    It has been brought to my attention how I forgot to mention that Aaliyah's Oscar Performance led to her getting offers to perform on Broadway shows like Aida.

    I'm glad you included that clip of her in the _In Memoriam_ montage from the 2002 ceremony. Her inclusion caused an outrage from singer Peggy Lee's family and reps because they felt Aaliyah's film career was not (yet) distinguished to be included over Lee, who was "snubbed". Her family got dragged on all the popular forums (that era's social media) for singling Aaliyah out.

They weren't going to show it again and RUclips didn't exist. It wasn't until the video for "Are You That Somebody?" dropping later that same year that I actually saw her in a dress. And she knew what she was doing because it was right at the very end of the video. Lol. • @bajeboi
    @bajeboi 4 года назад +8

    If you hear the HD audio of this performance (its here on RUclips ) it really showed what Aaliyah could do. I always maintained that when it came to ballads Aaliyah could hang with her peers Brandy and Monica. It's also bittersweet because you can imagine her singing I Refuse or I Care 4 U backed by an orchestra. This and her Christmas in Washington performances really show her voice was more suited to that type of material. An unpopular opinion here but most of Timbaland's beats weren't made for live performances coupled with her bad backup singers got Aaliyah the cant sing live moniker.

    • @TonyTurner
      @TonyTurner  4 года назад +4

      I agree!!!! I've always said how hard it was for the songs Timb produced to be translated to a smooth live performance coupled with Aaliyah's stage fright. Aaliyah could hang with the best of them, she just needed more rehearsals and practice.

    • @bajeboi
      @bajeboi 4 года назад +6

      The "Never Coming Back" performance from 97 is probably my favorite live vocal from her. Her voice was full and strong there. She literally SNAPPED! That entire concert was very strong vocally. Her nerves made her inconsistent but Aaliyah could deliver!

    • @bajeboi
      @bajeboi 4 года назад +3

      @@anjelheaven True, that was a great vocal I am inclined to go with the performance of The One I Gave My heart to live at the Big Help as her best vocal. However, I agree her whole set at that concert was on point hopefully the videos from that show will see the light of day eventually.

You are a perceptive guy, Aaliyah said in her own words that she is an old soul, she’s a Capricorn and when you see her in interviews she didn’t speak like a teenager she carried herself very well. I don’t condone older men preying on young girls but at the same time I don’t think Aaliyah was dumb, she was smart enough to make her own decisions. I don’t think her decisions were always good ones. I don’t particularly think Dame Dash was a good idea, but here we are.

      I don't know why you keep saying this. I remember Aaliyah when she was alive, hearing her on the radio, watching her on TV and my mother taking me to go buy her 3rd album. I know a lot about her. I didn't just discover her last year. I been a fan since 98. Lol

      @@bajeboi It really doesn't. None of us really know about Aaliyah besides her friends and family. All fans have access to how Aaliyah's career unfolded young or old. Lol

      @@TonyTurner I think you're doing a great job! I was a tween when Aaliyah debuted and 18 when she lost her life and some of the stuff you've covered I'd forgotten about. Keep it up, I love the fact that you actually research.

    Aaliyah could have been a good vocalist

      @@TonyTurner Not really cause there's performances I watch of her where her voice was cracking like there's one she performed Try Again on the Rosie O Donnell show and wasn't really there in vocals I'm not knocking her off I love Aaliyah her voice is so soothing like Janet Jackson's but this might be her only great performance where she sounds good in tone more probably cause she's not dancing.

      Ok. That's fair. So many of Aaliyah's live performances could have been better if she got over her nerves and her band had better arrangements.
