Welcome to what sorta counts as the Halloween video! I know very well that very few things scare a member of the FGC more than a Sumo character, so therefore this video is positively terrifying! All the complaining about Honda at the start of SF6 always struck a sore spot with me, so basically in this video let me show you what an ACTUALLY GOOD sumo character is, cause it can get really, really messed up lol. If ya learned something in this video, leave a like why not!?
Hinako having a full corner carry invincible reversal sounds insane Its a very different take on the traditional "shoryuken" also, not all sumo rikishis are super duper mega heavy (all are super strong though) most spectators love seeing the smaller wrestlers taking down the giants through "superior sumo"
I still remember the first time I tried KoF 2002 UM online and my opponent pick Hinako and just utterly destroyed me before I could even think. Havn't touched that games online since.
Like if you don't know most kof chars its always gonna be a bad knowledge check, but Hinako moreso than most lol. I didn't even get into more wild stuff like backturn combos. Full invincible command grab is enough to break most people
I appreciate that when Hinako is being shown in 2002 UM, the other side is Vice, another absolutely terrifying grappler. Getting bodied by Shermie was what brought me to actually get interested in grapplers, but truly it was THIS Vice that sealed my love for the archetype. She was also probably the reason why I never got into 13 since the changes they did to her just didn't click
Sumo wrestlers in fighting games are a joy to see! You can really FEEL the power of Taka Arashi as you try to hit him. But I liked hearing about Hinako from KoF. Looking forward to seeing how she'll play in KOF15! ^^
Taka is the equivalent of Smash Bros.' Establishments of Super Heavyweight Characters; The heavier they are the stronger their hits and the harder they are to launch. Smash Bros. Brawl in particular specified Mario having a struggle while hurling Bowser like he did in Super Mario 64.
I've only played 2 & 4 vanilla, so this was my first time seeing T.Arashi in action and *good lord* , this lad is an ABOSLUTE UNIT in 3D fighters. Apparently he was temporarily dropped from the roster from 4 and initial versions of 5 since they can't get him to work properly (which lore-wise is explained away as getting thrashed so hard by everyone else he lost his drive to fight for a while). Also worth mentioning: his VA was Kiyoyuki Yanada (RIP), who voiced Jotaro in JoJo's Venture (10+ years before the 2013 anime!).
Great video, such a fun archetype. Let’s go Taka, VF really is so amazing and crazy deep. I’m so stoked for Hinako too. Her and Ramon have been staples on my team since 2000. Any thoughts on exploring Lucha characters?
@@Rooflemonger that would be awesome let’s go Lucha Libre! Appreciate all the great content. All that VF talk makes me want to go back and rewatch your beginners guide lol
This is great information, loved the heart you put into this one. Very fun to learn some VF, Sumo stuff, and basic fighting game tactics all in one go. Thank you!
Super awesome video, Rooflemonger. Sumo representation in fighting games is always fun and speaking of sumo, you are in for a treat. The Tekken World Tour Finals is on January 13-14, 2024 and for the first time in Tekken World Tour history, a Ganryu player, placed 16th in the Tekekn World Tour leaderboard, qualified for the Tekken World Tour Finals. The Ganryu player is Tibetano from Spain and not only he qualified for the Tekken World Tour Finals, he also won the Tekken 7 tournament at First Attack 2023 (TWT Challenger event), with Ganryu. Keep up the awesome content 😎👍🏼
Thanks for shedding light on Taka. Lol he plays such a different game everyone has to study him to know what works against him. There are certain launchers that doesn't knock him down but knocks everyone else down. He can't crouch dash fuzzy at -5. Every character has a punish that specifically works only against Taka. You can dribble him with attack when he gets knocked down that you cant hit on anyone else. Taka is truely a unique beast.
Even though T7 Ganryu was never the best, I know a lot of people that get traumatic flashbacks whenever I mention his T5/T5DR iteration. That character was an absolute menace, and easily one of the most terrifying characters to ever bring the dosukoi to a video game.
This brings back memories! I remember when Dad and I used to play Tekken. He was Ganryu, and he had me trapped between the wall and his Kabuki Palm. Once I got hit, it was over! We both had a good laugh at that moment! XD
I have no complains of having different character variety & representation in fighting games and sumo is no exception. I actually genuinely like E. Honda and what he represents in sport, when thinking of fighters they often associated with strong type bodybuilders that often look rather fit but not sumo where characters like Taka Arashi & Ganryu are rotund & fat.
Cool that Taka has Henka, it's one of the most fascinating moves of Sumo that explains why Sumo has no weight classes. Hinako and Taka can be in an official fight and it's all fair. This is because Sumo is really a heavily technique based sport, the smallest person can ring out the biggest person with the right move, such as using Henka to let the opponent fly out of the ring themselves.
I just KNEW this video was gonna mostly be about the walking knowledge check that is Taka Arashi! But I appreciated the spotlight on Hinako. You know, every girl I've ever introduced to KOF has fallen in LOVE with Hinako. Just gonna throw that out there. Also, this clip of Jiyuna getting bodied by her ( ruclips.net/video/TsEIoiDm_Ws/видео.htmlsi=uDjkt0trZtOeby7o ).
honestly at this rate probably not, this video is the worst performing video in a long time. People vote with their clicks, interest is not there. Sucks but thems the breaks
Should be a busy week! Almost certainly an Omni Man trailer dropping at some point, and Paris Games Week is happening as well, of which Tekken 8 is also almost certainly gonna be dropping a trailer!
I always figured Sumo wrestlers should be somewhere between a grappler and a rushdown character. I was wrong, they should be Taka. Also Henka is controversial but not dishonorable. It's a vital tool for smaller wrestlers as there are no weight classes in Sumo. The Henka's only dishonorable when someone like Taka uses it against equals or smaller opponents.
ive seen the articles about Hakuho sho when he pulled a henka and some are basically veiled death threats lol, people do not like it. Here is an exact quote "Go now and you go in true Japanese fashion, falling on your sword for that Day 15 performance so unworthy of your name."
@@Rooflemonger I gotcha, and the anger over it is understandable, Hakuho normally wouldn't need a henka to win. He's an all time great so he's expected to put on a good match. A Henka at the start usually denies a good match, and can be dangerous as an opponent expects you to match their full force charge and instead charges out of the ring, off balance. It comes down to how and when it's used, and it can be all some guys have. Your comparison between the henka and zoning was spot on, though, too much of it makes the audience salty, lol.
Some indie fighting game sumos I'd recommend are Mono from Schwarzerblitz who's a ninja sumo cat girl fashionista who is a fast sumo Goliath from Battle Craze who's a mutant beetle who uses electricity and sumo to fight
Different animations for throws against Taka? I wanted something like that for Abigail in SFV! I always thought it would've been cool to see characters have a completely different throw or technique to take down the big bodys (not necessarily a struggle to throw him like VF's Taka, though that is pretty friggin' rad). Imagine a smaller character like Cammy or Ibuki climbing up Abigail's massive frame & twisting his head or something for leverage to bring him down instead of him kneeling or whatever he did to fit the regular throws in the game.
Fun fact! Samurai Shodown has Earthquake, who is said to be impossible to throw in the character lineup (in an original arcade cabinet) Well ... They didn't manage to code that, so you can throw him like anyone else... IN THE FIRST GAME. They did code it in the sequel... And then he stopped appearing until the special entries.
