    14-15 foot lbs? Wouldn't that strip or otherwise damage the bolt, thermostat housing?

    I have a 2004 Kia Spectra EX (2.0) . The bottom hose is cold and the top hose is warm/hot. Would that be a thermostat or a water pump. Also, the radiator fan doesn't click on. Please help.

      @poidial 8 лет назад +1

      +jackslater230011 Correct, either thermostat or water pump. The cooling system has two circuits basically. One cycles around the engine block keeping your engine cool until it reaches optimum operating temperature. Then the thermostat opens up and allows coolant to reach the second circuit which goes through the radiator. Forward speed of the car is usually enough for the radiator to lower the temperature of the coolant, if the car is not moving at enough speed there is a thermal switch which engages the fans to draw air through the radiator for added regulation protection.
      Either your thermostat is faulty and not allowing coolant to flow to the radiator circuit, or the water pump is not moving the coolant at all. The fans are not engaging because the thermal switch is not triggered. It is unlikely that your fans or thermal switch are faulty.
      The fact that the lower pipe is cold, makes me suspect the thermostat. This is good news. Thermostats are much cheaper and easier to replace than water pumps ($15 and one hour compared to a few hundred dollars and your weekend gone).
      SOLUTION: replace your thermostat as per this video, top up your coolant, then burp your cooling system.
      DO NOT IGNORE THIS PROBLEM!!! Do not drive your car any more! The next thing to happen is the head gasket will blow or the head will crack, because the overheated coolant cannot escape to the cooling circuit and the excess pressure will have to go somewhere. This will cost thousands if you take it to a mechanic. If this happens it may be cheaper to scrap you car.

      Thanks. I kind of figured it was a thermostat. So I went ahead and ordered on from Kia. I bought one from Duracrap, and the damn thing didn't open until the water boiled. My thermostat is supposed to crack at 177 and fully opened at 203. I definitely know the dangers of driving a car that overheats. I learned that when I was about 7. My dad did that and he regretted it. But, in any case, I always start with the cheapest thing first. Thanks for the info.

    I know this is an old(er) video but what is the best way to drain the coolant fluid, just remove the lowest hose and let it drain?
