Great Reaction Phillip, It would be great if you could react to Kim Thayil's & the late Great Chris Cornell R.I.P rig rundown
Really enjoyed this, thanks! Vernon Reid is one of my favourite guitarists. Saw him live in the 90’s three times and he and Living Colour were amazing.
that is a great idea! maybe a Billy Sheehan rig rundown next time??
Yep, more of these, Phil. It's good to get extra insight from someone who really knows a lot about a broad range of gear. This one was great for me especially, cos I love guitar synths, and a lot of guitar RUclipsrs are traditionalists who won't cover this sort of thing. So, thank you.
Great idea Phil! I love watching rig rundowns! When I go to Jam Nights at my cousin's, it takes me a while to set up in a little 12x12 room... and I always take s..t for my crazy pedals... but I always WOW everybody with my incredible tone and cool sounds! Best part... no one can figure it out my rig so they don't touch my stuff! LOL Happy Friday dude! Looking forward to the Live Stream Pod Cast later today! 😎🤘🎸
Vernon Reid is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. But I look at all those pedals and my brain starts melting!
This is a great series idea. Sometimes when I watch the rig rundowns, it’s a bit hard to conceptualize what the player is trying to do. It helps when someone that knows way more about gear and how it’s used explains it.
I think the man said it best himself when he said “ it’s bananas“
Attended Tom Morello‘s guitar camp a couple years ago, and Vernon was one of the instructors. Couldn’t have been a nicer guy. Also walked some of us curious campers through his insane looking rig. I have always loved his creativity and playing. The first time I heard the opening riff to “cult of personality” blasting from another dorm room I nearly fell over.
Vernon is amazing. I have had the great pleasure of taking to him about guitars and most importantly life and out experiences. The dude will always be on of my greatest influences. He has such a way with the instrument and arrangements. Loved seeing this reaction Phil, thank you.
These rundowns make more sense when I get an explainer from Phil every once in a while. LOL.
@@Scott__C Like the pegasus guy..... You watch one reaction video then your feed is nothing but garbage.
Saw him at a Hendrix tribute in Seattle many years ago. Guy is a genius .
Living Colour is the best live band I have ever seen. Insane quality on all musicians in the band. And Vernon really is a genius, but I did not know his gear was this complex. Crazy! ❤️
Everybody loves you when you're quad!
I've seen Vernon play several times and he produced some amazing sounds, but I had no idea his rig was this complex. Thanks for translating what's happening with his signal
Vernon Reed is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. His style and sound are unmatched by most.
One of my all time favorite musicians. I love that he has respect for and is influenced by so many different cats through recorded history... country blues men who started it all, through George Clinton, Lifeson and EVH... It all gets mixed up and comes out of his hands. Fast. LC forever!!
So he has a rig for different effects that can run anytime. This is really intriguing.
I do the same thing at home (to a WAY WAY lesser degree). ABY box to make a different signal path then to different amps. It's really nice to be able to able to have a clean + reverb signal to one amp then a fuzzed out tone to another. Wicked sound when playing slide.
I enjoyed this video quite a bit more than I expected to, it was successful Phil and you should do more.
Vernon Reid: Definitely not a "less is more" type of guy.
Neither is Doug Wimbish.
"Less is more? How can that be? It's impossible. More is more." - YJM
Vernon is such an amazing guitarist!
Read the title and immediately thought “that should be Living Colour’s Vernon Reid video”… and yes, just what I thought… super cool 😎
Vernon is an awesome guy, Phil ! good to see him with John. Vernon has a very interesting rig!
I got to record Vernon for the last Living Colour record...man that was something trying to wrap my head around his rig enough to record it! 😆 It was a ton of fun though.
What a setup !!! He always been looking for the new stuff and very singular way to put them together . Love it
Thank you Phill that was a great explanation of what is going on in Vernon's rig. I've been a fan since the first album and only got to see them live a couple of years ago in Melbourne, AU. If I had the opportunity I would go see then every week.
I think this is a great format! Not only was it crazy and entertaining but l feel like I learned a lot too! I would definitely watch more rig reactions!!
Guy knows his stuff. In so many of these rundowns, the player is almost clueless about what they are playing through.
I've been a big fan of Reid since I saw Living Color open for the Stones (I went for LC). He's the kind of guy that's meticulous about his gear and, no matter how complex, he knows exactly what to tweak to get the sound he wants. I saw him do a small club gig with his band Masque using a scaled down rig and it was amazing.
Ha watch a Joe Bonamassa rig rundown, simple for him to explain and he demonstrates with some cool playing.
One of the coolest dudes ever. I met him in NYC years ago
Living Colour is the band I've seen the most live - 5 or 6 times. In a show you forget about this complex stuff, the band's communication with the audience is just so good.
Guitar tech: “So Vernon do you want to go traditional pedals or Kemper or Line 6 or the laptop route with midi sounds?”
