  • in this episode of junk bucket garage, we take this 1951 Studebaker thats been sitting for over 30 years and has a stuck engine. let’s see if we can get it running. I’m going to try to do this without buying new parts and using as little money as possible.

It is fun watching people that are new to Studebakers. The cars are designed different from the other makes for sure. I own a 1951 Commander (V8) two door sedan, that car is the much more desirable coupe.

Working on many flat heads I have learned some things and that is it's never the pistons that are stuck it's always the valves that lock it up from sitting glad you got it broken lose. those flatheads are hard to kill so I'm sure you will get it going

i believe i got lucky on this one and all the valves were free

Those cars usually have a electric overdrive that you engage on the dash as long as all the parts are there for the OD anyway I love the Bullet nose starlight coupe I got to work on a couple of them a few years ago got them going after sitting for years.

You can use 12v battery on 6v starter to turn engine over just don't turn light on when you have 6v light

If u decide an engine change, an want a nice cruiser, just double the hp with a modern V6 engine.

I sure hope you practice the column shifter before you try racing. That or you review your video on the shift pattern. Didn't know Studebakers had 2 reverse gears on the pattern. 😂 😂 😂

3 in the tree shifts like a Ford. Does it have an unsynchronized first :)? Probably. Will it flatten anything else on the road. Mostly. My Dad had a Hawk. A drunk ran across the lawn and totaled his car on the Hawk's rear bumper. Hardly a scratch on the Hawk. Seriously!

dang. i hate hearing that. poor car. 🥲 it’s definitely fun to drive. thanks for watching

@@junkbucketgarage like I say my Dad's Hawk was fine. It was a 4 speed. Bucket seats. 289 V8 Packard engine. Lots of the consumable parts of the car like the bendix brakes were still available long after the company failed. Studebaker was a much more inventive company than Chrysler. Lots of valuable patents.
