It’s weird how I became a fan. I got dragged to a show at the Nokia theater in 07. My girlfriend at the time rip knew how much of a guitar nerd for blues I am so she kept it all secret and knew I’d actually enjoy it. I went in there thinking I was going to hear your body is a wonderland for 2 hours. She knew I’d have a strong reaction. Man that night I was like damn I see Albert king, bb, I see Clapton, and obviously Stevie. But most of all I see Mayer. He takes little phrases and accents from the legends and makes his own flavor. Now all these years later I’m still teaching students Mayer licks and solos. If you ever get the chance to see John live do it. I’m 29 now and still all these years later the man inspires me
@@JoshOwensMusic I know, only thing I wish about the DVD is that they would have put the entire set. There was 25 minutes or more of jamming that the dvd didn’t show
@@ericajohnson7535 made me sad he didn’t even bring the “black 1” out for gravity or his first Strat for slow dancing, during this recent sob rock tour. Let me tell you that *EVERY* guitar solo John does, is _Sick_ I mean, have you seen him so a solo on just ONE tone, he's extraordinarily amazing. Truly talented/ gifted.
One of my favorite guitarist keeping the blues alive. Im 59 years old and i have been playing blues on the harmonica for over 40yrs and I love jamming with John Mayer.
I don't think there's a definitive full potential when it comes to John It would hold true for artists who have as John would put it, done "growing" playing with the grateful dead couldn't have done him any harm and when it comes to guitaring, I say the best is yet to come
I see it more as him breaking new ceiling every few years. I have my own fun way of classifying guitar players (strictly my opinion, so don't have to agree), and it's as follows: Crossroads 2003 and Any Given Thursday gave him a master class status, Continuum/WTLI/JMTrio gave him grand master recognition, and once he started touring with the Dead (approval of living legends), he has now achieved a senior grand master recognition. The highest honor after that, in my own guitar player classification, is the living legends, so i'll def be looking out for Mayer to get there lol
Yeah he has been favouring his sunburst the last few years, and yeah he has the PRS Super-eagle and his new PRS-strat thingy, but I still think this guitar is the one that sounds the best. It might be that his sound was tailored around it, or that his playing was, or it might just be my imagination. Still, I think it sounds the best in just about all recordings where he uses different guitars.
Jim Rasch there is a video on RUclips a mini documentery about 'the black one.' In it he says that this guitar completely defined the sound of all of Continuum.

Why would I listen to this when I have heard pretty much everything by Clapton? Has this guy contributed anything to guitar playing? I doubt that. Most simple pentatonic. From my point of view, he just capitalises on Clapton’s legacy.

you lucky son of a bitch
I can't imagine getting dragged to see one of the greatest recorded live performances in recent history. Must have been unreal.
I cannot imagine your surprise at the trio kicking in. Who did you think I was is such a damn banger..
He has killer phrasing. Just incredible.
His phrasing never ends! I Saw him live back in 2019 and every minute of every solo Was a treat.
ugh its crazy how much better his strat tone is compared to his silver sky. i miss it so much.
Silver Sky just like all PRS's have no personality -- just perfect even tone. Even the quack is like.... predictable.

Love his iconic strat tone

Not throwing shade but of all instruments to play why a harmonica
I don't think we've ever seen John play to his full potential. Especially over the last few years he's humbled down a bit
Well, maybe he played in Continuum and in Where The Light Is. I don't know, he is so fucking good

to me his best playing is with the trio he had, john, steve, pino.
Awesome!
Teasing his new song "Helpless" at 0:15 :)
how?
Yeah I don't hear it
the solo is in the same key, and some licks are played in Helpless but i'm not sure that he was "teasing" the track on purpose
bluescoloredmusic u mean an Albert king guitar lick that him and every other blues guitarist use hahaha
More of a coincidence in my opinion
Covered in rain best solo ever.
I saw him for the first time tonight and was a lot better than I expected
A sound that the Silver Sky will never achieve...
amazing quality! I would've loved to watch the whole song though

Have to agree with you there. I didn't think the PRS strat thing compares to this and his '64 sunburst, tonewise at least.
i love his 63/64 strat. it has a beautiful sound. he used it for city love at crossroads.

So you dont hear the same songs over and over by clapton. Have some variety
I hate his guitar solo style. Way too many stop a start moments. No fluidity to his playing.
