I'm so proud of you my guy, not everyone can enjoy Meshuggah on their first go around. That's dope.
My sentiments exactly. Particularly when he started out hardmode with Clockworks.
I sure as fuck didn't lol I had to listen to Bleed like 4 times because everytime something new made me give it another try
The only problem I had was the growly vocals. Once i warmed up to those I was all-in
@@jommywop Everyone who has a problem with Extreme Metal all comes down to the vocals.
I totally get it, but my only question is; what kind of clean vocals would make this music more agreeable to people who don't appreciate distorted vocals?
It's the biggest challenge I've encountered when introducing this style of Music. Clean vocals don't always fit with some of these sounds, so it's like, how do I make this more acceptable?
The answer isn't clear.
@@atthecore4560 I don't think clean vocals would work for most of the music. It just took me awhile to warm up to the growls. I wouldn't change anything. Not everyone is going to be into it. That's ok. I'm not into jazz. I don't wish jazz would change just so I can enjoy it. It wouldn't be jazz anymore.
As for what kind of clean vocals might work if you had to try... maybe Maynard from Tool?
Clockworks is more like an event, than a song. Amazing that 4 musicians can create all that sound.
i agree. i see a lot of their songs as feats of engineering in the same way i would marvel at say an impressive viaduct or suspension bridge.
Going straight into Meshuggah is like playing Dark Souls with no video game experience. And you slayed that shit. This is awesome.
SUCH A GREAT REFERENCE!
Dark Souls is completely the video game interpretation of Meshuggah. You have to be prepared for the insanity.
Lmao I love this reference
im brand new to metal and i found meshuggah (literally this morning) and just instantly was hooked on the sound. heaviest music ive ever sat and enjoyed.
You should check out the band Fallujah
If you like complexity in metal, try some Obscura. 👍🤘🎶
The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, Car Bomb, Gojira, Vildhjarta, Jinjer (female vocalist), Animals As Leaders (no vocals), Humanity's Last Breath, Tool
Check out Tesseract- heavy as fuck production wise, but very clean and ethereal
With amazing vocals
Meshuggah is the quantum physics of metal
so what is dillinger escape plan then?
@@darioactive-man3287 ”The quantum physics student with severe ADHD” was the first thing that entered my mind. Maybe? Haha.
@@Dinosaurs_with_laser_guns and speed addiction :D
@@darioactive-man3287 haha nailed it
Every time I blast Meshuggah everyone in the car goes quiet and still. No one likes it and it's my favorite band, so I ride alone, win win.
The exquisite machinery of torture is one of my fav songs.
Fitting name for the car rides
I could only wish any of my friends enjoyed this awesome band...
You're like me then. We like to make people feel awkward XD
Yeah I had 3 of my friends in the car going to Montreal and we were in a terrible snow storm the whole way up, took us an extra hour to get there. Went through a bunch of bands like Between The Buried And Me and Protest The Hero, but when I put on "Obzen" everybody shut up. I think people have a hard time thinking when there's complicated music going on, like you can see them stutter when their speech doesn't line up with the music.
Tl:dr get gud
The drums on Bleed $$$$
Fire
Great reaction just wish he did the album version after all the Mesh chaos! The solo is spacey sick (;
Either way he gets Haake an amazing percussionist!!!
No dislikes so far that's awesome! I'm subbed!!!
The drums on bleed < the drums on clockworks...
@@matthewgodding777 Clockworks is just hands down their best song.
Well, i gotta say you took that like a pro metalhead.
It takes a special kind of mind to even like this metal, it´s complex as hell but heavy as led.
Welcome to the metalhead club dude!! ;)
(This band makes me proud to be a swede.)
Is there something in the water that gives swedes metal super powers? Meshuggah, Amon Amrath, Opeth....
@@jommywop Nah, we´re just perfectionists when it comes to all things in life. If you gotta be metal as hell, then you gotta do it right. Technical is kind of our thing when it comes to metal. Check out Soilwork too....some nice headbanging there. ;)
You're the only one I've seen react to Meshuggah properly, in my opinion.
You can't "get" them by just listening to one song. You listened to THREE back to back. Major props.
Fucking SOLID video man
Congrats broheem......you've officially jumped in the deep end :) welcome to the dark side
hahaha true that...
Bleed is a song about a brain aneurysm and what it feels like going through it.
