Thanks for sharing. Nice machine.👍.
Focus is incredible? The sensor is so small that all is in focus anyway. The log starts at 1600, noisy. Low light is shit. U can use a Sony fx30 with tamron 18-300, larger sensor, better image, same zoom, cheaper price
No, of course not, the background is always blurred. The FX30 is a useless marketing camera with reduced capabilities, and the image is worse, just like the Tamron 18-300 is a useless photo-optics - this bundle will not even cope with the tasks set.
@@csamd9049 are you drunk? how is sony fx30 useless?
@@petrub27 lack of video optics, weak autofocus, very weak and inconvenient amateur controls, worse image quality (except for unnecessary strong lighting), weak image stabilization, inconvenient amateur ergonomics. FX30 in such a shooting there will be many frames taken that are defective.
@@csamd9049 only if you are drunk, thou
You may be right. I think these limitations work for what I’m doing. I would rarely ever use this in lowlight shooting surf and the ability to stream is a great feature.. I hope someone sees this comment that is on the fence and realizes the cons. Btw I’m new to this what does “the log starts at 1600 mean? I know it’s ISO 1600, but I believe I can adjust this…hmm?
I missed the live show, but regardless the entry fee the fact that surfing had reached beyond the beach culture we are accustomed to is celebrated. Yip the rich country club tag is just that, but I would rather spend the high entry fee and spend a month somewhere lapping up the ebb and flow. I watched the last WSL longboarding compo at Abu Dhabi which Stevie Sawyer won the reach the final 8 with round 1 being a 3 wo/man heat with the winner advancing. Perhaps the CT Final 5 will expand to this at Cloudbreak. A single Bigwave event is just laugable as a tour, thank goodness for the Surfer Awards from the free surfs submissions to give these athletes proper recognition. .
We need a big wave slab tour combining both big wave and slab locations
@t_bone_collector Im sure if a nimble format could be formalized it might breathe a revival into the BWT. However politics, locals and contest approvals make it difficult for WSL to tick a go ahead. Twiggy later mentioned he regreted the rejection vote to include Dungeons in the BWT several years ago, but like the Eddie 'the Bay calls the day'.
Yeh, I think a surfers budget would go one of two directions. A. Abu Dhabi wave pool and really work on one’s technique and learn how to do a new maneuver. B. Travel to an unknown place (i.e Indo, South Africa) with the possibility of getting skunked or scoring gold and either way having a lifetime of memories and an un curated cultural experience. I’ll take B
Has Tyler made any comment regarding Abu Dhabi any where? Her concerns? Social media? To the WSL?
I don’t think Tyler has but Keala Kennley posted something about it on her insta
sorry the woke BS is OVER, TRUMP 2024!!!!!!!
I’ve seen nothing from Tyler, but her brother, her partner Lilli and as T-bone mentioned Kaeala Kennelly each posted their thoughts. I feel like Tyler will make a statement at some point either by posting on Instagram or not showing up at Abu Dhabi. There must be behind closed doors meetings at the WSL in how to handle this one.
YES! The big wave tour and WSL tour are dead! Nobody gives a fuck about surfing. WSL is run by clowns who have destroyed surfing. Seriously, ask yourself, are these tours better since they took over? Answer, NO!
Nothing is ever perfect but at least ELO is gone and Cloudbreak JBay and Snapper are back for 2025
If the WSL is a circus there are probably a few clowns (just like any organization). Thankfully, the center ring clown ELO is gone. Good riddance and I've seen positive changes since then. ELO talked a lot and moved surfing backwards, Ryan Crosby talks little and moves surfing forward. It's kinda refreshing tbh. I'm Pro 'Pro surfing'. I really enjoy it..in fact, I love it so much that I started this channel to talk about the good and the bad that comes with WSL decisions. I think we all want to see the best Pro Surfers qualify for opportunities to surf the best waves and win a fair championship. We get closer to that goal, but there's still a way to go.
