Funny I've read all of the Cosmere so far, but Era2 Mistborn is some of my favorite Cosmere books. I just love Wax and Wayne, and their interactions so much.
This book HUGELY benefitted from a reread of mistborn 4-6 before reading this. My original lukewarm reaction to era 2 was amped up a lot and made me excited and sad to say goodbye to most of these characters

I think Words of Radiance might be my favourite. I would love to erase it from my brain and reread it for the first time. But I had a lot of fun reading Warbreaker :). And my favourite character is Raoden... so there's that :D
My favorite is either Words of Radiance or Rhythm of War. The ending to Rhythm of War hit really close emotionally to me, but had some stuff I didn't love. Words of Radiance had probably the highest average enjoyment, but doesn't have as strong an emotional resonance.
I have never read a book this fast. I could not stop. I was prepared for this book to be mildly satisfying and it blew me away. Thanks to book tube for letting me know about all these great books.
The cosmere stuff was fucking unreal. The gloves are certainly off. I cried, laughed, was FLOORED by the characters we met, among other things I can't mention. The meelan epilogue was WILD
I didnt read it yet but im ok with it being so cosmere aware. There has to be some point in the books that tell you directly that this is an interconected universe and to go read the other books without needing some google search or a friend to tell you. This is the seventh book in the mistborn series, I think it is ok to tell this to the reader if they already read seven full novels. edit: I´ve already finished it and although there are some parts that could feel confusing to mistborn only fans I think its intentional because we see those things through the eyes of characters that also are discovering the cosmere for the first time
While I've actually really loved Mistborn Era 2 (I think it may be my favorite thing in the Cosmere even), unlike Daniel, the fact he mentions that this book feels more "Sherlockian" makes me even more excited, as a fellow giant Sherlock Holmes fan. I wish I could read it right now, but I have to wait until I finish Rhythm of War, which I just started.
As a big Era 2 fan, I'm halfway through The Lost Metal and am loving it so far. I had to check a couple of things in The Coppemind because my memory's not the best, but I'm fan girling over some of these crossovers and reveals.
Would definitely appreciate a "pre-read" Cosmere list! I've just recently gotten beyond the six (and a half) Mistborn books into other Cosmere books and have only read Warbreaker as well as The Way of Kings from Stormlight. I'm willing to wait to read this one though until I've "caught up" on my other Cosmere reading because I'm loving all the Sanderstuff!
You should finish Stormlight and read Elantris before you get to the Lost Metal. You can read the first 3 books of era 2 now though, if you want. Also, reading the White Sand omnibus would also enhance your experience of this a bit…but you should wait for the updated version from Dragonsteel.
Of course the more you read the more you'll know however IMO the only 2 you must read before this are Mistborn: Secret History and The Emperor's Soul. Both are novella's. There will be cosmere references you won't get but those 2 at the very LEAST you should read before Lost Metal.
I’m in the same place. I’ve read Elantris and Warbreaker, but I was waiting to start Stormlight until I finished all of the Mistborn books. So I had been waiting for this one to come out before putting my toe into Stormlight. Now I’m hearing it has Stormlight references, and I’m all, “Oh, f--.”
I went to the Dragonsteel con last year and I loved it. We stayed an extra 3 days afterwards. It was on Thanksgiving week last year so we had our Thanksgiving dinner at Denny's but it was definitely an experience I won't forget. I love Utah. It's a really beautiful state.
I absolutely Loved The Lost Metal, im actually a bigger fan of Era 2 than Era 1. The First 3 books are amazing but the flow and style and humor for Era 2 are right up my alley. I’m really excited to read the 5th book from Stormlight and whatever else Sanderson puts out next to see where all these connections lead to! Daniel please post deep spoiler review for Lost Metal soon! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts and theories of connections to Cosmere.
Just finished reading The Lost Metal, and I LOVED it! I thought it was SO GOOD! A little late to the party, but it also let me read things more closely together, which is great.
Daniel a “con review” video by itself would be really cool. A lot of people like myself are very interested in it but unable to make time / afford to make the trip out there. If you find time to make a video about it I personally would love it
Honestly one of his best books was just wow. I read it in about 5 hours I can’t believe how fast it went. I loved it and can’t wait for more gloves off stuff
Imagine reading the lost Metal though without the context of the cosmere, if you're intrigued it could be the snapping point for cosmere intrigue and get that person to read and fall in love with the rest, because we get many tastes here. Just a thought.