Every time I've listened to Bleed my entire body is physically exhausted
@@sandercohen3309 same wtf
That's so awesome that you were able to jam with these guys your first time hearing them! You're a rare breed, my friend. Much respect!
brave man stepping into the Mesh. it's the soundtrack to a brutal, psychopathic beating. father's of a musical movement called Djent, total polyrhythmic insanity! even though it's chaotic there's a hynotic quality to it
Loved your reactions to the songs. And you’re correct in noticing Thomas Haake’s incredible drumming skill. He’s quite the legend. As a side note, he didn’t even start out playing drums in the band. I believe he took it up early on after he joined.
nah, im pretty sure he played in a band with marten hagstrom in high school, which is where they got hagstrom from (because he was tomas's friend)
@@jackcafarella1062 it's possible he plays more than one instrument my guy
@@zoeissleepy708 he was the drummer, he talks about getting his first kit and lessons at age 6 or so in interviews
@@zoeissleepy708well he definitely doesn’t play guitar, he says in the making of koloss video that he can’t play guitar
Hell yeah man, catch those hi-hats!! The nature of the drums and rhythm section of this style of metal is GROOVY and once you catch the groove you can't let it go. Great reaction man, this band is a treat to metalheads and non-metalheads alike.
Prog (Progressive) rock/metal is all about the musical journey and letting the instruments speak. Great to see you really feeling it this ain’t no intermediate level band even many metalheads struggle with this stuff. 👍
This song is one of the most difficult to get down for anyone. The pattern seems simple, but not only is it SUPER fast, but it constantly changes up in subtle ways.
Demiurge is probably going to be my favorite forever. It’s them concussive blasts on that snare syncopated with the riff that gets me head banging every time.
Seen them live twice. Once opening up for Ministry and the second was them headlining. Headline show, I cracked three ribs and fractured my leg in the pit. Didn't realize it till the next morning. I remember hitting the bathroom and dudes lined up to clean blood off their faces. Shit was madness.
Ahhhh yes..... polyrhythms....once you're hooked there's no turning back.
It has that beautiful, trance-like, atmospheric, experimental vibe that I look for in metal. Great stuff man.
That drummer is a fucking beast
Hell yea dude... Meshuggah is not for everyone but its amazing and one of a kind 🤘🤘🤘 keep up the great work with ur reactions
Your comments on metal being an experience are exactly right: the vocals are just one of several instruments at work, and form part of the overall tapestry of sound.
If you want to know the lyrics, awesome, grab them and read along. If not, that's fine, too.
Septicflesh-portrait of a headless man
Septicflesh-vampires from Nazareth
Septicflesh-anubis
Not martyr? Still think thats a far better introduction than portrait.
Shoulda gone for Tomas Hakke's drum playthroughs, you'll really appreciate his raw unbridled skill when you see those.
Also, you're both right and wrong about the lyrics. Sure, sometimes the lyrics themselves aren't the actual focus (like meshuggah) but with a lot of bands, if you actually bother to decipher them, they're very well written. There is also plenty of metal where the lyrics take the forefront and the music, no matter the technicality and musicality (like tool) provides a backdrop.
And Tomas Haake writes the lyrics as well. 👍🏽
'and what type of diet you on' haha they have been mining for this stuff for a good few years now, the only way to get to this level, and with such an uncompromising sound. the Tomas Haake drum playthrough videos are amazing of Bleed and Clockworks, well worth a watch.
One thing you gotta understand about the rhythms with Meshuggah is that they are STAGGERINGLY advanced. You'll notice that each song has a sort of odd "feel" to it, almost random, but it still makes sense. And depending on where you put your attention you get something different.
That's from the fact that there's anywhere from 2 to like 5 different rhythmic paces intertwined and overlapped in each song, and it gives this feeling of you just BARELY being able to call it "orderly".
It's some next level shit in that regard. Watching videos of the drummer playing really highlights just how bizarre it all is. You can visually watch him do things that seem like they don't make sense rhythmically, but sure enough it all checks out in that your reaction to it isn't the same as watching two people clap out of sync with a song.
Thats exactly the reason I listen to metal is because I think to myself like how the fuck did they even think of writing that.
Any Gojira coming? Like another said, congrats on enjoying them first go. Not many do at all. Great channel man been watching others just subscribed
Ohhhh shit! You in for a trip lol!
\m/_ 😆 _\m/
You get it exactly. The words are to be discovered. The moment is what matters. Feeling it all wash over you, like when I played HS football. Yeah, there was a game plan, but what mattered to me was the rush of the snap, getting off the line and that first hit.
Demiurge is just so fucking heavy!
this band all about the rhythmn interplay between guitar and drums
It really shows that you Love music!
