    When I had one of these keyboards, I liked it a lot but hated the way all kinds of crud would fall between the keys and then be visible thanks to the clear sides. My solution was to buy a second keyboard, and then run the first one through the dishwasher (no disassembly beforehand). I used the second keyboard, giving the first one a few weeks to dry out. After that I just alternated between the two -- running one through the dishwasher whenever it got annoyingly dirty and using the other one while the washed one was left to dry.
    I imagine this (mis)treatment shortened the life of the keyboards, but neither one of them failed over the years that I did this. It was a satisfactory solution for me.

    6 years later and this is still helping people. Thanks!
    I got a G4 today second hand and the keyboard was super dirty. I needed to take the keys off, but wasn't sure if I would need a special tool to take them off without breaking them. Thanks to your video, I was able to find out I just needed a screwdriver and they would pop right off.

      keyboard keycap pullers, both ring pull, and wire pullers are not that expensive on eBay, or Aliexpress, and both are worth keeping around to clean keyboards(I find one type works better than the other depending on the keyboard I'm cleaning), and not risk damaging keys with a screwdriver, or other flat end tool.

    I loved these old keyboards. It certainly took me a while to adapt to the new laptop style keyboards Apple includes with their iMac computers, even though I already owned a MacBook but I eventually did, however, I still think the old style was a much nicer design. Great job on the restoration and the video!

    I absolutely LOVE fixing up old keyboards and watching restoration videos of old keyboards. They're such an aesthetic part of the computer but also essential, and they're so easy to take apart and fix/clean. The mechanics are usually very simple but it's also neat to see some companies make keyboards super complicated. Doesn't matter if it's a crappy Dynex or a Razer Huntsman Elite, I freakin love em.

    Been using this keyboard exclusively with my desktops for nearly 20 years now, and am currently on my second one (purchased about a decade ago). Still works great but it's quite dirty and my wife gives me hell all the time for it. haha I now feel motivated to give it a good cleaning after watching this vid. 🙂

    I have several of these (and Apple keyboards in general), and have gone through the keyboard-cleaning process *many* times. It's painstaking, having to swab each key inside out. That being said, it feels so nice to have a spotless keyboard. What's interesting is that it sometimes changes the typing feel altogether, but that usually reverses itself once the keyboard becomes grimy again.
    -Typed on a wireless version of this keyboard. Although the keys are stiffer on these models, I still find them to be one of the best Apple membrane keyboards, next to the black, Apple Pro one.

  • @harrytsang1501
    @harrytsang1501 8 лет назад

    This video helps a lot. I got 6 of this model below $8 USD. They are not yellowed as much so I skipped the peroxide part. 3 of them are 100% functional, the rest has some key not activating. It was caused by the broken membrane connection and can be fixed by some copper wire and tapes. It still takes a lot of time to clean every single dirty key.

  • @richfiles
    @richfiles 9 лет назад

    I prefer this keyboard with the clear plastic piece completely removed. Thin rubber pads, and two tall rubber feet, stuck to the right spots on the bottom in the raised area makes it secure and stable enough for regular use, and and it looks SOOO nice with that free-floating open look afterwards. Sadly, my membrane is now shot... Dang carbonated beverages... I am making the switch to mechanical key switches now, but I will always have fond memories of this old keyboard.

  • @frankhernandez133

    Still using this model, I am very grateful that you need all of the products used throughout each process for restoration. What brought me to this video, as well as a few others, is trying to quiet the keyboard strokes while typing. Understanding how more recent keyboards, wireless or not, have thinner keys. So reason for less sound made while typing seems obvious. Yet, I am curious about restoration of this this model helping to more silence each keystroke. Please notify me & others about your input on this subject. Many Apple users definitely miss the extra USB found within this model keyboard. Thanks again for taking up such work during such a process to achieve what you have for others to follow!