Vernon: “Yes.”
Dude, stop talking!
Phil is so right. Hearing him live is better than any taped version. He never gets talked about enough in the world of great guitars from that generation, but he should. Id love to go to a guitar clinic and listen to his thought process.
Sitting here with an amp and a couple of delay pedals and a lost look on my face lol!
Vernon Reid is one of favorite guitar players. Glad you did this as I had watched twice and have to admit got lost! Love the way he is using Mooer and Zoom with Kemper's and Mesa' s: as long as it sounds good. Living Colour rock, first saw them in Glasgow 1991, they were amazing. Top three all time gigs.
Do the old Creed rig rundown with Mark Tremonti. The rig was way overkill really, and his rig these days is WAY less complicated.
I do the same Philip. I have multiple boards and multiple other pedals with outputs to 5 different amps. All in my studio and it is a permanent setup. Thanks Philip.
Crazy stuff indeed! He's the exact opposite of those blues guys running straight into the amp.
The ONLY reaction video I have ever watched. Thanks this was good.
I love It when people use the available technology to make great music. He was way ahead of his time.
So much stuff going on with that rig, dude is a master
That was so cool-thanks for doing this. I really love Vernon’s playing-i used to try an imitate him with my playing!! Lol. He’s such an original. Man his rig seems like it requires a PHD to manage!!!!
Wow, I wasn't sure what to expect from a reaction video on a rig rundown, but this was very interesting hearing your perspective. Including the bit about the Korg tuner box. Pls make more of these. You bit off a big one with this crazy rig. =)
You should do a reaction to the Khruanbin rig rundown. It flies in the face of the concept of KYG, but I think you would respect the simplicity and tone he gets from some very attainable gear.
What a talent! I have a hard time playing and singing at the same time. Wow, how do you work this rig while playing live? Must have some drummer in him.
I remember watching this rig rundown and thinking “man, this guy thinks far far in advance… way ahead”
Streets Ahead
This was awesome. Thanks for the play by play. 😊
I really like love this video. You don't just react, you also educate
I saw Santana once and Vernon Reid came onstage as a special guest. This must be the most complicated and expensive rig rundown that I ever saw Premier Guitar do.
I grew up in Australia, and loved Living Colour so much. Seeing a black people was pretty rare in those days, so Vernon is more than a guitarist to me but also introduced me to social causes and struggles, "This is the Life" directly influenced my philosophy of life. Awesome player and thank you!
It turned you into a social justice warrior?
@@dimebolso938 i am feeling triggered. Where is my safe space???
@@svarthelikoptern Don't forget to grab your safety pin first.
It took ALL my brain power just to hook up my helix with the 4-cable-method...my head is spinning with this dude’s rig!!!!
Outstanding explanation. Even though I have a guitar I run through a Roland GR-55, most of what Mr. Reid has going on there went right over my head when I originally watched the Rig Rundown episode. Worth watching Living Colour videos if you aren't familiar with him. Double remarkable when you realize you're looking at the '80s.
I like your 'rig rundown reaction' idea. More! How about the Soundgarden rig rundown?
absolutely loved this video Phil!!!! please do more like this!
I like this style of video , Please do more.
Thanks for the reaction Phil! I felt like I learned a lot about the electronics of the instruments which I hadn’t before! Wondered why it looked like we only covered half the video but wouldn’t mind seeing more videos like these :)
Wow I loved Living color back in the day and Vernon's playing, but I gotta say I can't even imagine having to haul all this gear around and setting it up.
Saw them live a couple years in Charlotte, NC. Benefit show that they came down to play for free basically. Got to get a to close up look at that rig and talk to his tech for a few. It was a scaled down version because they were only doing that one show and it was insane. That guy earned his money.
I have seen these guys several times, great band, great musicians and I would encourage anyone if they come to your city go check them out.
I didn't know what to think the first time I saw this, but now I see it more as a hoarder mess kind of situation. I wouldn't want to see his interior at home.
I still liked your take on it and your insight, I hope you do this again.
I think there was a crazy rig by a RHCP guy a few years ago as well.
Really interesting, good to get the reaction, it fills in a lot of background.
Was just at a show front row 3 days ago. The stage crew couldn’t get Vernon’s rig on it was hilarious. It took them like 20 mins. Then they forgot to put on Vernon’s whammy bar he rolled his eyes 👀. Anyways the show went on and it was great was awesome to blow my ears out to that.
Love this episode I hope it becomes a series .... cheers
Dude, do more of these videos, this was awesome!
Same as what all guitar players have bought over time.... only difference is Vernon NEVER got rid of single thing he bought and so now just runs all of it, all of the time. Fun!
I was lucky to have dinner with Living Color when they opened for Alter Bridge in Sydney Australia. Good bunch of guys.
