Introducing the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe! It’s the 4 door edition of the 4 Series, and Mat’s on hand to see if this ‘coupe’ 4-door has enough to convince you to spend a bit extra and choose it instead of the 3 Series!
Starting with the exterior design, as you’d expect there’s a sloping roof from the back seats through to the rear, and a number of minor (yet oh-so-good) features that stand it out compared to the 3 Series, such as frameless door windows at the back! Otherwise, the design is largely reminiscent of the regular 4 Series.
Under the bonnet, it’s no surprise that there isn’t much to separate either car. If you get your hands on the M440i edition, as we have here, you’ll find a 3-litre turbo straight-six under the bonnet that can deliver 374hp.
So there’s no denying it looks great, and the performance is more than adequate, but should you really choose one when the starting price is £9,000 more than what you’d pay for an entry-level 3 Series?! You’d better stick with Mat and find out for yourself!

doesn't make sense let the 2, 4, and 8 series be coupe or convertible only. sedans should be 3,5, or 7 series only

I think that while they could have done without it, the grille looks fine with a number plate on, especially a long European-style plate.

The grill looks better when you cover it up with a licence plate. Says everything. BMW’s, for the most part, look like crap.
In the old generation, you were like “ok I’ll pay the extra cause the 440GC looks a bit better than the 340i.” But this time around I’m like “yeah so I’ll save 10k and get the cheaper 340 cause it looks 100x better”
I have the 2020 m340i, highly recommended. Best car I’ve owned… better than the 2018 m4

I've got to say, the new grille grew on me. I saw a 430i Gran coupe (in M Sport styling), and it looks really good as long as the grille surround/insides are in black.
I concur! I bought the 420i M Sport with the M Sport pro pack to have all the blacked out grilles/windows. It looks so much better than the chrome.
I think it's a very good looking car with a pretty ugly grille.

Drove exactly same car here in Finland month ago 440i M with all extras. It was sporty car and fuel effiency was good for 6 cyl engine. I liked it. But it feels small and u are like squeezed inside the car. Also drove 420d. It was nice too.

In Denmark, the base spec 420i Gran Coupe cost the same as the i4 M50.. Don't think we'll see many of these around!

My guess is every car model will have the highest price in singapore because you pay to drive in a huge city for x amount of time, if I'm correct! :)

Man it hurts. I used to check M car or AMG prices in Northern Denmark, Norway and Finland. (not sure if it's similar in Sweden) It's crazy expensive.
Cars like X6M or X5M are so popular in the bigger markets.

Bought this car in the shadow line package over a month ago. Me and the wife love it. Test drove 3 series & in the states surrounded by big vehicles, 3 series are great but TOO small. Plus for the money give me the newer grille! ‘22 3 series visually was no different looking from any previous year.

I own the F36 440i GC. Amazing car. Would have upgraded to this, if it wasn't for the grille. Still looking for an alternative.

I have a 420d (previous generation) and I think it’s much more practical than a 3 series due to the much better boot entry and well, it looks much better … but in Portugal at least , the price difference wasn’t so huge, so maybe that’s why I like it so much against the 3 series

@@joaoruxa In 2018, Sport Line with only one extra (sports gearbox - meaning steering paddle shifters ), 57.000€ . I remember the 3 series costed around 5.000€ less but if you added some extras to make it exactly the same as the 4 series, the price difference would be even smaller …. And I still like the 4 series better in the way it looks (frameless doors are beautiful and the coupe line is gorgeous), and as family car with kids between 12 and 17 (none near 6 foot or 1,80m) the car is perfect and has a very big and practical boot

Surely if splashing out this kinda dough, why not go for a late f82 m4! Looks better, awesome performance, cabin space is surprisingly great (even for a family of 4 - no trouble having four adults in the car either). The only trade off is not a four wheel drive. Well, I can live with that 😊

I really don’t think it looks any more “sporty” than the 3 series now. Sits too high and just doesn’t look as sleek as the old gen. Also those door handles don’t look right to my eye but each to their own.
Completely agree, especially about the door handles! It’s a shame they couldn’t use the same handles as the 4 series coupe for this ICE version
It shares the platform with the I4 unfortuneatly, the car is raised so batterys fit underneath..