So if it costs $1500 AUD to surf the pool with 3 other surfers for 90mins with around 20-24 waves per session my calculations estimate it would cost $250 per wave 😮
based on 6 waves each I work it out to be around that.....not $62!!!
@@davidgorlicki160yes mate your right maths was not my strong point at school 😊
... Hey fellus 😎🌊🇦🇺
Yo Dave! Thanks for watching and appreciate the comment coz it helps the channel. You getting any waves lately?
@OldSurfDad ... No worries Dave , your welcome brutha.... I enjoy tuning in to you guys and find it keeps me up to speed on the latest news I want to know about the wsl ( being a part time fan 😂 ) Maybe being from the same generation of surfer also helps mate 🌊 Been an average spring down here in wadandi boodja tbh mate ... but sneaking a few waves in here n there waiting for the good " spring tide days to come soon 🙏
I have close friends who do the safety rescues at Peahi and there has been an influx of unprepared surfers operating skis without the proper training and it's created a very dangerous situation in the lineup. Not only for the surfers but also putting added stress on the Peahi safety crew.
That sounds like a dangerous mix and as you say it’s the rescue people that have to put themselves at risk
I'd seen this years ago when Tow first became popular and some thought they were ready without having basic swim/paddle/surf/ocean knowledge to back them. Since then, Less and less surfers have the resume, but more and more think they qualify driven by fame, social media posts and sheer ignorance. The men and women that do rescues need to be able to call out those that will put them in danger. Those with real big wave desire enjoy the training and preparation knowing the risks they are taking.
Do you like this model better than the PXW-Z150? Not sure if I should upgrade.
I don't have a PXW-Z150, but maybe someone in the comments can help
Nice video Dave, I appreciate all the particulars that you need in a single camera. I love the fact that this thing has the RUclips livestream function, the fact that you can get video to a viewer without having to import files into a computer and edit and transcode and upload is just so amazing to me and I love it on the A7IV, but to your point, I love that all this camcorder goodness runs off a single battery. Clear Image Zoom is enabled by a setting, then you will have an extra 1.5x your 20x optical for 4k 10 bit. Also with the Sony PDF manuals, I get those onto an iPad that I use with my cameras and load it into the Books app. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching and especially this comment. I got sidetracked on another project, but looking forward to trying this the next time there's some swell. Stoked on Clear Image Zoom!
Excellent review thanks! I’m considering 28-135mm servo for my FX6 vs this idea hmmm…
Sacrifice image quality for 4x the zoom range, that's a tough decision, if you don't already have a B cam, get this for it's range and it's ability to stand in as a second camera. I was hoping the 28-135PZ was old enough that it may be time for a MKII, I love that focus clutch mechanism on that lens.
Thanks for watching. Someday, when my budget has room, I plan to go back that direction, but I think this camera is a bridge to that place.
Mike Moreau here in el salvador for first time, met Brian last night, he introduced me to Oysters El Salvador, it is worth the trip alone, great people, great place, great country, excellent President, Bukele
Hey Mike thanks for watching and your comment. Bryan is a class act and a perfect ambassador for El Salvador. 🇸🇻
Camcorders are the king content gathering machines.
Especially one with live-streaming baked in.
Keep a look out for Greyson Grant and Kyan Yang. Very solid kids getting better!
Thanks for this..putting together a show highlighting new talent soon.
Cleland, Herdy and Levi Slawson are ones to watch. Jett is gnarly too.
Bella rips. Bad call boys. I love your show bro. She is gnarly.
Gotta admit I did watch a wave of Bella and she threw buckets 🌊🌊🌊
I hope she does well, but I feel like the level of surfing from others on the CT will eclipse her skill level at this point, but look, I'm cheering for her. Patriotically I don't mind adding another American to the arsenal of Caity, Caroline and Sawyer.
Jackson Bunch is the hawaiian Jacob Wilcox. A little bit more flow and style i think he’s going to have a really good year. Marco could be good but he’s going to struggle at the beginning with pipe and portugal i think. Joel, Jackson, George and Sammy make the cut with sammy being a contender this year i think
Great analogy and like your cut predictions 🤙🏻
Thanks for this comment. Looking forward to see Jackson Bunch this season. I think he might have more range than Eli Hanneman. We'll see.
