I have total respect for Vernon's tech who has to setup his rig; make sure everything works and syncs correctly, and tear it down.
No kidding egads!
A lot of comments implicitly criticising the complexity of Vernon Reid's rig: if you're happy with a les paul into a tube screamer into a Marshall, good for you. We're looking at this incredibly innovative guitarist explaining how he gets his sound and it's genuinely eye opening.I didn't realise the point of these videos was to watch a bunch of pros demo the same basic set up.
Totally agree. So impressed with his setup. The band that I would love to start if I could find a guitarist that is even close to this innovative along with a DJ with half as much knowledge as he has I think it would be the biggest thing in the world. The problem is they would need a bassist up to the same caliber. In this day dream I am the bassist and we tour the world and I never have to swing a hammer again unless I want. The problem is I’m not that good. But seeing something like this gives me inspiration to keep trying to improve.
I agree you can have it all .Everything running parallel instead of in line is genius and requires a bit more gear but sou ds so distinct all together
The first time I heard them the first thing I noticed was the Guitar tone. Mind you this was ten years before I even knew anything about music or guitar playing.
Even if you dont know S*** about guitars you'll notice his....
Agreed
Look where he is and look where they are. Says everything.
Vernon is all about simplicity.
Just gimmie an old six-string and a Fender Tweed and I'm good.
That's basically the thrust of this run-down if you don't gave time to watch the whole thing.
Simplicity??? Amazing player
.but nothing simple about that rig!!!
@@oldgeezerfitnessr.perales7344 You understand sarcasm absolutely perfectly.
😂🤣😂🤣
@@oldgeezerfitnessr.perales7344You right it's not simple it's just freaking overload, Yeah there is a thing called Overkill in any aspect of life All I can say is you and I both know they've been some great guitar playing before all these gadgets with 300 yards of cord and they sounded great.. He's probably like a nerdy geek in the computer world at home and he likes to dab into all the technology that comes out and just tries to get creative you know like the drum kits back in the day You can't play but so many in a given song right But then the drum sets just kept getting bigger and bigger all for show, That's what all this is him and his guitar friends sort of get into a competition saying hey look at me look what I got definitely overkill regardless of the talent of the guitar player .. This is voice typed so there might be some mistakes but you get the point
In other news, a freak bolt of lightning struck a venue where Living Colour was performing. The guitar/amplification system used by member Vernon Reid absorbed the errant electricity, rumored to be 1.21 Jigawatts, resulting in a short blackout. When light was restored, Vernon had vanished and is still missing. In a related story, noted professor Emmitt Brown has provided a strange explanation and a photo of what appears to be Vernon playing at the Enchantment Under the Sea High School Dance in 1958.
underrated comment
Aces
"1955" ;)
Now that's deep....
and he was playing this strange song called Purple Haze, he was seen talking to the janitor about the song, a man named Al Hendrix
A few years back I had the privilege to have had some time with these guys and it was such a great thing to see how much a fan of the guitar Vernon is. He never gets tired of talking about it, its history and how he sees it. Doug was the consummate gentleman, paid for dinner for the whole group of us and spoke about all his various gigs and was so humble. Really can't speak high enough about LC, they are genuine, fantastic guys.
Far and away the best Rig Rundown ever! Please more of the artists demo'ing their rigs. Awesome!
Sales Assistant - "Hi, welcome to Guitar Center, how can I help you?"
Vernon Reid - "Hi, um, yeah I'll have one of everything, thanks".......
Sales Assistant: ............... -_-
Exactly
@@bassmanx357 Or he goes full Ron Swanson, "Son, I know more than you."
Holy crap that is one crazy guitar rig. That tech must want him dead.
Sounds like Vernon can barely make sense of his own setup. Imagine how confused his tech would sound trying to explain it:)
My thoughts exactly. Why must he be so difficult? A complex rig is not the same thing as a complicated rig. Pure overkill. What a dingbat setup.
Doug's setup makes much more sense to me. Still pretty complicated, but it seems like he knows exactly what he wants to get out of each piece of gear he has with him.
@@swordfish1120 you do know most techs know much more about the gear than the artist, don’t you? The artist knows the sound they want and the tech knows the gear.
Dougs playing is just incredible.
Jesus Christ what a clusterfuck of a live rig.
every guitar tech's nightmare
its just too much stuff..... for a crappy sound
Evan Davidson yup, terrible sound....