Wow, my 3 favorite songs in 1 video. Pretty sweet!
Nice video man, i really appreciate the fact that you listened to those 3 songs !! Thank you so much !!!
Any given day is a great metal band worth checking out.
Yeah. These guys are the business!
Since you asked how one comes up with this, Bleed is about someone experiencing a brain aneurysm and bleeding out in his head, the woman with the red thread is a representation of one of the three fates in ancient Greek mythology, weaving the thread of one's life until it's cut.
Kudos to you for taking on this band. Meshuggah is the quantum physics of Metal 🤘
Hell yes bro props to you for checking out the most insane metal band in the universe. Glad you can appreciate it. Meshuggah is a laser beam that goes right through anything in its path. It's just unbelievable how good they are. Also... you did 3 songs in a row haha, even if Bleed was the video edit... you met the challenge and came out the other side better for it. Meshuggah is a rabbit hole... once you're in, you just are not the same. Quantum physics of music.
Oh we most certainly enjoy the lyrics. Believe it or not the old school guys like myself can understand a bunch of this stuff without reading the lyrics. It’s just an ear thing we trained ourselves with since the late 80s and 90s
You've got the gene brother :) Technical metal is about skill and composition, getting lost in one of the many strings of melody, timing and rhythm. Kudos for entering this strange world of music!
13 Ghosts, my friend! Great movie.
"see the veins coming out of his neck?" this is a man giving a shit
This is for when you are in a great workout and you hit the wall.
Meshuggah are about the rhythmic work. Like a machine that just won't stop. My neck was more jacked up after a Meshuggah gig than any other I've been to, it's like this but for about an hour and a half with only a few minutes interlude.
It's funny though. They are so heavy yet at the same time hypnotic and almost trance inducing.
You know L was feeling that flow! Real headbanging on those breakdowns
🤘🤘🤘
Jeez dude youre a hero for jumping straight into Meshuggah. I respect it.
Ive listened to them for over a decade now and i still get caught off by their stuff. Glad to see people get exposed to it and have a good time. Once you get past the initial shock you start to pick apart and discover things you never noticed during the first play.
If youre looking for a way to describe them i always feel like their music is an extremely dangerous beastlike creature lurking in the darkness. It sounds so vicious and inhuman.
Love that you checked out Meshuggah They are one of my favourite bands along side Lamb Of God, so that is my request to you my man, check out Lamb Of God if you get the chance!
Respect from The UK!
Yesssssss. Listen to "Walk with me in Hell"!!!!
I remember 13 ghosts. It was cheesy but super sick. Will re-watch any day
Its amazing you get it the first time, even an avid metal fan like me could not get it the first time.
You need some Tool bro, I suggest "46 & 2" and "Eulogy" as a starting point and maybe "Schism" , they were influenced very heavily by meshuggah, but are much more melodic, think Meshuggah meets Pink Floyd they have similar vibe in videos as well though , so you may wanna check lyric videos if you wanna get some sleep.
Don't think they were influenced by Meshuggah, moreso King Crimson and Pink Floyd
@@ruofhatem Nah they were heavily influenced by Meshuggah, its one of the reasons they went into polyrhythmns so much Floyd and KC and even ZEp too regards classic (and im sure lots of other stuff) but defo big into Meshuggah (who have been going for ages)
Tool are the Rock version of Meshuggah.
It's a downgrade to us lovers of Extreme Metal.
@@atthecore4560 Tool are Tool bud. There may be influences but Tool do their own thing. I'm not going argue about who's better. Tool are definitely not "the rock version of
Meshuggah" though. That's a pile of crap.
@@jommywop Energy is energy.
It's not about better or worse. It's about intention and energy.
Meshuggah and Tool seek to create our shared interaction and interpretation with the energy of the depths of inner workings. They both touch and draw from the same pool of knowledge and energy.
Why would you doubt that?
Djent metal really gets you amped and hits all the right spots.
My guy. You fam after this. Subscribed with the bell
Love your reactions.Really cool that you played 3 different videos by them to get a good feel for what they can do.Meshuggah are a big deal in my world.Nobody like them.Thanx for the vid.
Hey man you got it right! Metal is like a wave gotta learn when to catch it
The lyrics are actually pretty under-rated when it comes to Meshuggah. While often quite surface level in terms of what is being depicted, the verbiage is so out there and once you get into it, it really contributes to the overall feeling of the tracks. Oppressive and morbidly fascinating.