    This has been a great watch. I just switched to Mac OS X after years of Linux use for my work, and I got the aluminum chiclet keyboard, which is nice to a point. I wanted an A1048 and picked one up off eBay, these tips will help me clean the keyboard up greatly, I spent the extra to get one in good condition so I think the translucent bottom, the keys and the white plastic board underneath is all I'll need to do - but this has been great help!

This keyboard is so much better than that basic crap membrane keyboards that come with so many PC's these days, and the cheaply made K120 Logitech tries to pass off for nealy $22, and feels like typing on spongy dead flesh(yes I have one in nearly new condition from a church sale I paid $1 for when I test old computers, and it's barely worth that).

    I usta take my A1048 apart to clean it, but after that became old (I live in a very, very dusty room), I simply take a tiny Allen wrench, remove the back, then put the keyboard in the shower. I squirt some eco-friendly cleaner (I use “Better Life”) in between all the keys, and with the shower head set to “strip paint” (you know, the water blasts so hard, it hurts), I blow the dirt out. Yes, I completely soak it, and use a scrubby sponge to clean the keys.
    When it sparkles (looks new), I shake it, then turn it keys-down and spank the keys. Then I set the oven to “Keep Warm” (150°F) and put the keyboard in the oven for an hour. Then, even though it looks dry, I put it keys-down on top of my Mac for three days, just to be on the safe side because electricity scares me, and running electricity through a potentially-damp keyboard isn’t a good idea.
    It still looks as if I just bought it (once I get it clean, I mean; by the time I put it in the shower, there are clots of hair, giant dust bunnies, sticky bits of Pepsi, and so on all over it and it looks unrecoverable).
    Consider doing it my way, which is much, much quicker (save for the drying; you might be more brave than I am) You could also 1. Set the oven temp higher; 2. Leave it in the oven longer; 3. Find a warmer place than the top of your Mac (big-screen TV, a radiator, etc).

    That was my favorite Apple keyboard style. I wish they still made them like that.

    If you put some grease on the sliders, like Krytox 205 grade 0 or 00, they sound phenomenal. I would also suggest using Permatex Dielectric Grease or SuperLube 21030 on the wire stabilizers wherever they touch plastic. They will operate much smoother and sound quieter. If I recall correctly the stabilizers came greased from the factory, but it's long since dried up.

    I once disassembled an eMac keyboard.
    I got right about to the point I was right under the keys and then there were some screws that were kind of hard to get out. Takes a long time to get those last I guess 14 screws when you hit the bottom of the keyboard.

    You can use denatured alcohol on the key caps; It generally cleans the goo off plastic/rubber better than soap and water.

    I just found one of these for six bucks at the thrift store, not nearly in as bad shape, but I'm excited to be able to clean it with confidence now!

      If you can't find a .05 hex key you can use a t5 torx driver to take the first screws off as well

    My old school used these. The keys were nice and white. But underneath them was an absolute nightmare. Worse than the other Apple keyboard you did with all that dirt hair and dust.

    Okay so I've gone through and watched a lot of your restoration videos! They all rock! You're so meticulous on these things. One recommendation though is maybe to not use paper towels as the wood fibers can scratch surfaces.

    Hey David,
    I PM'd you about some music I wanted to submit to you. I'm not sure if you still accept music suggestions, but I found a great track that could work for your videos, and have listed a link in the private message. The track was made by a guy I know, and is free to use, as long as you put the artist's name, and the record company name, in the credits.

    Very good guide. It was their last really good keyboard. Luckily, the one from my old G4 Mac mini mostly just needs the dirt cleaning out of it.

    Fantastic job mate. Something satisfying in these videos restoring old things! I bought the same keyboard but I cannot find anywhere the hex key to open it? Any idea? Also what else I can clean the keys that is easy accessible? Like cooking soda or something?

    Be glad you did not completely disassemble the keyboard, as it is a nightmare to reassemble. There are separate membranes underr each key