A. V.
At 3:14 Vernon tries to make himself heard over the warp drive engine powering up.
Vernon and Doug have been the kings of guitar effects since 1993. It's a shame people are just realizing this. check out their setups from back then.
Sam totally! I remember reading about Vernon Ried's implementation of parallel signal processing in the 80's. I see people in the comments saying that his tech must hate him but if my memory serves me correctly it was his tech that turned him on to these crazy ass setups.
Raymond Wright
They just hating, cause hez SO CALLED black. Once they lily azzes git wit da program, then it will b - DUH BROWN SOUND? DATZ SO PASSE. U NEED DIGITAL DLAYZ ROUTED THRU DA CLOUD, SYNCED N 5G.
P - A - L - E - E - E - E - Z - E!!!!!!
Probably not quite by 93, but for me Phish has the crown. Mike and Trey both have lots crazy weird sounds, but a lot more streamlined interfacing imo.
Rebecca Dirks!!!
A young lady who is so hip to music and gear is a very alluring thing.
@@YaoEspirito I find everything about her alluring.
@@GetzGoth I find her allurement a powerful and alluring alluration.
I love these guys. A Musician's Musician. They don't mess around.
They are inspired, and inspiring.
Living Colour seeks new guitar tech. Requires Cisco Networking Experience. Cloud Computing background a must. Experience in site resiliency, dark fibre, Layer-2 and 3 switching. Tuning a guitar in E not essential.
***** fo sho
Lol
😂 I know right???
The crazy thing is there are guitar techs out there now with this knowledge, the market if so over saturated it's insane.
Best thing you can do when your sick is watching rig rundowns!
My dads got COVID-19
I love that he is experimenting with new sounds. It's nice to see something different than the usual rig rundown.
Most guitar players worry about breaking a string live. Vernon Reid and his guitar/geek squad tech has to be concerned with computer viruses instead. Nice.
Joseph Marrero Not as MUCH worry tho since they're Macs. Knock on wood, but the "look out Mac users a real bad virus is on the way!!" warning is getting decades long and no play yet. Not that ANY computer is perfectly secure...but they come close. the trade-off is that it;s a much more closed system, with less customizable features. But -- mileage may vary...... And his system is awesomely flexible
Its cool, don't get me wrong. Perhaps in a few more years all guitarists will be plugging into Macs as opposed to pedals, amps, etc. Personally, I would always be worried about glitches, viruses and so on. I worry constantly about my amps failing due to power surges as it is whenever I gig or rehearse.
+DigitalAnalogNoise That's a complete fallacy. They're just such a small market nobody cares to hack them. If they keep increasing in popularity lo and behold.
Every hacking event that runs always breaks Macs first.
So you're safe because your computer is not relevant enough in the overall market of computers.
I prefer to use MAC, got tired of Windows a while back but saying they're inherently secure is just not true.
Joseph Marrero seems like he could have Bluetooth issues, or issues with the 12 pin guitar cable. Most players go for bulletproof rigs
Tommy you would think so....but really the 13-pin cables are great, no more failure rate if you stick with good ones and take care not stepping on them, allowing cases to roll over there etc. Same precautions as w regular cables, times 13!
I've toured with 13-pin for over a decade in a number of projects, with Al Di Meola, with Adrian Belew, with 3 or 4 bands of my own - the cables are never an issue. What you DO need to do is maintain clean jacks etc -- occasional air blower and D5 De-Oxit. But again that's a good idea w any cable.
It's funny, in all the touring I do --- frankly the stuff that breaks down are the regular old amps. But when I'm doing a laptop-based gig --- I never relax. So that's the tradeoff -- the high tech stuff, when setup right and with real-deal interfaces, software etc -- work beautifully. It's just tough to mentally get relaxed LOL.
Day in the life of Vernon's tech: Get to venue, cry, finish show, cry.
In the words of Scotty in Star Trek "The more curves in the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain"
Best rig rundown so far. These two are really cool musicians
I am not a guitar tech geek but this has been an informative lesson. The interviewer was really good with relevant questions that brings out both Vernon and Doug as gear experts.
I love that after all this time Vernon is still tinkering and exploring what's possible! One of the most interesting Rundowns yet.
Talk about using a rocket engine booster to heat up a can of beans. Mind you, his initials are VR
Why did you go with the Floyd Rose?
