- The 2004 My Morning Jacket show at Bonnaroo is legendary as the breakthrough show for the guys from Louisville, but also because it perfectly describes what Bonnaroo is all about - heat, rain, and a band giving everything it has to an adoring audience that is also weathering the elements.
MMJ frontman Jim James joined Brad, Barry and Lord Taco on The What Podcast to talk about that iconic show and the live double album that’s due out next month in celebration of the set’s 20th anniversary. James also discusses the relationship that My Morning Jacket has with the festival, how important it has been to the band’s career arc, and their return to The Farm this year as part of their upcoming tour.

The What Podcast is a weekly show by two veterans of the entertainment media universe with a passion for live music and music festivals. They came together over a love of Bonnaroo and found out pretty quickly that they are not alone. In fact, since launching in 2018, they found kindred spirits all over the world who also love the vibe found only at music festivals. Each week they share their own stories and opinions, but they also dig deeper and talk to the musicians and industry insiders who make the magic happen.

I seen them this year bonaroo 23 and they put on a hell of a show... They went 30m over a 2hr set AND did a 3 song encore... Tremendous and anybody who says they don't like this band need to at least watch them live... I guarantee they will be a fan afterwards
MMJ = best living band in the universe
MMJ > STS9 such a classic Bonnaroo night ahead of us, see you there ✌️
Their set annihilated me
It exceeded expectation. Two Roo legends back to back.
'04 my one and only Bonnaroo and can fondly remember almost every single minute of it. It was the beginning of our epic 8 week road trip (my wife and 2 young daughters 9 &13) and had no idea of what we were in for. I'm 59 now and have the great luck of bartending MMJ's show tomorrow evening in Saint Augustine Florida and can't wait to see all you beautiful people at a special venue 🤙🏾
Man I’d love to see some film of that
Can't wait for this performance. Im gonna be up front crying tears of joy!
Jim James is a musical Jesus...I mean genius. Love his openness.
This is Barry’s shining moment! ❤🥹
so stoked, great interview. He brought some amazing insight into the fest and shows
I saw MMJ in '04 at Bonnaroo and '07 at Lollapalooza. They were like 2 different bands, but both shows were awesome. I've also seen them in a small bar in Louisville in like '01 and again in '21 at Railbird.
Great interview! Cant wait for their set
Love that man talking deep about mental health is role modelling great positive behaviour
Nice interview. Love how honest Jim was with his feelings and thoughts❤
I remember it being SO damn hot . While waiting for MMJ to take the stage the Sun went behind a cloud tiny cloud and the crowd erupted in a cheer LOL . After the storm , there was an orange hue that lingered Bonnaroo . It was a special moment in musical history .
Scary!? 😂 omg. The early years were so amazing! I will say as I have gotten older I certainly appreciate all the upgrades.
What a sweet dude! 🥹💓
Also.. MMJ FUCKING RULES!!! ❤
2016 was the only year that was really crazy with the rain for me. We woke up Monday morning in our tent to absolute TORRENTIAL downpour… we woke up to thunder & lightning, downpours, puddles etc and just wanted to get TF outta there! Even when we did we had to stop on the highway due to the rain because we couldn’t see! Bad! 😂
I swear Jim James has reverb built into his voice. Is he sitting in an auditorium?
The Waterfall 🌲
Watch yo tone when you talking to mr Jim James I’m sayin he up with the shits ya mean he’s basically jerry Garcia
Can Jim talk?
I'd say Bonaroo is as close too Woodstock as it gets and that's the truth... Sadly tho EDM is taking over
Taco didn’t say a word lmao it was annoying how you didn’t let him fully speak and cut him off frequently. Other than that it was cool to hear James insight.