I was glad I waited to read this book until after I had finished just about everything else in the Cosmere except White Sand (I'm not a graphic novels fan) and Tess of the Emerald Sea. This book is definitely one where I feel you have to have read the rest of the Cosmere books.
You don't have to read other stuff. You don't need to know about Stormlight, Warbreaker etc. I never understood this. You can read a book and not know everything,
I've been spreading it out over the last couple days, just doing about a quarter a night so I'll probably finish on Friday. It's extremely difficult to stop but I like to savor new books over a few days instead of burning through them. I'm a little over halfway now and I'm loving it. The gloves are certainly off and I can't wait to see how much more there is to come. I'm actually pleasantly surprised at how Cosmere heavy this book is. If TLM was this open about the wider Cosmere then i cant wait to see how deep SA5 will go. This has been my favorite Era 2 book so far so I can't wait to see where it goes in the back half.
One note about the escalation of interconnection, I get the impression Brandon has been mapping out highly interconnected events the whole time, and the light amount we were fed was a fraction of what was happening "behind the scenes." So I think this time he was just showing a larger part of what he's normally ploting out, but keeping in-house, and filled it out into main story meat.
Only about halfway through this book, but I am really enjoying it so far! I wasn't as big a fan of Mistborn era 2 the first time I read it but throughout this year I have reread the cosmere in preparation for this book and I really enjoyed Mistborn era 2 on my second read through. I think Wayne is quite funny and his various voices are even better if you listen to the audio version.
Sanderson said in his podcast that he's been planning the Stormlight arc 1 ending for over 10 years.... I'm sure this cosmere coordination planning has been going on for a long ass time like you suggested
I was front row for your Wheel of Time panel (I was on it the previous year!) & I came up to say hey to Matt & it killed me not to harass you! TLM was great. I’m partial to era 2, I prefer it over era 1, & I definitely think the ending of e2 was superior to e1! Emotional but in the right way, the connections were a Cosmere fan’s dream, & everything just clicked beautifully. I am forever impressed with Sanderson, what a literary angel.
I've been a Sanderfan since he wrote the end of WoT, and I felt similarly about the Wax and Wayne series (with the exception of loving Bands of Mourning, that one was awesome!) I haven't finished Lost Metal yet, but I am excited to since we are of a similar mind. I definitely fully intend on coming to Dragonsteel for Stormlight 5!
Hi! I read the Lost Metal with my only other Cosmere reads being The Way of Kings, all Mistborn main books so far and all I've heard in most non-spoiler lives and Q&As of Brandon. And with that said, I was SOLD on The Lost Metal, and it never felt like too much Cosmere stuff. It almost did at many points, but EVERY time I felt like I was gonna fall off, Brandon stopped escalating for a few chapters, and by the time the Sanderlanche kept on growing, I was sold for more and fully trusting Brandon again. The Lost Metal is one of the dearest books to me I've ever read, and it earned it all the way through, without relying on me having rest the rest of the Cosmere!
I cannot tell you how excited I am to hear how positively you reacted to this book. I'm in the process of rereading the whole Mistborn saga before I start on The Lost Metal and I'm already so hyped up for it that I would've been utterly devastated if it was bad. But hearing how much you enjoyed it gives me even more hope that I'm going to love this book. Thanks for the review!
As someone new to the cosmere (only read mistborn series so far though I've bought most of the rest) I'm definitely looking forward to your 'what to read first' section in your next video
Ey! I'm glad that you enjoyed the con. I live in Utah and I forget that the mountains are sometimes impressive, so it was good to hear you liked them! 😅
It was so good to get to meet you at the Dragonsteel Convention. You are welcome to Utah anytime. Next time, if you forget your towel, let me know and will make sure I bring you one! Loved that you laughed at my comment. Made me feel great!
I was really lucky because this year I ended up reading a ton of Brandon Sanderson. All of mistborn up to The Bands of Mourning, and then I got through the whole Stormlight Archive and then I read Arcanum Unbounded, and then The Lost Metal just came out and I finished it yesterday and the order that I read it all in was so perfect to understand the opening lore in this book!
I'll save my thoughts on Cosmere connections for the spoiler review, but I don't think the list is quite as long as you think. I think this is my second favorite Wax & Wayne. The first is Shadows of Self, because that one has some great character development for Wax and Steris. I also love the mystery thriller element to that one; the twist is probably Sanderson's best. This book made Wayne grow up a lot, which I appreciated. I think the first half really took aim at criticism of Wayne from prior books, which was important for the ending. Will probably have more to say in the spoiler video, but don't want to say too much in fear of spoiling something.