Answer: Because I have tech that does the work for me.
doug is the silliest, coolest dude. i've played with both of them and jesus they try to make the most of everything they have here
most comprehensive rig rundowns ever....awesome...especially Vernons fearless set up
Hey it is truly an honor to see, hear and listen not only to learn but to really see how these guys lay down what they know and what's out there that as a basist myself we absorb and take guitar playing to a whole new level and to enjoy as well, Michael M
Vernon likes things simplified and straight forward. LOL Wow!, he is one of the most tech savy guitarist I've seen. Watching several of these rig rundowns, I'm surprised at how many guitarists lack even the most basic knowledge of what's going on with their rig. Not Vernon.
buzzcrushtrendkill are you kidding? He has no clue what his rig is . It's just an over complicated mess
Rack of Randall's and a mean Dean.
Idk anymore.
But can he play?
Yeah the Green Day as embarrassing. Billie Joe's guitar tech didn't know what pickups he had in his guitar...
My brain is officially in my lap after trying to wrap my head around these setups. Extremely fascinating!
Thank you, Living Colour was the band that I listened to the most during my teens. "Staind" still is one of my favorite albums of all times.
And I love Vernon Reid's expressive playing.
Good for you pal
Thanks PG! I saw these guys when they came through Boston earlier this year. They killed it - and sounded great. Now I know why!
Vernon was one of my first guitar heroes as a kid. Blew my mind.
fantastic rig rundowns. I wish they played more examples to demo the sounds.
survivor030406 Doug Wimbish riffed out the entire time.
I love the thought process that goes into the sound of Living Colour. Amazing I just use a Zoom B3. Time to upgrade.
wow !
i would love to watch and hear vernons rig live
this is fascinating !
"I'm the effect, give me a microphone and a toothpick and I'll groove somewhere."-Doug Wimbish. Haha these guys rock.
Thank you for your honesty.
Wow. Go Vernon and Doug. And Dirks is really coming along with her confidence and with her voice. She is becoming a very skilled interviewer.
Amazingly impressive and crazily insane...
Best Rig Rundown EVER!
Vernon is truly an original and powerful artist, recall my experience with Lola Paloza tour , in Denver I was the guitar tech for the show, Vernon's only request was " you Don't have to do anything with my Axe, he's very particular about that stuff, but very cool individual.... Thanks for the Memories and great interview...
Awesome video!
Rebecka, your best interview yet!
I love Vernon and Doug, they're just amazing! But Rebecca also plays an interesting role here. She's a smart interviewer.
Best Rig Rundown so far
WHOA, it's like the bridge in a Stark Trek spaceship.
this is absolutely mind blowing !
Doug's creativity is on a completely different level. Yet everything he says is perfectly articulated and to the point.
Their album I LOVE. "Vivid" by Living Colour (released 5/3/1988).
i give respect to these guys for pushing the bar and moving up with the times and not being stuck in the past like most musicians theses days with there over played vintage stuff don't get wrong its nice to used at times but every ones is doing and that why there no originality in music and no one makes it in music business
That is just incredible!! I'm just in awe of these guys that can run all that shit, play really complicated music and entertain an audience all at the same time. I just do it the Roy Buchanon style, I couldn't run a rig like that if my life depended on it! unreal!!
Wow. And I thought Vernon's setup was complicated back in 1993! If I had a set up like that, I'd play one note and it'd sound like a orchestra of music.
Awesome!
VULT CULT
Datz da idea.
He said, @ sum pointz, he wantz 2 go byond just playing guitar muzak, BUTT still b playing guitar muzak.
Dude. This is just awesome.
Watching in 2020.
Still blown away. The only thing that now looks a bit obsolete now, is the Native Instruments Guitar Rig.
One of my favorite guitar players. Those first three live and color albums are excellent. He has always gotten some intense sounds with all those effects he uses I never seen such a complicated rig I wouldn’t know where to start on that thing
Always great to see Vernon and Doug show of their gear, especially nice to see Vernon's Sonuus i2M musicport :-)
These guys are awesome and having hella fun.
Love Vernon. That's one crazy rig.
Love these guys!!!
who the hell filmed this? i've rode on smoother mechanical bulls
Majoras
LOL!!!
By bulls you mean, big hairy gay men
@@fendertremolo9793 By big hairy gay men you mean, big sweaty oiled hairy gay men
How refreshing to actually have the actual instrument player in attendance. On so many of these WONDERFUL 'Rig Rundowns' the musician that plays the set-up is frequently not there.