First of all the big companies sold surfing to the world which was their biggest crime and now no matter where u travel in the world we have nothing but crowds Now they won’t even sponsor the top surfers in the world bunch of greedy mutts Gilmore won’t come back because she knows she couldn’t beat any of those young kids 715she’s finished but what a great career
But at least if you’re rich 🤑 you can get empty waves in a wave pool! $haha. The sad part is that the major surf brands were started by core surfers and now they are owned by corporations. I see the smaller brands created by people that actually surf being supported and I love to see it. Florence’s popularity is proving you can be a core brand, have success, and not suck.
Erin Brooks will be 2025 World Champ
That's a bold call, but then again would it surprise anyone? 🤷♂ My guess is Caity/Caroline will use their experience to win some heats and events, but once Erin get comfortable she could roll everyone for a few years.
Sign of the times, the old school brands are pretty much bankrupt
They overestimated demand as sales started falling off because they got greedy and put Billabong in Costco. Ha. I mean that's the way it looked to me, but I'm sure it's more complicated than that. Bottom line is they have slashed budgets from team riders and core marketing for corporate earnings which is what publicly traded companies do. Hopefully surfers can branch out and find new brands to partner with in more creative ways.
Ian was injured thats why he didnt surf last 2 events, he wants to get healthy to CT next year
Thanks for this...I didn't know. He still got second! Dang, pretty remarkable.
btw, How do you think he'll do on the CT?
@@OldSurfDad yeah he was eager to surf saquarema to take a shot at title but couldnt be ready for it.. Ian gonna rip pipe, hes a great tube rider. I think he has a chance to make the cut if he goes well at pipe and portugal
Gorgeous day.
It's been interesting watching Sierra Kerr. In the last year she has struggled to get far into several CS contests, mostly not in the greatest waves, but she absolutely demolished the field at the QS in the Philippines that just finished on Nov 1. The waves were up and down so she looked to be showing better heat craft than before, and then landed three airs in the finals and thoroughly combo-ed her opponent. If she can keep that form up she will sail into the next CS series and on from there. A question I have is, if Sierra Kerr and Tya Brozowski are the two most exciting women not on yet the CT, who are the most exciting male surfers in the same position? I'll throw out Brazil's Arthur Vilar, newly crowned U14 and U16 Brazil champion, though he's still very young!
Thanks for this comment! T-bone and I might have to do a show on upcoming talent! Tya did look impressive in Ericeira...really mature surfing for 13. The other young up and coming females are Australian Milla Coco Brown and San Clemente's Eden Walla who was the youngest ever to win the Supergirl event. Eden's brother Zion (13) is already charging huge Pascuales in Mexico (check his insta if you haven't seen it). I saw Arthur Vilar surfing with Italo in El Salvador this year leading up to the Punta Roca event. He's still a bit raw and throws crazy airs, but as he grows into his style, he could be the next superstar.
@@OldSurfDadanother 13 year old to watch: Kiara Goold (just realized she’s 14 now but still very young)
Judging and conditions are the achilles heal of modern surfing , an example is Cole Houshmand at bells in 2024 . The judges gave Cole the nod over Gabriel at Winki in a controversial win for the young guy . Houshmand also got through the quarter final against Ethan Ewing in a non event (due to lack of waves) with only 3 waves surfed in total for the heat . Cole got the first wave very early in the heat , then both surfers grovelled for unsurfable garbage for the rest of the heat . The event then went on hold after Cole v Ethan heat .
"Judging and conditions are the achilles heal of modern surfing" Those are for sure the two wildcards..Judging is subjective and waves are outside our control. The example you give is a good one. If Cole doesn't get that nod over Gabe he probably doesn't make the cut. If Gabe gets that call he may have made the Final 5. It's that close. I put the side by side review on my channel (ruclips.net/video/G7pEquUYiy0/видео.html) and it's still a coin toss to me. I thought Gabe actually won when I watched it live, but could see how it could go either way. Thanks for your comment.
