I love Victor Wooten. There's people who try to be humble, and then there are people who are TRULY humble. He always gives credit where it's due, and takes it where it's due.

I love the contrast in gear. Victor plays all this sleek gear that looks very professional and well kempt, then Regi is over there with scuffed up pedals and headless guitar with this very DIY and well used looking setup. Something about that is just awesome.
Dons Music City, in Greensboro. I knew his cousin Johnny, also a fodera player, and I used to see him play every weekend at the Rib Shack. One day Victor was in the music shop with Johnny when I came by. Johnny introduced me and long story short victor played "you cant hold no groove" on my trashy washburn bass. I swore I could never sound like Vic with that bass, but there I was watching Vic sound like Vic on my trashy bass and I realized/cemented in my head "TONE IS ALL IN YOUR HANDS"..... I am very thankful for that day for many reasons.
In an age of over-synthesized high tech guitars and effects, by comparison, these two musicians are packing hardly anything. I can't describe how cool that is.
Victor Wooten is a very nice man. Met him after a Béla Fleck show about 20 years ago, and he, Reggie & Béla were all very gracious, took the time to sign autographs, pose for photos, etc.
The Wooten brothers teach us that you don't need a high end gears and accessories to be a good musicians. Seeing them using Hair Ties as fret wraps makes me adore them.
I love the minimalist approach these guys have. You can buy the best gear and sound like crap. You can be a professional, world-renowned guitarist using a $200 Peavey amp from 1982 and some beat up pedals. Focus on your playing, kids!
All too true. And Peavey equipment is terribly underrated. It used to be Boogies, now everyone has to have Dumbles. Why not learn to play first, people?
There is an interesting video from Adam Neely (made years after this comment was posted) titled "Does Gear Matter?", where he uses as an example the fact that Victor Wooten uses the most expensive equipment you can get, while Regi uses really cheap equipment. It's an interesting watch. (spoiler alert - they're just using what they're confortable with)
I met Victor a few years ago when he was a guest at a guitar camp I did when I was 18, he was such a nice guy and incredibly well-spoken in what he was talking about. Really easy to talk to as well and I got a picture with him and he signed my guitar strap at the time, super nice dude and obviously one hell of an insane bass player as well
Dude is rockin out with some old Peavey amp and pedals-gear is overrated.People always ask, what bass does Victor play?Dude,i bet if you could give him a bag of cement,he'll still groove with it. Just learn and master your instrument, that's all.
yup, absolutely. You make due with what you have, all they playing comes through your fingers mostly, if you know what you're doing you can make it sound good, at least decent.
That's great that Regi has been using the same set up since I knew him about 25 years ago. I used to see him playing that Peavey at all his gigs. I think I remember when he got that Steinberger for demoing Tobias instruments at the NAMM show.Glad to hear he still has that orange Kramer with him. It was crazy what he could do with it. That family is the best, greatest musicians but super down to earth.
Man, I got to open for SMV at Montreux Jazz Fest in 2009 and backstage Victor asked me about my micropog, said it sounded like i had two basses on stage. I was in the crowd with some beautiful french girl when i heard Vic was backstage, so I ran back and we talked for a few minutes, seriously the happiest moments ive experienced!
Scrunchie on the neck...genius. ive been progressing with the slap technique, but agonize over how to keep those open strings from ringing. Thank you Vic!
Really well made basses plugged into Hartkes through a Boss effects processor. One boutique multi channel distortion. Just goes to show if you master your craft it doesnt take elite equipment to make you sound good. Nothing showy just reliable. amazing.
I love that the Wootens know that less is more. I play the drums among other instruments, but I always try to bring the least amount of gear to every gig, especially when I am playing with talented musicians. I don't need to fill all the spaces with tricks and gadgets. Every guitar player I play with wants to bring all their shit to every gig, no matter how small the room, or stage. It is my biggest peeve against most musicians. Even Reggie said, I like this guitar because it's easy to travel with. Victor said, I don't need all the extra stuff when I play with my brothers. This is clean, magic in it's purest form. I play regularly with a guitarist who will bring everything to acoustic gigs. His rig takes more time and space than just my drums alone. Sometimes I am only playing brushes on a snare and a hat and he gets pissed that I didn't bring the whole kit but we might be in a coffee house where being more than acoustic is just obnoxious. He will bring portable everything, set up a chain of pedals, including a loop that never works when playing live with 4 other musicians but he insists it's perfect for the gigs. Not too mention he starts loud and only gets louder every time we play. He is your typical Phacking Guitarists. I need to make him watch this video
I;m sorry for this comment but Rebecca is adorable, i love her interviews. PS: Man i can´t Regi W. is using a Peavey, man never give a s... for these amps before but it works really well for him. Cheers.
Seriously though, Rebecca does a great job interviewing: she does her homework, lets people talk, doesn't speak as though she's had a stroke (rare among journalism-types) and, yes, fills out a tight black t-shirt in the most hypnotic way. BTW it seems likely she's not delusional; the "don't hit on me" vibe is meant for all of us. ; )
These seem like genuinely awesome guys. Real down to earth. Just goes to show you don't need the most up to date flashy rig to sound awesome :-) just some talent in your fingers and your brain ;-)
@hopelesstrail I bought a snapjack cable a couple years ago, it's not clear like that it's just a regular one with a black cord and then the snapjack plugs. My friends have stepped on it, kicked it, walked on it, and last night, spilled chinese food on it which I quickly cleaned off. It's the only cable I own and it has never let me down. It's a 25-footer and it was $40, so if you play in a band or you like to gig solo, I definitely reccomend it above all other options.
I'm in a couple of Facebook gear groups that are super snobby, favouring high-end boutique pedals above either multi-effects units OR cheap standard Boss pedals. I love, love, love how these two both just low-key debunk the myth that you need to spend $1,000 on your effects rig to sound good. I feel they could show up for a gig and find out their whole rig is delayed, go to any local music store, spend $50 to rent a couple pedals and amps for the day, and just blow away a live audience of any size based on whatever their local chain music store had in stock.
Saw them two on their ‘soul circus’ tour. Awesome. He would hand his bass out to the crowd while the band was jammin. And whoever had the balls would throw down on the bass. 👍🏻