I am about halfway through it... loving it so far. Note: I really enjoyed the first 3 books in Era 2... I enjoy the humor with Wayne... so, it's been all good for me.
Brandon said pretty early on he wanted the Mistborn novels to be the marking of time, and the primary Cosmere interactions. The most stuff about the Cosmere was intended to be revealed through them. Before this, Secret History was the most Cosmere novel. I'm interested in the timeline though.
I thought Oathbringer already had an excellent Sanderlanche which brings me to tears even after reading it a few times. If this Sanderlanche is that good, it must be quite something.
I really enjoyed the book. It's so cool to see how the cosmere is growing and getting more interconnected. Can't wait to learn more about the different factions of worldhoppers.
I loved it. The Cosmere connections were absolutely amazing. I know I missed some Easter eggs, so I hope I can find a comprehensive list somewhere. Also, I can't WAIT to see your spoiler review!
Finished the whole book the day it released! Absolutely loved it and super pumped that Brandon is going to go completely unhinged with future crossovers!
Great vid as always, your one of my favorite youtubers and Brandon Sanderson is my favorite modern writers. In fact I have begun to write my own book, I would just like to say you've inspired my writing style as much as any writer I have read. Love you man.
Dragonsteel Con was so much fun! Glad I got to meet ya for the few seconds you had! As someone that DID have to pay for his own ticket, can confirm - TOTALLY WORTH IT! I'm going every year!
Would definitely need to sit on the experience a minute longer, but I think I’m with you, Daniel… This might be some of Sanderson’s best! And by the way, thanks for all the awesome content you put out! You make me think and laugh in equal measures, and your channel was the one that got me into BookTube as a whole. So thanks!
Hey Daniel, how about a video idea with 6-10 authors being pited against one another and each rated for skills in categories such as: Characters, Prose, Magic systems, World building/Settings, Storyline/Plotting, Story conclusions/Resolutions, and Overall skill with narrative specifics (fight scenes, horror, romance, bread crumbs/leading, humor, emotion). Could be fun!
I really enjoy the Era 2 books. Partly because I appreciate the humor, partly from the Cosmere tie-ins, and partly because I am also named Wayne. Dragonsteel was tons of fun - I didn't get to meet you but attended a couple of your panels. You did a great job.
Hey Daniel great review, was great getting to meet you at, dragonsteel and attending somw of your panels, espexially loved hearing yalls thoughts in cosmere tech panel.
I love the interconnection. The parts of Mistborn that flowed into the Stormlight Archive were a highlight for me. I assumed at some point it was going to start weaving in more based on how things were going in the books thus far. I can't wait to get some more meat for the characters, I enjoyed them in the first 3 books, but I do agree that there was some lacking compared to the 1st series and Stormlight. The only annoying thing is that (thanks to you and Merphy) my TBR is freakin huge and I can't not slip this book to the top. I'm on book 11 of WoT and want to finish that up before I move on to anything else. I was wanting to finish the Arcane Ascension series by Andrew Row next... Sanderson does not make it easy to stick to a TBR plan.
On Shadows of Self now, halfway after I started and finished first era because of your posts, so ty. Bought the ebook of The Last Metal today. Like Wax and Wayne, especially Wayne, very much, so it was a logical step to make. Keep enjoying them, I hope. And to emerse completely in Sanderson, I got the Stromlight series too. something to read the coming wintermonths 🙂
Cannot wait for the big epic crossover Sanderson mentioned many years ago. If I recall properly, we won’t be getting that until after both Stormlight 10 and Mistborn Era 3.
I binge read this one over the course of two evenings. Suffice to say, this is one of my favourites so far! Some really powerful moments from all characters throughout, and so many ‘Leonardo DiCaprio Pointing Meme’ moments.
I have not picked it up yet, probably will around Christmas since I just bought a dozen plus used books to get through. . .but goodness just by what you're saying I already know I am going to love. I personally like Era 2 better than Era 1. . .so. . . I'm scared, please don't hurt them.
Just finished this like an hour ago and it has made me so hype for the next Stormlight Archive book but also completely terrified because this one absolutely destroyed me emotionally and I wasn’t as attached to this set of characters as I am to some of the Stormlight ones.
"I've just finished reading Mistborn, its great! Now lets read era tw-" "Wait, before you read that there are some more books you have to read" "More like how much?" 30.....
I have always liked 2nd Era, Wayne is one of my favs characters from the Cosmere, and I loved all his chapters in this last book, half book is a sanderlache, and you get a lot of answers but you have so much more questions later, I can't wait for 3rd Era and SLA 5th book...
