  • 12 CRITICAL cat feeding MISTAKES | Can cause problems
Ever wondered if you're making mistakes while feeding your cat? Every day, countless cat parents, despite their best intentions, unknowingly make simple yet crucial errors that can significantly impact their feline friends' health and happiness. These aren't just minor slip-ups; they can affect how long our beloved cats stay with us. It's startling to realize that some of the most common feeding practices could be doing more harm than good, and most of us are completely unaware of it.
In this video, you will learn twelve dangerous mistakes many cat guardians make when feeding their cats. 🐱❤️
Number one: Inappropriate Stage of Life Feeding. It's crucial to feed your cat food suitable for their life stage. Kitten food, adult cat food, and senior cat food each have different nutritional profiles. If you're feeding raw or homemade diets, consult a vet for a balanced approach.
Number two: Feeding Your Cat Tablescraps. Tablescraps can be too fatty and spicy, leading to digestive issues and nutritional imbalances. They can also encourage undesirable behaviors like begging and food stealing.
Number three: Avoid Free-Feeding Your Cat. Free-feeding can lead to weight gain and obesity. Structured feeding times help maintain their natural hunt-eat-groom-sleep cycle, promoting healthier habits.
Number four: Wrong Placement of Bowls. Cats prefer their eating and drinking areas to be separate to prevent contamination and increase water intake. Place their water bowl away from their food in a quiet area.
Number five: Not Reading the Labels. Ensure the first ingredient in cat food is meat or fish, not grains or vegetables. Avoid artificial additives and preservatives for a healthier diet.
Number six: Feeding Dog Food to Cats. Dog food lacks the necessary protein and taurine cats need, leading to serious health issues like heart disease and vision problems.
Number seven: Feeding Fish-Flavored Foods Exclusively. Fish-flavored foods can contain heavy metals like mercury and arsenic and may cause allergies. A varied diet with different protein sources is best.
Number eight: Thinking Cats Can Thrive on Plant-Based Diets. Cats are obligate carnivores and need meat for essential nutrients. A plant-based diet can lead to severe health problems.
Number nine: Feeding Your Cat Only Meat. While meat is crucial, cats need a mix of vitamins, minerals, and fiber found in their natural prey. A balanced diet includes more than just muscle meat.
Number ten: Not Paying Attention to Toxic Foods. Foods like onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, and raisins can be toxic to cats. Even common foods like milk can cause digestive issues since many cats are lactose intolerant.
Number eleven: Using Deep, Narrow, Plastic Bowls. These can cause whisker fatigue and harbor bacteria, leading to discomfort and skin issues. Opt for shallow, stainless steel or ceramic bowls.
Number twelve: Sticking to Dry Food Only. Cats on a dry food diet often experience chronic dehydration, leading to health issues like kidney disease. Wet food can provide necessary moisture and better hydration.

I put out 1/2 cup of dry food and 1/2 small can of wet food every night before I go to bed at night. During the day I put out 1/3 small can of wet food for 9am,12 pm,3pm,and 6 pm. I’ve got a big rag doll who weighed 11 pounds at her last vet visit. She never gets human food or fish because she won’t eat it at all. I’ve had other cats that liked cheese or French fries occasionally but they were all rescues off the street so I limited those treats to about once a month.

I fed all my cats in the past dry cat food and they all lived to an old age without any health problems. Just not quite the 20 years my daughters cat did eating dry food.

Don't do any of these . I feed my cats mostly homemade with a supplement or premix, served on Corelle salad plates. Happy Purrsday!

A mix of dry and wet food is really the way to go.
We don't all have enough time to cook cat meals, so high quality store bought.
talk to your vet for portion size! I hope this helps

@@wiseanimalschannel The problem with most dry food is that it is full of grains and carbohydrates that cats don't need. Most wet foods are high in calcium and phosphorus. A 2022 survey by APOP, shows 61% of cats are overweight or obese. This is because 81% of cat owners state they feed dry kibble all or most of the time. And they make dry food available all the time. An affordable, grain free, low in calcium and phosphorus dry food is difficult to find. If you cook for yourself, you can make homemade for your cat. When I make hamburger or meat sauce, my cats get raw ground beef. Chicken thighs or salmon. My cats and I eat the same thing. I just can't season the meat, for me, until after it is cooked. Happy Sardine Sunday!

@@cclars6411 The #1 cat food sold is Purina Cat Chow. It has 411 calories per cup. A healthy adult house cat needs about 250 calories a day. That means you should only feed about half a cup of food per day. And it is mostly corn, wheat, rice and soy. Cats are obligate carnivores. They need meat protein for their nutritional needs. Especially the essential amino acid, taurine.

My 3 oranges (siblings) have different preference when it comes to food.Maggie prefers boiled fish or chicken with boiled mashed squash, Cham prefers meat with a little soup on it, while Chi is the most unusual cat, he prefers boiled squash, mung beans and string beans, he eats too little of meat, fish or chicken. I miss them.

Cats are extremely picky about their food and have very clear preferences.

All the kibbles and wet food i feed my cats contains chicken. Could one of them be allergic to chicken as she quite often vomits after she's eaten. She is 14 years old otherwise healthy and loves her food especially the wet food. I've been trying to work out why she vomits after her wet food especially. Perhaps she eats too fast butbi only give her a spoon or two of the wet food 🤔

Might be time for a trip to the vet? Especially at her age . . .

    • @wiseanimalschannel
      @wiseanimalschannel  14 дней назад

If she only vomits after the chicken it might be something about the chicken. This said, it’s really best to check in with the vet. After you’ve ruled out actual health issues, you can focus on very small portions frequently during the day. This said, the first thing is a vet visit.

First you say, no veggies for cats, then you comment that their food should contain some? Can you clarify?

    • @wiseanimalschannel
      @wiseanimalschannel  13 дней назад +1

What I mean is that cats cannot thrive on a vegan diet, unlike other animals. This said if the food does contain some veggies - like carrots or pinoli or peas or zucchini those veggies are ok. As long as they are very little portions as part of a meal consisting primarily of animal protein. I hope this helps?

    Quick question...
Is your cat a scardy cat? You know what i mean? Or is the cat stressed?
I have a Ragamuffin who i have had since he was a kitten. He made friends with a girl feral we call Jr. We have been feeding Jr's papa for many years now.
10 months ago we homed jr so they could grow inside together.
Well jr has yet to be comfortable. She is ok but hides and wont let us pet her, yet.
Jr will eat fast. Galaxy calls it "scarf and barf."
He suggests making the environment more comfortable, perhaps turn off the tv, feed just you and your kitty without distractions and split 1 meal up. Say 1 container, split into 2 servings over 15 minutes...
    Idk if this helps you.
It is a process, ya know. I want jr to be comfortable but she hides, her brother is still feral but we pet and even hold him.

Indi always gets scared about everything. he was like that when he adopted me 8 years ago and never changed from that point of view. My behavior expert told me that the experiences they have in the first 3 months of their lives leave marks forever. Indi found me when he was three months old and had been living outdoors in a colony. Many people in the area were fine with the cat colony. As usual though, you always have rotten apples ... some people did things to harm the cats... I guess Indi was kind of scarred by those experiences.
I work from home so he doesn't stay alone, I dedicate plenty of time to play, attention, cuddles. I am extremely careful with noises because I know they freak him out. I have regular visits with the behavior vet and he keeps telling me there is nothing I do that can cause him stress.
Plus which, the causes of feline hyperesthesia are not well known. The one thing I know is that he had a genetic predisposition because his dad was Siamese breed (this breed is unfortunately more likely to develop hyperesthesia).
      Thanks for your comment
