  • Dan begins to focus on target animals and starts moving in. Bow hunting public land means finding the property where a shooter buck exists and hunting him down.

I appreciate the videos like this one. Showing even your bad hunts when you don’t see a single deer. So much more realistic to real life hunting, instead of sitting in a box blind on a food plot.

Just realized yesterday that the difference (besides the whole scent thing) between Dan and John E. is that Dan hunts specific bucks - target bucks where John will hunt good areas. Their choices for areas are almost identical, but John hopes a big buck will come out and Dan usually knows where his is located or bedding and waits to see if it follows its normal path or proactively goes in and gets it. Personally, I try to learn from both men. Having said that, I am only successful at hunting due to Dan and his great videos, DVDs, and the info from people he has also influenced. Changed my entire strategy. Scout, Scout, Hunt!

Yup it's a puzzle I don't use trail cameras I look at the sign and can judge the size and round about age from that. I then come in every couple weeks or so and see what fresh patterns are there and develop a plan. Typically I hunt the backside of bedding in the morning during the pre rut and lock down phases and switch to a transition area between food and bed in the evening and early season I typically hunt the evening only. Just my way of things and I don't go out unless the conditions are right burning always always scout on a rainy day no matter what. Especially when I have a spot on mind that I havent seen on foot yet. I try and different approaches as well like wading the river bottoms to get to some spots

Dan have you ever seen any deer or shot any during crazy weather like that? I know right before and right after can be excellent. Also, do you have knowledge of anyone that hunts similar to the way you do, targets specific animals the whole deal but does it hunting from the ground? I’d be interested to see that.

I watched a spike attempt to mount a doe the other day (the 9th of oct) in the crp field I frequent for coffee and sunrise.. thought it was strange. I bring this up because of the buck chasing a doe in the video. Is it just because he is young? Or do mature deer also try to breed early if they get close to a doe? Can’t wait for the beast to slay a beast ! but I do enjoy the hunt! Always love the journey but when the destination is a mature buck in the freezer, can’t help wanting to get there. ✌🏻 from Maine.

Got a question for you actually advice, we just had a doe hunt in September it went 10 days I wish we didn’t have, but also had a youth gun season this wee. My question is I had ppl show on my camera where I had 5 shooters on it, they disappeared off my camera, would you think the pressure had stacked them in the bedding marshes, I’ve not hunted the area yet to let the area cool down, should I wait till pre rut to start on the area?
