Poets of the fall is a rock band from Finland that was formed in 2003.
Their first single was the song Late Goodbye for the game Max Payne 2
This song is from their 2nd studio album called Carnival of Rust and the music video was chosen as the best ever Finnish music video back in 2006 when the song was released.
If you wan't to hear more from them I recommend listening to a couple of songs which are all different from another and really showcase how they have many different styles.
Sleep - is a "lullaby rock" (you'll understand what i mean when you hear it) type of song with a very soothing but also melancholy kind of sound and the amount of people who have told that the song helped them to fall asleep when they were depressed or otherwise in a bad place tells what a masterpiece it is. (i recommend you check the live consert version that is on their official channel. you can enable the lyrics on the video so the crowd won't stop you from processing them. the live version showcase how Marko's voice is the real deal and that there is no "studio magic" bullshit in his singing and many even consider his live performances to be even better than the studio versions on the albums.)
Daze - is more of a pop oriented rock song with some amazing vocals by Marko in the chorus.
Lift - is also one of their more well known songs and has more of a traditional mid 2000s rock sound to it
Poet and the Muse - is a song from the game Alan Wake. it is a tragic love song of pure story telling and an integral part of the game's story but can be enjoyed on it's own. for example it is one of my mothers favorite songs and she has never played Alan Wake or pretty much any video games for that matter.
Children of the Elder God - is a borderline heavy metal song and also from the game Alan Wake and is credit for the band in the game called Old Gods of Asgard. It tells about the dark presence that lives in the bottom of the lake that has the powers to manipulate reality and is the main antagonist of the game. it is also mentioned in the Poet and the Muse
the order you react doesn't matter except that you may want to listen to the two Alan Wake song back to back so you can spot the links between the songs. although my personal recommendation is to do sleep next just because it's such a beautiful song
also all of their music videos and most of the official live videos have the lyrics if you put the youtube subtitles on if you really want to concentrate and dissect the meaning of the lyrics because most of their songs have some really deep meaningful lyrics
I really hope you keep checking out more from then since they are my mothers favorite band of all time, one of my personal favorites and in general one of the best Finnish bands to ever grace the music industry
although i'm already super grateful that you at least listened to this one since i requested it
    keep up the great work!

Here's my take on the video and what it means.
The circus itself is very sinister and seems almost predatory with the imagery and how the performers are presented, and the fortune teller is not any better.
His song isn't a ballad of sincerely loving and wanting to be with a woman he cares about, it is him demanding that this woman has to love him because he's decided she is his savior who will pull him from his miserable and decrepit position.
It's even shown in the Tarot reading he does, the Star portraying her as a savior or beacon of hope and healing and the Nine of Swords representing his misery and despair he insists she is meant to save him from.
"I need you. Without you I have nothing, so I am demanding that you love me so that I can be be fixed and escape this place."
The opening lyrics make this pretty clear, since once the prose is deciphered it's basically him saying "You definitely share my obsessive and greedy idea of love and don't fault me for pushing this desperate fixation on you, don't you?"
The creepy carnival barker at the game the woman is drawn to who is clearly just eager to get money from her is played by the singer as well, seemingly symbolizing how self-interested and dysfunctional his idea of love and desire to have somebody take him away from his problems actually is.
The woman being in a gas mask to me also has some symbolism, showing the circus as a literally toxic environment and hinting at how the fortune teller doesn't even see her face as an individual beyond the love and obsession he is projecting onto her even as she backs up in seeming fright once the chorus kicks in with his direct demand and her attention gets drawn elsewhere while he gets more desperate.

I just got really into analyzing this video because of all the abstract and macabre imagery.
It's like something out of a weird dream, but there's definite symbolism behind it all. At least, that's how I see it.
The Tarot reading and what it conveyed was even accurate to the actual meanings of the arcana and numbered suits used.
The video's cinematography really completes the song by providing a feeling of menace and confusion with the dark and creepy visuals that's just unsettling enough to convey the more sinister or at least off-putting tone of the fortune teller's serenade.

      Yeah.
It's a pretty trippy video just at face value.
It took me some time to really think about it and fit the pieces together and realize what some of the details and lyrics could mean, and I got excited to share my thoughts and interpretations about the song and video here.

@@ABtheKreator well this is arguably their best and most symbolic and hard to understand video hence being chosen as the best Finnish music video ever. But hey at least i threw you in the deep end with the first request so the songs after this shouldn't be such a headache for you 😅 i recommend you do the live consert video of Sleep next so you get something slow and truly beautiful to relax to ❤

The best thing is, this band is SO MUCH better live. Like, one of those gems like Nightwish that are always better live compared to the recording. Seen them like 3 times in the Netherlands, I so wish our lockdown would end soon, but hey, let's all stay strong together until we can make new great memories again :3

    • @Sparkle648
      @Sparkle648 2 года назад

yep! although it isn't as cut and dry as being better but more about what your looking for. example the song sleep. it is much softer and tranquil in the album version and since the songs purpose is literally to help you go to sleep the album version does this better but if i just want to listen to the song i like to listen to the live version since the emotions are much stronger in the live version.
tldr. it depends on the circumstance in which you are listening whether the live or album version is better but both are always top notch. it's amazing how out of their 91 songs on their albums there is literally 0 songs i would ever skip when listening to the albums

Plot hole? What plot hole. She isn’t supposed to lick it, this song is about the materialistic choices people make thinking they will make them happy when you actually cannot buy happiness, but love is the only thing that will make you happy. You’ve missed the plot entirely.