Best in class for sure S. Pupo
Jackson Bunch or Joel Vaughn too. But sammy could be top 5 this year his surfing in performance waves is so good
Rookie of the year! Erin Brooks is the entire package
Yeah, she's got so many weapons! Did you see her Dad shaved his beard? He looks completely different!
@ Wow no I didn’t but I already was on her team but what she’s done this past year was remarkable. She is a total package and will be world champ within 3 years. Also it sucks that S. Kerr just didn’t do as well as I expected but her surfing is on point. She just won Cloud 9 events with Nias and Cloud 9 it looked better than the waves on the CT this year. I dig your show keep it up my brother. It’s cool to have someone with the same views and age that I am still totally stoked on Surfing!
@@joshualogan835I think she didn’t really try on the CS yet.i heard her saying somewhere she’s still trying to improve her surfing before really giving it a shot. I somehow like she’s taking her time. She’s definitely good but let the kids be kids. Her time will come…
Take out kenworthy and put in S. Kerr 💯 percent
Sierra will get her chance. She should qualify next year if she decides to focus on it, but she free surfs some pretty epic waves with pops so I could see her becoming a free surfer and perhaps having more fun!
@@OldSurfDad Well S. Kerr was in full force contest surfing yesterday at Cloud 9 and killed it each and every heat free surf or contest surfer or both this young lady is on 🔥 fire. Plus having J. Kerr as your Father sure helps
@@OldSurfDad plus I saw this young 13 year old girl whom I think is from Tahiti but surfs of course for 🇫🇷 France Tya Zebrowski whom got a wildcard in the ERICEIRA pro and made it to the finals to get second against Sally Fitzgibbons but I couldn’t believe a 13 year old girl with a nice power hack and a good air game already at 13. Shocking and Stoked for sure.
@@joshualogan835 Yes! was just saying on another comment here how impressed I was with Tya! One to watch for sure.
Just watched a clip of Bella surfing backhand 🤘🏼 She was sending spray as big as any women on tour
I still think Malia Manuel should have made the CT and not Sally F. Malia was rated higher than Sally, when they both fell off tour.
I still remember this! I was pissed! Malia has so much style and grace and is fearless in larger waves and reefbreaks! I'm still peeved by the way the WSL favored Sally without explanation and with blatant favoritism. smh
Good call on Malia 🤙🏻
There are a few ways you can adjust the camera to focus on your desired subject, such as the surfers, without using manual focus. Options include using the “tracking using human detection” settings, “tracking a specified subject”, or using the “autofocus area/position” setting to flexible or zone. You can also adjust the AF subject shift sensitivity and lock on to your subject. Lots of options to consider. For manual focusing, “using manual focus temporarily” section of the manual provides the details you may consider. Works well when you need to quickly manual adjust focus, then quickly return to AF mode for focusing.
Thank you for this! I will be diving in soon before my next shoot. Appreciate it!
Use the S&Q feature at 120 fps with a 180 degree shutter angle for awesome slow motion video on a 24 fps timeline. Amazing camera and great video quality.
I’d trade Nadia (who was injured the last 2 events) for Lakey who has a season WC
This is such a GREAT CALL! Nadia has impressed me...She made the Quarters in the Olympics losing a close heat to Tati! And I think Lakey will struggle to make the Cut tbh.
Definitely trade Sally for Luana or Amuro, Sally has had her time...
Luana should see action as a wildcard. She's so close to being on the CT every year it's heartbreaking at times. She's improving and could make the cut given the chance.
Sort of agree to give some fresh blood a crack at the CT🤘🏼 Should there be a cap on how many times can you drop off the CT and requalify ?
Over 8 years of watching CT events and I’m over the direction WSL has gone. I could tell you details of almost every heat that my wife and I watched: most all of them live. Maybe something will get me more excited, I thought the progression of the ladies might get me fired up or Cloudbreak back on tour but the passion is gone. Maybe I just need to take a break! The format from the Olympics was reminiscent of the ASP days where the surfing does the talking. I even like how the announcers paused every now and then and said nothing. I just want to see surfing WSL.