It's for stereo effects. You might have noticed he isn't using the bass just for low-end accompaniment. He is using the stereo in/outs of the Slicer, Pitchfactor, Delays and Looper as far as I could see.
A SS was my dream and once I got one it just came through completely. It rocks like wild spiders. Sound mixers don't know what they hear when they check sound. It's a blast. Literally. I still play the same TE gear as well. Bombs away !!!
LOVE DOUG'S RUNDOWN!! NICELY DONE!!
Wow, I don't even want that rig!
I think that's a first for me!
In other news, a freak bolt of lightning struck a venue where Living Colour was performing. The guitar/amplification system used by member Vernon Reid absorbed the errant electricity, rumored to be 1.21 Jigawatts, resulting in a short blackout. The most weird yet one of the best rig rundowns i watched.
these guys know their stuff and are very interesting; great vid!
Doug stole the show he made this rundown exciting loved it
no way! i use the same rig when i'm busking.
Had the pleasure of playing a charity concert with Doug, such a nice guy.
Amazing guitarist!
That sounds like a very nice setup. I don't currently have but usually only use a Digital Delay, Dual Stereo Chorus and a possibly some type of overdrive pedal... but usually just use my second channel for that. Basic is the way to go and you have less chance of problems that way too. It is so nice to see others out there who still hold true to playing the old fashioned way!!!
clicked on this randomly, learned a helluva lot!
From what Doug is describing that Spector of his is exactly like an early Warwick Streamer from the same era (1987-1992) - they had a Jazz Bass neck profile and a much thinner body that a standard Spector! Such a good video this, from start to finish!
I was waiting for them at some point to do a rig rundown of the edge or Tom Morello but this is good enough
Thank you Joe Waltz for being a driving force in making the pedals and effects we all use, many featured in this video. Unsung hero....
this is a total nerd out! love it.
I'd love to see these guys live after seeing this.
what are the two delay / sampler pedals doug demonstrates near the end? they're both boss pedals that much i can tell but the contrast's too low to tell which models.. thx
There are about 10 different things I would like to say about Vernon Reid's setup but I'm not sure where to start. I play bass so Doug Wimbish is my man. Rebecca Dirks is my woman.
Eman Sami
U wish!
nao consigo imaginar em q show eu usaria todos esses sons q ele tem
Great musicians... we just learn watching these guys...
When I was watching Vernon's rig being described I kept thinking of an airplane that has 100 engines and if any one of them fails it crashes, Maybe not an exact analogy, but complexity beyond a certain point is asking for trouble without added benefit. But to each his own ... I love his playing and always have.
I remember being several blocks down from my high school(in SI,NY)in 91',and seeing Vernon Reid sitting in his sports car at the light.I yelled over to him and said;"Hey are you Vernon Reid!" He said "Yeah...Gotta go",as the light changed, and he zipped off.Doug Wimblish sounds a bit like Samuel L. Jackson btw
GREAT VIDEO!!!!! LIVING COLOUR 4 EVER!
i have no words to express my feeling for this rig. i don't know what to think about this one.
Vernon is a mad scientist and Doug is a tonal philosopher. Love it!
Thank you, thank you, thank you PG!!! Intermediate level at playing guitar but have wondered how sound and tone is controlled and made into slaves. We are in the digital age and this is where it's happening. Personally, my Boss ME-80 and a great amp is more than enough but its amazing what you can do with the available technology to make your sound like none other. Keep it simple if you like or really go high if that's your choice. Rock on!!
We miss Rebecca Dirks.
where is she?
"ground down" . I absolutely love that!
i love when they sample their own gear live on the spot
Those guys were incredible musicians back then, I was always wondering what they were doing
There's a lot going on...but, Vernon created one of the most iconic riffs in rock history...with that being said, he can do whatever he wants to freakin' do!
Good God Man!!!!! That just may be the craziest rig ever. EVER!
I have trouble clicking my wah pedal on without messing up! How does he cope with this live!!
I so relate to the slide thing!
Cool rig. Very cool. All of the stuff on the iPad and the exp. pedals, I understood their importance.. I thought everything was IN FRONT of the amps.. good thing some of them goes through the PA.. imagine the noise it would create..Awesome.
I cant play for sheet but couls never get enuf off the geek sheet run down ty for this
Doug's basses look so well-loved. It's a beautiful thing.
