Been playing an absurd amount of usf4 with my bf lately, and god damn have I learned what a mechanically interesting grappler Hakan is, his great movement and screen control in neutral when oiled makes him feel so much different than every grappler. I also love that you can move while you do his focus
Loved Hakan. A super fast reason Ultra2 when your opponent still has a bunch of travel time was the best feeling. It was also super hype that one time Infiltration busted him out at EVO... Man I missed street fighter. So glad the SFV nightmare is over.
Hakan is 1 of the most interesting inovated characters that I like in SF and 1 of the top 5 characters that I want to see comeback in Street Fighter 6. Alongside with Adon,Menat,Seth & Elena.
I was really hoping that you would mention that when Hakan is oiled up he can slide forward and backward while holding focus attack. He’s the only character that can move while having focus charge
Some stuff he missed. His focus. While his focus is charging, you can actually hold forward or backward, and he will slide in that direction. You can actually see right here at 6:21 in the video where he does it for just a second, but he didn't hold it, so he only slid a tiny bit. He went over this briefly but didn't really explain just how good him being able to cancel his dash attacks are. You can FADC after the focus attack lands. So instead of focusing through the projectile and dashing, just use his slide to slide forward let the focus attack land, and use the hit stun from the attack to decide whether to go for lights to get some plus frames or cancel to your medium buttons for a big combo. Not only that, he essentially can use his FADC to combo any button into another because he recovers so quickly (I.e. You can combo 3 fwd+mp into each other. That's normally a combo ending button.) His Ultra 2. Keep this one brief, but when he said anything that makes you airborne, he meant ANYTHING. Any move in the entire game that removes your characters two feet from the ground at the same time will get caught by his Ultra 2. Playing Juri, and you decided to press Roundhouse? Ultra 2. Wake up DP? Ultra 2. Wanna Sumo Smash, Sumo Headbutt, or use your Ultra 1 in neutral? Ultra 2. Wanna play El Fuerte? Get this Ultra 2 son! His Super. His super has 3 different properties based on whether you press LK, MK, or HK when doing it. LK: Hit Invulnerability MK: Throw Invulnerability HK: Projectile Invulnerability This also includes Ultras. Imagine Fei Long does his Rekkashingeki or Chun-Li does her Hosenka. Do his Super with LK and all of their punches and kicks do absolutely nothing as they inevitably fall into your oily grasp taking 450 damage. One of the best Supers in the game. Last one, his Oil Dive. This move is devious. He mentioned that the move will only hit on standing or airborne opponents, so if you're crouching, always whiffs right? So, in SF4, when you wake up after being knocked down, there are a few (Maybe one? I can't remember.) frames where the crouch input isn't yet "recognized," and your character is considered to be standing...You can see where I'm going with this. If you oil dive at the correct time on your opponent's wake up, you essentially get a guaranteed unblockable grab and their only option to get out of it is to do an invincible reversal. So Hakan can essentially spam this on your wake up over and over, baiting you to do a reversal, and once you fall for it, just hit you with a juicy combo. Go ahead, try it.
i haven't watched this yet but hakan was my first REAL street fighter main. everything about him was so goofy and fun and it really finally made fighting games click for me. it's been a long time since i've seen my friend hakan and i've moved on to other games but my memories of finally GETTING why people play fighting games will never die
Love! I started using Hakan in his initial release, yes my main character...and I just kept getting better and better as he evolved. The most unique, viable and intersting additions to SF. MUST see him come back in 6
My favourite cheesy move with Hakan (mained him for many, many years) was to do the short slide attack while oiled up, which put opponents in a guarding position, but you would never hit them due to the short range of the slide, and then pull out a 360 grab or U1 during recovery of the slide. Really mean one.
Back when I was a teenager playing vanilla SFIV and had little money for gaming, Hakan was the main reason I wanted to upgrade to Super. I'm a weirdo and feel drawn to the oddball characters of Street Fighter, so seeing all the creativity that went into Hakan just made me really excited. Sadly in Street Fighter we never know when a character will be back, but if Hakan ever does return I will welcome him with open arms.
My favorite fighting game character ever! Nothing better than sliding around with focus attacks catching people off guard. As well as zooming full screen to grab people throwing fireballs with EX Slide. I was a midtier player in SF4 but it was my fighting game peak. I was in the top 150 Hakans on Xbox 360. I hope maybe one day he will come back but I doubt it. Thanks for spreading the oily love.
Played him quite a lot, particularly later on after they buffed him to start the match oiled. Really fun toolset and also deceptively powerful. If USFIV would have lived on longer I have no doubt he would have ended up in the same tier bracket as Evil Ryu and Elena.
Great stuff again! I think one thing you showed but didn't mention is how oiled-up Hakan can slightly slide while doing focus. It's kinda weird looking but it can actually get you in or out of range sometimes.