I feel this..I think women's surfing is the most exciting part of the WSL right now. The way the announcers handled the Olympics is the ideal (I think they were coached to pause and it was great).
Ian Gouveia. Surfed only 4 events and made the cut in 2nd! Nuts!
Gangsta mode...but does he make the cut?
Surprised Ian didn’t compete in the last challenger event in Brazil ?
Mens ROTY goes to Marco
Love this guys surfing and am really curious to see how he goes..
Joel or George ROTY ?
He will be the first off tour. great in small waves that’s it tho
Isabella and Erin make the cut with Erin taking the ROTY
Good call. No one wants to back me on Vahine, but that's ok. Haha
I wasn't expecting Tbone to throw out Amuro's name! THANKS!! Amuro Tsuzuki is a great friend and she absolutely RIPS! I'd trade her out for Isabella. Amuro's power game is top notch and she's starting to spend more time in larger surf. She didn't do better than a ninth this season in CS events but I know she was struggling with some issues.
Amuro is solid surfer. I notice she can be inconsistent in heats at times, but I've seen her smash the lip and went "wow"!
🤙🏻🤙🏻 Be awesome to see Amuro make the CT 🇯🇵
... R Cal having sponsorship issues is all kinds of wrong imo ... How is this possible in the modern era of surfing and its apparent proffesionalism now ? Its an Olympic discipline now and a top 15 guy has trouble to fund his endeavors... I dont get it either
Agree, Who will pick him up and does he win an event this year?
@@OldSurfDad ... Geez mate I have no idea tbh ... Hoping for a high profile victory and sponsorship for this kid in 2025 that's for sure Dave 🙏🌊🇦🇺
Erin Brooks vs Caity Simmers is going to be the Bird vs Magic of women's surfing
That could be your finals at Cloudbreak!🤩 Who would you take?
@@OldSurfDad I think Caity will take it this time, but Caity vs Erin is going to be a common world champion matchup for the future
Pulling for RyCal to pump it up this season. One of the best backhands of power surfing.

... Hey fellus ... 🌊🙏💪
Yo Dave! Thanks for watching!
@OldSurfDad ... Your welcome brutha,.. I tune in whenever I'm able ... Really enjoy the take you guys have on the wsl and surfing life in general ... Keeps me updated on all that's going on in that realm 🙏
I picked up the NX 800 the day after it was released and then truly happy with the results. I only shoot in normal rec-709 mode 4K 60 and I use a small color lut that just makes the colors pop and I been really happy with it. I do mostly motorsports ATV and dirtbike woods, racing and motocross. And the camera truly blows me away with the focus accuracy. I picked up two Bp-u60 batteries by Watson on Amazon and I get about 330 minutes of use. Like you I am new to camcorders but I do own a Sony FX 30 and two other Sony wireless cameras that I use for my photography business. And this camcorder just makes it a lot easier to use than my FX 30. The built-in ND filters is my favorite part. At the racing event, I put it on auto ND filter while I keep everything else in manual and it does a great job. Is it the best camera for low light? That will be your opinion, noise does show up early and the ISO/DB. But so far I’ve been happy with it when I used it at a wedding to film the first dance. All in all it’s a great addition and so many people complimented me on the quality of the video footage. I posted two videos on my channel if you wanted to see. Have a great day. Thanks for sharing.
Hello my friend! You inspire me to get this camera! Very happy so far. Will check your videos now. Appreciate you man. Btw, do you have a link to the watson batteries you bought? Not sure which ones to get and amazon is throwing me so many choices none of which list the NX800. Thank you!
When you have low light, pull out the full frame camera, this thing is for daylight, anything outside and far away, if it were dark you wouldn't have a use for the 30x 4k zoom capability. I get hung up on the low light too, but with this zoom range, if it were FF it would be unmanageably big.
