Just now came across this. Great footage of Rincon. I was out that day. My elbow still hurts from duck diving and holding onto my board for dear life. Got the best biggest waves ever that day.
Nothing brings back my teen and early 20s like Rincon! The 70s they were some the best sessions with a few friends during school days and the queen doing her thing at 6to8 ft so much fun your knees would ache and you have no breath from hooting by the time you got to the inside ha. Priceless.
Grew up in Santa Monica canyon in the 50-60's. State Beach was my regular spot, the "Jetty" I discovered w/ a pal ...Malibu was for the summer time and Rincon was our long distance adventure, along w/ Ventura oil pier, Stanley's diner, Refugio/El Capitan. Last time I surfed Rincon was 1962!
This video so immersive right from the beginning. So many camera angles. Amazing drone perspective, outstanding overview of big Rincon….the low flyover beginning 3:43….followed by high shot over coast hwy….Wow ! Thank you OSD, fine camerawork bro🙏🏼🏄
I’m glad there’s no background music, but I used to live there and I used to surf in that area and I still can barely identify all the places 6:53 . It would help a little bit with a tiny bit of narration Or annotation. Another lousy video and gets a thumbs down. Not trying to be harsh, but put some effort into it.
@@steveperreira5850 Yeah, I get it. I could have narrated more and/or talked about all the spots and told stories, but then I'd get people that didn't like that either! Ha! Nice work Dave, being an Aussie whos never travelled to the states I'm guessing a swell like that has to be W or NW to get in behind the Channel islands? Also presuming r a swell like that would be way to big for Trestles????
Yes, you are right, needs to be NW or West. This swell had West in it and a lot of spots in the area like that direction. South swells generally get blocked especially in Santa Barbara. Strangely, I've surfed Rincon super fun in the summer. Trestles catches this at a weird angle and it seems to stretch it out more, but still has walls and is fun (and crowded Haha)! I checked it when I went to shoot Blacks on the second day of the swell and it looked good, but there were plenty of other spots that handled the swell better.
Stumbled on this video while watching all the new videos documenting the historic swell that hit California. Beautiful waves, nice drone shots and a nice overview of the Rincon area, but the editing was driving me crazy. It kept switching back and forth between different surf spots. Drone shots were cut mid-flight, to go to land shots, then halfway through that shot, it switched back to another angle at another spot. The shots were not allowed to play out. The great waves and nice camera work was ruined by choppy editing. I felt like someone stole my TV remote control and was flipping the channel every few seconds to screw with me. Let me see the waves!
Thanks for your honesty. I feel you. This is a RUclips edit. It's actually against my instincts to cut it like this. I like to let shots play out like you said, but I lose people that are used to fast cuts. It's a strange balancing act. I plan on releasing a 'Raw' version that is much longer for those surf stoked people who can handle it! Ha! Now, I just need to find the time! Cheers
Also in France bro (sizewise) and get's easy bigger, we don't have that plenty of typical long period rolling pointbreaks but still...I always taught Cali was super exceptionally good, grow up with that adoration. But with all that internet footage last years ....I prefer to check a bit more south ...Mexico 😂 Still would love to go to Cali.
That's big but not that big for a winter storm. Sure, those are tasty waves, but I've surfed Rincon bigger than that in the early 80s and have photos to back that up. Double overhead at least. I've also seen the SB breakwater at 8+ feet.
You are right, I thought it may have even been bigger, but the late afternoon saw some huge sets at Rincon. Every swell that is an anomaly is often overhyped. This one was good and a nice direction, but I think I have seen bigger as well.
Not a big deal. Rincon is the same as surfing Waikiki on large breaks. Unless you are catching the wave at the front point break where you can chose a left or right drop! if you chose to drop left you got big-ups. If you chosose to drop right from the point you have one wall out section to make the long rolling Waikiki stroll. Long may the ride be but not as exciting as dropping in at the point. I lived it. As a newly transplant from Hawaii moving to Santa Barbara surfing the "Con felt like home. Enjoy the moment and most importantly keep an eye out for those that may require your assistance Be safe out there. Aloha
As a former homeowner at Rincon Point I hated big wave days. The behavior of the surfer crowd and how they treated homeowners and residents was unacceptable. Destruction of the gate to the private community by surfers just to save walk of a few feet was out of control
If I lived in such a beautiful world renown surf spot I would leave the gate open for the surfers. Access to the ocean in California is supposed to be for all anyway.
It’s a quiet estuary with birds posted up undisturbed. Not really cool tromping through the delicate tule’s to save a 1/3 mile walk on one of the paths.
Yep. After the late 90's, behavior went to shit. I grew up surfing that whole area in the 70's-90, and that kind of crap was rare and usually addressed by the local crew.
Sorry to hear this. While I do see the point made by another commenter of access, I've always just walked around to surf Rincon. Considered it part of the experience to check the waves and feel the rocks on my feet walking up the point. I would hope not to be judged by the small minority, when the large percentage of surfers, especially at Rincon, are respectful.
@@OldSurfDad I just watched a video of Swamies…. There looked to be a hundred in the pack. Cleanup sets did give them a good washing! In the 80’s on clean days we would have at least 5 catching the big rideable ones. Got too crowded for me! Dang.
I get it. Everyone has their preference. Some people don't like my music selection, so I'll often put the ocean noise in there. Thanks for watching and good idea putting your own soundtrack!