From the perspective of someone without any knowledge of Cosmere outside of Mistborn, I understood The Lost Metal just fine. It might have been more confusing if I didn’t read Secret History though. From that story, I could surmise that Ruin/Preservation aren’t the only gods, and that there other beings like them that could threaten the Scadriel (that would logically have their own magic systems associated with them). That’s all I needed to accept how Kelsier was still alive with a crew of people doing unfamiliar magic.
Hi 👋 I hope u alright?? I can’t believe what they did with ur video, you were the one of the channel I’ve subscribed years ago.... wish u all the best always like watching all ur videos!! Thanks for the review video!! Happy reading to you!! 🎥⚔️🍁
Goodness I can't wait to read The Lost Metal!!!! I already have it ready to go but I've been re reading a bunch of cosmere books and I'm currently halfway thru WoR and listening to Era 2 again so IDK if I should finish the re read or jump right in ugggghhhhhh!!! I'm a die hard so I don't really need a refresher or whats going on in the Cosmere at this point but I'm still loving the re read!!
I'm almost finished with the Mistborn trilogy (2/3rds of the way through Hero of Ages) and I'm LOVING it (got me back into regular reading). What Sanderson books should I go to next? I've seen a lot online about which order to read things in because of Cosmere stuff but honestly can't decide. I'm thinking of going to Stormlight?
Dang, it's premiering at midnight for me. I've already read the book, but I really like Daniel's takes on books (if I don't always agree, they still help me verbalise my feelings) oh well, I guess this is one for tomorrow.
I'm currently only about halfway through the book, but I did a re-read of Alloy, Shadows, and Bands leading up to it (because I'm a forgetful nonce who could barely remember what had happened in those books) and the second reading, especially marathon-reading all of them in a row really elevated this era in my mind. I remember thinking Wax and Wayne were fun characters with comedy that I enjoyed on my first time through, but I found myself connecting to the characterization WAY more when I got to back-to-back them all in a row. I very much so am a sucker for the cowboy aesthetic and six-gun shootouts, so the action has definitely carried me through it all, but I was really surprised how much more cohesive things like the Kandra and the introduction of the Southern Continent felt on a second pass.
I began TLM today with some degree of anxiety over the length of the book (coming from a Stormlight marathon it looked wayyyy too light for a finale) but damn, if Daniel says it's just behind TWoK for character work my expectations are sky-high. I read on my commute and am now fully expecting to cry in public and miss a few stops. And I couldn't be happier, _let's go_
I’m currently half way through and thinking this may be my least favorite cosmere book yet. So I’m thrilled to hear you were at the same place and ended up loving it!
Having just finished it, and never having read any other cosmere stuff (except all the previous mistboem stuff obviously), I would still recommend it. Cosmere interactions didnt make huge amounts of sense when going through it, but you kinda got it through the characters eyes, so it made sense cus they didnt get it either. By the end of it, most necessary elements seemed explained and it was all good. would recommend.
Could you do (or have you done already) a reading order guide to get what you think is the best Cosmere experience? I’ve only read Mistborn 1-3 at this point and long enough ago that I’d need to do a reread but I’m totally into delving into all the cosmere connections!
I've only read Mistborn, and honestly I felt beat over the head by this book. I LOVED the hard magic of mistborn, and even if it's just because there wasn't time to develop it, so much of this book just felt like flat-out unexplained "just go with it this is god-stuff" magic. Felt so many hanging threads, and felt like I was getting more closure on some larger-cosmos things than things that actually matter to Scadriel.
just started the cosmere this year, done with stormlight and in the middle of the bands of mourning. I was so close to getting finished before the release. very excited anyway =D
Thank you for the heads up! I've only partially read the Cosmere books (Mistborn Era 1, Elantris, Alloy of Law, and a bunch of the short stories) and Era 2 was next on my list. Knowing that the gloves are coming off for Lost Metal, I'm going to skip Era 2 until I finish Warbreaker, the 4 available of Stormlight Archive books, and that unpublished White Sand prose novel (not much of a graphic novel reader).
I'm a little behind on Sanderson, so I'll want to watch the first part of your spoiler review to see if i read enough yet lol. I'm in a reading funk but mistborn is my fave so hopefully this can get me out and get me reading again lol
Man, I love Brandon Sanderson. I love his stories. Especially Stormlight. But it’s starting to get “you gotta read this before that” kinda thing. It’s definitely taking away the fun for me. Sure each series is good it’s own but now I’m always wondering if I’m missing stuff because I was “required” to read some other book in the cosmere.
