Well. Mark, Johnny, & Joey grew up in Brooklyn. Johnny is 4 years older than Mark. Mark is 4 yrs. older than Joey. Mark bowled at Maples Lanes. John is the house professional at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick. Dave Davis, Teata Semiz were from New Jersey. Ferraro from Kingston, N.Y. They typically bowled on tough conditions which is why they are all so accurate. Johnny has been on staff with Brunswick for so many years and active with anything that calls for professionalism. 14 Standard PBA titles. Roth was with Columbia and accumulated 34 Standard PBA titles. Berardi bowled action in the Bronx and has 11 Standard PBA titles. Great to see Johnny Petraglia announcing. Extremely knowledgeable. One of the nicest guys. Such a professional. I would just love to see Johnny. He knows a friend of mine, Kenny Granelli, who grew up with Mark in Brooklyn. Happy bowling to everyone who loves our sport. VERY glad to see Berardi win. Especially in Buffalo.😀
Trivia question: The Lt-48 by Brunswick was unique in several ways, one being the exterior finish wasn't polished like all other bowling balls but had a matte texture. What media was used to achieve this unique feature?
Bowling is such a humbling sport! Mark Roth can win so many tournaments with very high scores, then turn around and shoot a 149, yet he's a good sport about it.
Joe Berardi bowled some solid games on a tough pair of lanes. What I noticed the most was the short approaches by Troup. Pappas and Berardi. Back in the day, I had to stand with one heel off the edge of the approach with a five-step delivery. On a side note, Mrs. Berardi was extremely good looking. Thanks for the video.
One of the centers not far from me, in Wellington, KS, changed ownership recently and went "retro" with these masking units. My personal favorite is the one that followed these, the tan 1980's Brunswick ones with different graphics in the middle. The center I used to bowl at back in the '90s had them and would rotate graphics every so often to match the seasons.
Jim Roberts play by play is yak yak yak yak yak yak. He must be a baseball radio play by play guy. He won’t leave even two seconds of dead air! Telling us about every spare and strike from the previous games and even all the scores and series in the qualifying rounds. Congrats to Petraglia for getting his commentary in at all, which was very good. BTW Berardi was the best bowler and the most consistent of the day.
The two handers are just Thumbless Crankers, but it has improved carry!!!! Ask Jason Belmonte? Mark Roth was the First SuperCranker, and many Bowlers Emulated Roth and The High backswing that Pete Weber made Famous was also emulated by many bowlers.
This was the good ol' days of ESPN, when it broadcast sports with sane announcers. What is ESPN today? Basically, a bunch of loudmouths like Stephen A-hole Smith who think that screaming at the top of their lungs makes what they say relevant.
Great first match. Gotta wonder if Tommy would have won if he didn't divert his 10th frame focus to 'what do I need, to win'. I've lost many times, the exact same way. lol
Bowled at Thruway Lanes as a youth. My Dad took me every Sat. One of the few memories of him as he died young. Also remember the Nin Angelo's streak on Beat The Champ. It's all gone now, tore down and replaced with a car dealership show room. Another piece of Bowling History gone.

Thanks for the excellent post. Listening to Johnny Petraglia makes me think about going down to the basement and digging out my LT-48.

When you saw the "ball polishing machine" at the local alley, didn't you chuckle a bit?
The Brunswick [ Johnny Petraglia ] LT 48 was a ball that could cut through the oil and some bowlers were reluctant to jump to urethane Right away!!!

Congrats to Joey Berardi, and great bowling by Guppy Troup. Class Bowlers👍👍

Looking for the 1980 Showboat Invitational, anyone have it posted? I see '81...
It’s my favorite Brunswick masking units-the ultimate in bowling lane elegance.
Bowling tech nerding.

I love the opening theme music ESPN used here....anyone know what artist/song that is?
Artist: The Crusaders Song: Sweet n' Sour
I had that for lunch
Earl Anthony and Mark Roth are my favorite bowlers. We as kids would try to mimic their styles at the bowling alley.
I bowled with earl Anthony at thruway lanes, it was a dream come true.

Two New York Guys Bowling . Mark Roth vs. Joey Berardi
Mark Roth could hook a polyester ball with one hand as much as today's bowlers can hook a resin ball with two hands.
And he’s got the major championships to prove it!!!!!

Joey Berardi puts a tremendous amount of roll on the ball.
Rolling the ball is absolutely critical in bowling.
I rolled 5.690 perfect 300 games in my career. Rolled everyone of them. 😮 💪 🤨
The diabeetus commercial...lol.
I once converted the dreaded 27-95 split.
