Hello from America, this video has perfect timing, I need the distraction🩷 I’ve been greatly enjoying this series. Y’all are so amazing, and I can’t believe how mentally strong y’all are to keep working on this even through all the bad weather. Y’all are awesome!
I can't imagine how chilly it is working in the cold and rain, so proud of you two for trooping through! Soon your home will be roofed, walled, insulated, and *gasp* heated!!
First rule of construction: EVERYTHING always takes longer then you expected. Most of the original plants are still there. Just be patient this year and see what comes back.
Thank you Jenn and Nick for another fun video on your house building journey. Will you take us on a field trip to the water's edge we all have been admiring? Speaking for your audience, we would love that.
Fun fact, with that plywood...the layer under the top one has the grain running the short way. It's why plywood is strong and stable when used as sheathing. Not trying to be a a$$, just thought I'd drop a bit of "the more you know" knowledge 😉
So great to see that you almost have that entire roof on. You'll be so happy to finally be able to work in dry conditions. Also, we use the same Watson gloves here at our Highland cattle ranch. We've been using Watson gloves ever since we met Brenda Watson in Switzerland when we used to live there. Such a great Vancouver business.
To say this episode was needed is an understatement. It's good, wholesome content provided by amazing people in a time where there's been so much turmoil. Thank you, Jenna and Nicki, for this friendly hug, and keep going! You've got this ❤❤
I'm loving your series so much. I live on Vancouver Island so it's interesting to see the weather systems that are hitting both of us. SO much wind and rain! I hope you can get this roof done soon!
You are both amazing people, I’ve worked on building projects with my husband for 54 years, it isn’t always easy ! I admire your work ethics, best wishes 🧡
My thoughts too! Really, recently as in the past 24 hrs and I only live one mile from Canada now! It’s amazing how such a short distance can become a dream overnight! 💙
It's getting cold, so the changes of straining yourself increases. A bit of stretching before manual labour is a good idea. But cold hands suck, and back injuries because of bad grip because of that cold. Get that roof done so you can work inside.
In your garden it looks like you've got some very healthy plants. Find out what those are and plant more. Because they're obviously happy and if they survived the blackberry jungle, then they're darned fine plants.
I thought the whole point of plywood is each ply has a different grain direction for strength, I guess the top and bottom layers make more of a difference though
Not only in the US, I am in Europe and I can't believe how stupid over 50% of the US electorate is. I can't wait for the content online with Trump voters whining about how bad life is, just like the Brexit voters that blame Europe for their own chosen misery.
i hate to correct, but the layers of plywood alternate in grain direction, it doesn't matter what way round you put it cos the one underneath is going the opposite way. the bendy plywood you can by is made by having all the layers in the same direction.
Omg i have router envy. You guys have done so well! Roof almost done!!!!!! Edit: Also, Jenna - The chimney looks worse now because you no longer have the old roof distracting you from it. It'll be grand!

I sure hope you guys worked yesterday Nov 5, it was a absolute gem of a day in Vancouver - you could have put in a solid 10 hrs with the weather we had - even today is looking decent
I totally forgot to comment last week on the Stanley tape measure. We have two and yet we don't build anything, lol. Jenna, I'd totally be with you on getting fired from a roofing job. Of course, I know me so I'd never apply for that anyway. I barely like doing yard work. i definitely wouldn't be outside in all kinds of conditions working on a roof. Great job!!!
It took me way too long to figure out what band of tape measure I have, because I got it like 20 years ago and it was a hand me down so it's been through some stuff but is still taking a beating it's a 1980's Stanley with the full metal casing. They don't make them like that anymore.

The plywood grain tip, sorry - incorrect. Plywood is named due to it's plies, that are layered in opposing perpendicular layers resulting in the strength is relatively the same in either direction it is used.
Your flat roof got me thinking of how easy it will be for you to put up Christmas lights, if you’re into that. You should get those permanent year-round Christmas lights that you can leave white or change the colors of.

I know you are working this hard in such wet weather to try and get your house watertight for winter, I hope you manage it in time before I gets much colder. Really enjoying all your videos
European here, so genuine question: building with wood in so much rain - once the roof is on: are you going to run dehumidifiers for a while or are you able to just carry on building? Like the plywood floors look really soggy, I assume there would be mold growing eventually. Or will you have to replace those because they warp? You are doing a fantastic job, the amount of pacience and teamwork you two have is admirable. I'm already looking forward to the next video, as always. :D
wow well done guys Nicks dad is brilliant as well i was nervous watching when you was all on the wet slippy VERY high roof you would never know it was your first build fantastic job guys really is 😍
7:57 Plywood is actually made with each layer's grain pattern alternating, so unlike natural wood, the grain orientation of the top layer isn't necessarily important for the strength of the board.
when you're hanging those fascia boards a 2x4 cleat screwed to the top edge will let you rest it on the ends of the trusses rather than having to hold it up while aligning/before screwing.
This may be a stupid question, but maybe you can answer it as a ‘fun fact’. I noticed that the plywood on the inside floors and on the roof has gotten black in many places from all the rain penetrating it. Is that black mold? Do you have to wait until the plywood completely dries out before putting the roofing shingles on so you don’t have mold issues inside the house, down the road?
Nicky! Isn't the whole point of plywood that every other layer the grain goes across so it's equally strong in all directions and it is more stable during humidity changes? ❤
Dang! That lumber is no light work. Seeing you guys drag that plywood and carry that 2x12. I feel like ya’ll have gotten a lot stronger from this project.
