This performance shuts down all of the ignorant, non-creatives who swore this woman wasn't a powerhouse vocalist. She gave a resonant, controlled, Broadway-esque, Tony-award winning vocal performance.
This performance shows her range. Her voice was powerful. She was nervous but i would be infront of the world of hollywood. We miss you Aaliyah. Each and every day.
That head and chest voice! That resonance and silky smooth tone! I may get ripped for saying this but this voice had potential with time to follow in the steps of Whitney Houston. Insane to say but damn I had no idea she could sing like this. She was a nervous teenager here. Imagine her with this technique at 24 or 25. I'm sure she would've been another world level vocal talent.
My mom saw this live and said she was fantastic and many reviewers thought she performed great too but many people didn't know who she was, and people that knew her was shocked because she wore a dress and looked more matured lol. Aaliyah was gagging the gworls back then😂 This performance put her in a different light. Only thing was Celine performed and ate as well with her hit Heart Must Go On so the media was focused on that. (Titanic was huge that year!) The Oscars were a big deal back then, I'm talking 40+ million viewers. After this performance, she became unstoppable. It was movie after movie, hit after hit. You could no longer ignore her talent. There was something so captivating and charming about her. I gotta admit Barry Hankerson did his big one! He used to have her BOOKED ok?! The Oscars as your first major TV award show performance? And your song is nominated? GAG!!!!!!
Yet, daily on social media people are still always saying she couldn't sing. One thing she never did was lip sync, even in her most actively moving performances.
@Universal035 I think people have been trying to make them rivals, but the way Aaliyah was, she always felt there is room for everyone and she preferred to stay away from drama.
@@Universal035Noooo. Aaliyah was a fun, futuristic edgy girl with a distinct sound. I enjoy Ciara's music too, but she is not on Aaliyah's level even in death. Anyone can sing Ciara's songs, it's not really innovative and a lot of her earlier work seemed to be inspired by Aaliyah. No comparison!
1997 was a very good year for animated studios in which I got to enjoy Disney's Hercules and Fox Animation Studio's Anastasia. Both have such wonderful musical soundtrack! Aaliyah here, such lush and RnB magic to the track, Journey to the Past. I miss her. She may have been popular for her dance hip hop tracks but this girl can also do ballads well. This song, Turn the Page and The One I Gave My Heart To are my favorite ballads just beautifully sung by her. She really gives us variety in her voices here.
What a performance! Given the fact she was the youngest singer to perform for the Academy Awards at the time plus that 1998 was one of the most watched also because of Titanic makes it even more impressive. She did an outstanding performance, especially at the end. And her dress was very beautiful and elegant ❤️ Thanks for putting this special moment of her career in HD. You‘re really the best Aaliyah channel! 👍🏼
I wish I could turn the time back in the 90s. My beloved grandmother would be alive, how I miss her ,I fell into deep melancholy, and no one can heal me from her passing!!!
Omg thank you for this!!! I always watch the old quality version of this video but never saw the full video and this quality and sound is the best I've seen. This is such a gift
I just realized, how awful. She was 19 at this time, the same age as the Romanov daughters when they were brutally murdered by the Bolsheviks. And then what happened to her. The world truly is an awful place. RIP all of you beautiful ladies.
@@vincentcerasoli5969i get your point , somehow a coincidence the youngest was 17 , oldest 20+ very relatable to journey to the past . All little girls recently turned ladies unalived in horrific way
Aaliyah had accomplished so much, including having 3 platinum albums, that it is hard to believe she was only 22 when she died.
This performance shuts down all of the ignorant, non-creatives who swore this woman wasn't a powerhouse vocalist. She gave a resonant, controlled, Broadway-esque, Tony-award winning vocal performance.
At 3:24, she sounds almost exactly like a Young Whitney.
the way her voice grows as the song continues, Aaliyah was a true talent. 🙌🏽

2:21 shook.. the resonance and clarity in her belts are so smooth.. one of a kindd
Aaliyah gave me the chills 🥹
The best quality I've seen of this performance!
2:17, when she goes into her chest voice gives me chills
Love how she gradually get more powerful as the song goes on, true songstress Rip baby girl
You can tell she was influenced by Whitney. Her vibrato sounds like a lighter version of Whitney’s especially when she hit that “At last” note
Absolutely! She did a lot of inflections that were reminiscent of Whitney 🥹

Dang I wish I can meet your mom about Aaliyah

Do you think if she was here would Aaliyah & Ciara have been rivals competing in this industry?
@Universal035 I think people have been trying to make them rivals, but the way Aaliyah was, she always felt there is room for everyone and she preferred to stay away from drama.

@@unbothered7090Aaliyah is a much better singer. They cannot be compared vocally. Now dancing Ciara gets a slighter edge but she isn't unique
Prettiest girl who ever lived.
She sounds beautiful here. So strong.