I'm hoping sony makes a smaller version similar to the AX700/NX80/Z90 series or just update that series with a newer sensor with 10bit SLOG3
me too
I wish the handle could be removed from the NX800, that would make it much smaller in the bag. I too want a 10-bit replacement for my AXP-FDR55 which has 20x optical on an internal gimbal and even has a legit projector built into the flip screen, the sensor is 1/2 the size of this but wow it is small compared to the NX800.
This camera is definitely a good choice for filming surfers. I use it (and before with the Panasonic CX350 and the Sony X70) to shoot sports. I definitely want to the zoom range and small sensor over the big sensor and prime lenses for things like this where I have zero control over what's happening in the shot and I need to be ready to get shot however and whenever it happens. I do have 2 FX6's for more proper, planned shoots (commercials, corporate content) and an FX3 (usually lives on my gimbal). It's about the right tool for the job. This is the most reach you're going to get with the zoom from a camera like this. I use clear image zoom punch in all the time, and there's a very slight difference, but only really noticeable if you pixel peep. You'll need to spend exponentially more on a box lens like what they use for NFL, World Cup, Formula One, or NASCAR and that's just not practical for most of us. Regarding your dirty frame with the bokeh'ed flowers in front, I would switch to manual focus for that shot. If you don't have a LANC remote yet, getting one of those is going to rock your world like getting that counterbalanced tripod head did. I use the Libec ZFC-L. For baked in look straight out of camera, S Cinetone seems like the go-to these days, and it looks great to me.
Dude! How did I not know about the Lanc remote! Very cool. Thanks for that suggestion!
when you use clear image zoom do you also lose extra light or not? or does it stays at F4.5 in clear image zoom. I also have a FX6 , A7IV and considering this camcorder for the s-cinetone. My sony Z280 doesn't match well with my other sony cams.
Great suggestions, LANC remote was may favorite new thing when I got my first deluxe Sony camcorder. To get 24-500mm in a APS-C or Full Frame is going to cost 2x to 4x the weight and space and cash, so 1" sensor is great with killer zoom, this camera is a really nice package.
@@BONLEV I would assume you lose some light if it defaults to 4.5, but again, I'm new to this. Hopefully someone with more experience could answer. I rarely have low light situations shooting surfing in daylight so not a huge thing for me personally, but there's a lot of folks that shoot weddings so that may be more important for those gigs.
Im more in the power surfing court then the air court. But when Im out in the line up and someone lands an air . It is so cool to see. Its a lot different watching close up then in a video or sitting onbthe beach.
I feel like Griffin and Crosby check both boxes - Power and Air.
If you want to get better zoom, shoot in 4K and edit in 1080HD. You can push in using DaVinci or any editing software, but you don't lose resolution. The only tradeoff is your output is in 1080 and not in 4K.
Great advice! Much appreciated.
Clear Image Zoom works seamlessly without having to make any such compromise.
Definitely make sure you watch this in 4K. I had RUclips on Auto so it kicked it to 720p and it looked bad, but once in 4K, the video was MUCH better.
Thanks, pinning this comment.. My talking head portion is filmed in like 720 so it looks like crap, but all good..It's about checking the video. Cheers!
looks great. I've been using these prosumer type cams for making fiction features for a long time now. this new cam looks good for that purpose.
Ordered one yesterday for primarily shooting nature and motorsports. The pro's far outweighed the cons as I don't care about shallow depth of field or low light performance nearly as much as I care about ease of use and the convenience of the single lens and power zoom etc. The ability to reasonably shoot hand held is a huge thing for me when jumping out of the car to shoot wildlife which is not going to stick around for me if I don't get the shot quickly. If it performs half as well as I think it well I will be happy.
This is essentially my story in a different application. Pro surfers are like wildlife in that they don't want to wait around for you either. Haha. Good luck and please share your experience. I am pretty excited to give it a few more sessions and make videos mixing in this and other cameras and angles. Cheers!
Yes, camcorders are still here in 2024. Great video.
Thanks for watching. Yep, I never thought I’d be buying a camcorder- haven’t had one since the 90s! Ha