You should try some of their more groove oriented tracks like Beneath or Straws Pulled at Random. Across their discography there are quite a plethora of different styles they have gone through.
The drum cam video for clockworks is a must.
Bleed, Demiurge, and clockworks - yes, yes, and yes 😂😂🤘🤘
I love you reaction to the chain around the neck so much. "Ey, maybe I don't need to be here" Like for real, that's a nope from me dog.
The music video for Bleed had several visual elements which may need some explaining. Firstly, the song is about having an aneurysm. The video is an imagination of the transformation from life to death. The lady with the red twine that you were curious about is one of the three 'Fates' from mythology.. don't remember her name.. but she is the one that measures the thread of ones life.. and when she reaches the point where she cuts the thread.. you die. I am paraphrasing there as it has been sooo many years since I was in school learning this kinda stuff. I also take no credit in deciphering this information from the video, as it is information I have garnered from other reaction comment section for this song. Just relaying the information for ya to better understand what is going on in the video.
Peace
Tomas Haake, the drummer for Messhugah, actually had to "re-learn" how to play drums because of Bleed. If you're interested in checking it out there's a video out there of him playing Bleed live, and it's absolutely incredible seeing him do his thing
One of us. One of us
I am from Umeå lol!! I pretty much grew up on the same street as where they recorded there first albums ;)
yo, I love how when bleed came on, your head was trying to figure what beat to bang to. You stopped and commented right after your head gave up on finding what beat to bang to. Your head kept shaking and banging to more than the just the cymbals. Just tells me you have a true ear for music. Most people give up and just head bang to the cymbals. Rock on bro
This is what i'm waited for my guy. This guys are from sweden. They are the former of "Djent"! 👌Great reaction! 💪
I'm just seeing this, I had no idea you did a reaction to one of my favorite bands🤘🤘... Listen to Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion, a fav of mine.
I bang my head against the wall when I listen to this
A good groove is a good groove no matter the genre.
Good luck head banging to those time signatures :D
Always hilarious watching someone trying to headbang to meshuggah for their first time
9:40 truer words were never spoken, my guy
deep into the abyss of metal...
Funny you say that about working out. I listen to this (sort of song) when i do deadlifts and squats. lol
Now do GOJIRA run please!
Legends
Wow, the Bleed musing video is a nightmare in its own category...
I showed that to my lizard, and it became a dragon.
Meshuggah, no other band like them
Alright now Obzen and Combustion!!!
Man, dude, you just hit like the 95% percentile of how intense heavy music can get. I can only think of a few subgenres that would be even more intense but I don't know if you'd want me to recommend them!
It would be hilarious to see his reaction to some grindcore.
It would be even more badass if you listened to Catch 33 in full (a 1 song album split into 13 parts). You could become a legend overnight by being the first to react to it
Animals As Leaders. CAFO 🙏🔥🔥🔥
Similar crazy skills.
Awesome video, even said the name correctly. Meshuggah's name is taken from the Hebrew and Yiddish word for "crazy".
U have realy good reactions 🤘
Swedish metal at its finest. 🤘🤘
Brah you came so close to hearing a true banger band gojira
I still think when it comes to headbanging Meshuggah beats Gojira, overall I still enjoy both equally.
HAAKE IS THE JOHN BONHAM OF METAL!! Although John drummed metal especially in my favorite Led Zep track Achillies Last Stand (;
Fucking hell dude, right in at the deep end here ahaha.
Dude, Im actually amazed You handled it so well. Clockworks is imho their magnum opus, when it comes to a single track, in every single aspect (in Your video 8:28 is probably my favorite moment of their whole discography, this theatrical power when these chords ring between really dense picking and Jens shouting COMPLEEEETE DISINTEGRATION sends shivers down my spine every time). Also, when You look at the original cover art of ObZen (album containing Bleed), this creepy-ass pale dude from the video holds his 3 bloody hands in a way they form 6 6 6, so its just an impersonation of evil - funfact for You :D Anyway, glad You enjoyed it, please go see them live (life altering experience, trust me) and earned a sub, solid shit on Your channel!
Man you nailed it. I love Meshuggah, but metal vocals are another instrument - its diving into the emotion & pulse of the sound and deriving your own meaning.
Knew you were eventually gonna mention the drummer.👍🏾
Tomas Haake is a beast!
When people say show me Heavy, I show them Meshuggah!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
funny you mentioned the "Saw" movies. One of their songs, "Shed" I believe, was in one of the movies in the ending credits I think.
Saw 3 I think
