queefs, or queeves? Queefy queeftacular queefs queefing queefable queefaliciousness. Also, slit, gash, snatch? These are all so crass (mainly gash). I much prefer something sweeter and more endearing. How about "squish mitten"? That's my personal favorite term. Funny, descriptive, adorable, and has never (as of yet) been found offensive by any of the wonderful girls that have been willing to share the joys of their squish mittens with me. Squish Mittens FTW!!!
Soooo much memory overload watching this game, back in the day you weren't cool unless you played Metroid with the Justin Bailey _____ code revealing Samus's face and that badass freeze beam, it was like a right of passage for nerds. Great stream Mike.
I love the super Nintendo because the games are games I can actually beat. When I try to play things like Metroid I could never get through them on the NES.
Jaleel's like "I'm sick of everyone thinking that's the only thing I ever did fuck coming back and doing it again" Yeah there won't be a new 3's company since both John Ritter and Don Knotts have passed and they're both such legends even doing a complete reboot of the series would piss off too many people and would probably end the careers of everyone involved.
Mike I'm your age. Love to see you play karnov, super ghouls and ghost, bionic commando, shining force 1 & 2, super r-type, castlevania on xbox(original xbox), dante's inferno ps2. I have more, just braindead right now.
It's frustrating watching Mike get a metroid on him, then go into a ball, plant the bombs, and then move before they go off, then complain that he can't get them off him. It's like "stop moving fucker!"
Mike did you know there is an alternative code for the Zero Suit besides Justin Bailey? Entering it allows you to play Zero Suit Samus but with no upgrades
watching this in it's entirety, the music, the sound effects, the levels... it really takes me back. This game felt like an incredible adventure of discovery when I was younger. I just love it.
Its funny. I never beat this game without the justin Bailey cheat, but it was one of my favorite games as a kid. Just an amazing game all around.
This game was very immersive in it's time. I remember playing this game an entire summertime and still not being able to finish it. I got an ad for liposuction before this video lol

Awesome breakdown man, thankyou. This makes me want to look into the lore of the NES Metroid game further.

Nothin like coming off a night shift and not being able to sleep!! Thanks Mike for the entertainment, always appreciated

I use a pvm monitor. The consoles are hooked up with rgb.
@@mikematei Thanks much! Guess I'll have to look into some rgb mods. 👍
My top five games Mike has nightmares about.
1. Bart's Nightmare
2. Kings Knight
3.Wizard Of Oz
4. Little Nemo
5. The Goonies 2
good list.
Just saying the good old days are back when people play the classic games I'm sick and tired of always installing games on my Xbox One X in my PS4 Pro mic keep up the good work man still love you peace out
I remember playing this game as a six year old, winter 1989, nyc. It felt like I entered another world. It changed my horizons for sure.
I have a confession. Ive never played metroid. Its the ONE "famous" nes game I have no experience with. that has to change one day.
Its a good game
To kill Mother Brain, It takes two in the pink, one in stink. Samus gets it.
yeah rockets started to irk pretty quick
Imagine link needing 5 bombs per wall hole..
Crazy how as a kid this game looked so cool and it still does, don't get me wrong but I can't get out of my mind nowadays how the background is just a black abyss and it's hard not to think about, knowing how much cooler this game actually looks with a background! 🙈
This is both simultaneously extremely entertaining and extremely frustrating to watch.
Ahhh music to fall asleep by. 8 bit sound was so amazing.
Metroid was one of the NES games that made me a gamer for life as a Nintendo kid.
It amazes me how people can remember where everything is and where to go in this game after all these years. Ive been lost as fuck replaying it on the nes mini
I used to watch Video Power every morning before school, when it was on. The other show was Saved By the Bell (RIP Screech). Wow, memories.
SWEEEET!!!! I've been hoping for this one
Probably one of the best NES games. Good stuff Mike.
Best streamer
With Long Shlong 🙏🙏🙏
I was 9 years old when I learned the Mother Brain was actually a heart and she commanded an army of evil Spaghettio's.
Love this stream! Such an amazing game. Best soundtrack too!
You have to beat it in under an hour to get the best ending, which is Samus in a bikini. What you got was the second best ending which allows you to wear the Justin Bailey Suit....
Did the guy ever get his shiny Pokemon after all those resets?
I am that guy, and yes I did, about a year ago! It was a shiny Celebi in Crystal on the 3DS Virtual Console! It took me forever!!!!!
@@broomhatter3450 Sweet! Congrats!
you know what's funny, I remember reading the instruction booklet back in the day and it clearly referred to Samus as "he" several times.
Have always loved your streams Mike!