Great and informative video about Hakan, someone I knew nothing about until now. I definitely could see him being in SF6 as a DLC character eventually especially since he has to meet his old friend E. Honda again.🙂 Also, I'm down for more videos on fighting game characters that not a lot of people play or really know the backstory of.
Man, his trailer was one of the most hype ones I've ever seen in terms of Street Fighter, up there with G's. He was the talk of the town, and for a good reason, so if I ever have to play SFIV, you can bet I'm picking him up. I LOVE MY DAUGHTERS THEY ARE SOOO PRETTYYYYY
Hakan was one of the reasons I got into fighting games. Saw the clip of Infiltration rocking him in tournament and wanted to try it out. I never got into SF4 and eventually got into Tekken with the help from my greater inspiration Yoshimitsu, but to this day I’ve felt if Hakan makes a comeback I’m picking up SF 100 %
As a Turkish kid in grade school when this game came out, we were never quite sure Hakan was Turkish, since he didn't even look human to begin with, and I could see Hakan being a common name in other regions of the world. Looking back at it, the red skin makes sense, albeit a bit extreme, because Turkish Oil Wrestling is a summer sport held under the blazing sun, but there is nothing redeeming the blue hair with craters. I still find him to be a great character and take pride that he made it to IV, the attire is faithful, he's got a unique and appropriate body type, an okay idle pose, all in all unique silhouette, they also found a really fun and inventive way to put a spin on "oil" wrestling, and it ties into his gameplay very well, which is really solid in and of itself. He's a family man, a gentle giant, a humble tradesman, which is in line with positive Turkish and Eastern European stereotypes in general. In Turkey, being a father to a daughter is a very special thing and it is believed to be one of the strongest bonds in life. The one bit I don't get is the way they tie the wrestling oil to olive oil, which is fine for branding, but he speaks so vaguely of it that whenever he says he's the "oil king of the world" or etc, it comes off as a tie in ALSO to petroleum and the concept of middle eastern "oil princes", with which Turkey has very little ties. He's way too obsessed with oil, and he sounds so dumb putting oil and grease adjectives to everything. Oil wrestling is also obviously not a practical martial art, it is a sport with rules that apply to both fighters, that create otherwise unrealistic conditions. I get that he's prideful about it which is very Turkish but his relationship with Honda is built on a dumb premise which is that it is a superior technique, although i guess his rendition of oil wrestling is fundamentally different and perhaps more applicable.
Hakan's friggin' nuts, and I love him for that! I main him in Ultra 4 along with Elena, Sakura and Gouken. I guess I noticed a pattern with how I used the obscure characters in the SF titles, like with G/Q, Necro and of course Hakan :P
When I was getting into fighting games (around after Ultra SF4 came out) Hakan was one of the few non-classic characters that really caught my eye. Say what you will about his importance in the lore, but I just really liked his personality and voice. I didn't even realize some consider him a joke character. Hakan is just fun.
I was a Hakan main back in SF4. I learned some secret tech with him and climbed the ranks of online ranked quickly of him. I was accused of being a cheater or hacker but I was simply devoted to the oil king. What's the secret tech you ask? With Hakan if you scored a knock down you could nail oil dive on the opponents wake up as long as they didn't have an invincible reversal like shoryuken that had invincibility active frame one. Every character had 3 frames of standing animation even if you held down when your character stood up. If you timed it right, Hakan could grab the opponent via oil dive on their 3 standing frames. If you got his spd and right after nailed an oil dive you almost did about 450 damage. Not many characters could survive that passed twice with an average of 1000 health...

i don’t play 2d fighters, i adore them, i just don’t find them fun to actually play, but when i did play Street Fighter 4 long ago on my 3DS i messed with Hakan and had a blast. On the 3DS version you could map up to 4 specials onto buttons on the touch screen, and Hakan had a oiled slide that would send him flying across the floor. Figured out with good timing I could slide during the opponent’s wakeup to catch them and loop it again and again. Went online and spammed that move against an El Fuerte for an entire set. 11 year old me was doing meaties before i even knew what it was, truly a prodigy lol
Can you believe there was a time where at round start, despite his intro showing him dunking oil all over his body, Hakan would not in fact be oiled up at the start of each round?
One of my favorite fighting game characters and the most chad of them all. It's not even up for debate. Anybody who doesn't acknowledge Hakan's supreme chad energy is objectively wrong.
I loved playing Street fighter 4 years ago. Everyone would always say he is one of the worst characters in the game when not oiled up and he’s the best character in the game when oiled up.

That's normally a combo ending button.)
His Ultra 2.
LK: Hit Invulnerability
MK: Throw Invulnerability
HK: Projectile Invulnerability
This also includes Ultras.
Hakan got me into Street fighter and fighting games back in 2009. He’s just so funky looking and fun to play. He made me the grapple man I am today.
i haven't watched this yet but hakan was my first REAL street fighter main. everything about him was so goofy and fun and it really finally made fighting games click for me. it's been a long time since i've seen my friend hakan and i've moved on to other games but my memories of finally GETTING why people play fighting games will never die
That oil buff was a godsend. Also the fact that his forward Roundhouse knocked down whether Hakan is oiled up or not.
what? you could give him another 10 years and he wouldn't be anywhere near their tier.