i currently drive the old f36 gen and totally agree, i prefer the look of it over this one. But the interior on the f chassis cars are pretty bland/outdated for a luxury car, a lot of models don't even have CarPlay lol

Good vid that. With every drag race you do, why don't you have a 'standard' 4cyl car that goes up against all the other cars for every drag race done. Whichever car is the most popular bought in the UK for a 4cyl. A bit like Top Gears' reasonably priced car so it's a great comparison to show how quick these outrageously priced cars are. You could use your daily drive but they're normally a bit special for the high profile journalists. Anyway, thought it would be great to see all the drag races include an everyday car which would lose almost all of the time. Thanks for making all the vids, Merry Christmas to Team Carwow. 👍🎅🎄
The standard car would lose most of the time, unless you did an extra race with it, but then the videos would start to drag.. They already are with the promo and ads

If you're feeling like it's dragging with promo and ads then you can either pay for no ads or expect less from the channel as promos help them do what they do. And that's entirely up to you. Harmon kardon is the best sound system you can have and luckily its usually only available for BMWs.If you’re into your music, do not get the standard sound system
@@RM-gk2ck Harmon Kardon is far from being the best sound system around. It's good in the BMWs. But only good. The Bowers and Wilkins in the 5 series and above are excellent though. Dynaudio systems are often better than HK

You could get a 3-series but if you want a nice colour or a contrasting trim, then you are severely limited with the 3. If you can wait for delivery you could again spend the difference on an individual colour. I agree with Matt though, seems almost a car without a purpose. As usual BMW will discount the difference and we’ll see loads on the roads!

One thing, when you are talking about tire noise I think it might depend on the tires the car currently is having as I assume not all cars are delivered on the same tires. But I might be wrong.
Depends on the car, high performance cars which are more likely to get OEM spec tyres almost always come on the same tyres.
I like the grill on the new 4 series, however I don't like the matt black plastic on the front end and side vents
I love the grill, even better on the ///M 3/ 4

I prefer the M3/M4 front end because of the huge air inlets either side of the grille and the fact that all the chrome elements this M440i has, has been ditched. Looks mean as f****! Still, really nice coupe the 4GC, though the 8GC wipes the floor with it in the design department, one of the best looking BMWs ever.

Hard to believe those wheels are 19'' I was waiting to hear they were some winter tyre 17's, must be the design. I'm still struggling with the grille even bow having seen a few more on the road..

I find that the rear seats on 4GC is so much smaller than 3 that, there are little points to cross-shop between the two if someone need rear seat at any semi-regarlar basic. IMO 4GC is more like 4 coupe+ - great for singles and DINKs that rarely used the rear seat, but appreciated the practicality of the lift-back.
I bet this car can rival the Bronco.

13:35 passes a BMW F45 Active Tourer M-Sport one of the most underrated BMW ever! Anyway as for the 4GC, i think it looks ok and happy it is more accommodating for 3 rear passengers than the last gen but it does seem too heavy & large for the 420i guise which would probably be the only one i could afford...

The grille works really good on a saloon like the m3. It works quite well on a 4 door 'coupe' aswell

Nice colour, and to be honest the 440 makes more sense than M4, there quick enough and a better daily driven car.

Could you do future reviews with mid spec models. I.e. the 420 M Sport instead of a vehicle that costs many thousands more. It’s not representative of the average buyers choice of model/spec.

Having a plate on the grille makes such a huge difference. I feel it’s a bit more tolerable with the plate on. Otherwise it just looks too in ur face when it is just the grille

Someone please explain to me why the 420i as well as the 430i have a 2.0l engine. Doesn't this part of BMW's naming system tell you exactly about that?
A very long time ago, BMW's were named according to their engine size. So a 30i had a 3.0l, a 20i had a 2.0l. But thanks to environment regulations, they had to downsize their engines and put turbos on it to keep the same amount of power. A 20i and a 30i basically share the same engine, but the ECU let's the 30i develop full power. The 20i is limited. Same thing for the 18d and 20d: a remap on the 150 hp 18d easily gives you the 190hp you get in a 20d.

Agree, the new 4GC is a bit like the combination of F series 4GC+3GT... IMO not as nice as the F36.
I like the grill on the 4 Series and I haven't hated it in the beginning. It suits the car and I understand where it's coming from. Honestly I think the 4 Series is one of the most beautiful cars in the lineup