Clunge is my all time fave.
Thank you for teaching me about this game now I can get somewhere actually
Next.... Kid Icarus!
That's my favorite classic Nintendo game.. I've never beat it, its a tough one but love it
@@HiNRGboy I did not do that as a child. But played it a few years ago and it took me 2 sessions then I beat it :)
Soooo much memory overload watching this game, back in the day you weren't cool unless you played Metroid with the Justin Bailey _____ code revealing Samus's face and that badass freeze beam, it was like a right of passage for nerds.
Great stream Mike.
Right? I know I beat it with the code and played it alot with and without the code. I think I beat it without the code too but I'm not sure now.
10 seconds in, 1st spoiler... Love it!
freeze em and go! lmao 1 18 minutes in lol
I know Metroid came in a silver/grey box but is it considered to be a “black box” game?
@Drew Taylor now 17 launch titles is a way to introduce a console.
779 1:42:11. Mike raps the golden girls theme
Wish I'd seen this live, so I could tell Mike that Metroid is a girl.
Samus is a girl. I don’t know what Metroid are
Wait, WHAT??
@@alexandarjelenic2880 yea that’s what makes the joke better fool
Have you played the Famicom Disk System version, the alarm during the escape sequence is kinda annoying.
Playback Speed at 2x to feel what it’s like to chew 5 Gum
u should do a playthrough of perfect dark on n64.
I know, but only with auto-aim off.
Favorite game of all time. Love the streams mike!
An all-time classic. Still fun to play on portable while the time passes.
Nice! Fantastic classic game. 👍
The kraid music makes me stiff, with nostalgia.
Where the hell is Metroid Prime 4. Seriously, what's up with that?
Hey Mike, did you do a Metroid Fusion playthrough ? I think that's the best 2D version of them all.
Mike now that you are on a new chapter in life, I think you should rebrand yourself as Rex Matei. Its such a rad name. Please consider seriously.
Max Power
That was really fun stream 😆👍
I still can't believe that they didn't put save states in this game. How the hell can they expect anyone to beat this in one go for the first time.
I love the super Nintendo because the games are games I can actually beat. When I try to play things like Metroid I could never get through them on the NES.
NES games were brutal. Not only is Mike good at games, he's also a masochist.
Now for the metroid no hits playthru...... i demand it! haha
"Did you know Metroid was a girl?" .... lol
Chat: what times do you stream?
Mike: basically any random hour I feel like at any given moment. Be prepared fuckers!
Chat: metroid's a girl :D
this was my Great Great Great Grandmother's very favorite game
After you beat this game try to beat it under an hour. It is a good thing to do when speed running.
Such a great game! I've only beaten the snes version which is tough but this is on another level. 👍
I always use the ice beam to freeze the donuts.
Anyone played Metroid Mother on NES, Its a hack I guess but it gives you a map and there is a few better things it did, I really enjoyed it
Had this as a kid. I just ran around and had no clue what to do.
when did Mike start saying "Yo"?
Probably been hanging in the 'hood in South New Jersey/North Philly
that craid energy tank is a pain to get. i think nintendo power told you that back in the day
I've never been too hot at metroid. Fun game though. Either this or Fusion is my fav
Thank you beaming butt for the sub !
Blue area is Crateria, Green is Brinstar I thought
Missiles > Rockets
255/6 is popular because it's an 8-bit system!
Never played this one. Is it on the switch online thing?. No map sounds brutal
Metraooooood!!! 😃
Such a fun and satisfying game to beat. Super Metroid too…even more phenomenal.
Haha! “Sushi Queef”
778 @1:25:37 Kraid Music
This game is easily found online if you've never finished it.
Is this the super brothers?
Mike I'm your age. Love to see you play karnov, super ghouls and ghost, bionic commando, shining force 1 & 2, super r-type, castlevania on xbox(original xbox), dante's inferno ps2. I have more, just braindead right now.
can't wait for super metroid
You da man, Mike.
Will you make more reviews Mike ? you top NES video was GREAT! and loved the Zelda Minish Cap
The first metroid, on NES... the game that SUCKS to play but looks amazing when watching someone else play.
Can you play NES Rambo at some time please. I really enjoy your play throughs dude.
Its so sad. I've owned this game for about 15 years now and never played. I need to bust out my old nes collection from when i was collecting haha
Ain’t no spoilers Samus been a girl since 86 . What is ure pb?
Penut butter and jam?
Did you know that Samus is a Metroid?
1:11:55 Mike is having a stroke... x"D
Stream the punisher, psi ops, or manhunt for ps2

It's frustrating watching Mike get a metroid on him, then go into a ball, plant the bombs, and then move before they go off, then complain that he can't get them off him. It's like "stop moving fucker!"

The shots sound reminds me a dolphin speaking lol
You have a great imagination.
my fav nes game is action 52 lol
personally i would not mind if he came back to voice a certain blue hedgehog lol
Try the code Justin Bailey
Super Metroid is my jam. Yet, the first one is a monumental title for it's time.
mike can you check out William Shatners Tek War for PC its from 1995 PLEASE
Play a metroid ranodmizer
No
Mike did you know there is an alternative code for the Zero Suit besides Justin Bailey?
Entering it allows you to play Zero Suit Samus but with no upgrades
The password is
000000 000020
000000 000020
Super simple.
Hopefully we get Prime 4 before the end of the century smh.
Holy shit, Samus is a girl. The whole series is ruined for me now,,, lulz
Nah man. Samus is a dude in a Bikini. No worries ;-)
