This is fantastic! First ever 7/10??? I didnt even know when I started watching this. Thanks for leaving the commercials too. Really made for a great trip down memory lane.
Thanks for posting this show. I don’t recall seeing it back in the day. This was when bowling was still a popular and great sport. Here you had Holman throwing a rubber ball, nice slick lanes that didn’t appear to be blocked, nice commentary from Dave and Bo, good sportsmanship by all the contestants, Roth and Holman getting beat by classical stylists, strokers like Plessinger and Nelson, quiet and respectful audience, what more could anyone want? Nowadays strokers don’t stand a chance, everyone is on a giant ego trip, lanes are blocked so 20 mph, 500 rpm hacks can miss 3 boards right or left and still hit the pocket, it’s boring watching everyone hooking the ball 80 boards, and dummies in the broadcast booth, coaches and ball reps stroking the players’ egos, and ignorant screaming mobs in the audience. Bowling is still a great sport to participate in, but watching it on television these days sucks. Bowling has fallen a long way from its heyday, all you need to do is look at the scoring pace these days. In her prime, Lisa Wagner had like eight perfect games, and there is a guy in one of my leagues who is under forty and closing in on his fiftieth 300 game. Nothing against the guy, but there is no way this guy is as good as Lisa Wagner in her prime. Just saying that the equipment, lane conditions and scoring are totally out of control. Give me back my bowling, dude!
I agree with your sentiment. Modern telecasts have been turned into a circus and I no longer enjoy watching most of the male bowlers now.....most of them have no finesse.
@@pdef1949 I think a lot of people feel like that, but they just get dismissed as “Boomers “ and nobody in a position of authority in bowling cares what we think. I’d like to see legacy leagues with a short, flat shot and only rubber or plastic balls allowed. That would really separate the shotmakers from the hacks that need a six-board area on the lane to hit the pocket consistently.
@@lumberlikwidator8863 Before Mark Roth was incapacitated by a stroke, he and Marshall Holman established a plastic ball tournament. No reactive resins, urethane or hybrid balls were allowed, just polyester. It was interesting to watch the hotshot pros of the time have to adjust. It would have been even more interesting to see them bowl on wood lanes with real boards, not the synthetic surfaces of today. You were at a real disadvantage of you crossed 35 or 40 boards the way modern players do.
Great upload ! Thanks for this .... even the vintage commercials brought back great memories .... as well as the bowling commercials too ! Nelson Burton Jr. very candid about the players on the telecast .... and Marshall was being .... Marshall as usual. Gem of an upload !
Dave Diles seemed to bring out an extra level of candor in Bo when he was in the chair and wasn't afraid to poke fun at him. Other than Chris and Bo, Dave and Bo were probably my favorite tandem from this era.
1st thing I noticed about the telecast was bo's mentioning of iim stephanich's 300 game. Lane 30 in the previous match suffered a catastrophic failure. when Jim shot his 300 he did it on lanes 28 and 29. possibly the most difficult perfect game shot on TV ever because of the lane switch.
Does anyone know the artist and name of the instrumental music played at the start of the telecast? Used it hear it all the time but don't know who did it. I also didn't realize this was Roth's 7-10 split conversion game. I remember seeing Mazza's conversion a decade later.
I think so, because the Angle was made in... 1982? I'm not sure, but I know it came after the Classic. I occasionally use my dad's blue angle and it's got a really consistent roll and hook-- if I can fit my tiny fingers in his ball properly😂
Dave and Bo almost cursed Warren Nelson when they said he could only lose the title match by beating himself. Warren had a slightly high hit in the 8th frame, and he was lucky that he didn’t leave the 4-9 split.
Mark Roth's opponent showed no class after Roth converted the 7-10. He just sat there like a pissed off little kid. No wonder nobody remembers his name.
In late October 2022 at Sunset Lanes in Forks Wa,in league play an opponent made the 4-7-9-10 by going between the 9 and 10,the 9 hit the 7,then rolled into the 4,and it fell too.I went ape.Not in my life would I ever see such a pickup!
He was better known as a coach for the University of Nebraska bowling teams. His ladies won multiple NCAA championships over the years. He married one of his former huskers Kim Berke.

Always great to hear a video starting out with Jim McKay. He was one of the all-time greats.

RIP Mark Roth...the best of the best!
I was laying in the maternity ward under a heat lamp when this tourney was happening 🤣
Bumper music in and out of the segments; Bebu Silvetti - Spring Rain, and George Benson - Breezin’
Thank you ! I've been trying to find out the name of Breezin'. Love it !
I bowled against "Scorin' Warren" in juniors a few years earlier. Caught one night of qualifying for this tournament. Thanks for the memories!
I used to work there in the back fixing the machines. Not for the PBT. Not enough seniority. Watched it on TV.

I think Stefanich bowled the perfecto on 29 & 31.. Check that.. I think the last 2 matches that day were on 28-29..
As soon as Roth left that 7-10, I thought of him making it but didn't know if this was it!!

BA - Before the Angle?

Warren Nelson puts a tremendous amount of roll on the ball.
Where was Chris Schenkel here? Calling the Liberty Bowl?
14.29---another chapter in bowling history. Was 6 when this happened.
I'm pretty sure the Angle came out in 1980!
Bill looked like someone just ran over his dog after Mark made that 7-10...
Just no class at all on Straub's end
Alameda CA in the house!
I'd like to see today's bowlers on these conditions.
I'd say the wood surfaces of the past were more difficult whereas the oil patterns of today are more difficult.

14:31 7 10 Split
0:35 music is awesome.
George Benson-Breezin
Roth 7-10 14:02
What a almost impossible shot. Was wonderful to watch
Thank you for the awesome post!!
I happened to convert the 7-10 split on April 16, 1990. Ironically, I have never bowled a perfect 300 game.
long time ago bowling is so fun. All they need is one ball not like now adays, each player has 6 balls on the rack lol
Who do you think you are, I am 🎉 😅

Looser sport! No athleticism required
To go bowl a few games and get drunk not much athleticism. Bowl 40+ games of qualifying in a week you got to be in shape.
So your wife turned down sex tonight?
Losers can't spell loser correctly. Looking at you, dirty biker.
At least learn to spell 'loser'......loser
And how do you know this? Did you bowl a perfect game your first try? How athletic are you, sitting at home watching your football with your beer?
