One of the great classic rock songs played live with the great Ian Gillan on vocals. Song is from 'In Rock ' an iconic album from 1970. I saw them live 1971- 72 in Glasgow. Awesome band. Haven't sunscribed yet ! This is a first with you.
Ian Gillan is recognized as GOAT singers for a rock band. Blackmore GOAT guitarist. Two of these musicians were classically trained. This song was the epitome of pain and passion depicting the Viet Nam War in the US and the Cold War in the UK. I'm not sure about your review.
Review is a strong word. We just watched it and reacted to it for the first time while we were hanging out

The audience that you obsessed about were being quiet so that we could enjoy this high quality recording of an epic performance by some fine musicians, fifty years later.
And also, so that internet content creators of the future would have something to obsess about, instead of just watching and listening to the musicians perform.
I totally agree! Focusing so much on the audience reaction during one of the greatest live performances in music history was sacrilege...and a disservice to those trying to hear this masterclass on progressive rock by true music professionals!
I mean if TV producers did that with the audience so internet content creators will talk about it in the future, they're geniuses. Right now, I think they took this performance and turned it into something visually strange. I get quiet.. kinda... I don't expect the audience would be making much noise or heard much during the performance itself. There was multitrack audio consoles that could control that at this point. But also no one was moving. If you're not expecting that, it's visually distracting and takes away from the song and the artist's performance.
@@secondhandreactions Only if you let it. I guess there's too much going on with the musicians expertise on their instruments, for me to be distracted by an audience that's doing nothing.

You’ve probably watched this a ton of times and love it. I get it. Try to understand from my point of view. Also, I did mention the insane music going on here and we all clearly enjoyed the video and had fun watching it together.
@@secondhandreactions High horse, lol. Visually weird AF? Yeah, the lady in blue who looks terminally bored is visually weird, I'll give you that. But for the bulk of the video, the cameras are almost entirely on the musicians, the audience appears incidentally in the background of some shots, sure, but I didn't find them hard to ignore at all.
But guess what the intended center of attention is? It's the band, playing the music. I didn't find myself fixated on the audience the first time I watched it. I found the musicians much more interesting. The lady in blue popped out, she looks like her friends must have dragged her there against her will or something. But other than that momentary distraction, your perspective is alien to me. If the audience was whooping and hollering and making a lot of noise, that would have been distracting to me. To each their own I guess!😸
Hi all, I was a Hammond C-3 Keyboard player, Like Jon Lord RIP 🙏in the 1970s and this song was from 1968
Thanks for the reaction guys - knew thus would be right in Sue's lane lol. All live, no gimmicks, no gizmos - just pure talent. I struggle to decide which is best - the insane vocals, the ridiculous organ playing (to be that precise on the keys is just wow), the obligatory guitar solo (made to look so simple) or the pacing of the drums and bass.
So blessed to have this recording kept for posterity from a different era.
This was a fun one. Thanks Chris. Even though it was from 1970 somehow I missed it. Appreciate the suggestions! Sue loved it
Yeah, this was great. I got love anything that brings me back to some of my best buddies.
TV audiences were normally told to sit still, be quiet, and hold their applause until the end. The band just released a new track - same singer and drummer, not sure about the rest of the band.

The audience was told not to make any noise during the song because they were recording it. This song is "controlled chaos" and one of the wildest vocal performances ever filmed. How many singers do you know who could bust that out over three octaves?

Terrible call by TV producers. OK.. be quiet for the recording, fine,, but no one was even moving back there. There's this amazing music happening, and no one seems to notice? Fucking weird man. It was like seeing the twilight zone to someone who wasn't expecting it. Completely distracting. I've added this song to my regular rotation now. Its awesome. Deep Purple is a band I've known about peripherally my whole life but never dug into. Even though a lot of folks here don't like this reaction, I regret nothing. I'm grateful to @ChrisJones-we4in for making the suggestion. This was the first real step on the Deep Purple path for me and I was happy to share it was Sue and Lisa.

@@secondhandreactions Just accept that the audience was told to keep quiet so as not to affect the live recording. Once you've grasped that concept you can concentrate on what you've heard.

It was a recording not a concert, silence was a condition even tho the audience was allowed to partake.

Maybe you should try to figure out what the song is about and you’d understand the ‘screaming is about. Not one of you ever mentioned the lyrics .
@@davidarnel4022 I can see why you think that if it’s an important or favorite song of yours. On a first listen while hanging out with friends, it’s easy to miss the context of the lyrics. Sometimes it takes a couple listens for it to sink in. There’s a lot of reaction channels out there that will hyper focus on lyrics and break down the music. We’re just hanging out checking out some cool tunes people have recommended. ✌️

This is one of my friend Gerri's favorite bands so I got to listen to a lot of Deep Purple driving around and hanging out during college just became part of me I guess.
@@neighborsue My Mother always used to sing Lazy to me when i was younger.. Was a teen at the time. lol Child in time is just a classic track though. Inhabits that 70's vibe perfectly.