@@Yoloslides With yolo slides he certainly wouldn't, true.
I didn't really play a lot of SF4, but man there really is no other character like him. It'd be cool if he came back
Street Fighter 4 for the 3ds is where I had my Neuron activation that I liked fighting games, and Hakan was my favorite. I hope he comes back for 6
Hakan is the Best, He should be playable in Street Fighter 6 :D
Great stuff again! I think one thing you showed but didn't mention is how oiled-up Hakan can slightly slide while doing focus. It's kinda weird looking but it can actually get you in or out of range sometimes.
I used to love messing around with Hakan during the sf4 era. Super ridiculous but super fun!
I loved playing as him in sf4.
Hakan has some of my favorite Ultras in SF. I always loved how mad friends would get at landing Ultra 2 on them. GREASY!
I fucking LOVED Hakan man! He's the reason I started playing grapplers at all
That first reveal trailer for him back in the day was a trip.
Man, his trailer was one of the most hype ones I've ever seen in terms of Street Fighter, up there with G's. He was the talk of the town, and for a good reason, so if I ever have to play SFIV, you can bet I'm picking him up.
I LOVE MY DAUGHTERS
THEY ARE SOOO PRETTYYYYY
Keep up this series bro 💯 awesome
Hakan is still my all time favorite SF character. I used to only play him ranked
really nice analysis. there are a lot of chars that are inventive and because they are low tier they are lost to oblivion, when it should be otherwise
"Grease me up woman!"
He's on a billboard in SF6 so I hope he comes back
Hakan was my favorite character from Street Fighter 4, I hope he come back in 6.
Hakan's friggin' nuts, and I love him for that! I main him in Ultra 4 along with Elena, Sakura and Gouken. I guess I noticed a pattern with how I used the obscure characters in the SF titles, like with G/Q, Necro and of course Hakan :P
Choose poison as the target for the oil themed moves... I approve
I used to think he was a weird character but watching this, he's actually pretty cool
Great vid! I was just talking about hakan and fuerte, and how’d these grapplers would shine in this game
SF4 is the gift that keeps on giving
my boy said yagley gurris to yagli güres istg
nvm anyways im super happy that theres turkish rep in street fighter and i look forward to more :) nice content
i don’t play 2d fighters, i adore them, i just don’t find them fun to actually play, but when i did play Street Fighter 4 long ago on my 3DS i messed with Hakan and had a blast.
Me watching him grab poison, and my dirty mind be like: *okay poison get some girl!*
Most underrated character ever.
Now that you bring it up, it does seem like SF6 was very inspired by Hakan's gameplay in SF4.
precisely how i felt from the beginning
I used to main Hakan in sf4! All the dash cancelling almost broke my fight stick! Loved the tricky setups that only Hakan specialists know 😉
Bro I absolutely loved Hakan. If they brought him back for SF6 I would definitely buy it.
Can you believe there was a time where at round start, despite his intro showing him dunking oil all over his body, Hakan would not in fact be oiled up at the start of each round?
Hakan only finally really came together at minimum in AE 2012 update, before then he was a dumpster fire of a design lol
I can't wait to watch this with sound when I get off work.
This was my first street fighter game and I loved this character. Not a lot of fun unique grappler options, so ya gotta love to see it.
One of my favorite fighting game characters and the most chad of them all. It's not even up for debate. Anybody who doesn't acknowledge Hakan's supreme chad energy is objectively wrong.
As an SF4 Hakan and E. Honda main, I agree with the message of this video :)
hakan was my first grappler that i randomly loved but didn’t know how to play
I loved playing Street fighter 4 years ago. Everyone would always say he is one of the worst characters in the game when not oiled up and he’s the best character in the game when oiled up.
Hakan is my favorite grappler in street fighter. Yes, more than Zangief.
He’s absolutely bizarre in design and playstyle but that’s what makes him so fun. I know the SF4 newcomers are effectively just “Juri and those other losers” to many people and seemingly capcom as well looking at SF6’s roster leaks, but I’d give so much to have Hakan return.
Finally some Hakan love that isn't just the Infiltration EVO comeback moment lol, this must be how Third Strike players feel when someone praises the game for something that isn't moment 37
Hakan made sure that his kids had that wacky ass hair 😭 bro went to work on his wife I can’t imagine the amount of oil in that room😭
If they won't have Hakan be playable in 6, then at least we could play as one of his kids. It keeps the theme off "New Generation".
I always think of James Chen saying "Hakan is one of the strongest, if not THE strongest characters when oiled up!"
To be fair we need to see the other characters strengths when they are oiled up for comparison
i'm still hearing it to this day, and he was wrong then and it's still wrong now lmao. But Hakan is fun af