I'm a big cosmere fan but I've always been opposed to the concept of reading orders and letting people organically discover what was going on themselves. I'm the kind of person who doesn't even tell them the cosmere exists and I definitely enjoy the less in your face writing of before. While I always knew it'd eventually be gloves off I guess I'm sad that it's happening sooner rather than later
This book was the end of Mistborn era 2 but it was the start of "Cosmere era 1". If he keeps this level of cosmere interaction up in his other books they are gonna be soooooo fun to read as someone who loves the cosmere interaction.

I wish I could read it right now, but I have to wait until I finish Rhythm of War, which I just started.
Just finished Part 1… it’s my favourite book of Era 2 so far.
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this one
Oh and the short stories too - particularly The Emperor’s Soul and Sixth of the Dusk (to a lesser extent).
@@Windupchronic The Stormlight references are minor. IMO You can safely read Stormlight after Mistborn.
I went to the Dragonsteel con last year and I loved it. We stayed an extra 3 days afterwards. It was on Thanksgiving week last year so we had our Thanksgiving dinner at Denny's but it was definitely an experience I won't forget. I love Utah. It's a really beautiful state.
Thank you for you compliments!
I could watch the Sanderlanche gif all day!!!
It was so cool to meet you at Dragonsteel!! Also I’m not super far into the new one but so far I absolutely love it.
Sanderson should've just left Mistborn as a trilogy. The original story was perfection!
I just picked up the book from the store and your spoiler free review skyrocketed the hype I already had. Thanks, Goblin lord.
Oh this was slick. The foreshadowing in the prologue was alittle too in your face for Our Bowler hatted friend
Hey Daniel, I've so far read all Mistborn, but only one Stormlight.
How much Stormlight would you recommend reading before Mistborn 2.4?
Glad you enjoyed Utah! The mountains are amazing
Can't wait to read the book, and I fully agree with everything you said about the convention. It was a blast, and it was a pleasure to meet you, too!
Happy to see you there!
Daniel you should absolutely do a cosmere timeline video! I think it would be fun to watch
So thanks!
I actually work at one of the printing shops that prints the t shirts & embroiders some of the other merch, so thanks for appreciating the merch 😆
It’s nice to see you actually talk about a book for the first time in a while
Hey Daniel, how about a video idea with 6-10 authors being pited against one another and each rated for skills in categories such as: Characters, Prose, Magic systems, World building/Settings, Storyline/Plotting, Story conclusions/Resolutions, and Overall skill with narrative specifics (fight scenes, horror, romance, bread crumbs/leading, humor, emotion).
I haven't been excited for Mistborn era 2 but you just made it very intriguing. Great balanced review, thanks!
Also a huge SLC fan. Freaking love it there so much.
Come back to Utah any time my friend!
It was awesome seeing you at dragonsteel! Dragonsteel is definitely a go every year type of event. So much fun and so many great people there.
Now lets read era tw-"
"Wait, before you read that there are some more books you have to read"
"More like how much?"
30.....
New camera / lens looks pretty sick bruh
Hey Daniel, finished the book an hour ago, just in time for the video, can't wait for the full review
Hi 👋 I hope u alright?? I can’t believe what they did with ur video, you were the one of the channel I’ve subscribed years ago.... wish u all the best always like watching all ur videos!! Thanks for the review video!! Happy reading to you!! 🎥⚔️🍁
Loved loved loved The Lost Metal. Definitely the best of Era 2
I cannot wait to make it out to Dragonsteel one year... I am thinking the one that will coincide Stormlight 5 is going to be the time.
Hope you enjoy it! Though to each their own :)
@@DanielGreeneReviews Update: Holy Sanderlanche! Suffice to say, I enjoyed it greatly.
I NEED that Sanderlanche gif
Could you do (or have you done already) a reading order guide to get what you think is the best Cosmere experience? I’ve only read Mistborn 1-3 at this point and long enough ago that I’d need to do a reread but I’m totally into delving into all the cosmere connections!
I'm only up to chapter 22, but so far, I'm loving it. Especially the HUGE Comsere info dumps and crossovers.
I LOVE WAX AND WAYNE. Love the connections. Love the characters.
Thanks for giving a good review. I love era 2. Love the lighthearted buddy humor.
I'm so fucking stoked for The Lost Metal. MORE COSMERE!
Daniel! You were snubbed in that super fight!