Such an incredible live performance, this song makes 'Smoke on the water' sound really dull. The audience vibe is such a contrast to the performance that for me it adds to the overall impact. I'd love to hear from the audience now to know what they were feeling! If you dismiss the pain and passion in Gillan's vocals then sadly you are missing the point of this anti-war masterpiece.

I’m 61..listen to the lyrics.. those screams are iconic they are about death. The original is from their album in rock and is also on their live album made in Japan that is the definitive version. Also other great songs by them are highway star-space trucken Smoke on the water-lazy-fireball-black knight and woman from Tokyo just to name a few.
@@ponytrekker8996 61? Why the name calling? You should know better. It's easy to be brave behind a computer, but if we were hanging out we could've had a cool discussion about this. I'll just say this, on a first listen it's impossible to digest everything. Especially when there's such insane musicianship happening, and an odd AF visual background of the most inhuman, robotic audience ever. To my eyes, it was like a twilight zone episode. That was a terrible choice from the TV producers. Totally distracting.

I notice that you, just like the people in the crowd, are not rocking out. As far as I'm concerned, a complete natural reaction, as this musical experience had never been seen before. I'd be stunned had I been in the audience. I would pay attention, not dance.

@@tedr3586 You cared enough to stop what you were doing to comment. And really? You don’t think that’s weird or even unfortunate? No grooving or anything allowed in the crowd? That’s terrible. I strongly disagree. The TV producers fucked this video by making that decision and making it weird forever. They looked like hostages.
@@secondhandreactions All of the music recorded in live studios back then were the same; the producers and directors wanted the music and not the screaming fans, so audiences were asked to sit quietly in their seats.
Sadly I was quite disappointed at all three of your reactions to this amazing but sad song, that was about the Vietnam war. You should watch some of the reaction videos from qualified vocalists who all praise Ian Gillan's amazing vocal range, instead of laughing at it.
Personally I was more into bands like Hawkwind, Edgar Broughton and Atomic Rooster as well as Amon Düül 2 than Deep Purple, who I saw as too commercial at the time; (being a typical naïve teenager). I wasn't a massive fan of Deep Purple back then, but still purchased all of their early albums and singles up to Perfect Strangers. When this was first screened I loved it. I've recently (after getting back into vinyl ) bought their Live in Tokyo five sided album recorded in 2001; (sadly Richie Blackmoor was replaced by Steve Morse on lead, but the original line up apart from Steve were there).
I was also surprised that none of you had supposedly never heard this song (though that wasn't qualified in your video {I think}); you all look like hippy rockers, so was dumfounded that you'd never hear this song before.
Have you checked out any Hawkwind? If not I implore you to check out their Space Ritual double album; the original release from 1973 and not later versions (they did a repeat concert almost a decade ago covering all of the original songs, (with Brian Blessed replacing Michael Moorcock on one of the poetry sections) and one of the original members (Nik Turner) after being sacked from the band formed a band called Space Ritual and went on tour releasing their own version of Space Ritual called Space Ritual 1994.
If you do get around to checking them out, unfortunately there's no early video footage of the band apart from some that were taken by the BBC for their single Silver Machine single release, with Lemmy (of later Motorhead fame) on Bass and Vocals and one other recorded for the Marc Bolan Show and screened just before his death when they had a brief stint as The Hawklords singing Quark Strangeness & Charm (not one of my favourite tracks). However, if you can do without a pretty video of the band playing, I highly recommend either 'Orgone Accumulator', 'Time We Left This World Today', 'Brainstorm' or 'Master of the Universe'. Alternatively check out Warriors on the Edge of Times 'Magnu'
Like I said, I wasn't a big fan of Deep Purple having only several of their albums; whereas I have almost 180 Hawkwind albums ( both vinyl and CD); most official with a smattering of bootleg).
@@stephenbrown318 Hey - thanks for taking the time to comment. I mentioned somewhere else, Deep Purple has been on peripheral my whole life. I just never dug in. They've been completely off my radar until this reaction. We had no idea what we were about to watch. The video definitely through me and I don't think was the best way to first ingest this song. We are not here pretending to be qualified to break down music and analyze it as other reactors do. We just like hanging out and checking out some cool music and expressing whatever comes up. I understand that type of reaction isn't for everyone, but some people seem to like it, and that's what we do on this channel, and we're having a great time. I wish this reaction was received better, but I'm happy with it. It captures a fun moment with my friends, and Deep Purple is now back on my radar. Thanks for the suggestions too! I never heard of Hawkwind, but I could see us revisiting some classic music we've missed. I'll add them to our list.

What is wrong with you three? I watch these every night and Everyone thinks Deep {Purple are Top of the Top and you three are out of touch. Not watching any or your reactions again........
This style of reaction channel obviously is gonna miss key parts about the music they are critiquing if they are talking on top of it...rather than pausing...and really giving respect to the artists they are critiquing.
If they could butcher the reaction to one of the most stunning live music performances ever... then they can butcher any song they react to.
Don’t watch reaction videos if you don’t want people’s honest reactions, it’s simple enough.