I really like rig rundowns. When I played live and now that I play at home as a pass time, I keep things quite minimal other than guitars. 3 pedals & one amp now, used to be 7 pedals & 3 amps. For me it's always been less stuff between the guitar and amp = less stuff to go wrong.
Do the Korn Rig Rundown please! This was pretty amazing and insightful
Love Vernon Reid, Love, Living Color, Love this channel. Win, win, win!
The staff in the venue look like they are setting up a wedding reception. Can you imagine Living Colour as your function band!
Thanks Phil. I get what he's doing, for the most part. I'm building a much simpler version of this for myself. Have a great day!
The added perspective along with the run-down was great. Nice idea!
Thanks Phil that was great I like the rig rundown‘s too but I may not have watched this one if it weren’t for you I don’t think I would ever want to run a rig like this but it’s very interesting to see how he’s doing It.
Im building a similar rig but much more consolidated. I designed it to be a hybrid digital and analog dawless rig where me and my bandmate can run drums, guitar, cello, a bass with a home made midi controller, vocals, synths and a sampler all with fully integrated effects and pedal boards all through one 6 channel mixer and send all our sound to front of house while still having complete control
defnitly do more of these phil. its nice to watch a gear rundown with someone who knows his gear.
I have the B9, it's great for background organ, it really adds some warmth for the single performer.
The "240 Resistance Mixer" concept is not complicated at all and is extremely useful. I've been doing this for years in my home studio. I use a Radial JD7 Injector rack unit to split the input into six primary out's. This is a very good unit because each path is isolated with separate transformers, and because it's powered you don't lose signal "juice" when split and each line is quiet, which can be a problem with passive units. (His active pickups probably help with signal loss, and he has so much horse power on the back end of each signal path that it probably is not an issue.) I first experimented with this idea many years ago with one of those Voodoo Labs "Amp Selector" floor switchers which has four outs. It was pretty good, but the switches were always going bad. Voodoo Labs has had problems with their switch inventory, and i got tired getting it fixed, so i looked for something else and the JD7 solved the problem. Radial and others make several floor switchers but i really wanted more than two or three outs. Never used that DOD unit ... if Vernon uses it, it must work well. They're inexpensive too !
I like this video a lot. Don't know if I understood what was going on, But it was really cool. Do more please.😆
The Mike Campbell rig rundown is my favorite
wow what a great video, thanks for the rundown of the rig rundown! haha
With EHX B9, C9, Key9, Mel9 pedals you don't even need a A/B box because they have a Dry out that, when plugged in, sends the pure guitar signal to a guitar amp and the normal out becomes an effect-only out that you can send to another amp or directly to P.A.
Great vid, I’d watch this kind of thing again!!
I'm glad you did this, Phil! I watched this when it was new and couldn't understand it at all!!
I'd like to see more of this.
Some suggestions: Adam Jones, Alex Lifeson, and Page Hamilton.
Phil- Found ur Glenn Fricker Guitcon videos...very entertaining the way you closed out the video. Almost fell outta my chair laughing. You don't swear often so funny as heck when you do. Love all you've done for millions of us working Joes. Put so much info into our hands. Appreciate you, and F. You Glenn.
the MusicomLab Parallelizer does a great job to run effects in parallel , in stereo - worth every penny.
Great video - would love more rig reactions!
Wow. This is kinda mind boggling. Super cool, but hard to wrap my head around it. Dude is super smart though. I’d never think about 90% of this stuff. Rock on.
Very interesting! My brain is running now
Great video Phil! Please please do more!!
Loved this Phil, insane set up!!
Thanks Phil. Love your content.
Really liked this video and look forward to more like this format
Phil....Great way to enlighten us! I wonder....does all this keep you up at night? I would love to hear your detailed breakdown on how EVH got his unique sounds and tones. Ed was like The Beatles....there will never be another.....FYI Phil, you're the best!!
Realy nice! Looking forward for more!
Man that's a lot of gear. I'd be scared of a cable or power supply going down mid set!
His guitar looks awesome!
this is the only reaction type video i will watch
I grew up listening to Vernon. I now realize he has the mind of sound engineer.
Fantastic video! Loved it! So grateful for you and the content you provide for us!!!
m.
Great series idea Phil! Rig Rundowns are terrific but often I am sure some of the stuff goes over people's heads. So useful to have you break down and explain what's happening. And indeed, what a great point about a world class pro musician like Vernon not caring at all about brand pedigree for his tools - a lesson many amateur and hobbyists seem to forget.
Yup I like the parallel method better, I was confused for awhile but it sounds awesome 😎🎸.
What a crazy setup
Veeery interesting!!!! Thanks Philip!!!
I like this new segment.
Great breakdown, finally someone with a bigger pedalboard than me lol. Didn't realize you're in Scottsdale, we're practically neighbors. Check out Pete Thorn's rig he used when playing with the Classic Rock show, pretty cool setup to cover a lot of guitar tones.
This is a cool idea, Phillip!
