We have one of each and havent looked back since. Female Calico, Male Tabby from same litter. Female 10lbs, Male 20 plus lbs. Both are fixed. We love them.

Female cats are more independent.... Ha!
Don't think so. Having only ever really had female cats my entire life (with 2 expections) I can say they're not as "independent" as people claim.
Cats like their alone time and time with their preferred human/other cats if it's a multi cat house. They simply pick the time when that is. Instead of chasing after your kitty because you want cuddles, leave the kitty be and let them come to you (it's how I was adopted by my current cat)
